I can thank Rory McIlroy for this bet, as his win last week has vaulted him to the top of the board. With that in mind, we now find Rahm a few notches down and at a price that’s very appealing in the outright market. He has the game to win a U.S. Open, as he showed last year, and despite not having his A+ game lately, it is in fine shape. Rahm just won a tournament in Mexico in early May and hasn’t missed a cut the entire season. At 17-1, I’ll gladly buy on a guy who has been the favorite in this spot more often than not the past few years.

Geoff Ulrich’s Pick: Patrick Cantlay

Outright: +2400 (FanDuel Sportsbook)

The Country Club represents as good a U.S. Open venue as possible for a player like Patrick Cantlay. Multiple big weeks at Hilton Head and Pebble Beach are good indicators The Country Club will be a good test for him, as he has tended to excel at venues where smaller greens allow his all-around game to flourish. Cantlay bounced back from a horrific PGA Championship and gained 4.4 strokes putting on his way to a third-place finish at the Memorial. As he showed in the playoffs last year, when Cantlay is confident on the greens, he’s a tough man to beat. A career-best 15th at the U.S. Open last year on a longer course should also breed some confidence. The number isn’t massive, but it’s big enough to suck me back in and give Cantlay one more go at a major in 2022.

Both Niemann and countrymate Mito Pereira have had their chances in major championships this year, Niemann at the Masters and Pereira at the PGA. Niemann comes into the week in fantastic form but just hasn’t found his top form, at least since his win at the Genesis. Riviera sets up very similarly to what’s expected from The Country Club, and that subsequently gives Niemann a great shot to win this week.
