Blackhawks Forward Andrew Shaw Announces His Retirement

Chicago Blackhawks veteran forward Andrew Shaw announced his retirement on Monday morning. Doctors reportedly highly recommend that shaw hang up the skates due to suffering multiple concussions. Shaw entered this season feeling optimistic, however, he suffered another concussion back in February.

“I know I only played 14 games [this season], but to work your way back, when people are telling you that you should be done, and people are doubting you could make it back, it was worth it,” Shaw said. “I took my time, I made sure I was feeling 100%. And then to score a few goals at the UC [United Center] again, it was worth it. I wouldn’t change it at all.”

Recently, doctors told Shaw it was in his long-term best interest not to try another comeback. Shaw admitted that he struggled with the decision, but came to the realization that it was in the best interest for him to listen to his doctors. See a snippet from Andrew Shaw’s retirement letter below.

“There comes a time when every athlete needs to realize when their health is a priority and a future with their family is what is most important. That point for me is now,” Shaw said. “After several concussions, doctors have strongly recommended I stop playing the game that I love. For once in my life, I am going to listen.”

Shaw admitted to going through a “vicious cycle” of suffering concussion after concussion and continually trying to make a comeback. As hard as it was for him to walk away from the game he loved, he felt that the time was right.

Andrew Shaw ended his retirement letter by saying “Thank you (Chicago) for giving a Mutt a home.”
