PGA DFS Optimizer Picks: Wyndham Championship Leverage Leaders for DraftKings & FanDuel GPP Lineups | 8/3

The 2022 PGA Tour regular season concludes this week with the Wyndham Championship. Since 2008, this tournament has only been played at the Donald Ross-designed Sedgefield Country Club (par 70, 7,131 yards, Bermuda greens), located in Greensboro, N.C. Following the 2022 Wyndham Championship, the top 125 players in the FedEx Cup rankings will move onto the FedEx St. Jude Championship, which is the first of three events for the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Below are some of the top PGA DFS optimizer picks for the Wyndham Championship using Stokastic’s Top Golfers Tool.

PGA DFS Optimal Picks for the Wyndham Championship

Sedgefield is a prototypical second-shot course that doesn’t require distance off the tee. Of the past five Wyndham champions, four have ranked inside the top four in strokes gained on approach during their victories. Furthermore, for three years running, the winner of this event has finished the week outside the top 50 in driving distance, which is a result of most of the field clubbing down off the tee to find the fairways and avoid the trees. Lastly, being efficient on the par 4’s is critical to contending at Sedgefield, particularly on the 400- to 450-yard 450 par 4’s. Eight of the 12 par 4’s in Greensboro fall in this range, and over the last five years, four of the golfers to take home the top prize at Sedgefield have finished top three in strokes gained on these specific holes.

Tyrrell Hatton

Stokastic PGA Optimizer Leverage Scores Ranks: DraftKings: 2nd, FanDuel: 6th

Hatton arrives in Greensboro on the heels of an 11th-place finish at the British Open, in which he gained strokes in every major category. Hatton has now advanced to the weekend in 12 of his last 14 starts worldwide and has eight top-25 finishes. He did miss the cut in his only appearance at Sedgefield, but this came all the way back in 2016. Regardless of this result, it’s hard to argue against Hatton being a strong course fit. His irons have been promising, gaining strokes on approach in back-to-back starts, and he also ranks 10th in strokes gained on par 4’s in the 400- to 450-yard range over his last 50 rounds. Additionally, Hatton is one of the best putters in the world on Bermuda, ranking second in total strokes gained over the last 50 rounds on Bermuda. More specifically, he has carded seven top-30 finishes in his last eight attempts on Bermudagrass, including a pair of runner-up finishes. Hatton should find himself in the mix for a win come Sunday afternoon. Plus, he is a sharp contrarian target, with most DFS players looking elsewhere in the high price range. According to Stokastic’s Top Golfers Tool, Hatton is projected for single-digit ownership on both DraftKings and FanDuel.

C.T. Pan

Stokastic PGA Optimizer Leverage Scores Ranks: DraftKings: 37th, FanDuel: 39th

Expect Pan to bounce back this week after missing the cut at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Despite being sent home early, he still gained strokes on approach at Detroit Golf Club, and before this Pan had made it to the weekend in 11 of his previous 13 starts, which is a run that includes six top-30 finishes. Over his last 50 rounds, Pan ranks in the top 25 in both strokes gained on approach and strokes gained on 400- to 450-yard par 4’s. He also has a spotless 4-for-4 record in made cuts at Sedgefield. Most notably, Pan finished runner-up at the 2018 Wyndham Championship, when he led the field in both strokes gained tee to green and strokes gained on the par 4’s at Sedgefield. Pan brings top-20 upside this week at an affordable cost and is slated for very low ownership on both DraftKings and FanDuel, according to Stokastic’s Top Golfers Tool.

Rory Sabbatini

Stokastic PGA Optimizer Leverage Scores Ranks: DraftKings: 21st, FanDuel: 35th

Sabbatini has made 9 of his last 11 cuts and is fresh off a closing-round 5-under 67 at the Ross-designed Detroit Golf Club this past Sunday. Evident from this low number, Sabbatini has a knack for Ross courses. In fact, he ranks third in total strokes gained over the last 50 rounds at Ross designs. Sabbatini has made five of his last six cuts at Sedgefield, including four top-10 finishes, one of which came at last year’s Wyndham Championship. To put the icing on the cake, Sabbatini must add another high finish this weekend if he wants any chance of qualifying for the playoffs, with him currently sitting 151st in the FedEx Cup rankings. With Stokastic’s Top Golfers Tool projecting Sabbatini for less than 1% ownership on both DraftKings and FanDuel, he is a fantastic, cheap sleeper for GPPs.

Roger Sloan

Stokastic PGA Optimizer Leverage Scores Ranks: DraftKings: 63rd, FanDuel: 40th

If looking for a full punt play, look no further than Sloan. He was one of the six players who competed in the historic playoff at last year’s Wyndham Championship, which was eventually won by Kevin Kisner. This runner-up finish marked the third straight year that Sloan proceeded through the cut at Sedgefield. A year later, he is finally starting to see his game come back to life just in time for his return to Greensboro. After an ugly stretch of missing eight cuts in a row, Sloan has finished 38th and 49th in his last two starts while shooting under par in seven of these eight rounds. At both of these events, Sloan gained strokes on approach and with his putter, showing his game is trending in the right direction. While he may not contend again, Sloan should be able to make the cut this week, which is all he needs at his salary.
