The Rocket Mortgage Classic has become synonymous with low scoring since it came on the PGA Tour, and don’t expect much to change in that regard this week. For DFS purposes, Detroit Golf Club remains one of the most driver-friendly courses on the PGA Tour and has seen the winner get to 18 under or better in each of the past three seasons.

The course this week is the North Course at Detroit Golf Club, a Donald Ross design that was renovated recently in order to handle hosting duties for this event. The venue plays at 7,330 yards but is a par 72 and features four easier par 5’s. Detroit Golf Club also has poa annua greens (which are generally on the West Coast) and some of the easier-to-hit fairways on tour. Given the wider fairways and lack of doglegs on the course, driver is a popular club for the pros, and driving distance at this venue tends to be around 10 yards higher than average. Big hitters have prospered at this event as a result, but it’s worth noting that there has been an eclectic blend of players in the mix most seasons, with last year’s playoff featuring Troy Merritt and Cam Davis — two players who are polar opposites on the style-of-play spectrum.

The venue features numerous shorter par 4’s, and that has made 125 to 150 yards the busiest grouping for approaches; 150 to 175 yards is also a popular yardage for approaches.
Four of the par 4’s here measure under 400 yards, and the venue saw each of the top-12 finishers in the field last season gain at least 1.4 strokes putting for the week.

Rocket Mortgage Classic 2022 DFS Golf Picks & Golf Projections

Patrick Cantlay

Total Points Projection: 96.5 | Top 6 percentage: 34.56%

The projections this week couldn’t be much clearer, they LOVE Patrick Cantlay. To give you some perspective on Cantlay this week, it was just a few weeks ago at the Open Championship that Rory McIlroy was the Stokastic PGA Model’s first choice. That week he had a 26% top-6 projection. This week, Cantlay’s same projection for a top-6 finish is pushing over 34%. He’s also got the highest pure points projection on the site by 6.0 points over second place — a massive gap at the top we don’t see often during the year.

Cantlay will be popular (as ownership projections show), but he is fully capable of coming to this field and blowing the top off. He is ranked top 20 in nearly every single strokes gained category over the last 50 rounds and has gained over 3.0 strokes putting in his last two starts on mainland USA. He’s a worthy favorite and at $10,700 on DraftKings, he ranks out entirely too cheap considering the weaker field.

Five straight finishes of T14 or better on the PGA TOUR; ranks second in DraftKings points gained over the last 50 rounds.
Has gained strokes against the field across all major categories in his last two USA-based starts.

Russell Henley

Total Points Projection: 75.2 | Top 6 percentage: 12.1%

In terms of players who looked depressed in price this week, the model certainly thinks it’s time to give Russell Henley another chance. He has played a sparse summer schedule thus far but did make the trip overseas and grinded out a made cut at the Open. There’s not much to go on here in terms of recent results, but Henley’s long-term form suggests he’s one of the better values in the low-$8,000 range on DraftKings. He has the best value score on Stokastic above $8,000 on DraftKings and also has the highest point projection of anyone below $8,500 on that site as well.

Henley certainly comes with a little more risk given his missed-cut rate of late, but his ceiling this week is superior to a lot of those around him in price. Still ranked seventh in strokes gained on approach over the last 50 rounds, his elite iron game could give plenty of opportunities this week to get hot with the putter, and it’s worth noting he finished seventh at the Donald Ross-designed Sedgefield last season.

Anytime Cameron Champ is coming off a decent week (and available at smaller salary) in a weaker field, he is worth a look. He has essentially been a one-win-a-year player since entering the PGA as a rookie, and his unique blend of power off the tee and ability to gain multiple strokes putting (when that club is working well) is nearly unparalleled.

Champ broke a string of missed cuts last week in Minnesota, where he gained multiple strokes on approach and putting, and now comes to a venue in Detroit Golf Club that features four short par 5’s. Despite all this, DFS players seem to be hesitant, as he’s projecting for well under 10% ownership. No player under $8,000 on DraftKings has a better pure ceiling.

Top 3 Under 5% in DraftKings Fantasy Golf This Week

This section will target players that should end up under or close to 5% ownership in larger DraftKings Golf GPPs. These picks are boom/bust PGA DFS players with an almost 100% focus on the upside.

Hayden Buckley ($6,900)

Buckley has been absolutely smashing the ball lately. He’s 12th in strokes gained off the tee over the last 50 rounds and has gained over four strokes on approach in his last two starts. Any found confidence with the putter this week could lead to big things.

Michael Gligic ($7,000)

Gligic is another player who looks perfectly set up for success in Detroit. While his approach game isn’t the best, he’s killing it off the tee on a weekly basis and has been confident on the greens of late. That is a perfect recipe for success on Detroit Golf Club.

Callum Tarren ($7,100)

Tarren was featured in this spot last week and paid off in spades. He shot a second-round 64 last week in Minnesota and has been showing spurts of very high-end golf lately. Tarren gained over nine strokes ball striking in Minnesota, yet the DFS community seems hesitant to roster him, as he’s trending for very low ownership in the Stokastic PGA DFS ownership projections again.
