PGA DFS: The Fit & Form Guide for the Zozo Championship

The focus of this article is combining course history and recent form articles to showcase two of the most essential elements when building out PGA DFS lineups each week. Let’s get into the Fit & Form guide to make your PGA DFS picks for your daily fantasy lineups on DraftKings and FanDuel for the Zozo Championship.

PGA DFS Picks | Form From Past 11 Weeks

There are 78 golfers this week, but with at least 10 golfers that play primarily on the Japan Golf Tour, information will be useful. Reminder: There is no cut this week.

There are only six golfers in this field that haven’t competed at least once in the last three weeks, and only one, Brand Kennedy, who hasn’t competed in the last 11 weeks.

Positive

Top 10s

Xander Schauffele has done everything but win. That’s if you count the second place at The Tour Championship as a second-place finish and not a first, which the OWGR counts it as. Anyway, not to confuse you, he has four top 10s in the last 11 weeks regardless of what you view the Tour Championship finish as, and he’s the only golfer to do so in this field. Eleven others have three, including Tyrrell Hatton, Patrick Reed, Webb Simpson, Russell Henley, Sebastian Munoz, Matthew Wolff, Tony Finau, Scottie Scheffler and Mackenzie Hughes.

Top 25s

The other two golfers with three top 10s in the last 11 weeks are Harris English and Jon Rahm, who also have six top 25s. Hatton, Reed, Simpson and Munoz are joined by Jason Kokrak, Kevin Kisner, Hideki Matsuyama and Cameron Smith as the others with five top 25s in the last 11 weeks.

Trending Up

  • After a bit of a rough patch through the playoffs, Reed bounced back with three straight top 15s, including a third place at the BMW Championship a few weeks ago.
  • The same goes for Justin Thomas, who has reeled off three straight top 12s, including an eighth-place finish at the U.S. Open.
  • Joaquin Niemann has remained hot after a bad stretch through the playoffs last year that saw him miss a couple of cuts. He’s now reeled off three straight top 25s.
  • Smith has made all seven cuts in these 11 weeks. Only one golfer has more made cuts without one missed: Brian Harman. In those starts, Smith has five top 25s, including two straight. Harman has five top 30s, including two straight.
  • After missing three cuts in a four-week tournament span, Matthew Fitzpatrick has bounced back with back-to-back top 12s, including a seventh-place finish at the BMW PGA Championship.

Top 10s

Twenty-eight golfers in the field this week will be in search of their first top 10 in a professional event in the last 11 weeks. Some of the bigger names on this list that might surprise you are Adam Scott and Viktor Hovland. Hovland, however, has four top 20s, including three straight top 15s, so it’s not like he’s that far off. Same with Smith, who has five top 25s but no top 10s. A few others include Adam Hadwin, Andrew Landry, Rickie Fowler, Matt Kuchar, Tyler Duncan, Corey Conners, Dylan Frittelli, Jordan Spieth and Byeong Hun An.

Top 25s

The list shrinks to just 13 golfers that don’t have a top 25 in the last 11 weeks. They are Tiger Woods, Gary Woodland, Kevin Na, Marc Leishman, Nick Taylor, Satoshi Kodaira, Chan Kim, Michael Thompson, Brad Kennedy, Spieth, Fowler, Landry and Hadwin. I like my odds of getting one or two of these 13 across the top 25 mark this week.

Trending Down

  • Since returning from COVID-19, Scheffler has noticeable struggled. He’s missed a cut and came in 52nd and 37th in the other two weeks. Before going out for COVID, he was playing just about as well as anyone in the world.
  • It was not long ago that Hughes had a chance to win at Corales, but the other two starts outside of that are a missed cut at the U.S. Open and a 65th-place finish last week. He had been on a run of three straight tournaments with a finish inside the top 13.
  • Alex Noren had been on a nice stretch of golf before last week, coming inside the top 25 three times in four starts. But last week he finished dead last in DFS scoring, and he is really struggling with his game.
  • Adam Long had a chance to win at Corales four weeks ago and has struggled since. He had a missed cut at the Sanderson Farms and a 74th-place finish last week.

Course History at Sherwood Country Club

We haven’t had a tournament here since 2013, and even then, it was a limited field. I’ll present the data, but I’m not putting much weight on it this week. In fact, only nine of the 78 golfers in the field have a start here.

Positive

In four starts, Woods finished inside the top five in all of them with one win and two runner-ups. No one else in the field has a win or multiple top fives other than Paul Casey, who has two third-place finishes.

Fit & Form for PGA DFS

With so little course history to go off of and only 18-man fields to look at, there isn’t much to try and match up in terms of actual results, but here are the golfers that meet the eye in terms of expected fit and good recent form:

  • Rahm has six straight top 25s and a win at a Jack Nicklaus course earlier in the year.
  • Simpson is working off of five straight top 17s and has two top 10s in three trips to Sherwood Country Club.
  • Smith has six top 25s in the last 11 week, and he has a win at a course with similar expected dimensions and attributes this week for playing well. He did it earlier this year at the Sony Open.
