Falcons Starting Quarterback: DraftKings Won't Pick. Kalshi Already Has.

Kalshi's market on who starts at quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons in Week 1 of the NFL season settles on one document: each contract resolves YES for the quarterback officially designated Atlanta's Week 1 starter, with the designation taken from the official depth chart, or from official team communications if no chart is published. The opener is September 13 at Pittsburgh. As of Thursday morning, that market has Tua Tagovailoa at 67 cents bid, 68 ask, and Michael Penix Jr. at 32 and 33. Atlanta has not named one. ESPN reported Wednesday that the Falcons still have not announced a starter, that general manager Ian Cunningham called it a group decision with head coach Kevin Stefanski, president of football Matt Ryan and owner Arthur Blank, and that Penix has three practices of 11-on-11 work behind him since his ACL clearance. DraftKings, which had to post a salary for both on the Week 1 Sunday main slate, priced them identically at $4,800 and hung a questionable tag on Penix. So the exchange has a two-to-one lean, the salary ladder has a tie, and the team has an "or." The full board walks the month of flips and the trade tape. This page is the DFS reading of the same market: the value of the name is not at quarterback at all. The Falcons player this market actually reprices is further down, and he costs less than either passer.

Prices are resting bid and ask from Kalshi's live order book as of September 3, 2026, 11:29 UTC. DraftKings salaries and statuses are from the Week 1 Sunday main slate (12 games, September 13), where Falcons at Steelers kicks off at 1 p.m. Eastern.

The row that changed is Tagovailoa's, and it changed on Tuesday. His contract first traded September 1 at 54 cents and finished the day at 65, with a high print of 68, on the busiest day of trading the contract has had in the past week. Penix went the other way, 47 down to 38 across the same day. Wednesday added the exclamation point: at 8:37 p.m. Eastern a single 12,009-contract print went through on Penix at 38 cents with the taker on the "no" side, and by Thursday morning Penix's quote sat at 32 and 33. Nothing in the fetched public record explains either day. ESPN's Wednesday story had the team undecided, and the last report with a timeline attached, Adam Schefter on August 31, said the Falcons would evaluate Penix's knee through this practice week before choosing. Read the move as position, not news.

The tail agrees: Cooper Rush, the hedge the long board saw filling at 9 cents a week ago, has unwound to a 0-cent bid in the same week Tagovailoa rallied.

What A Coin Flip Does To A $4,800 Quarterback

DraftKings priced the competition as a tie. Tagovailoa and Penix both cost $4,800, which is $500 less than Aaron Rodgers on the other sideline at $5,300 and $800 above the $4,000 quarterback minimum where Strand and Rush sit. The game markets agree. Kalshi has Pittsburgh at 61 cents bid, 62 ask to win, the Steelers by more than 3.5 points at 47 and 49, and the total right around 42 (over 41.5 at 50 and 51, over 42.5 at 48 and 50). A field-goal underdog in a low-40s game is not where a tournament quarterback comes from, whichever name Atlanta prints, and a $4,800 passer who, if the name is Penix, still carries a questionable tag is not a cash-game play.

The quarterback market is really about the pass-catchers, because the two men throw the ball differently and the salaries behind them were set before anyone knew which one would. In the preseason finale, Tagovailoa's first quarter in Miami, 7-of-8 for 95 yards, went almost entirely to Kyle Pitts and Jahan Dotson on quick, short throws. That is a Tagovailoa script, and on this slate Pitts costs $4,700 and Dotson $3,700. Drake London, at $6,500, is the Falcons receiver whose price assumes downfield volume, the Penix script.

The Decision Rule

The one I keep coming back to is Pitts. The market's 67-cent lean is toward the quarterback whose last live tape was a short-area quarter, and the pass-catcher who profits from that script is the fifth-priced tight end on the slate at $4,700, $2,200 under Brock Bowers and $100 above Dalton Kincaid, a salary set against an "or." If Tagovailoa starts, the quick game that fed Pitts in Miami is the base offense, and the ladder never got to price that. The read starts from the market, because the official depth chart is the one document nobody has.

That document is also the callback this whole page runs on. Kalshi's written rule closes the market early once Atlanta's official Week 1 depth chart is released (the listed close is otherwise September 15); a press-conference name settles the question in practice (Cleveland named Deshaun Watson on August 24 and his contract still trades, at 98 and 99 bid and ask this morning) but only the chart ends the trade. One more clause matters to a DFS reader: a quarterback who is injured but still officially listed as the starter resolves YES, so a Penix YES is a listing, not a snap. The window is short: Pro Football Rumors reported August 29 that Stefanski was expected to name the starter by the end of this week, around September 4, so the winner gets a full week of first-team reps, though ESPN's Wednesday story carried no date. The Bottom Line

The Falcons starting quarterback market is a coin flip the exchange has stopped treating as one, at 67 cents on Tagovailoa, while the team is still saying "or" and DraftKings is still saying $4,800 twice. The DFS value of that lean is at tight end, where Pitts at $4,700 was priced for a tie and the market is pricing a short-throw starter two-to-one. The day Atlanta prints Tagovailoa's name, Pitts stops being a tie artifact and becomes an ownership problem: he is leverage only if the field is still building him like a fifth-priced tight end rather than a first-read target, and my expectation is that the field catches up within a day of the announcement, so check the DataHub the moment Week 1 ownership posts. If the name is Penix, the same trigger sends the leverage to London at $6,500. Until the chart drops, the market is the only pricing signal that has leaned.
