Round 2 CJ Cup Showdown PGA DFS Picks for DraftKings & FanDuel Lineups | Friday, 10/15/21

Birdies were bountiful today in Round 1 of the CJ Cup at The Summit club, providing some high scores for PGA DFS. Much of the same is expected for tomorrow’s Round 2 where DraftKings is offering $20,000 to first place. Let’s break down Round 1 and go over some DFS golf advice for making our PGA DFS picks and building our showdown lineups for Friday’s second round.

Round 1 Recap

Two popular names this week, Maverick McNealy and Aaron Wise, both were out early, in the first two groups. McNealy had it going before incurring a waterball double on the back nine and settled for an opening-round 69. Wise caught fire right as his girlfriend was caught saying “yeah, if he’d make a putt …”

After this tweet was sent, he birdied his last four holes and set the pace for the day with a 66. Robert Streb, however, already was lower than -6 by the time Wise finished, playing his first seven holes at six-under. He kept it going for most of the round, except one bogey, and posted a first-round-best 61. Keith Mitchell a target of mine for the week-long slate caught fire and shot 62. He said that even though he missed the cut last week, on the number, he grinded the last three days, and flew in his putting coach. It paid off today leading the field in strokes gained putting in the first round. The only other scores lower than 66 on the day belong to Hudson Swafford, Sergio Garcia, Harry Higgs, Talor Gooch and Russell Henley.

Notables:

Justin Thomas had a good start to the tournament, but a bogey triple ending to his front nine sent him to close to last place. But he rebounded and ended up shooting 69, showing his form might not be far off. Jordan Spieth leads a whole host of names that shot 66 on the day, including Cameron Smith, Hideki Matsuyama, Scottie Scheffler, Ian Poulter, and even Rickie Fowler. Dustin Johnson the highest-priced player on the slate played awful, shooting one of the few over par rounds, settling in with a two-over 74.

PGA DFS DraftKings Showdown Picks

It sure seems that the golfers teeing off in the morning will have the easier set of conditions as the wind is expected to be blowing at an average rate of 20 miles per hour all afternoon.

• Jordan Spieth ($9,200): What if I told you Spieth would lose strokes with both his putter and iron game, and still shoot 66? What if I told you under 10% of the field wants to roster him? Pair him up with Brooks Koepka as they are playing partners and seem to be feeding off one another.
• Scottie Scheffler ($8,600): A terrible round on Thursday at the Shriners gave him virtually no chance to make the cut. But a 10-birdie Friday gave him plenty of momentum heading into this week. His putter remained hot on Thursday, gaining almost three strokes in Round 1. While that is unlikely to repeat itself, his off-the-tee game is not likely to lose almost two. So, keep everything else equal and he presents solid upside in this price range. He should not be too highly owned either
• Joaquin Niemann ($7,900): Continuing to build on his last three rounds at Shriners, similar to Scheffler, Niemann gained 2.39 strokes tee to green in Round 1. Now we have to try and time his hot putter day, which is bound to come at least once, and given his salary for Round 2, this presents a good time to do it.
• Joohyung Kim ($6,000): Also known as Tom Kim, named after Thomas the Tank Engine, Tom is one of the biggest prospects out of South Korea and has a talent level that is supposed to rival Sungjae Im. While Im broke through the Korn Ferry Tour, via the Korean Tour, Kim, still 19, is playing most of his golf on the Korean Tour and playing well. His putter looked good in Round 1 but will need to have his tee-to-green game pick up in Round 2 to provide a solid return.
