DraftKings Showdown Week 1 MNF: Walker Captain Hit 55.65

The Captain call was right, and it was not close. Kansas City beat Denver 31-10 on Monday night, Kenneth Walker III ran for 173 yards and a 60-yard touchdown and caught a 2-yard touchdown, and that is 37.10 DraftKings points in the flex or 55.65 in the Captain slot. This page captained Walker at $15,900 off a 25.7 projected Captain score, so he returned nearly 30 points more than the Sims asked of him, and the next-best Captain on the slate, Patrick Mahomes at 33.99, finished 21.66 behind him. The Bo Nix pivot is the miss: the slate's second-highest projection scored 7.44.

The Captain Verdict
Walker was the optimal Captain in hindsight, outright, with no salary argument against him. The reason this page gave for taking the priciest player on the slate held up exactly as written: the field spent 35.8% of its captain slots on Mahomes and Nix and only 15.3% on Walker, so the one non-quarterback of the top three was both the best score and the least-owned of the three. Mahomes was the second-best Captain and the Sims' top projection at 17.8, and he cleared it at 22.66 on 184 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, an interception and a 15-yard rushing touchdown. A Mahomes Captain was not a losing ticket. It was a ticket 21.66 points behind the one most of the field also did not have.
The gap is what a projection cannot price. Five touchdowns were scored in the game, Walker had two of them, and he cleared 100 rushing yards for the 3-point bonus on top. Mahomes, Evan Engram and Rashee Rice took the other three.
The Pivot Missed And The Fade Was Right
Nix was the pivot on the best captain leverage on the slate, 17.3% of Sims builds against 15.4% captain ownership, and that leverage was real but the score was not. He threw for 131 yards with one touchdown, one interception and a lost fumble: 7.44 points, 11.16 as a Captain, eighth-best captain score among the ten players above. Leverage tells you what the field is underweighting, not what will happen, and on a night when Denver scored 10 points the quarterback pivot was the wrong side of the game script.
The Rice fade was correct. This page called him the Captain to fade on the slate's worst captain leverage, 12.0% of the field against 9.0% of Sims builds, and kept him as a flex piece only. Rice caught a 13-yard touchdown and still finished at 9.90 on two catches for 19 yards, which is 14.85 as a Captain and sixth on the graded board. The touchdown made him look live on the scoring summary and did not make him a Captain.
Dropping Courtland Sutton from the pivot slot back to the flex also held: he caught two passes for 11 yards and scored 3.10 against a 10.2 projection.
What The Projections Got Right And Wrong
Only two of the five highest-projected players finished in the top five of actual points. Mahomes, Nix, Walker, Rice and Waddle were the Sims' top five; Walker and Mahomes cleared, Rice finished sixth, Nix eighth and Jaylen Waddle last of the ten at 1.20 on one catch for two yards. What replaced them at the top were the cheap bodies: Engram at $3,400 more than doubled a 6.2 projection for 14.30, and the Chiefs D/ST at $4,400 turned three sacks, an interception, a fumble recovery and 10 points allowed into 11.00. That is the Showdown pattern in one game: the projections ranked the Captain pool correctly in shape, not in order, and the punt plays paid for the Captain who ran away with it.

The Worked Example, Graded
Six spots, $50,000, at least one player from each team, and the Captain slot costs 1.5 times the flex price for 1.5 times the points. The build this page published was Walker III at Captain ($15,900) with Mahomes ($9,600), Nix ($9,800), Sutton ($8,000), Engram ($3,400) and Pat Bryant ($3,200) for $49,900. It scored 111.35.
The optimal lineup on the slate scored 123.61: the same Walker Captain with Mahomes, Engram, Kelce, Rice and the Chiefs D/ST for $49,700. The published build reached 90% of it, and the whole gap is two flex seats. Nix at 7.44 was worth a Chiefs D/ST at 11.00 for $5,400 less. Sutton at $8,000 got the slot over Travis Kelce at $7,000 on an ownership argument, 30.8% of the field on Kelce against 23.7% on Sutton, and Kelce outscored him 10.10 to 3.10 for less money. The second entry, Nix at Captain, scored 92.22.
