Five Things You Need to Know About Rhode Island Sports Betting, RI Online Sports Betting Apps

While many states have struggled to find footing or have taken extended time to legalize sports betting, Rhode Island sports betting was one of the earliest options in the United States. The Ocean State was quick to turn a law to legalize sports betting after PASPA was repealed in 2018. Rhode Island sports betting took its first action in November 2018. Here are the top five things you need to know about Rhode Island sports betting and RI online sports betting apps.

1) Is North Dakota Sports Betting Legal?

Rhode Island sports betting started in November 2018 in Lincoln. It’s active at two casinos and will soon be expanding into the online realm.

Gov. Gina Raimondo allocated revenue from sports betting in her budget proposal, so it’s apparent the state is counting on tax revenue. Rhode Island joined Delaware, New Jersey, West Virginia, Missssippi, Pennsylvania, and New Mexico in starting a sports betting operation at some point in 2018.

2) What Bills are Currently Before the State Legislature?

With brick-and-mortar sports betting already being legal in Rhode Island, the only other major hurdle to clear is getting online sports betting up and running.

Currently, there is a bill (S 37) awaiting a signature from Gov. Raimondo. As passed, the bill will allow the two Twin River casinos to deploy a sports betting website and mobile app for eligible bettors anywhere within Rhode Island. There were no major hiccups along the way. The Senate first considered the bill in February and passed an amended version a week later. It passed in a lopsided 64-8 vote.

3) What are the Next Steps for RI Sports Betting?

As of now, getting online sports betting off the ground is the biggest step on the docket for RI sports betting. With both Twin River casinos having the ability to get a sports betting app live where anyone within the state can legally wager on sports, it should be coming relatively soon.

4) What are the Most Popular Teams to Bet on in Rhode Island?

Being so close to the New England area, most of the attention would go to the Massachusetts teams in the major sports. So, the always popular Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots, the Boston Celtics and Boston Bruins would receive a lot of the handle from RI sports betting.

But, proximity to the northeast would likely mean a fair amount of action on other teams in the surrounding areas as well. The major New York teams in all sports and some Pennsylvania teams as well.

5) Is There Anything Else to Know About RI Sports Betting?

The Rhode Island Lottery manages the regulation and oversight of the operation. They’ve partnered with International Gaming Technology (IGT), a gaming company who already managed the state’s lottery offerings in both brick and mortar and digital capacities. They were the only bidder involved in the process.

The state also passed an addendum in 2019 to their previous sports betting laws that would see Rhode Island mobile sports betting added to their existing offerings.

Despite the addendum to state laws that would allow Rhode Island online sports betting, their options have yet to hit the public in a meaningful way. Currently, William Hill operates Sportsbook Rhode Island as the means for online betting. But users still need to go in-person to one of the Twin River casinos to verify their identity in order to play.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, there is currently no way to verify identities at those locations. One would assume that the parties involved will attempt to find another option to validate new users if casinos continue to be unable to operate. For now, you would need to have been previously verified to place mobile bets and within state borders on a Rhode Island IP address in order to partake in any mobile or online betting.

Twin River’s two casinos, Twin River Casino in Lincoln and Twin River Tiverton Casino, are the only places you can currently place a bet in Rhode Island. If you’ve previously verified your identity at one of those locations, you can also place bets via William Hill’s Sportsbook Rhode Island website and apps anywhere within the state lines.

Despite its early launch, Rhode Island sports betting took a less liberal approach to its rollout than neighboring peers like New Hampshire. As a result of that and the current COVID-19 situation, Rhode Island sports betting is a bit more difficult to accomplish than most bettors would like. But as soon as the world returns to normalcy, sports and Rhode Island sports book options will be available much like they have been as an early adopter in the legal sports betting world.

What are the Most Common Types of Bets I Can Make in Rhode Island?

Straight bet

This is the most common bet type and it is just a straight up single bet on a game. A point spread is determined by the oddsmakers with one team being favored by a certain amount of points. Let’s take a look at an example line below to give a clear indication of what a straight bet would be:

Boston Celtics -6.5 (-110), moneyline -320

at Cleveland Cavaliers +6.5 (-110), moneyline +260

O/U 206

The Celtics are favored by 6.5 points in this example. This means that if you bet the Cavaliers, you are getting 6.5 points, so if the Cavaliers win the game, or lose by fewer than seven points, you will win the bet because of your 6.5-point cushion. On the other side, when you are laying 6.5 points as the favorite, you would need the Celtics to win by seven or more to win the bet.

Final Score: Celtics 102 Cavaliers 98. Cavaliers would cover even though the Celtics won the game because the +6.5 point spread is enough to cover a four-point defeat.

Moneyline Bet

The moneyline is a bet where there is no spread; you are just picking the winner of the game. In the example above, the Cavaliers ML is +260, which means that for every $100 wagered, you win $260 if the Cavaliers win the game outright. They receive the plus side of the moneyline since they are the underdog and picking them rewards you with nice odds since they are projected to likely lose the game. On the flip side, if you bet the Celtics ML at -320, you have to bet $320 to win $100. They are the favorites so if you decide to bet the moneyline instead of the point spread, you are forced to bet additional money to win $100.

In the example above, the Celtics ML would be the winner as they won the game outright. The spread is irrelevant for a moneyline wager.

Over/Under

This is a straight bet wagering on how many total combined points will be scored in a game by both teams. For example, an NBA game may have an over/under of 210 points, which means that the oddsmakers are projecting a combined points total of 210 between the two teams. If you think the teams are going to score more than 210 points total, you bet the over, and conversely, if you think it’s going to be a defensive struggle, you can bet the under hoping that the total points scored equals 209 points or less.

Parlay

A parlay is a bet where you combine multiple bets into one bet and you get increased odds because you only win your parlay wager if all of your bets win. If you do a three-team parlay, you select three different teams from three different games and if you win all three of the bets you hit your parlay for longshot odds (6-1 so $100 to win $600). Going 0/3, 1/3, or 2/3 is all the same and you lose the parlay bet. It’s all or nothing which makes them tough to hit and is more of a home run type bet than a regular straight bet since there’s a chance for a big payoff.
