Yesterday's Five Biggest Stories
1. Jaxson Dart Finally Had the Day the Giants Have Been Waiting For
Thursday's joint practice in Miami was a rout, and the quarterback was the reason. Jordan Raanan's summary of the session is that the Giants dominated it: the offense hit big plays, the Dolphins corners could not cover the Giants receivers even in early one-on-ones, and the first two plays of that period were deep touchdowns from Jaxson Dart to Darnell Mooney and Calvin Austin (@JordanRaanan). Dart finished 16-of-22 through live work with one interception, two of the incompletions were spikes, and Raanan called it the day the Giants had been waiting to see from him all summer (@JordanRaanan).
The usage underneath the box score is the part worth carrying into a draft room. Pat Leonard had Dart open team drills 4-for-4 with two throws to Isaiah Likely and two to Calvin Austin, and listed Cam Skattebo as the first-team back (@PLeonardNYDN). Raanan's read on the tight end is stronger still: Likely has become Dart's security blanket and favorite target, works the part of the field where Dart is at his best, and is set to be a large part of the offense even after Malik Nabers returns. Likely caught six balls in live drills (@JordanRaanan).
The defense matched it. Brian Burns was told the Giants had six sacks and disagreed, saying the number was higher (@JordanRaanan), and Deonte Banks opened one-on-ones with an end-zone interception while Malachi Fields won twice downfield (@PLeonardNYDN). From the other sideline, Joe Schad described it as total domination by the Giants defense, with Dolphins center Aaron Brewer having words for his offensive line on the sideline (@schadjoe).
We treat one joint practice as evidence about roles, not about outcomes. The role evidence here is unusually clean: an outside defense, a full live session, and a target hierarchy that held from the first period to the last. Practice ended with the Giants offense driving for a field goal as time expired (@JordanRaanan).
Why it matters: target hierarchies established against an outside defense hold up better than intra-squad reps, because the coverage is not scripted against the routes. Likely, Mooney, Austin and Fields all cleared that bar on the same afternoon.
2. A.J. Brown's Second Day Against the Eagles Went Differently
The two-day meeting between New England and Philadelphia ended with the receiver still the story and the result flipped. Underdog circulated a second installment of A.J. Brown against Quinyon Mitchell (@UnderdogNFL), and Brandon Gowton's count from the red-zone two-on-two work had Brown beating Mitchell for three touchdowns (@UnderdogNFL). Andrew Callahan's takeaway from Day 1 was that Brown is every bit the No. 1 receiver New England traded for (@_AndrewCallahan), and the Patriots' account marked the second day the same way.
Philadelphia won the day anyway. Gowton scored Day 2 for the Eagles after they lost Day 1, and read the response as a motivated one (@BrandonGowton). Evan Lazar's session notes have Drake Maye finishing strong with a situational-period touchdown but throwing two interceptions and looking less sharp in congested red-zone work, including one ball Brown bobbled (@ezlazar). Doug Kyed's line on Maye for the day was 9-of-18 with four touchdowns and two picks (@UnderdogNFL). Tariq Woolen jumped a Maye throw to Brown at the front of the end zone and took it back the other way (@EliotShorrParks).
The projectable piece of the two days is the red-zone rep set. Three scores against a starting corner in two-on-two work is about as close as camp gets to a repeatable usage signal, and it landed in the same session where Maye was at his least sharp in congested red-zone work. The thing that would settle it is Saturday's game, when Maye's reps come against a defense that has not spent two days installing against him (@Patriots).
The image that traveled furthest was the quietest one: Brown walked over to Jalen Hurts after practice and the two hugged and talked (@EliotShorrParks, @JimmyKempski). Brandon Gowton confirmed the pair had spoken for the first time since the trade (@BrandonGowton).
3. Fernando Mendoza's Preseason Night Started With a Pick-Six
Adam Schefter reported before kickoff that the Raiders planned to give the No. 1 overall pick roughly the first half against Houston, with Aidan O'Connell taking the second (@AdamSchefter). The first drive ended with a Mendoza pick-six (@UnderdogNFL). Las Vegas recovered and won the game in Houston (@Raiders).
For context on the workload, Klint Kubiak had said Mendoza would get a lot of reps, and the rookie's preseason debut a week earlier was 10-of-16 for 97 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions (@UnderdogNFL). Schefter's framing of the larger picture is the one to keep: this is the fourth straight season the Raiders open with a different head coach and quarterback pairing (@AdamSchefter).
Houston used the night as an evaluation. Aaron Wilson reported C.J. Stroud was slated for a few series and roughly 20 to 25 plays behind the first-team offensive line, with Woody Marks in the backfield and the defensive starters rested, as the staff continues to sort its top five linemen before the season opener against Buffalo (@AaronWilson_NFL). Marks turned the opening drive into five touches for 43 scrimmage yards and a touchdown (@UnderdogNFL).
4. Danny Pinter's Torn Patella Tendon Reopens the Ravens' Center Job
Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport reported that Baltimore center Danny Pinter tore his patella tendon in Wednesday's joint practice with Minnesota, and that Pinter had impressed while working with the starters through camp (@MikeGarafolo). Jeff Zrebiec, who was in Eagan for it, wrote that the 30-year-old was a few weeks from locking down a starting job for the first time in his career before he got rolled up, and that the injury puts his season in jeopardy and adds uncertainty to the Baltimore offensive line (@jeffzrebiec).
A replacement is already in view. Rapoport reported that veteran Ethan Pocic, who had been scheduled to ramp up his workload this coming week, is now the most likely option to take over the job Tyler Linderbaum vacated (@RapSheet). Snap operation and interior protection for Lamar Jackson is the fantasy consequence, and it is the kind of line-level change that tends to show up in a quarterback's pressure rate rather than in a headline.
5. George Kittle Has a Real Path to the Opener in Australia
Schefter reported that Kittle visited Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles on Wednesday — the surgeon who repaired his torn Achilles in January — and that the visit was described as encouraging. Kittle's recovery is ahead of schedule, and per Schefter's sources that gives him a legitimate chance to play in the regular-season opener in Australia against the Rams (@AdamSchefter).
That date is the hinge for San Francisco's entire roster, not just its tight end. Matt Barrows notes that the 49ers fly to Melbourne on Sept. 2, three days after cutdowns, and a player who is not on the plane does not play in the opener (@mattbarrows). A healthy Kittle changes the target math in that offense more than any other single availability question on the roster. Our fantasy WR1 board tracks the pass-catcher tiers this decision feeds.

- Zrebiec's broader takeaway after two days against Minnesota is that the Ravens defense is well ahead of the offense, which he frames as expected for this point of August (@jeffzrebiec).
- Trey Hendrickson was again the first Raven on the field, and Brian Wacker had him at two to three sacks on the day against a Minnesota line that includes Christian Darrisaw (@ryanmink, @brianwacker1).
Buffalo Bills
- A Bills defender was overheard during the Browns joint practice complaining that Cleveland was throwing nothing but checkdowns (@DanielOyefusi).
- Joe Buscaglia and Zac Jackson's roundtable on the practice describes a feisty afternoon in Berea that will not produce any fines, with the Browns treating it as a chance to punch above their weight class (@AkronJackson).
- Former Buffalo safety Taylor Rapp signed with Denver (@AdamSchefter).
Carolina Panthers
- Still the story in Carolina from the Jacksonville joint practice: Tre'von Moehrig delivered one of the biggest hits of the session, which Joseph Person notes surprised nobody (@josephperson).

- The Bengals' account posted the practice clip its followers had been asking for (@Bengals).
Cleveland Browns

- Todd Monken's review was positive. He acknowledged Sanders started slowly on his first few team reps, called the mid-drill quarterback substitution awkward for anyone, and said Sanders did great (@DanielOyefusi).
- The other side of Cleveland's day: Deshaun Watson threw a red-zone interception in the same joint practice (@UnderdogNFL).
- Rookie quarterback Taylen Green connected with Tylan Wallace in the end zone for what Camryn Justice called the offensive play of the day (@camijustice).
- Defensive end Alex Wright was carted off with a lower-leg injury and could not put weight on it (@MaryKayCabot).
Dallas Cowboys
- The NFL fined the Cowboys and Saints $500,000 each for what it called the actions at their joint practice earlier in the week, noting that the Competition Committee has made sportsmanship at joint practices a point of emphasis and that all clubs were reminded of it by memo before camp (@AdamSchefter, @RapSheet).
- Von Miller practiced in full pads and beat Terence Steele for two pressures on Dak Prescott (@jonmachota, @clarencehilljr).
- Jaishawn Barham (groin) is likely to make his preseason debut against Arizona (@VoiceOfTheStar).

- Denver hosts Green Bay in Preseason Week 2 (@Broncos).
Detroit Lions
- Sam LaPorta's status for the opener is unclear after a hip injury sustained in a recent practice cost him multiple practices this week. - Campbell also gave quick updates on Ben Bartch and Jimmy Rolder and on the quarterback rotation for Saturday's preseason game (@Justin_Rogers).
- Ennis Rakestraw exited a short practice with a lower-leg injury, while Jack Campbell was disruptive throughout (@Justin_Rogers).

- Indianapolis finished its second joint practice with Atlanta, the session Daniel Flick wrote up in full (@ByDanielFlick).

- Schad's Fins Up/Fins Down column frames the pass-protection struggles as the takeaway, in a feisty joint practice with plenty of extracurriculars (@schadjoe).
- The Miami corners could not stay with the Giants receivers in early one-on-ones (@JordanRaanan).
Minnesota Vikings
- Undrafted rookie Jacob Thomas continues to take first-team defensive snaps, including through the Ravens joint practices, and Alec Lewis' read is that he is not a tick slow in that group (@alec_lewis).
- Trey Hendrickson had two to three sacks on the day, and on one red-zone rep he beat his man off the edge so quickly that he was celebrating before Kyler Murray got the ball out (@brianwacker1, @brianwacker1).
- Kevin O'Connell was complimentary of Jesse Minter's defense after Day 1, and both teams built Day 2 around red-zone work and a two-minute drill ending in a game-winning field goal attempt (@ryanmink).

- Maye's first-team high red-zone reps produced a flag Brown drew on a deep vertical, one stuffed run, one positive draw and a quick out on third down (@ezlazar).
- The New England defense reached six interceptions across the two joint practices, including a Marcus Jones tip-drill pick-six (@_AndrewCallahan).
New Orleans Saints

- Isaiah Likely caught six balls in live drills and has become what Raanan calls Dart's security blanket and favorite receiver, a role he expects to hold even once Malik Nabers is back (@JordanRaanan).
- Josh Ezeudu took first-team right guard reps for the rest of practice once Francis Mauigoa came out, which Raanan found notable enough to connect to the Daniel Faalele trade (@JordanRaanan).
- Mauigoa left with what was described as a heat-related issue and is not believed to be serious (@JordanRaanan).
New York Jets
- Geno Smith will start Friday's game against Pittsburgh (@Connor_J_Hughes).

Philadelphia Eagles
- Dontayvion Wicks beat Carlton Davis cleanly on a route EJ Smith singled out, the kind of rep that keeps building his case in the Philadelphia receiver room (@EJSmith94, @UnderdogNFL).
- Zach Berman called the late-game situational period the Eagles' best sequence of the week: Tariq Woolen tipped a pass to A.J. Brown, Jalyx Hunt made a diving interception, and Jalen Hurts answered with a four-play touchdown drive hitting Dallas Goedert, Wicks and Hollywood (@ZBerm).

- Pittsburgh hosts the Jets on Friday, with Geno Smith starting for New York (@steelers, @Connor_J_Hughes).
San Francisco 49ers
- George Kittle's visit with Dr. Neal ElAttrache was encouraging and his Achilles recovery is ahead of schedule, giving him a real chance at the opener in Australia (@AdamSchefter).
- San Francisco signed Khalil Herbert to a one-year deal and placed Patrick Taylor Jr. on injured reserve to make room (@49ers, @MaioccoNBCS).
- The left guard competition may have grown again: Matt Maiocco noted Austen Pleasants taking snaps there alongside Connor Colby, Robert Jones and Carver Willis (@MaioccoNBCS).

San Francisco 49ers Wide Receiver Battle: How to Read the Reps
Most position battles get to run until the preseason finale. San Francisco's does not, and that compressed calendar is what makes this one readable right now. Matt Barrows lays out the math in his rundown of the 49ers' unresolved positions: rosters cut to 53 in 10 days, and three days after that, on Sept. 2, San Francisco flies to Melbourne. A player who is not on that plane does not play in the opener against the Rams (@mattbarrows).
That deadline turns a normal depth-chart question into a real one for fantasy purposes. Jacob Cowing and Jordan Watkins are competing for the same roles rather than for separate spots on the depth chart, which is the detail that matters: one of them absorbing the other's snaps is a different outcome than both making the roster in complementary jobs. Watkins gave the staff something concrete to weigh with six catches for 59 yards in the preseason opener, and Thursday's game against the Chargers was the next scheduled look.
Read the assignment, not the catch total. Barrows expected San Francisco to put rookie Carver Willis in front of the Chargers' top defensive linemen at left guard, and Matt Maiocco came away from the night noting that Austen Pleasants had taken snaps at the same spot, which would make it a four-man competition with Connor Colby and Robert Jones (@MaioccoNBCS). Coaching staffs put players in the situations they need answers about; the difficulty of the assignment carries more information than the result of any one rep.
What we are watching: whether one of Cowing or Watkins starts drawing the other's snaps in the same personnel groupings before cutdowns. If the roles stay split, both are roster-viable and neither is projectable. If one consolidates, the third receiver job in that offense becomes worth something.
The backfield behind them tightened up on the same day. San Francisco signed Khalil Herbert and put Patrick Taylor Jr. on injured reserve to make room (@49ers), and Maiocco had Taylor in line for a 53-man spot before the move, with Isaac Guerendo still to be cleared off PUP (@MaioccoNBCS). Our projections keep every one of these 49ers in a wide band until the Melbourne roster is set, because a role that has not been assigned cannot be modeled. For the tier above this one, our fantasy WR1 board tracks where the settled receivers land.

Keep Building Your 2026 Draft Board
Thursday moved three things worth carrying into a draft room: a tight end in New York who caught six balls and has become his quarterback's security blanket, a tight end in San Francisco whose Achilles recovery just put the season opener back on the table, and a tight end in Detroit whose availability for that same opening weekend is now an open question. Positions this thin at the top do not absorb three simultaneous changes quietly. These are the tiers those moves feed into.
