2022 Wyndham Championship First Round Leader Picks

This week is the last regular season stop for the PGA Tour, and there should be some fireworks. The Wyndham Championship produces low scoring each season, with five of the last six champions reaching 21 under par or better. The shorter, par-70 course has pure Bermuda greens, which tend to roll true and can be very receptive, especially in the morning before they are dried out. That’s an important note for first-round leader bets, as each of the past six seasons has seen at least one of the first-round leaders come from the a.m. group — and four of the past six seasons has had an morning-exclusive first-round leader. The Wyndham is all about accuracy, as the course plays short for PGA Tour standards. Short iron proximity, course experience and positive Bermuda putting splits can all be indicators this week.

2022 Wyndham Championship First Round Leader Bets

For 2022, the venue isn’t supposed to see much wind on Thursday, but there has been some evening rain of late. The a.m. trend of first-round leaders should continue in 2022, with more receptive greens for the early starters. Using OddsShopper golf betting tools below, we’ll identify some of the best values on the board for the first-round leader market at the 2022 Wyndham Championship this week.

Best First Round Leader Betting Picks

Justin Rose First Round Leader +5500 | BetMGM

Among the morning tee times on Thursday, there are lots of intriguing names in the 40-1 to 70-1 range, but Justin Rose is the best of the group. Rose is coming in well rested, and that can often do wonders for a player of his age and experience. Rose entered the Canadian Open in early June off a missed cut (and extra week off) and promptly finished fourth, shooting 60 in the final round while gaining 7.2 strokes ball striking and over 8.0 strokes putting. His A-game is still there, and later in his career these more technical tracks have become better sites for him. Rose finished 10th at this event in 2021, with rounds of 66 and 65 to open, and the fact he’s made the trek to compete this week while being inside the top 100 in the FedEx standings is a good sign he likes the venue. With him going out in the fifth-earliest group this week, he’s an easy target at 50-1 or better.

Brian Harman First Round Leader +6600 | BetMGM

If looking to make a wager on BetMGM this week, then Brian Harman is a first-round leader target to consider on that sportsbook. He has better odds than Rose, and new BetMGM users get a risk-free bet up to $1,000!

Harman doesn’t just have great odds, but his form has been on the uptick too. Top-10 finishes in two of his last three starts are great indicators, and he’s always had the ability to go super low when his confidence is high — he still owns the course record at PGA National (61), another par-70 venue with Bermuda greens. Like Rose, Harman is out in the first five groups on Thursday, and he’s also coming in well rested after taking the last couple of events off. Harman should be in good spirits after a final-round 66 at the Open, and Sedgefield has drawn solid weeks from him before, with a third-place effort being his best (2014). At 66-1 Harman is ripe for a big round soon, so getting him in the proper wave here is worth the shot.

Longshot First Round Leader Betting Picks

Tyler Duncan +10000 | BetMGM

Of the longshots in play this week that are available at least at 100-1, Tyler Duncan likely makes for the best pick in the first-round leader market. Duncan has shot 66 or better now in a round in each of his last three events and produced a 65 in Round 3 last week at the Donald Ross-inspired Detroit Golf Club. The fact Duncan was able to produce such a low round on a longer venue is a good sign for his potential this week. He’s now gained over a stroke on approach in six of his last seven PGA Tour starts and popped for a 64 in Round 3 at Sedgefield in 2020. He has a great early-morning tee time and looks primed for a solid week.

Henrik Norlander First Round Leader +18000 | DraftKings

Henrik Norlander isn’t exactly the most consistent player and was even working on a seven-event missed cut streak before he broke out for a 30th-place finish at the Rocket Mortgage. He still struggled off tee in Detroit but gained over 3.5 strokes on approach for the week as well. Of note is the fact that Norlander has five top-five finishes to his credit in his career on the PGA Tour, and four of those have come on courses with Bermuda greens. His best event has been the RSM Classic on Sea Island, which is also played on a short par-70 venue with smaller Bermuda greens. Norlander may not end the event well, but a fast start after a confidence-building made cut last week wouldn’t be overly shocking.
