Best PGA DFS Value Plays for the Travelers Championship | DraftKings & FanDuel Golf

The Travelers Championship follows up on an eventful U.S. Open. Matthew Fitzpatrick won his first major championship last week but won’t be in the field at TPC River Highlands, located in Cromwell, Conn., the host venue for the Travelers Championship. While the newly minted U.S. Open winner won’t be in attendance, Brooks Koepka will be, even though reports are now saying he’s signed on with the rival LIV Golf Tour. Koepka’s presence will be a strange one, but the field this week is loaded, as Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler are also in the field and set to tee things up this Thursday. We are looking to find the top plays and top daily fantasy golf picks this week for DraftKings and FanDuel contests with the help of the Stokastic site projections. Below we’ll target some of the best DFS golf picks for DraftKings and FanDuel fantasy golf contests.

2022 Travelers Championship DFS Golf Rankings & Picks

The Travelers Championship has been the regular post-U.S. Open stop for a few years now and goes back to its regular place on the schedule for the second straight season. TPC River Highlands will be a much different test for the players, as it’s typically one of the easier courses on the PGA Tour and plays relatively short (with somewhat easy rough) at 6,840 yards. The par 70 was redesigned in 1982 by Pete Dye and has hosted this event for over three decades. It has seen a variety of different styles of player win and was even the site of a round of 58, posted by Jim Furyk in 2016, who was 46 years old at the time.

TPC River Highlands Stats and Info

  • A par-70 course that often plays under 6,900 yards; features smaller greens that use poa/bentgrass and has water in play on five holes.
  • Seven of the par 4’s measure 400 to 450 yards, making short-iron play essential; the fairways are some of the easiest to hit on the PGA Tour, as players tend to average close to 70% driving accuracy, which is 5% to 7% higher than the tour average.
  • Approaches are the most vital to focus on, and four of the last five winners have gained five strokes or more on approach in the week of their win.

The Travelers 2022 DFS Golf Picks & Fantasy Golf Rankings

Rory McIlroy: Grades: A, Values: A

Despite falling just short in another major, Rory McIlroy tops the Stokastic PGA DFS projections this week. He was outperformed by Scottie Scheffler at the U.S. Open but remains the favorite play of the DFS golf projections for the Travelers, with a total points projection that is nearly 2 points higher than Scheffler’s. There’s not much between these two right now, with Scheffler having posted two runner-up finishes in his last three starts and McIlroy a win in Canada two weeks ago.

This will be McIlroy’s fourth start in this event since 2019, however, and he’s finished progressively better in each one of those starts, with a career-best 11th place at this venue last year. McIlroy has been great around the green at River Highlands, gaining over three strokes in each of the past two seasons at this event. Seeing him take down another win this week wouldn’t be shocking, and Stokastic suggests spending up on him.

Projected PGA DFS ownership: DraftKings: 23.7% | FanDuel: 40.2%

The Stats:

  • Has gained over two strokes around the greens at TPC River Highlands in each of his three career starts at the venue.
  • Leads the field in DraftKings points over the last 50 rounds; has finished outside the top 10 once in his last six starts.

Aaron Wise: Grades: A, Values: A

If paying up for a stud like McIlroy as a first move, the second move should be to look for some higher upside down below the $9,000 range on DraftKings, if possible. Aaron Wise is a target that fits that profile this week, as he has the highest point projection and win rate of any player under $9,000 on DraftKings.

Wise was in contention over the first 50 holes at the U.S. Open but fell off to a 27th-place finish. The poor Sunday likely is what is keeping his ownership palatable this week (projecting under 15% rostered for now). After all, it was just three weeks ago that Wise was competing on Sunday for a win at the tougher Muirfield Village track, and he now ranks fifth in strokes gained on approach over the last 24 rounds and was also second last week in strokes gained around the green. He has a strong value score and looks ready to breakout and deliver another big fantasy week soon.

Projected PGA DFS ownership: DraftKings: 12.4% | FanDuel: 10.4%

The Stats:

  • Ranks fifth in strokes gained on approach over the last 24 rounds and seventh over the last 50 rounds; was second in strokes gained around the green last week at The Country Club.
  • Has made the cut at TPC River Highlands in each of his two career appearances and gained strokes around the green in each of those appearances at the course as well.

Top 3 Under 5% in DraftKings Fantasy Golf This Week

This section will target players that should end up under or close to 5% ownership in larger DraftKings Golf GPPs. These picks are boom/bust PGA DFS players with an almost 100% focus on the upside.

Emiliano Grillo ($7,100)

Grillo enters off a week of rest and two solid starts in a row. He has now made his last five cuts on the PGA Tour and showcased higher-end ball striking in his last two starts, gaining 8.1 strokes ball striking alone in his last start in Canada. He’s played this event numerous times and shot 65 in the second round at River Highlands last season.

Cam Davis ($7,500)

It is a little surprising that Cam Davis isn’t trending for a little more heat this week. He has two top-10s in his last six starts and has seen both his approach and putting go on a nice uptrend of late. As a daily fantasy play, Davis has always been a high birdie producer, so his $7,500 salary and sub-5% ownership projection are very appealing.

Danny Lee ($6,600)

Apologies in advance for mentioning Danny Lee. He did gain multiple strokes both off the tee and on approach in his two starts before the U.S. Open, though. Lee is the epitome of boom or bust, but his ball striking is on an uptrend and the easier setup at River Highlands has gelled nicely with his game in the past (third in 2017). He’ll have little to no ownership in GPPs this week.
