The best framing in the video comes right at the start: reading ownership is like a player watching film of the other team before a game. Projected ownership is a forecast of the percentage of tournament entries that will roster each player, which means it is really a forecast of your opponents' behavior. Before ownership projections existed you had to eyeball where the crowd would land. A Worked Example: Why A 3% Stack Can Be The Best Play On The Board

On a nine-game slate, the broadcast's favorite stack was the Astros: cheap across the board outside of Alex Bregman and Michael Brantley, at home against Kyle Hendricks, a pitcher who had struggled on the road that season, with an implied run total in the upper fives. But when he generated a pool of lineups optimized purely for projected points, Houston showed up in only about 3% of them. The optimizer math said other teams projected higher. That gap is the entire opportunity: a stack with a legitimate scoring case that the projection-chasing field would mostly skip. If everyone else is optimizing for the highest projection and you see an edge the optimizer underweights, you are competing with far fewer entries for the top spot that pays the big money.
The cheap Houston bats did something else too: they freed up salary for two expensive aces he wanted, including the highest-projected player on the slate at nearly $12,000. The recurring MLB pattern is right there: a low-owned, low-priced stack is not just differentiation, it is the financing for the rest of your roster. This is contrarian strategy done properly: contrarian because the field is elsewhere, not because the team is bad.
The obvious question is how far you can chase that uniqueness before the lineup stops being able to win. He answered it with two benchmark numbers.
The Two Benchmarks: Max Projection And Max Ownership
Before judging any build, he set two reference points from the initial pool: the highest projected lineup total on the slate, 134 that night, and the highest cumulative ownership, 160 (the sum of every roster spot's ownership percentage). Every lineup after that got measured against both ends.

The row that matters is the last one. The chosen build gave up about 10 projected points against the ceiling and cut cumulative ownership from 160 to 70. The trade you are hunting looks exactly like that: a small, recoverable projection discount bought at a massive ownership discount.
The 10-15 point window is the rule to internalize. Fall 20-25 points below the slate's max projection and it becomes nearly impossible to make up the difference; your lineup no longer has the potential to reach the top even when your reads are right. Uniqueness is only valuable on a roster that can still get there. Staying in that window does not mean avoiding popular players altogether. The broadcast was emphatic on this point.
Chalk Plus Contrarian Is A Recipe, Not A Contradiction
The recipe the broadcast kept circling had two halves: a healthy share of popular pieces, and a low-owned contrarian core beside them. On one build that meant about half the roster sitting in the 20-28% ownership range; on an Astros build the separator was Michael Brantley at 1% owned, one of the strongest bats on the team that night. The read is the same either way: if the chalk goes off and your contrarian piece goes off, that is the recipe. The popular pieces keep pace with the field; the 1% bat is the separator. If Brantley has a huge day, that lineup rockets to the top of the standings while the chalk-only entries all rise together and cancel each other out.
That cancelling effect is why pure chalk almost never pays off in big fields, and the video's Derek Dietrich story is the perfect illustration. Dietrich hit three home runs one night, the best play of the slate, and 106 lineups in that contest still had him. Scale that concentration to the biggest tournaments and you are sharing the haymaker with something like 20,000 entries. Nailing the best player of the night moved nobody, because everybody nailed him. You do not separate from the field on players the field also has; you separate on the 1% bat standing next to them. That is the same math behind stacking a low-owned team against the field's favorite: correlation gives the group a shared ceiling, and ownership decides who profits from it.

Value Plays And The Bottom-of-the-Order Bias
The broadcast flagged a bias worth exploiting: people are reluctant to roster hitters in the seven, eight or nine hole because they gravitate to big names at the top of the order. The night before, the bottom of the Cubs lineup went off — Javier Baez with two home runs, Addison Russell and Jason Heyward one each, all low-priced. A cheap bottom-of-the-order bat on a live offense carries real upside precisely because nobody wants to click it; the video's example was Jack Mayfield, near the slate minimum at $2,200, forced into the lineup by injuries. A punt like that rarely wins you the tournament by himself. What he does is make the roster work, fitting the expensive core you actually want. The ceiling play is a different archetype: a bat around 1% owned who runs into a couple of home runs while his team keeps the line moving, earning everyone extra at-bats, is the recipe that takes down a GPP. And the field's blind spot runs deep — the example board that night had a catcher batting eighth at just 0.1% projected ownership.
The same lens applies to skills the projections undervalue. They liked a Royals stack partly because Adalberto Mondesi and Nicky Lopez added stolen-base upside: a steal puts a runner in scoring position for Jorge Soler behind them, creating run and RBI paths a raw points projection misses. The Brantley separator was 1% owned; the ace they paired with those cheap Houston bats was 22% owned, and the broadcast called that perfectly acceptable. For an ace in a favorable home matchup, 22% is a sweet spot; 35-40% is where pitcher ownership actually gets heavy. Pitchers concentrate more than hitters because there are only two or three obvious aces on most slates, so calibrate the two positions differently: a 22% pitcher is normal exposure, while a 22%-owned hitter is heavy chalk.
The pairing also creates a structural tension the video demonstrates well. A nearly $12,000 ace forces value bats into the rest of the build, which is precisely why the cheap contrarian stack and the expensive ace fit together — each one makes the other affordable. The Trimming Routine: 180 Lineups Down To The Sweet Spot

- Set your benchmarks. Generate an unconstrained lineup pool and record the slate's max projection and max cumulative ownership (his 134 and 160).
- Generate a big pool around your angle. He built about 180 lineups around Houston stacks. Volume matters; you are creating a distribution to select from, not hand-crafting one perfect roster.
- Delete the low-projection tail. Sort by projection and cut the bottom quarter or so (40-50 of 180). These violate the 10-15 point rule and cannot win.
- Delete the high-ownership tail. Re-sort by cumulative ownership and cut the highest-owned builds; in his Houston pool that tail topped out around 125, matching the most concentrated lineups any of his pools had produced. Those are the field's lineups, and you gain nothing by duplicating them.

What is a good cumulative ownership for an MLB GPP lineup? There is no universal number; it moves with slate size and field. The method is relative: find the slate's max-chalk benchmark (160 that night) and select builds that land far below it while staying within 10-15 points of the max projection, like the 123/70 build from the video.
