PGA DFS Picks: ZOZO Championship

This column will include 6 to 12 players as part of the core, which earns the highest allocation on DFS and is matched with bets across the board. Collin Morikawa will be in the core any week he is playing, so he will be omitted from the selected players this week. Morikawa is atop the field in both ownership projections and salary.

The climate in this area of Japan is similar to the Southern United States, with average temperatures in October in the mid-70s.

Top PGA DFS Picks for DraftKings and FanDuel

These golfers will have anywhere between 20% and 50% allocation.

Hideki Matsuyama ($10,100 DraftKings/$11,700 FanDuel)

The Vegas swing for Matsuyama did not go as well as his first couple of starts this year, but that was mainly due to his horrific putting;. He lost almost nine strokes with his putter last week, an average of 2.4 per day. However, his tee-to-green play looked good. He ranked inside the top 10 last week, even with his terrible putting, which knocked him out of the tournament for the most part. Maybe playing in front of a home crowd will wake his putter up and put him in the winner circle in his home country.

Jhonattan Vegas ($8,900 DraftKings/$9,800 FanDuel)

Coming in as one of the projected highest-owned golfers of the week, Vegas’s off-tee game is too good to pass up.  He has been playing solid golf for a few months now, as he has only finished outside of the top 15 twice in his last nine starts. If ball striking proves to be the main ingredient to success this week, Vegas should hang around the top part of the leaderboard for most of it.

Carlos Ortiz ($8,600 DraftKings/$9,900 FanDuel)

After a terrible few weeks with the putter, Ortiz seemed to find a little something over the weekend, gaining two strokes on Saturday and matching the field on Sunday. His ball-striking stats have looked solid throughout this fall swing, gaining another six strokes last week. If that continues into this week, and the putter continues to improve, he will be in the top 10 by Sunday. Now, all he needs to do is avoid the big number like he had in the Olympics, and he should be in for a good finish this week.

Garrick Higgo ($7,800 DraftKings/$8,900 FanDuel)

Since his breakthrough win a few months ago at the Palmetto Championship, Higgo has regressed quite a bit. But he is an excellent putter and can get incredibly hot with his irons. In a no-cut event where almost nobody wants to play him, it seems like a good spot to go back to Higgo.

PGA Picks Under or at $7,000

With no-cut this week, there is a bit more sense of comfort knowing there are four guaranteed rounds for all golfers.

Tom Hoge ($7,000 DraftKings/$8,300 FanDuel)

While he is not impressive off the tee, Hoge’s irons when on are some of the 25 best on tour. He had a solid Vegas swing in terms of DFS points, putting up over 90 in both events. While his finish position was not great, that does not matter this week as long his irons stay hot and he finds his putter for one or two rounds.

Doug Ghim ($7,000 DraftKings/$8,800 FanDuel)

Cut events are a bad spot to play Ghim, as he sometimes loses focus for a few holes and misses more cuts than he should. But with a good wedge game and long iron game, the par-4 distribution on this course should play right into his strengths. Unless he misses a tee time or gets injured, he is guaranteed four rounds this week, and at this salary, there is no way he will not provide a solid return.

Chesson Hadley ($6,900 DraftKings/$8,000 FanDuel)

Hadley is on a tremendous run that got him into this field. He made a hole-in-one in the last round of the regular season, which propelled him into the playoffs and ultimately into this event, and he has a chance to start the season off with three made cuts and three finishes inside the top 45. That may not seem all that great, but every point counts at the end of the season, and a top-10 can go a long way to retaining his membership on the PGA Tour.

Troy Merritt ($6,900 DraftKings/$8,300 FanDuel)

Merritt had a fantastic middle part of the season, finishing top 10 four times over an eight-event stretch and placing second at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. It has not been as good since, but he came in 27th at the Alfred Dunhill and 16th Fortinet Championship, so he seems to be trending in the right direction. He had a bit of a setback at the Shriners, with his short game leading to him missing the cut by 1, but he gained four strokes with his irons in two rounds. If he maintains that pace this week and his putter gets hot for two rounds, he will pay off this salary quickly and will be an essential aspect of PGA DFS lineups.

Kyle Stanley ($6,200 DraftKings/$7,800 FanDuel)

When he goes cold, Stanley might be the worst putter on the PGA Tour. That is the stretch Stanley is on right now, as he lost almost five strokes in two rounds at the Shriners. But his irons popped back on Friday, gaining him over four strokes on that day. While he will not be able to do that every day this week, Stanley provides upside because of how good his irons can be as long as his putting holds up.
