Does DraftKings Have A Lineup Optimizer? What's Free Vs What The Sims Add For NFL Week 1

Every September a wave of players comes back to NFL DFS, opens the DraftKings app, and asks the same question before making a deposit: do I need to pay for a tool, or is what DraftKings gives me for free good enough? I build Week 1 lineups every year, and the answer depends on one thing that has nothing to do with software: how many lineups you plan to enter. That answer splits cleanly, and the Week 1 salary board that dropped July 31 already hints at which side of the line you should care about.

The Quick Answer

DraftKings does not have a built-in optimizer: the app gives you salaries, points per game, and an opponent rank on the draft screen, and nothing that builds and ranks a lineup pool for you. Building by hand from that screen is fine for one or two casual lineups. Stokastic is the layer on top: NFL projections, ownership, and stacks in the DataHub, plus Sims that play the slate out tens of thousands of times and rank lineups by how they perform against the field. For tournament and multi-entry play in Week 1, the sim layer is the difference. The side-by-side table, and what the early Week 1 salary board says about the gap, is below.

Half of this comparison is a tool you may never have seen. This walkthrough of the NFL pre-contest Sims comes from a past season, and while the interface has evolved since, the build flow it shows, from loading the slate to picking the lineups you enter, is the same process this article describes. What DraftKings Gives You Out Of The Box

Start with the free side, because people underrate it. The DraftKings draft screen shows every player's salary, their average fantasy points, and an opponent rank that grades how the matchup has treated that position. Injury tags sit right on the player card. You can sort by salary or by average points, and in Classic contests lineups stay editable until each player's game kicks off, so the raw material for a thoughtful hand-build is sitting right there at $0.

What DraftKings does not give you, as of August 2026, is a projection- or ownership-driven optimizer: nothing in the app builds and ranks a lineup pool for you, and the search term "DraftKings optimizer" is quietly misleading on this point, because the optimizers you see advertised for DK are third-party products that export lineups into it. The app also shows you nothing about the future. Average points are last season's results, and in Week 1 the roster that produced them may not exist anymore. There is no projection, no ownership estimate, and no concept of which players' outcomes are correlated. And while DraftKings takes bulk entries in its biggest tournaments (max entries vary by contest, and the largest GPPs have historically allowed 150 per user) and hands you a CSV file to manage them, it gives you nothing to fill that file with. How its scoring reprices players against the other site is a separate free-side wrinkle our DraftKings vs FanDuel NFL DFS breakdown covers. The free tools are a viewing window, not an engine, which is exactly the gap the paid layer exists to close.

What The Stokastic Layer Adds

The Stokastic stack replaces the two things the DK app cannot do: look forward, and build.

The forward look is the NFL DFS projections, ownership and stacks in the DataHub. When the Week 1 board loads in game week, instead of last year's points per game you get that week's projection, a projected ownership number for every player, and the Top Stacks view that shows which offenses are worth pairing. (The NFL page populates from live slates, so it fills as Week 1 arrives; you can try the Sims free in the meantime.) Ownership is the piece the DK app itself simply does not carry, and in tournaments it is the number that matters most, because your score only counts relative to a field that is mostly building off the same public information.

The engine is the NFL Sims. Rather than solving for the highest projected total, the Sims play the slate out tens of thousands of times, against a realistic field and a real payout structure, and rank lineups by how they actually perform in the contest you are entering. Correlation comes along for free: a quarterback's big games land on his receivers, so the sim naturally surfaces the QB stacks that win tournaments instead of nine disconnected salaries. It is the difference between an optimizer and a simulator, and if you want the full mechanics, our sims vs optimizers breakdown goes deep on it. This workflow has also won a Milly Maker outright, a build we will come back to.

Volume is the piece multi-entry players feel first. Upload your contest entry file from DraftKings, favorite the lineups you want, and the Entry Manager assigns them to each contest you entered and exports one CSV you upload straight back. That closes the exact loop the DK app leaves open: it accepts a bulk file of lineups but offers no way to create them.

Why Week 1 Makes The Gap Bigger

Now the part that makes this a Week 1 question and not just a tools question. Week 1 is the most opinion-driven slate of the season. There are no current-season snap counts, no target shares, nothing but last year's box scores, preseason narratives, and a salary board. That is precisely the environment where the DK app's rear-view numbers are at their weakest, and where a field full of players leaning on the same headlines gets most concentrated on the same obvious names.

The 2026 board sharpens the point. DraftKings posted Week 1 pricing on July 31 for the 12-game Sunday main slate on September 13, and we broke down the full board in our Week 1 pricing first look. As of that August 1 snapshot, Jahmyr Gibbs tops everything at $8,000 while the most expensive quarterback, Josh Allen, costs just $7,000, with only $1,000 separating him from the eighth-priced QB. A compressed quarterback board means paying up at QB costs almost nothing, so the field's builds converge at the position, and the real differentiation moves to running back, wide receiver, and how you compose the stack around whichever quarterback you pay for. That is a leverage problem, and leverage is unplayable without an ownership number. The DK app will never show you one. The DataHub and the Sims are built around one.

A Worked Example From The Early Board

Take one build decision from that August 1 board. Joe Burrow at $6,900 with Ja'Marr Chase at $7,800 is the most obvious stack on the slate: the star quarterback, the top-priced receiver, one of the highest-profile offenses in football. On the DK draft screen that pairing looks exactly as good as it is, and that is the problem, because it looks that good to everyone. The same board offers the quieter version of the same bet: Tee Higgins at $6,300 shares that passing game with Chase, a $1,500 gap between two receivers catching balls from the same quarterback, which we flagged in the pricing piece as exactly the kind of spread that makes the cheaper side interesting in tournaments. The draft screen shows you the $1,500. It cannot show you the ownership gap that decides whether Burrow-Higgins is the leverage play or just the discount play; that is the number the sim resolves when the board loads. And the promised Milly Maker receipt shows what those resolutions look like at full scale: Steve Buzzard's winning Conference Championship lineup was the kind of low-duplication build most draft-screen hand-builds miss, two tight ends, his quarterback with one pass catcher plus a three-man bring-back, and a boosted Travis Kelce who ended up his highest scorer at 24.5% ownership. Nobody duplicated it, which is why he held the whole $1 million instead of splitting it. The sim did not avoid stars; it found the version of the slate's upside the field was not standing on.

One caveat we flagged in the pricing piece applies here too: DraftKings can reprice players between now and kickoff weekend, so treat those salaries as the early read, not the final board, and treat player availability the same way. An August name still needs a September health check.

Stokastic Vs DraftKings Tools: Side By Side

The row to sit with is projected ownership. You can close most of the other gaps with sweat: projections exist in a lot of places, and you can hand-build a stack. Ownership is the one input the tournament math requires that no amount of effort inside the DK app produces.

When The DraftKings App Is All You Need

I want to be straight about the other side, because not everyone should buy a subscription in Week 1. If you are entering one or two lineups in small contests with friends, playing mostly for fun, the DK draft screen plus a free projection source is fine. This year's early board is even friendly to it: on the August 1 snapshot, 547 of the 715 priced players cost $4,000 or less, which means a casual build can pay for its one expensive conviction, a Gibbs at $8,000 or a top stack, and fill the rest from a very deep punt bin instead of spreading salary thin across nine medium tags. Add late swap, which is available to everyone, and Sunday-morning inactive news becomes your best free edge. Brand new to DFS? Start with our DFS beginner's guide before you spend a dollar on tools.

The line where free stops being fine is the tournament line. The moment you are entering large-field GPPs, or firing more than a handful of lineups, you are competing on ownership and correlation whether you can see them or not. Playing that game without the numbers is playing it blind, and Week 1, with its inflated entry pools and narrative-driven chalk, is the worst week of the season to be blind in.

The Verdict For Week 1

The comparison is really a division of labor, not a fight. DraftKings is where you play; it was never built to be the tool you research with. So the question "Stokastic vs DraftKings optimizer" resolves to how seriously you are taking Week 1. Casual, one or two entries: the free draft screen is enough, spend your money on the contests. Tournaments or multi-entry: the ownership and simulation layer is the edge that decides the week, and the compressed QB board says the leverage decisions will be sitting at receiver and running back. You do not have to take my word for the difference. Try the Sims free, compare what a sim build looks like against what you would have hand-built from the draft screen, and the answer tends to make itself. Still weighing the wider tool market beyond these two? Our best DFS tools roundup ranks the field.

The Bottom Line

DraftKings will show you the Week 1 board: Gibbs at $8,000, a quarterback tier whose top eight fit inside $1,000, and 715 salaries waiting for a decision. What it will not tell you is which of those prices the field is about to pile onto. For one or two fun Week 1 lineups, the board alone is enough. For the biggest tournament slate of the year, played against a field that is all reading the same preseason headlines, the projections, ownership, and Sims are the difference between guessing with the crowd and building against it.
