Cole K’s Best PGA Bets Today: PGA Betting Picks & Predictions for the Players Championship

Although it may not be considered a major, the Players Championship is the closest thing to golf’s fifth major. With a first-place prize of $3.6 million, the field is playing for massive paydays in what is expected to be a great weekend of golf. Live from TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., the field takes the course early Thursday morning. The weekend weather is something to keep an eye on, as the par-72, 7,256-yard course may see high winds and rain throughout the weekend. Placing golf wagers for a full weekend tournament can be done in multiple ways. With that being said, let’s focus on a tournament matchup, a top-20 finish and a few outright winners to make the weekend of golf that much more fun to watch.

Players Championship Tournament Matchup

To begin, the tournament matchup market is one of the best bets in all of golf. It gives bettors an opportunity to get behind a golfer for any given weekend, with the only focus on beating one other golfer in the field. At TPC Sawgrass a good iron player who is strong around the greens is a good bet, and the best 72-hole play of the weekend is Max Homa over Marc Leishman (-110) at DraftKings. Homa has been hot to start the calendar year with a well-rounded, consistent game and is getting strong results because of it. In strong fields this year Homa has finished top 17 in four of his past five tournaments, and he has gained strokes on approach in four straight. Although he missed the cut last year in this same tournament, he has become a more consistent ball striker since. Not only should he make the cut, but he should also be in contention on Sunday and will ultimately beat Leishman.

Players Championship Top 20 Bet

Top-20 bets are a great way to get involved in the golf gambling market. These bets allow bettors to play golfers to have a solid weekend without the sweat of an outright on Sunday afternoon. When making these wagers, the focus is on consistency and value, as the goal is to find the golfer with the best chance of having a good weekend and putting himself in contention on Sunday. This weekend a guy to focus in on is Matthew Fitzpatrick, who is currently +175 to finish top 20, also on DraftKings. Fitzpatrick has been solid all around as of late and spectacular putting, ranking second in the field on Bermuda greens. In three tournaments this year he has finishes of sixth, 10th and ninth, showing consistency and the ability to play in all conditions. Fitzpatrick is playing some of his best golf as of late, and while there is expected to be poor weather conditions over the weekend, be confident in Fitzpatrick and his ability to overcome the challenges the course will present.

Players Championship Outright Bet

Although the tournament matchups and top-20 bets are fun, they do not offer that huge payday golf bettors are always searching for. Tournament outright allow for cutting the usual unit size and sprinkle it around on a few guys. This weekend a few valuable outright bets to take are Collin Morikawa (+1600) and Will Zalatoris (+4000), both at DraftKings. Taking these two as outright winners gets a guy who is expected to be in contention on Sunday and also a long shot who will return a huge payday in Zalatoris. When the bright lights come on, Morikawa shows up, plain and simple, and there is a chance oddsmakers are still underrating Morikawa at 16-1. Morikawa has five PGA tour at 25 years old, including two majors, playing with consistency when it matters. He ranks 15th in driving accuracy combined with a sixth-place ranking in strokes gained on approach, so Morikawa will be in prime position to win if he can get his putter into form.

As for Zalatoris, 40-1 odds essentially create a flier that is worth taking. TPC Sawgrass rewards elite iron players, and in his only tournament at this course, Zalatoris outplayed the field on the par 5’s, with score of 4.36. That ranked first and will go a long way in helping him get into contention this weekend. He has gained strokes on approach in every tournament this year and will look to take his career to the next level by adding a Players Championship win.
