PGA DFS First Cut- Trophee Hassan II

First Cut-

Whether this is your first time reading, or you’re a Tour Vet, the First Cut should have something for you. In this “First Cut,”  we’ll cover a wide variety of topics in a short amount of time. Ultimately this article should serve as a guide for the week and what’s to come.

Here’s what you can expect to see in the article:

  • Tournament Intro
  • Course Preview= By the Numbers, Course Guide
  • DFS-Preview- Sweat-sheet/Contest Preview
  • Statistical & Player Preview

Tournament Intro: Trophee Hassan II

Opening Commentary:

A total change of pace this week, with the PGA Tour heading to New Orleans for a team event, and DraftKings has yet to figure out scoring for it, so they send us to Morroco for golf contests this week.

This Week’s Course(s): Royal Golf Dar Es Salam

Course Commentary:

This Robert Trent Jones design broke ground in the 1970s just got a considerable renovation done to it over the last two years. In Arabic, the course’s name means “House of Peace” has proven to be anything but peace to the golfers over the last few years. The course is quite long, playing 7600 yards, but makes up for it a bit with five par 5’s. They, the design team of Duncan & Co. completely redid the greens, took out a ton of trees, reconstructed the bunkers, all to improve playability while still maintaining the problematic test that faces the golfers. The changes came with welcoming reviews last year when almost all of them were implemented during the tournament last year.

Since this isn’t a PGA Tour event or course the data available to us is limited. We share what we have throughout the article.

Player & Statistical Preview:

Player Preview:

This space will merely highlight the golfers competing and their OWGR. For full-field regular events we’ll list out the top 25 ranked golfers by OWGR:

This Weeks top 25:

In terms of fields we cover, this likely will be the worst field of the year.

Statistical Preview:

Since the Euro Tour doesn’t publish their tournament by tournament SG data, all we have is the stats provided by them. Here’s what we found:

*Note we don’t have any statistical analysis on the 2016 winner Jeung-Hang Wang as he wasn’t a full-time member of the European Tour at the time of victory. So we will use Elvira’s instead.

And, here’s what we found when we looked up their strokes gained profiles from 2018:

Commentary:

The only statistic that the three winners have in common would be all three-putted pretty well, but more significantly, they were all ranked inside the top 20 in Driving Distance for the week, the only stat of the 5 followed that all three ended up inside the top 20. When we match that with what we know about the course, long and somewhat difficult, we know we can focus on golfers that favor the long ball off the tee. Here’s a sneak peek at who leads that category on the Euro Tour that’s in this field.

In addition to driving distance, Greens In Regulation play a huge factor, especially if one’s not putting superbly like we saw last year with Levy. Since GIR can be a little deceiving, here is the leaders in this field for SG: APP.
