Best PGA DFS Value Plays for the John Deere Classic | DraftKings & FanDuel Golf

The PGA Tour has just two more regular season starts on the docket before the British Open Championship at St. Andrews. The John Deere Classic is a mainstay on the PGA schedule but has been moved slightly on the schedule this year to two weeks before the Open. This has seemingly hurt the field, as the highest-ranked player playing this week is Webb Simpson, who is 58th in the OWGR. To say this event will be wide open is an understatement, and while players like Simpson and Adam Hadwin could certainly dominate, it’s just as likely that a player from well back in the field (at 100-1 or better) will grab a win.

2022 John Deere Classic DFS Golf Rankings & Picks

The John Deere Classic goes back to the 1970s but has been hosted by TPC Deere Run since 2000. It is a shorter par 71 at around 7,268 yards that provides the players with three very scoreable par 5’s and a bunch of short par 4’s. The winners here almost always reach 20 under par or better, and in 2019 it yielded a scoring average under 70 for the week. Approach play and accuracy off the tee are important here, and short irons are the key approach clubs to focus on — 125 to 175 yards is the busiest basket of shots the players will face. However, putting is the end game, with the last three winners having all gained at least 7.5 strokes on the greens for the week of their win.

As always, we are looking to find the top values and top daily fantasy golf picks this week for DraftKings and FanDuel contests with the help of the Stokastic projections. Below we’ll target some of the best DFS golf picks for DraftKings and FanDuel fantasy golf contests.

TPC Deere Run Stats and Info

  • Par 71, 7,268 yards; features bentgrass greens and seven par 4’s that measure under 450 yards.
  • Par 4’s will mostly demand shorter approaches, with 125 to 150 yards in proximity being the key distance that many players will zone in on.
  • The last three winners here have gained 7.5 strokes or more putting, and 2019 winner Dylan Frittelli even lost strokes on his approaches; scoring is key and how one does it is irrelevant.

John Deere Classic 2022 DFS Golf Picks & Fantasy Golf Rankings

Maverick McNealy: Grades: A, Values: C

It’s one of those weeks where several players will have sticker shock attached to them for daily fantasy golf purposes. Maverick McNealy is just one of those players, as most usually roster him when he’s in the mid-$7,000 range on DraftKings. Despite his salary moving up to $9,500, McNealy is trending in the Stokastic projections as one of the best values among the upper tier of golfers. He’s ranked fourth in the projections this week and has the best value score of any golfer over $9,000 on DraftKings.

The nice thing about getting on McNealy this week is that it doesn’t seem like he’ll have a ton of heat attached to him either. His ownership projections on both sites are well under 15% as of writing, which is fantastic for a player who has made 15 of 18 cuts and has had high ownership attached to him at various times this season. As for setup, McNealy may have missed a couple of cuts coming in, but he remains an elite putter and a player capable of going low on a shorter venue like Deere Run. For GPPs, making McNealy the top gun this week makes sense.

Projected PGA DFS ownership: DraftKings: 11.5% | FanDuel: 12.8%

Adam Long : Grades: B, Values: B

Adam Long has played some solid golf over the last two months and ranks highly for this week. He’s eighth in the Stokastic projections despite being just the 13th-most expensive player on DraftKings at $8,600. and he is coming off back-to-back top-25 finishes. Long can be hit or miss with his approaches, but his consistency off the tee and his ability to go nuclear with the putter (he gained 9.1 strokes putting last week) set him up perfectly as an upside play for TPC Deere Run. The fact that he has played this event twice already — and posted finishes of 53rd and 23rd in those two starts — certainly adds to the idea that TPC Deere Run is the kind of place where deploying Long is a savvy move, especially against weaker fields.

Projected PGA DFS ownership: DraftKings: 15.7% | FanDuel: 13.7%

Top 3 Under 5% in DraftKings Fantasy Golf This Week

This section will target players that should end up under or close to 5% ownership in larger DraftKings Golf GPPs. These picks are boom/bust PGA DFS players with an almost 100% focus on the upside.

David Lipsky ($7,400)

David Lipsky is once again a solid, lower-owned target in GPPs, especially against this weak of a field. He missed the cut last week, but it was a result of a meltdown on one tricky hole and he actually struck the ball quite well. He has posted his best results in these weaker-field events where the big names aren’t around.

Chris Gotterup ($7,300)

Chris Gotterup won the 2022 Haskins and Nicklaus awards as the country’s top college player and has been attempting to gain status on the PGA Tour through exemptions. His 43rd place at the U.S. Open was encouraging, and he followed it up with a 35th last week at the Travelers. This is a spot where he should gain a bunch of points, and he makes sense as a lower-owned flier in GPP lineups.

Bill Haas ($6,700)

No, it is not 2015 again, but Bill Haas is starting to show signs that he is a potential roster filler in these weaker fields. Haas has now made three of his last four cuts on the PGA Tour and gained 4.6 strokes on approach alone last week. He grabbed a 10th-place finish at Deere Run in 2019 and should have next to no ownership attached in GPPs.
