PGA DFS Picks This Week: The Travelers Championship

Luckily, there is almost 20 years of course history information this week, so we know exactly how it plays and how to win here. While TPC River Highlands may be on the shorter side of PGA Tour courses, it provides an ability for any type of golfer to win, short and long alike.

Recent Form

The incredible run ended for Garrick Higgo last week, somewhat expected given his entire life trajectory. Now a full-time PGA Tour member, Higgo will get to play anywhere he wants on tour for two years, so don’t be surprised to see him play a ton of golf here in the next bit to try to learn the PGA Tour way. That inevitably will come with a bit of variance in his game. Still, he leads the tournament with five top-10s in his last 11 weeks.

Only Scottie Scheffler has four, and a pack of names check in with three. Paul Casey, a two-time runner-up at the Travelers Championship, is working on three straight top-10s. Guido Migliozzi, who continued his incredible hot form, also has three straight top-10s and is likely just a made cut away from earning status on the PGA Tour. Abraham Ancer, Cameron Smith and Sam Burns all have three top-10s yet missed the cut last week. Charley Hoffman and Brian Harman have five top-25s in the last 11 weeks, but each of them only has one top-10. At specific price points, however, they have provided a ton of value. Harman last week is a great example of that. Doc Redman is also working on four straight made cuts, with two top-10s and a runner-up finish in his last event.

Negative

It has been a tough stretch of golf for Brian Gay, who has missed seven straight cuts in the last 11 weeks. Peter Malnati is trending that way as well, having missed four straight, while Luke List has missed three. Tom Hoge and Kevin Kisner have missed six cuts in the last 11 weeks, but both found the weekend last week in San Diego, maybe signaling good things to come. In all, there are 16 golfers in the field that have missed at least five cuts in the last 11 weeks.

Course History at TPC River Highlands

No one has been as good or consistent at TPC River Highlands as Casey in the last seven years. Since 2015, he has made the trip every year, with his worst finish being 32nd. He has four other top-fives, including two runner-up finishes, and one could say that Casey could be the featured golfer of each of these first two sections.

Bryson DeChambeau’s back nine at Torrey on Sunday will likely haunt him for a bit, as a fan streaking and hitting golf balls in the middle of the tournament wasn’t something DeChambeau could get out of his mind. At least he knows this course quite well. In fact, he has made the cut in each of the last five years, getting better in every start, starting with a 47th in 2016 and having his best result last year, coming in sixth. Dustin Johnson has only come here one time in the last seven years, for whatever reason, and that was last year when he won.

Harman shows up in both these categories as well, coming in the top 10 three times since 2015. Kevin Streelman, who was closest to Johnson at least year’s event, is also one of only a handful of others with multiple top-10s here since 2014. Streelman has three, including the win back in 2014. Keegan Bradley, Brendan Steele and Bubba Watson are the other three golfers with multiple top-10s here in the last seven years. Watson, a multiple-time winner of the event, will look to shake off a bad Saturday in San Diego in search of his first top-five in quite some time.

Negative

Nick Taylor leads the category one doesn’t want to lead, having missed three straight cuts here and making only one in five tries, coming in 64th. TPC River Highlands and Taylor simply do not mesh. Michael Thompson is in a similar boat but bucked the trend of missed cuts, coming in 46th last year. Brian Gay has not bucked it, however, missing his last four attempts here. A few other big names have had some varying levels of success here. Patrick Reed and Harris English have each missed the cut three times since 2o14, but they also have at least one top-10 and two top-25s.

Strokes Gained

Whereas last week  drivers were used on every hole that wasn’t a par 3, that will not be the case here. A course that measures just 6,900 yards is always going to be a second-shot golf course, so those that are able to get hot with the irons last week will come out victorious.
