PGA DFS: American Express DraftKings + FanDuel Round 4 Showdown Spotlight

This column is a quick-hitter article to give you the stats you need to make informed PGA DFS picks for your DraftKings and FanDuel daily fantasy lineups. We’re in search of a few recommendations for the fourth round of the American Express. In a typical Showdown GPP, DraftKings will offer upwards of $50,000 to first place for second- and third-round tournaments and sometimes up to $100,000 for the final-round contests. They also provide weekend-long contests that have been offering $25,000 to first place on average. FanDuel has also tried to get into the weekend-long and final-round contests, offering $10,000 and $5,000 to first place in their PGA DFS showdown contests.

American Final Round  PGA DFS Showdown

Previous Round Recap

With little to no wind on the course again today, it was just the players against the golf course. For the most part, the players won. Of course, there were a few players that didn’t, like Abraham Ancer, Nick Taylor and Brendan Steele, all of whom were a big part of my week-long lineups that went down the tubes today. Overnight leader Sungjae Im looked like he was going to cruise through the round, opening up with two birdies before a triple at nine sent him way down the pack.

Moving up the leaderboard and continuing their third straight day of consistent play were Tony Finau, Si Woo Kim and Max Homa. They all got to 15 under for the tournament and will tee off in the final group tomorrow. Russell Knox was the biggest mover on the day, going out and shooting an 8-under 64 to vault him from outside the top 40 to a tie for fourth. Patrick Cantlay looked to do something even greater as he approached his 17th hole. Heading to a medium-length par 5 while 8 under for the day, I thought for sure he was getting to 10 under and 1 back of the lead heading into Sunday. Unfortunately, he snap-hooked one onto someone’s patio and ended up making bogey.

General Strategy and Tournament of Champions PGA DFS Picks

Reminder, it’s the final round, so positional points are a factor. In terms of the field’s play this week, there is an overwhelming lean to both strokes gained putting and strokes gained on the approach. Since there are not many holes where the big bombers can gain a significant driving advantage, ball striking becomes less important. Keeping the ball in play is all that needs to be done this week.

Top 10 Analysis

Thirteen golfers are heading into the final round within 3 shots of the lead, with another seven golfers within 4. With the low score today hitting 64, one would think that anyone 4 back of the leaders would absolutely have a shot to win, provided they post a number. Finau and Kim have looked the most consistent, while Homa has been an absolute birdie machine, making 24 of them in the first three rounds. All that being said, it’ll be very tough to fade the leaders.

It also looks like I was a week early and a dollar short on Doug Ghim, who has a chance to earn his first top-10 on the PGA Tour with a good round tomorrow. Both he and Francesco Molinari will be my targets in this range.

Other PGA DFS Picks

  • Paul Casey ($7,800) — It was another solid round today from Casey. He has now put two good days back-to-back. Casey shot even par the first day. Had he matched the field with a score of 2 under, he would be atop the leaderboard and likely a lot higher owned. He has looked crisp with his irons all week. As it goes with Casey, just one solid round with the putter and he should be able to vault up the board.
  • Gary Woodland ($7,500) — I’ll be taking a similar approach with Woodland as I am Casey because long term these golfers are two of the best in the field this week. Woodland has been hurt, but this week he finally looks rather healthy (or at least the healthiest he’s been in some time), and all parts of the game seem to be trending in the right direction. I want to jump on that before the price goes back up.

Sneaky PGA DFS Pick for Round Three

Sam Ryder ($6,200) a

A couple of late blunders on Friday moved Ryder from the top five to outside of the top 20. A poor day with the flat stick today didn’t help him. All hope is not lost for Ryder; his iron played looked very good again, and he has two of three days — both days on the Stadium Course — where he gained over a stroke. Let’s try to catch a hot putter for a guy at $6,200.

PGA DFS Lineup Fill-Ins

Sungjae Im ($10,000)

Adam Schenk ($7,900)

Luke List ($6,900)
