DFS Golf Picks This Week & Expert Rankings for the WGC Dell Match Play 2022

There are only a few weeks until the first major of the season, but before that, fans are presented with a unique opportunity for fantasy golf this week. The WGC Dell Match Play 2022 is here, and it brings a different take on DFS golf picks for DraftKings. Gone are the placing and birdie points usually relied on. Instead, players need to advance from their pods and get match/hole win points. This week, the scoring relies on how far players advance in the round-robin and bracket-style event, so diving into pod matchups will be key.

From a PGA DFS perspective, it will also be important to create your lineups in the optimal fashion by not overloading your players in one pod or bracket of the draw. Ultimately, you want to give yourself a chance at having four players reach the final four positions in the tournament, so make sure you are filling out rosters accordingly. As for the venue, Austin Country Club will be the host. It is a shorter par 71 that plays around 7,000 yards and was designed by Pete Dye. The course has a nice blend of scoring holes and a few challenging ones where par will likely win the day.

DFS Golf Rankings & Expert Picks: WGC Dell Match Play 2022

Austin Country Clubs Stats and Info

  • Par 71, 7,108 yards; the venue was designed by Pete Dye and has been used as the host for this event since 2016.
  • The venue is set up differently between the two nines, with the front being more rolling and tree-lined, while the back is flat in parklands and goes along the river.
  • Three par 5’s and one drivable par 4 on the course; players can score here without being super long, and the last event held here had Matt Kuchar and Kevin Kisner in the final.

Putting Splits

The greens at Austin Country Club are TifEagle Bermuda. Bermudagrass tends to be more dormant here this time of year, but this article will still be using Bermuda putting splits for a guide. Here is a more general look at some of the best and worst Bermuda putters in the field relative to their strokes gained on other surfaces. Use caution with these in your daily fantasy golf picks; they are not the be-all, end-all, but they make for a nice tiebreaker.

Positive Bermuda Putting Splits, Last 50 Rounds

  1. Christiaan Bezuidenhout: +39 strokes on Bermudagrass, +6 on all other surfaces
  2. Kevin Kisner: +34 on Bermudagrass, +8 on all other surfaces
  3. Matthew Fitzpatrick: +45 on Bermudagrass, +18 on all other surfaces
*+ equals total strokes gained | – equals strokes lost

Negative Bermuda Putting Splits, Last 50 Rounds

  1. Adam Scott: +13 on Bermudagrass, +38 on all other surfaces
  2. Seamus Power: -3 on Bermudagrass, +14 on all other surfaces
  3. Jordan Spieth: +5 on Bermudagrass, +18 on all other surfaces

DFS Golf Picks & Fantasy Golf Rankings for DraftKings & FanDuel

Xander Schauffele

Xander Schauffele comes in a tad under the radar this week. The Olympic gold medalist missed the cut at the Players but bounced back with a 12th place finish at the Valspar last week. Schauffele has had a bit of a non-descript season so far this year, as his only real shot at a win came at the WM Phoenix Open, where he started the final round in the lead but quickly fell back and finished third.

Schauffele has good experience playing this format and has made a living winning these shorter-field events. Schauffele has never won his pod group in three prior match play appearances, but he has also never posted a losing record in the pod stage either. He is projecting with a very strong top-16 probability (over 40%) and has the best blend of PGA DFS projections and win probability of any player under $10,000 on DraftKings this week. He has a weak group and palatable PGA ownership projections, which should make him a great GPP target.

Projected PGA DFS ownership: DraftKings: 18.8%

Billy Horschel

Last year’s winner of this event, Billy Horschel, has also started 2022 extremely well. Prior to his Players withdrawal, Horschel had posted four consecutive top-20 finishes, a run that included a runner-up finish at the Arnold Palmer. Horschel has been trending well and has shown exceedingly good iron play of late, gaining over +4.0 strokes on Approach in his starts at the Honda Classic and Arnold Palmer.

Horschel then fits the prototypical Pete Dye player, as his short approaches lately have been great. He also has a short game/putter that have been spiking consistently in 2022. Going back-to-back is a big ask but Horschel has a very winnable group with talented, but unproven, Match Play players like Tom Hoge and Thomas Pieters in his group. Horschel is the strongest sub-$9,000 in the PGA DFS projections and someone you should be looking to for DFS golf picks this week.

Projected PGA DFS ownership: DraftKings: 13.6%

Low-Owned Daily Fantasy Golf GPP Flier

Max Homa ($7,700)

Max Homa does not have the greatest draw, as he will be locked in a pod with Dustin Johnson, a former winner of this event and a player with an underrated match-play record. Still, Homa has truly outplayed Johnson to begin the season and rolls into the WGC Match Play event with four top-20 finishes under his belt. He has gained over +7.0 strokes ball-striking in his last two starts and is also coming off a career-best 13th-place finish at the Players.

Last year, Homa played this event for the first time and ended up winning two of three matches, a record which included a win over his pod’s number one seed, Collin Morikawa. Since then, he has also gained his third PGA Tour win and looks like a player on the verge of competing for bigger trophies. At under $8,000 on DraftKings and with an ownership percentage under 10.0 for the week, Homa sets up as a solid GPP target for DFS golf this week.

Projected PGA DFS ownership: DraftKings: 8.4%

Top Three Under 5% in DraftKings Fantasy Golf This Week

This section will target three players that should end up under or close to 5% ownership in larger DraftKings GPPs. These picks are boom/bust players with an almost 100% focus on the upside.

Patrick Reed ($7,500)

How many people will give Patrick Reed a chance this week with Jon Rahm in his group? The answer is not many. Reed has never had a losing record in the pod stage since the event moved to Austin and did show better form at the Players, where he gained over a stroke on Approach and +9.0 strokes putting.

Lucas Herbert ($6,100)

Lucas Herbert is a talented young Australian player who grabbed his first PGA win over the fall on another short, quirky track in Bermuda. He has been putting very well of late and should be free-wheeling this week after grabbing another top-10 in Florida at the API. With Tony Finau off his game, his group feels wide open and Herbert is putting well enough right now to win him some matches this week.

Si Woo Kim ($7,100)

Si Woo Kim is again in another tough grouping, but it should make him a very viable low-rostered play in GPPs. He will have to best the likes of Daniel Berger and Tyrrell Hatton, but has a great history of solid play on Pete Dye venues to fall back on. Kim was playing solid golf prior to withdrawing at the Players and should be considered a good GPP target this week.
