French Open DraftKings Tennis DFS picks for Friday June 4 with Serena Williams based on expert tennis projections, ownership and rankings using simulations and models

Welcome back, tennis fans! The long two-month offseason is over and tennis DFS has finally arrived. We’re going to dive straight into day two and we have a ton of top talent to break down. The second slate of this tennis DFS week has 15 matches with WTA players in action. We have thoughts on Serena Williams and Julia Goerges, so let’s dive in.

Serena Williams (DraftKings $9,900; FanDuel N/A)

Outside of grand slam finals matches, it’s almost impossible to bet against Serena Williams. Williams was 25-6 last year while failing to capture a title, which I’m sure will motivate her from the get-go. Williams has by far the most power behind her shots compared to the rest of the WTA tour, firing down aces at a 12% rate in 2019. The ace bonus and the fact that she breaks her opponent’s serve 45% of the time makes her a lock in almost any format. The only way to beat her is to get her on the move but that’s easier said than done.

Williams will go up against Camila Giorgi, the WTA No. 100 from Italy. The former top-30 player did not have a stellar season in 2019 with a 13-17 record. Giorgi has been playing some solid tennis this week in her qualifying matches, but her serve has been poor to say the least. She served up 16 double faults in her last match against Ysaline Bonaventure, which is somewhat normal for Giorgi. Williams has the 3-0 head-to-head edge in this matchup and I wouldn’t be surprised to see another blowout.

Julia Goerges (DraftKings $8,200; FanDuel N/A)

Goerges had a somewhat inconsistent 2019 season with a 15-12 record on the hard courts. She showed some positive signs at the end of the year, however, reaching the finals in Luxembourg to end off the season. Similar to Williams, Goerges has a massive first serve that connected on aces 9.5% of the time last season. She’s a bit underpriced for tennis DFS today due to the recent quality of play from her opponent, but I think Georges will be too much to handle.

Goerges has a meeting with Greet Minnen, the WTA No. 110 from Belgium. Minnen has played some lights out tennis in the last month with a 9-2 record. However, the quality of her opponent’s hasn’t been the greatest. She’s faced only one played ranked inside the top 100, which ended in a three-set loss against Aliaksandra Sasnovich. Minnen’s strongest weapon during this run has been on the return end, converting on 18 break points in her last three matches. While I think Minnen is going to be a top player soon, Goerges might be too tall of a task today.

Amanda Anisimova (DraftKings $7,700; FanDuel N/A)

Amanda Anisimova has absolutely skyrocketed up the WTA rankings. The 18-year-old American started the 2019 season as the world number 89 and now she’s a top-25 player. She reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open and the semifinals of the French Open. I think Anisimova is in for a breakout season where she cracks the top 10 and that might be in 2020. Anisimova doesn’t have the strongest serve on the tour but her return game is extraordinary. She had a total of 70 break chances in her last five matches of 2019 and I hope we see that level of play going into this year.

Amanda will face off against Kateryna Kozlova, the world No. 91. Kozlova is one of the games top clay court players but the same can’t be said on the hard surfaces. She was just 23-25 on the hard courts in 2019 while posting a 2-6 against top-50 players. Similar to Anisimova, she doesn’t have a great service game but she also lacks the power that Anisimova brings to the court. This will be their first head-to-head meeting and I’m rolling with the American to pull it out at a cheap price.

Possible upset/value Tennis DFS plays: Anna Blinkova (DraftKings $6,000; FanDuel N/A)

This might seem like a long shot, but I think Anna Blinkova has a chance to pull off the upset. Blinkova had an outstanding 2019 season with a 38-21 record on the hard courts. While she was just 1-4 against top-20 opponents, every one of her losses was in a three-set match. The Russian captured a title in New Haven while reaching the semis in both Luxembourg and Guangzhou. I doubt she’ll be a popular play tonight but Blinkova has the weapons to make it an interesting match.

Blinkova is up against the top seed, Belinda Bencic. Currently sitting at the world No. 8 spot, Bencic was one of the top players last season. She was 33-14 on the hard courts while taking down the title in both Dubai and Moscow. Bencic was a top-10 player killer in 2019 with a 9-6 record against the best players in the game. Everything points to Bencic winning this match but I wouldn’t be shocked to see an early season upset. She hasn’t played since October and Blinkova is coming in hot.
