U.S. Open 2022 PGA One and Done Picks

It is U.S. Open time, which means temporarily all the world’s best players will be focused on the third major of the season. The PGA Tour heads to Brookline, Mass., for what should be one of the toughest tests of the golf season. U.S. Opens always bring brutal conditions, roughs and an incredibly difficult cut to make. This is a big week for One and Done, as there is plenty of money up for grabs as well as a chance to jump up the leaderboard with the right selection. Let’s get to the best U.S. Open One and Done picks and where to go with golf predictions this week.

PGA One and Done Picks: U.S. Open 2022

RBC Canadian Open 2022 One and Done Recap

Matthew Fitzpatrick

Matthew Fitzpatrick had the bounce-back performance he was looking for last week. After surging to the lead early in the tournament, Fitzpatrick was unable to get into the mix but still finished in a tie for 10th place. The $219,000 payout is a respectable showing for a player who certainly is going to be on people’s minds this week at the U.S. Open.

Harold Varner III

Harold Varner III was similar to Fitzpatrick in that he was around the top of the board without truly threatening. He has proven he can get in the mix on the PGA Tour, and it’s just a matter of time before he breaks through. The 13th-place finish netted any backers $160,000 in One and Done earnings, and not using a top-end player was another benefit to this selection. Varner is unlikely to be a popular choice at the U.S. Open, but he does come in playing quality golf.

Corey Conners

This was this article’s selection last week, backing the hometown guy to win his own Open. Corey Conners’ irons, which are the strength of his game, are back to being dialed in, and that is key as he heads to the U.S. Open. The result last week was a sixth-place finish and a $315,000 payday for One and Done owners. His around-the-green game will always be the big issue, and that could be tested severely as he heads to The Country Club this week.

The U.S. Open 2022 PGA One and Done Picks

Matthew Fitzpatrick

Most people do not have Fitzpatrick left, but this is a logical spot to use him if available. He was the winner of the U.S. Amateur at this course, and he comes in playing fantastic golf. Outside of the Memorial, where he had his career-worst putting performance on tour, Fitzpatrick is putting on a clinic of ball striking and converting on the greens. He hasn’t won on the PGA Tour, but given his abilities on difficult layouts, this is a name that will be mentioned a lot of this week.

Sungjae Im

Sungjae Im is another player who has been consistent in 2022, and he would love to add a major win to the resume. He didn’t have that chance last time at the PGA Championship due to COVID issues, but Im heads here with his game in fantastic shape. He comes in off a 21st at the Heritage, a 15th at Charles Schwab and a 10th-place finish at the Memorial. In all three, he gained at least seven strokes tee to green and was positive off the tee as well as with his irons. He will need that type of well-rounded ball striking here, and Im can be a serious factor in this major.

Patrick Cantlay

One of the nice things about majors is it is possible to target elite players in One and Done who may not be popular selections. That probably is the case for Patrick Cantlay, who isn’t on people’s minds despite being one of the top-end players on the PGA Tour. The reason is pretty simple, as Cantlay hasn’t shown up in the biggest tournaments this season. He missed the cut at the Players, was 39th at the Masters and was beaten by several PGA Professionals en route to a horrendous missed cut at the PGA Championship. Outside of that, everything is fantastic, with a second-place finish at RBC Heritage and a third-place finish last time out at the Memorial where he gained across the board. The major woes will subside, and this is a great buy-low spot on a mega talent like Cantlay.

U.S. Open 2022 One and Done Pick: Patrick Cantlay

A lot of this is going to depend on who is available since many of these players were in prime spots earlier this season. Cantlay is still available in some of our One and Done pools, and despite his struggles in majors, he is still a perfect 6-for-6 in finding the weekend at U.S. Opens, which is an incredibly difficult cut to make. His next step has to be getting into contention in these events, as he is too good to simply find the weekend. The ball-striking numbers are still strong, and Cantlay has only lost strokes putting once in 2022. The bar is low, but this should be Cantlay’s best result in a major this season and he makes for a sneaky One and Done pick.
