How To Claim Your Vermont Fantasy Sports & Sportsbook Bonus

See below for details on how to claim your Vermont fantasy sports and/or sports betting bonus.

Vermont Fantasy Sports & Sports Betting Overview

With more and more states getting into the action with sports betting, people in Vermont may be wondering “How do I get in on this sports betting action?” The long wait is finally over, with Vermont sports betting being signed into law in June of 2023 and ready to launch in early 2024. Check out below to find out more information about how to online sports bet in Vermont, with promos and free bet offers.

1) Is Vermont Sports Betting Legal?

Yes. Sports betting was signed into law in June of 2023 and is set to launch on Jan. 11, 2024. Preregistration for some sportsbooks like DraftKings and FanDuel is live from now through Jan. 10.

2) Is Online Vermont Sports Betting Legal?

Yes. When Vermont sports betting passed through legislation and was made legal, online sports betting was the subject of the bill. Thus, online sports betting will be legal in Vermont on Jan. 11, 2024.

3) What Promo Codes/Deposit Bonuses Are Available for Me and How Can I Use Them?

For the time being, there are only two preregistration promo codes awaiting Vermont sports bettors.

DraftKings

Sign up today and score $200 in Bonus Bets when DraftKings goes live!

From now through Jan. 10, DraftKings is offering $200 in Bonus Bets to Vermont residents who sign up ahead of launch. New DraftKings customers will receive this $200 bonus in the form of eight $25 Bonus Bets on the Jan. 11 launch date.

FanDuel

Get up to $300 in Bonus bets!

Vermont residents who sign up with FanDuel between Dec. 12 and Jan. 11 will receive $100 in Bonus Bets, which will be added to their account when sports betting launches in the state. Plus, they will receive $200 in Bonus Bets once they make their first deposit of at least $5. All told, that is $300 in bonuses for new FanDuel sports bettors in Vermont.

4) What Sportsbooks and Online Sports Betting Apps Are Available in Vermont?

For now, we know of only three sportsbooks that will be active in Vermont once sports betting goes live. Originally it looked like more would join these three, but Vermont's Department of Liquor and Lottery denied applications from BetMGM and ESPNBet. The three operators that were approved are:

  • DraftKings
  • Fanatics
  • FanDuel

These sportsbooks will be required to pay at least 20% of their revenue to the state of Vermont, and the department also requires a $550,000 "pay-to-play" fee from them. With all three agreeing to pay more than 20%, the estimation is that sports betting in the state will provide $7 million in revenue to Vermont.

The reason for BetMGM denial was their offering of a revenue-sharing proposal that did not fit with Vermont's vision for sports betting in the state. Meanwhile, Penn Sports Interactive, which runs ESPNBet, failed to produce some crucial documents that may have allowed them to be approved.

5) Can I Bet on Sports in Person in Vermont?

No. At this time sports betting will only be available online in Vermont.

6) What are the Most Common Types of Sports Bets Can I Make in Vermont?

Spread Bet

Spread bets are bets where you pick a side of a game but the two sides are given even chances of winning by forcing one team to win by a certain number of points. For example, here are lines for a game between the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Boston Celtics -1.5 (-110), moneyline -122

at Los Angeles Lakers +1.5 (-110), moneyline +100

The Celtics are favored by 1.5 points in this example. This means that if you bet the Lakers, you are getting 1.5 points, so if the Lakers win the game or lose by 1 point, you will win the bet because of your 1.5-point cushion. On the other side, when you are laying 1.5 points as the favorite, you need the Celtics to win by 2 or more to win the bet.

Final Score: Celtics 102. Lakers 101. Lakers cover even though the Celtics won the game because the +1.5 point spread is enough to cover a 1-point defeat.

Moneyline Bet

The moneyline is a bet where there is no spread; you are just picking the winner of the game. In the example above, the Lakers moneyline is +100, which means that for every $100 wagered, you win $100 if the Lakers win the game outright. They receive the plus side of the moneyline since they are the underdog, and picking them rewards you with nice odds since they are projected to likely lose the game. On the flip side, if you bet the Celtics moneyline at -122, you have to bet $122 to win $100. They are the favorites, so if you decide to bet the moneyline instead of the point spread, you are forced to bet additional money to win $100.

In the example above, the Celtics moneyline would be the winner, as they won the game outright. The spread is irrelevant for a moneyline wager.

Over/Under

This is a bet wagering on how many total combined points will be scored in a game. For example, the Celtics-Lakers game has an over/under of 220.5 points, which means that the oddsmakers are projecting a combined points total of 220.5 between the two teams. If you think the teams are going to score more than 220.5 points total, you bet the over, and conversely, if you think it’s going to be a defensive struggle, you can bet the under hoping that the total points scored equals 220 points or less.

The final score being 102-101 means the total is 203, so the under is the winner.

Parlay

A parlay is a bet where you combine multiple bets into one bet, and you get increased odds since it is harder to win. If you do a three-team parlay, you select three different teams from three different games, and if you win all three of the bets, you hit your parlay for longshot odds (6-1, so $100 to win $600). Going 0-for-3, 1-for-3 or 2-for 3 is all the same, and you lose the parlay bet. It’s all or nothing, which makes them tough to hit.

7) What are the Most Popular Sports Teams/Players to Bet on in Vermont?

Vermont does not have any professional sports teams or even major college teams. That said, since it is a New England state, Boston and Boston-area sports teams are often the most popular in Vermont. That means the Celtics, Red Sox, Bruins and Patriots earn a lot of the fandom of the Big 4 teams.

However, Vermont borders New York to the east, and southern Vermont is about a four-hour drive from New York City. Therefore, there are plenty of fans of New York teams like the Mets and Rangers in Vermont, and the Buffalo Bills have some fandom as well. On top of that, the largest city in Vermont, Burlington, is a mere hour and 45 minutes across the border from Montreal and around four hours from Ottawa, so there are a number of fans of the Canadiens and Senators in the state.

The most agreed-upon fandom belongs to the Vermont Catamounts NCAA teams. While not powerhouses in any sport, the Catamounts men's hockey and men's and women's basketball teams have a number of NCAA tournaments recently. And those tournament runs will be vital for Vermont sports bettors, as betting on college sports in the state will not be legal unless involving out-of-state tournaments like the Frozen Four and March Madness.

8) Is There Anything Else to Know About VT Sports Betting?

Now that you know Vermont sports betting is legal and set to be live, and you know where you can go to place bets, all that's left to do is get started! If you are looking for more information about sports betting overall, you can use the sports betting resources we provide here at Stokastic.

Vermont Sports Betting & Fantasy Sports FAQ

How will sports betting work in Vermont?

State regulators have issued operating licenses to three sportsbooks. DraftKings and FanDuel have preregistration Bonus Bet offers for Vermont residents who sign up prior to Jan. 11, 2024, and if activated, those bonuses will appear in accounts once sports betting goes live in the state.

After Jan. 11, users will be able to place wagers online through DraftKings, FanDuel and Fanatics. There are not any licensed in-person operators at this time.

Is FanDuel legal in Vermont?

Yes. Sports betting in Vermont was signed into law in June of 2023 and will go live on Jan. 11, 2024. FanDuel will begin operating in the state on the same day, but in the meantime they have preregistration offers for Vermont residents who sign up before the launch date.

Is DraftKings legal in Vermont?

Yes. DraftKings is following the pattern of FanDuel and will also go live on Jan. 11. They too have preregistration offers live as of Dec. 12.

Is horse betting legal in Vermont?

At this time, horse racing is not included in the Vermont legalization bill. However, the commissioner of Vermont's Department of Liquor and Lottery said that this "could change at a later time."

Can I bet in another state with DraftKings?

If you are a Vermont resident and wish to bet with DraftKings in another state, there is no law against doing so provided you are within that other state's borders. However, it is illegal to be in Vermont and bet in another legal state.

Can I use FanDuel in a different state?

The same laws as described above apply to FanDuel as well.
