UCL DFS Picks: Captain

Mason Mount (DraftKings: $15,300, FanDuel: $12)

Toni Kroos (DraftKings: $13,500, FanDuel: $10)

The second leg of this Champions League semifinal is knotted up. Chelsea holds the advantage with an away goal from the first leg, which sees them advancing without goals in this upcoming fixtures. Real Madrid needs a goal, but do not expect them to abandon their style of play and get caught in the counter. Both teams have world-class defenses and are top 10 in expected goals, with Chelsea holding the advantage at 0.36 per match, trailing only Manchester City. The key difference is the likely return of Sergio Ramos to the Madrid backline.

Mason Mount holds set-piece monopoly for the host club. He leads the spread scoring club in goals and is tied for second in assists. He averages 2.44 shots per match, trailing only Timo Werner, and builds his floor by way of 5.84 crosses per match. Mount is a cash play at captain and will garner plenty of ownership in GPP.

Toni Kroos handles set shares for Madrid. His upside is limited, but his floor is consistent. In an expected low-scoring affair, his salary relief provides flexibility to target a spread of goal-hunting options in the Flex. Kroos averages 6.57 crosses per match and leads the visitors with 4.49 scoring chances created. If Ramos is starting, Kroos has a boost in assist upside and assisted-shots metrics on the corner sets.

Karim Benzema (DraftKings: $13,200, FanDuel: $10)

Karim Benzema leads his club in overall shot volume, at 3.89 per match and hits the target at a 42% accuracy clip. He also sits atop Madrid’s goal-scoring list and contributes on 52% of its overall scoring. The asking price is steep with Ramos returning. If Ramos does not return, Benzema will have penalty sets, which could end up being one of the lone goals seen in this match.

UCL DFS Picks: Flex

Christian Pulisic (DraftKings: $10,400, FanDuel: $13)

Kai Havertz (DraftKings: $7,400, FanDuel: $11)

The Chelsea scoring is spread out, so the asking price on Christian Pulisic fits more in the Flex spot. He needs a goal to pay off the ask. He averages 2.29 shots per match and hits the target at a 38% accuracy clip. His metrics are supported by 3.59 scoring chances created per match and a club-leading 1.50 drawn fouls per match.

Kai Havertz has been on a scoring spree, and while a brace is a tough ask, he certainly has the volume to find the back of the net. He leads the club with 53% on-target accuracy and sees a boost to 3.16 shots per match as a starter with Thomas Tuchel as manager. If Werner starts ahead of Havertz, he is tough to get to given the increased ask and high ownership he draws both in cash and GPPs.

Ben Chilwell (DraftKings: $8,000, FanDuel: $9)

Sergio Ramos (DraftKings: $4,400, FanDuel: $10)

Ben Chilwell was disappointing in the first leg, but he is a strong floor play with his offensive activity on the wing. He leads Chelsea in open-play crossing volume at 3.75 per match and 4.91 crosses overall. Chilwell adds value with 2.10 scoring chances created and 2.95 won tackles/interceptions per match. If Reece James gets the start on the opposite wing, he mirrors Chilwell’s crossing volume and has a slight edge with 4.20 won tackles/interceptions per match. Both wingbacks are a solid pairing in a Chelsea-favored stack.

Sergio Ramos is a punt defender play. His asking price matches the inconsistency of his DFS output. He looks to attack all aerial deliveries and handles the penalties for his club. He averages a shot and 2.50 won tackles/interceptions per match. On FanDuel, Ramos is an interesting play when adding the club-leading 3.30 clears per match against an opponent that looks to control time of possession.

Other Options: Vinicius Junior (DraftKings $6,600, FanDuel $13), Jorginho (DraftKings $5,800, FanDuel $7), Thibaut Courtois (DraftKings $5,600), Edouard Mendy  (DraftKings $7,000)
