Freeman's mid-slate process starts with a simple anchor: find the best lineup on the leaderboard with zero player minutes remaining. That score is locked. Nothing can change it, which makes it a hard floor for what first place will require. From there he projects what the winning score will actually become, then walks each of his live lineups backward: how many points does this lineup need from its remaining players, and how much leverage does it need to get there?
The leverage half of that question is where his thinking gets sharp. A player at 15% to 20% ownership feels like chalk under a countdown clock, but Freeman flips it: that still means 85% of the field doesn't have him. Is that enough separation to climb from where this lineup sits? Sometimes mediocre chalk is plenty. Sometimes a lineup buried on the leaderboard needs a piece so thin the field won't even consider it.
He told a story from a 2022 spring-league slate that shows the principle with the results stripped away. He swapped off a chalky piece onto a receiver at 0.2% ownership, a player he knew would be one of only five active receivers on his team that day. The two players scored nearly the same, and the swap probably cost him three or four points across the board. He still called it absolutely the right decision, and he's correct: a near-identical projection at a fraction of the ownership is exactly the trade the middle tier exists to make. Process over results is easy to say and hard to live when the points come in flat. The same math, with the results finally attached, is what produced the $100K run.
The $100K Decision: Kamara Off, Kelce In
Back to the playoff slate. Two games done, two to go, and Freeman's climbing lineups faced the decision that would define the sweat. He swapped off Alvin Kamara and onto Travis Kelce, which turned the lineup into a Patrick Mahomes, Darrel Williams, Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce core and left enough salary to consider adding Byron Pringle over the Cameron Brate piece already in the build.
That Pringle-or-Brate call is a beautiful little late-swap exam. Whatever the exact reasoning, staying put paid off, and this story ends with margins thin enough that it mattered.
That Brate lineup climbed all the way to 3rd in the Milly Maker, a tournament Freeman estimated at a couple hundred thousand entries. The final margins were brutal: he finished four hundredths of a fantasy point behind second, and 3.6 points behind first and the million. One more Leonard Fournette rushing yard would have meant second place outright. And the cruelest what-if of all was already on the field: Mahomes, carrying a questionable tag, left the game injured in the second half with 21.6 fantasy points banked while Chad Henne finished the drive work. Hill scored 22.9. Darrel Williams, at just 2% ownership, added 13.4. A healthy Mahomes probably wins Freeman the milly. Instead he "settled" for $100K, watching the final minutes on a group video call with friends he had cut into the entry, everyone trying not to spoil the feed for whoever's TV ran a few seconds behind.
