Introducing Awesemo’s PGA DFS Q-School for DraftKings + FanDuel

In just a few short days, the world’s best golfers will return to the course to compete in a PGA Tour event. If you had asked me if that was possible two months ago, I would have told you that you were out of your mind. Thankfully for us fans, that has become a reality, and DraftKings has made it all the much sweeter by offering us the biggest prize the PGA DFS game offers — $1 million to first place.

Whether you are a lifelong fan of golf, a true DFS-grinder or new to the game because it’s one of the only things in town right now (and there are a million bucks to first place), it is likely PGA DFS will have something that interests you. Unlike any other DFS Sport, PGA is played out over four days, and after two days, players from your lineup may not compete in the last two (called the cut). Our goal here at Awesemo is to try and help you put together a quality lineup(s) and give you the best chance at getting through the cut and over the cash line.

Most golfers when they come onto the pro scene have to go to “Q-School,” a series of events where they compete against others (called stages), and only the best move on from each stage. Currently, there are three stages of “Q-School:” Stage 1, Stage 2 and The Final Stage.

This article will highlight the three stages of “DFS Q-School,” a piece aimed to help you define your weekly process in making the most optimal PGA DFS lineup available, accompanied by all of the tools information and resources offered here at Awesemo.com. Each stage will have specific content geared toward helping you make the most optimal lineup or betting decision possible. It’ll cover the what, where, who and why of that which makes up PGA DFS.

Basically we’re re-jigging our content to make sure that every single week you finish off  on Thursday morning having every single element of PGA DFS covered. From recent form, to course history, to statistical fits, we’ve got you covered. Here is the full rundown.

PGA DFS Q-School Stage 1: What and Where

One thing we know for sure about the PGA Tour is when and where they are going to play, but not necessarily who. There is a whole slew of exemptions and qualifications that help contribute to the field of players, forcing it to change every week, and even during the week as players drop out. Also, not everyone likes to play every week, nor do they necessarily like every course they are playing on.

We also know what happened the previous week, who played well and who didn’t. In more detail, we have info on every golfer and how they performed from a metric called “Strokes Gained.” Most of you probably already know what this metric is, and if you don’t, you’ll likely become familiar with it rather quickly. In short, it’s a metric used to compare golfers to one another, done on a per shot/round/tournament basis, and it is broken into four distinct elements: off the tee, approach to the green, around the green and putting.

As I mentioned before, we also know when and where the PGA Tour is playing that week. Almost every week, the PGA Tour competes on a Thursday-to-Sunday schedule with the aforementioned cut happening after the conclusion of play on Friday.

Lastly, we also know what contests are being offered throughout the DFS industry for that week’s tournament.

Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s go over where you can find the information needed in the Awesemo Golf Content.

What happened last week:

  • The Opening Tee Podcast: Produced Sunday night and released Monday morning, it covers all the previous week’s action in under 30 minutes. Whether you weren’t able to catch the action, or just want some perspective on what took place, the Opening Tee Podcast has you covered.

Where the PGA Tour is player that week:

  • The First Cut Article: Released Sunday night/Monday morning, this article covers all the basics for the week, including where the PGA Tour is playing that week. Each golf course is unique to one another, and certain skills a golfer posses can shine brighter on that course. The article also covers what contests are being offered throughout the DFS industry for the week, as well as a brief introduction to the expected field for the upcoming week.

PGA DFS Q-School Stage 2: Who

The bulk of the content offered here at Awesemo is based on this stage, but that’s probably a given considering you need to roster six golfers to make a lineup.

In any given week, the odds for that tournament are typically released on Monday morning and DFS salaries follow suit, releasing them around 3:00 p.m. EST every Monday. If you like to bet on golf as well, getting odds before the mass market can give you better numbers than what the specific golfer tees off at. Those of you that like that type of information, our Monday PGA First Look show is for you. It is our first piece of content that focuses on the who. Here is the rest of the content and what the focuses are:

  • PGA The First Look Live YouTube Show: Aired at 5 p.m. EST on Monday afternoons, this show covers the first look into the PGA Tour’s odds and salaries. Getting a jump on the betting market early in the week can provide you great value come Thursday morning.
  • Fit & Form Article: Two of the most essential things when analyzing a golfer is to look at their recent form and their course fit. Some of that course fit we can derive from “course history,” and this article will break down both of these elements.
  • Fit & Form Podcast: Not into reading articles? Like hearing an explanation? Then tune into the Fit & Form podcast, a short-form podcast that gives you all the info you need to know about recent form and course fit, all in under 20 minutes.
  • Betting Preview Article: Not able to catch the live show, or just looking for some additional bets for the week? This piece is solely focused on scouring the betting market for the best values of the week. It comes out on Tuesday afternoons.
  • Strokes Gained Article: This article will be based on the new tool at Awesemo.com, coming soon, which focuses on the last 10 events competed on the PGA Tour. The tool takes all of the golfers competing in that week and shows the average strokes gained for eight different metrics (total, tee to green, ball striking, short game, off the tee, approach, around the green and putting). The article will sum up those findings and add in some commentary.
  • Three Ball Short-Form Video: This short-form video is intended to give you some ideas on some sweats for the first round. The great thing about golf is that it goes four days and both betting and DFS sites offer things for each day, ending on that day. This short-form video focuses on a few things to get the sweat started on Thursday.
  • PGA DFS Model by Jason Rouslin ($): This model has a boatload of information, all available to be downloaded and fiddled with at your leisure. It provides recent form, course history, strokes gained additional PGA Tour statistical ranks, historical DraftKings point, and much more. This is a premium feature for all Awesemo.com members.

PGA DFS Q-School Final Stage: Why

Now that we’ve covered what, where and who, all that’s left is to cover why. Each week we have no fewer than four pieces of content focused on why we at Awesemo are focusing on specific golfers for the week. A lot of the reasons can be found in the above content, but we sum it all up nicely for you in these pieces of content:

  • Above the Cut Article ($): Written by Ben Rasa for Awesemo.com subs only, Ben takes you through his big plays of the week and gives you the reasons why he’s picking them.
  • PGA Strategy Live YouTube Show: Hosted by Ben Rasa and Timothy Frank, get a unique perspective as Ben and Tim break down the whole field and give a few of their plays for the week. This is typically aired at 2:30 p.m. EST on Tuesday afternoons.
  • Against the Grain Article: This piece is focused on looking at projected ownership for the week. It goes through four different pricing sections: $10,000 and above, $8,000-9,000, $7,000 and sub-$7,000, talking about who is projected to be highly owned and who might be some goo pivots from those golfers, released Wednesday morning.
  • Reading the Grain Podcast: A short podcast to accompany the Against the Grain article that focuses on the projected ownership for the upcoming week. Don’t like to read, or just don’t have the time? This podcast will be perfect for you, released shortly after the article.
  • The Approach Article: Written by Geoff Ulrich, this article goes over some of Geoff’s plays for the week and why he’s picking them. This article is released on Wednesday.
  • The Winning Element Article ($): Written by Jason Rouslin, this article covers my entire player pool for the week, along with the most recent weather predictions, my entire PGA DFS Results since 2016 and more. This article is released Monday and Wednesday.
  • Live before Lock Live YouTube Show: Cohosted by Ben Rasa and Jason Rouslin, it is the last show in the industry and aired at 8:30 p.m. EST on Wednesday evenings. The show winds through some of their plays for the week, along with updates on weather, tee time advantages, a “will they make the cut” segment and more. Join us each and every Wednesday.
  • Awesemo.com Tools and Projections ($): Before, during and/or after you take in all of the content provided, it’s always good to check the recommendations against some of the best projections in the industry. Done by the number one ranked fantasy player in the world, Alex Baker, with input from the entire team, you can find what their projected DFS points will be, what Alex’s value is for each golfer in the field and their ownership projections. All of these in three great tools, all released before the Live before Lock Show.

Additional Content Provided

As I mentioned above, golf is a four-day endeavor. Recently, DFS sites have caught onto this by offering one-day contests called “Showdown contests.” Each day after the conclusion of play, the team puts out showdown content in the form of an article and model:

  • Showdown Spotlight for rounds 2, 3, 4: A quick article recapping the previous day’s action and some picks for the upcoming slate.
  • In-Tourney Model: Whether you are looking for some “live” bets or just making teams for the showdown contest, this in-tourney model gives you all of the stats from the previous day(s).

There’s only one piece of content we didn’t cover, and this is for all of you that are interested in making your own model. I put out a model breakdown each week, showing all of the information provided and how I make it each week. It is released on Tuesdays.

Conclusion

Improving your knowledge base and keeping you as educated is the goal. Following the stages outlined above will provide the best course to do that. Of course, some of you will want to skip to the final stage and just get a few recommended plays. That’s all well and good, and some like that better than diving into the content, but we stress the importance of being an individual when it comes to decision making and creating lineups.
