Falcons vs Packers Player Props: The Wrong Team Ran It

Stokastic had the game plan right and the team wrong. The projection said Thursday night would be a running game, and it was: 41 rushing attempts, 242 yards on the ground and 37 minutes of possession. All of it belonged to Atlanta. Green Bay ran the ball nine times in a 35-14 loss, Jordan Love threw 53 passes, and the two Packers backs this page bought at 30 rushing yards finished with 11 and 6. Bijan Robinson, the one Falcons bet, ran 29 times for 194 yards and doubled his line. The board went 1 of 4, and the three misses were the same miss.

The Script Never Showed Up

Green Bay's first drive was the game this page expected. Love hit Christian Watson from 4 yards out, the Packers led 7-0 with 5:13 left in the first quarter, and a five-point home favorite had a lead to protect on the ground. Robinson answered from 3 yards out before the quarter ended, Atlanta scored 10 more in the second, and at 17-7 the Packers stopped handing the ball off. Love finished 28 of 53 for 312 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. The two backs this page bought got eight carries between them.

The Johnson and Lloyd bets were one bet on one script: a home favorite with a patched line shortening the game with the run. That script needed Green Bay to lead, or at least to stay close. Atlanta took the lead in the second quarter and never gave it back, and from there no committee share mattered, because there were no carries to share. Johnson's longest run went 5 yards. Lloyd's went 6. Neither back got within 19 yards of the line.

Johnson: Four Carries

Kaleb Johnson went from the most carries in the backfield in Week 2 to four on Thursday, for 6 yards, plus one catch for 10. The price moved from 58 to 64 cents during the day because the inactives confirmed the committee, and the projection sat at 74% because a home favorite behind a patched line runs. The projection made no room for a Green Bay team trailing by 10 at halftime, and that is the whole miss. When the plan is the bet, the plan losing is the loss, and 64 cents was the most expensive way to lose it on this board.

Lloyd: The Same Bet, Cheaper

Lloyd's 11 yards led the Green Bay backfield, which says everything about the Green Bay backfield. The 42-cent ticket cost less and lost the same way: 30 yards on four carries needs a run this offense never had. The cheaper price is not a defense. The projection was 58% and the game gave the backs no chance to get there, so buying Lloyd at the same size as Johnson doubled the exposure to a single outcome, the Packers falling behind. Next time a projection leans on script, the second back is a smaller ticket or none.

Bijan Doubled The Line

Robinson finished with 29 carries, 194 yards, two touchdowns and a 55-yard run, on a night Atlanta averaged 5.9 yards a carry against a front that came in allowing the third-fewest in the league. The projection was 81.5 yards and a 65% chance, and the Packers' front was the reason it was not higher. It did not matter. Michael Penix Jr. went 18 of 25 for 256 yards in his first start since November, Drake London caught nine passes for 194 yards, and the boxes Robinson ran into were the light ones the page expected with a quarterback the defense had to respect.

This was the one bet on the board that was a bet on a player instead of a script. Robinson gets the ball whether Atlanta is ahead or behind, and he got it 29 times with a lead. The ticket paid at 60 cents.

Kraft: Eight Targets, No Score

Tucker Kraft was targeted eight times, second-most on the team, and caught four for 26 yards. The volume the page expected showed up, because Love threw 53 times. The end zone did not. Green Bay's two touchdowns went to wide receivers, Watson from 4 yards and Matthew Golden from 15, and the tight end never got the short-field throw the ticket was built on. A 34% chance at 30 cents was the right shape of bet, and it lost to a defense that gave up two scores all night.

What The Board Got Right And Wrong

Robinson was right: a projection 11.5 yards past the line, a five-point edge, and a player whose workload does not depend on the score. That is the template.

The two Green Bay bets were wrong for one reason, and it was not the committee. The committee split was the risk the page named; the risk that landed was the one it named and priced too low, Green Bay falling behind and throwing. The projection wanted the Packers to run because they were favored. They were favored for one quarter.

Kraft was a small ticket that lost small. The read on volume held, the read on where the touchdowns go did not.
