John Deere Classic 2022 PGA One and Done Picks

The British Open Championship is quickly approaching, but before that, there are two more PGA tournaments on the schedule. These don’t bring in the strongest fields, but for One and Done they are a chance to play some lesser-known golfers. As the season draws later and later, these weeks become increasingly important, and cashing a big check at the John Deere Classic could make the difference at the end of the season. Let’s dive into who is available and who makes the most sense as a One and Done target this week.

PGA One and Done Picks: John Deere Classic 2022

Travelers Championship 2022 One and Done Recap

Patrick Cantlay

It seemed like this was the answer after 54 holes, as Patrick Cantlay was primed to add another win to his resume. There are plenty of Sunday meltdowns over the course of a PGA Tour season, but Cantlay’s last week was towards the top of the list of most unexpected. He was unable to get anything going and shot himself completely out of the tournament. Him finishing in 13th was an unspeakable result considering he was in the last group with eventual champion Xander Schauffele. The $159,000 payout is just a fraction of what he should have earned given where he was positioned late in the weekend.

Keegan Bradley

The run for Keegan Bradley has been impressive in 2022, and coming off the U.S. Open, expectations were high at the Travelers. Bradley always leans on a strong tee-to-green game, and he once again found the weekend and cashed a check. He wasn’t able to truly get in the mix but did bank $106,000 for his 19th-place finish. There aren’t many great spots left in the season to use Bradley, so he may not be a One and Done pick at all this season if he hasn’t been used already.

Denny McCarthy

This was the hot name coming into Travelers, as Denny McCarthy was on a fantastic run of form at the Memorial and the U.S. Open. He is the best putter in the world, and his ball striking has improved to give him a more stable tee-to-green game. The big question was whether there would be a regression or a letdown after the big stretch of form, and unfortunately for McCarthy backers, that answer was yes. He was unable to find the weekend despite gaining four strokes putting, and it resulted in a $0 week for One and Done backers.

Patrick Rodgers

This field is incredibly weak, so most of the players should be available in One and Done leagues. Patrick Rodgers is in contention at a tournament like this and sits around 33-1 in the outright market. He has made six of seven cuts, has a runner-up finish at this event and is riding a red-hot putter heading into the John Deere. He has the ability to go low, which is needed here, and he checks most of the boxes for a One and Done candidate this week.

Sahith Theegala

The talent is clearly there with Sahith Theegala, and he nearly broke through last week at the Travelers. Leading by a single stroke on the last hole, he unfortunately made a bad decision and was unable to get out of a bunker and avoid the blowup. It’s a tough way to end what was an impressive showing, but there’s little doubt he will have more chances to win on tour. Heading into a field of this caliber, off a week of gaining 10.2 strokes tee to green, Theegala is primed to continue this run of form.

J.T. Poston

J.T. Poston was another player who found himself in the hunt last week. He brought a lethal combination of approach and putting, which when dialed in makes him a perpetual threat to win tournaments. Poston normally leans on the short game, but the positive strokes on approach in four of five tournaments points to another solid showing here. He’s had little to no success at this course in his career, so it will be interesting to see if the recent form overtakes the course history. This course should provide him with chances to be in contention, so the lack of success here is not a concern.

John Deere Classic 2022 One and Done Pick: Patrick Rodgers

It’s a completely wide-open event and a chance to move up the leaderboard. Rodgers is playing consistent golf and has been finding the weekend in tournaments much stronger than this. A 19th up in Canada, followed by a respectable 31st at the U.S. Open, provides confidence his game is where it needs to be heading into the John Deere. If he can lean on the putter and maintain this run with his irons, there is no reason this can’t be the week he finally hoists a trophy on the PGA Tour.
