Yesterday's Five Biggest Stories

1. Drew Allar Accounted for Three Touchdowns in His First NFL Action

The rookie quarterback owned Thursday night. Adam Schefter's line on Allar's preseason debut: 10-of-13 passing, 154 yards, three total touchdowns, no interceptions (@AdamSchefter), and PFF posted the identical box (@PFF).

It started at the ceiling. Allar's first NFL pass went for 74 yards (@UnderdogNFL), and he finished three drives with three touchdowns (@UnderdogNFL). Pittsburgh's feed marked the moment he entered (@steelers) and the rookie-to-rookie connections after it (@steelers). Brooke Pryor had him out early, walking laps with a play sheet in his hands (@bepryor). Pittsburgh won 28-9 (@steelers).

The usage note underneath the highlights is the one that moves a draft board. Alex Kozora charted the Steelers backfield and found that Kaleb Johnson, the third-round pick of 2025, did not take a single offensive snap in the first half — Travis Homer and Lew Nichols worked ahead of him (@Alex_Kozora). Camp reporting had already placed Johnson behind the veterans in that room — the August 13 edition carried him as still contending but rarely creating more than what was blocked. This is the first snap count that agrees with it.

What to watch: the second preseason game, not this box score. A rookie quarterback's three-touchdown night against backup defenses is a headline, but the number that survives into September is the one Kozora counted — who takes the first-half offensive snaps at running back. That snap order is the reason to keep Johnson below the veterans until a preseason game changes the usage, and a zero in the first half is the cleanest confirmation available. The rest of the position sits on our fantasy RB1 board.

2. Arizona Won in Las Vegas and Lost a Second-Round Guard Doing It

Carson Beck did not play. Ian Rapoport reported the quarterback was held out of the game against the Raiders with a rib injury from the previous Thursday's Hall of Fame game, that it is not considered serious, and that Beck had practiced through soreness all week before the team decided to sit him (@RapSheet). The Cardinals' own aftermath piece traces the same rib discomfort to a sack against Carolina and carries Beck's version: he did not want to get hit again and make it worse.

Jacoby Brissett ran the offense instead and threw a touchdown to Marvin Harrison Jr. (@AZCardinals, @AZCardinals). Arizona won 27-14, and the same team story puts the offense's two-game preseason line at 50-of-59 passing for 514 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions, with 4.3 yards per carry on the ground.

The cost came in the third quarter. Second-round guard Chase Bisontis hurt his left knee and was carted off; Mike LaFleur's assessment was "not good." Darren Urban's notebook carried the same three threads out of the night — the offense clicking, the Bisontis injury and Beck's disappointment (@Cardschatter). Rookie running back Jeremiyah Love opened slowly and found a rhythm — through two drives he had five carries and a catch, none longer than nine yards — before an ankle injury he could have returned from if the game had needed him (@UnderdogNFL, @UnderdogNFL, @UnderdogNFL).

3. Terrion Arnold Is Expected to Sign With Seattle

The night's biggest roster move landed during the games. Rapoport reported that the former Lions first-round cornerback is expected to sign with the Seahawks after several visits (@RapSheet), Schefter had it from ESPN sources with the other stops attached — the Texans, Saints and Giants (@AdamSchefter) — and Jordan Schultz confirmed it from multiple sources (@Schultz_Report).

Two pieces of context belong with it. Schefter reported that Arnold has eight pending felony charges stemming from an alleged armed robbery and kidnapping, that Detroit released him in late June, and that the league still has to decide whether to place him on the Commissioner's Exempt List (@AdamSchefter, @AdamSchefter). Per ESPN's story on the signing, that decision is the gate between an agreement and a player on the field.

The how is a Hard Knocks artifact. Schefter noted that Arnold's workout with Seattle aired on the second episode, in which general manager John Schneider was shown discussing the idea in his office beforehand (@AdamSchefter). Schultz added the personal reference: Arnold is close friends with Seahawks quarterback Jalen Milroe, who vouched for him inside the building (@Schultz_Report).

The gate: Seattle has reached an agreement; the league has not ruled. The fantasy mechanism here is indirect and it runs through the opponent — a competent CB2 in Seattle changes how willing opposing quarterbacks are to throw that side, which is a downgrade to the other team's WR2 in those matchups, not to any Seahawk. All of it is moot until the Exempt List question resolves, so this stays a roster note in our files rather than a projection input.

4. Joe Burrow Got Sacked on His First Preseason Drive

Cincinnati played its starting quarterback, and he was sacked on his first preseason drive (@UnderdogNFL). On a separate third-down rep, Paul Dehner Jr. had Orlando Brown beaten around the outside by Eric O'Neill, with Burrow taking a big hit in the back as he released the throw (@pauldehnerjr).

One rep in August is one rep. The reason it is worth logging anyway is that Burrow's availability is the load-bearing input in every Cincinnati fantasy projection, and the Bengals put him on the field in a game they went on to win over Detroit (@Bengals, @davebirkett).

5. Fernando Mendoza and Kirk Cousins Both Delivered in Vegas

The Raiders' rookie quarterback threw his first professional touchdown pass, and both Schefter and Rapoport posted it inside a minute of each other (@AdamSchefter, @RapSheet). Underdog's verdict on the throw was one word: dot (@UnderdogNFL).

The veteran was efficient in a short shift. Kirk Cousins went 5-of-6 for 50 yards and a touchdown on his only drive as a Raider (@UnderdogNFL, @PFF), including a 13-yard completion to tight end Michael Mayer (@RapSheet). Las Vegas lost the game but got the two answers it went looking for; the team's own wrap put it as rookies making noise and veterans coming out swinging (@Raiders).

The number: one. That is how many drives Cousins took, and the rookie worked the rest of the night around him. Completion percentage in August is noise; the rep order is the signal, and the observable is simply that the veteran's night was one series long. If Mendoza opens the next game with the first team, the order has changed and it is a competition. Thursday did not settle that either way.

Arizona Cardinals

• Carson Beck sat out the game in Las Vegas with a rib injury carried over from the Hall of Fame game, and Jacoby Brissett ran the offense in his place (see the top five) (@RapSheet).
• Mike LaFleur had set the workload expectation in advance: the starters were down for one to two series (@UnderdogNFL).
• Brissett found Marvin Harrison Jr. for a touchdown (@AZCardinals), and Arizona came home with the win (@AZCardinals).

Atlanta Falcons

• Michael Penix Jr. is working through the part of the comeback that does not show on a medical chart. • Denver is the visitor for Atlanta's preseason game, and the Broncos spent the evening pointing at it (@Broncos).

Baltimore Ravens

• Lamar Jackson had his sharpest practice of camp. Jamison Hensley had him 11-of-12 midway through, highlighted by a 40-yard sideline connection with Rashod Bateman (@jamisonhensley), and Jonas Shaffer's unofficial final was 12-of-13 in team drills with no misses in 11-on-11s and chunk gains to Bateman and Ja'Kobi Lane (@jonas_shaffer).
• Shaffer also carried the availability half: Baltimore will rest Jackson and its other established starters for Saturday's game against Philadelphia (@jonas_shaffer).
• The secondary is trending back. Jeff Zrebiec reported that both Nate Wiggins and Marlon Humphrey should return to practice at some point next week and that both are dealing with relatively small things (@jeffzrebiec).
• Bateman and Rayshaun Benny were back on the field. Still out: Rasheen Ali, Octavian Smith, PUP cases Teddye Buchanan and Carl Jones, Calais Campbell, Wiggins, Humphrey and Jacquez Robinson (@jeffzrebiec). The team also marked Pernell McPhee retiring as a Raven (@Ravens).

Buffalo Bills

Quiet day in Bills camp — nothing notable to report.

Carolina Panthers

• Chuba Hubbard has a hamstring injury and is week-to-week, per Dave Canales (@mike_e_kaye), with an MRI behind the diagnosis (@mike_e_kaye).
• That turns the preseason into an audition for everyone behind him. Per Mike Kaye's camp notebook at ESPN, Jonathon Brooks and Trevor Etienne rotate with the starters while Hubbard is out, and A.J. Dillon gets early work against Buffalo — three names for one vacated workload (@mike_e_kaye).
• The same notebook names third-year receiver Jalen Coker the standout of Carolina's summer, with Dave Canales crediting him for getting open with regularity and catching the ball cleanly. The team's own camp observations post led with the same "week-to-week" language on Hubbard (@Panthers).

Chicago Bears

• The most useful Bears quote of the day is about workload, not games. Ben Johnson said he does not know that he needs to see Caleb Williams take preseason snaps, and that he is focused instead on the volume of reps the quarterback is getting throughout camp (@CourtneyRCronin).
• He made it official the same afternoon: Williams does not play Saturday, and Tyson Bagent starts against the Browns (@RapSheet).
• Off the field, chairman George McCaskey said the name is not changing regardless of where the stadium lands (@RapSheet), and Brad Biggs' stadium piece tracked the Hammond push (@BradBiggs).

Cincinnati Bengals

• Joe Burrow played, was sacked on his opening drive, and later took a big hit as he threw when Orlando Brown lost the edge to Eric O'Neill on third down (see the top five) (@pauldehnerjr).
• Tight end Jack Endries is the depth-chart story. Charlie Goldsmith reported he has been in the building at 6:45 a.m. every day doing 90 extra minutes of homework while getting few practice reps in a veteran room — then scored a touchdown when he got the night's opportunity (@CharlieG__).
• Goldsmith's broader read: this is Zac Taylor's deepest roster, and the backup-spot competition produced several performances worth re-watching (@CharlieG__).
• Burrow's story about receiver Dohnte Meyers — a training-camp text that turned into an overnight drive from Atlanta — is the kind of thing that explains a camp riser (@pauldehnerjr).

Cleveland Browns

• Per Zac Jackson's story at The Athletic, Todd Monken told the team that Deshaun Watson starts Saturday's opener against Chicago and Shedeur Sanders starts the second preseason game on Aug. 22 against Buffalo (@AkronJackson).
• The same story carries the usage line worth more than the quarterback noise: second-year running back Dylan Sampson has been heavily involved in the passing game through two weeks of camp, and the rest of the offensive depth chart is close to set at the top.

Dallas Cowboys

• Nothing else from the Dallas beat cleared the wire; Jon Machota's practice post of the day was Dak Prescott without an accompanying note (@jonmachota).

Denver Broncos

• Denver's preseason opener is at Atlanta, and the team published the full how-to-watch rundown for it (@Broncos).
• The uniform combination for the game got its own reveal (@Broncos).

Detroit Lions

• Terrion Arnold, the first-round cornerback Detroit released in late June, is expected to sign with Seattle (see the top five) (@RapSheet, @AdamSchefter).
• The Lions lost the preseason opener to Cincinnati (@davebirkett).
• Cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. went to the locker room with an injury (@nolanbianchi); Dan Campbell said afterward it appeared to be an arm contusion and not serious (@davebirkett).

Green Bay Packers

• The first-team offense got a real drive and stayed conservative with it. Ryan Wood charted 10 plays on the opener, with Jordan Love 3-of-5 for 19 yards including a 19-yarder to Jayden Reed on third-and-5 (@ByRyanWood).
• Same thread, the backfield: MarShawn Lloyd handled four carries for 12 yards on that drive, which Wood read as no holding back on the workload (@ByRyanWood; the post mistakenly used Marshawn Lynch's surname).
• Kicker Trey Smack was the story of the first half — he made from 58 twice, once on a kick that did not count, plus a 37-yarder (@RobDemovsky, @WesHod).
• Lukas Van Ness got a sack, and Matt Schneidman's note from the same stretch was that Zaire Franklin's blitz hit on the running back was the more violent of the two (@mattschneidman). Green Bay lost 28-9, and the pregame belonged to Aaron Rodgers and Love linking up before kickoff (@UnderdogNFL, @packers).

Houston Texans

• Aaron Wilson laid out the full participation plan before kickoff: the starting offensive line, including rookie center Keylan Rutledge, was down for about a series, Davis Mills was to play briefly and Graham Mertz the majority of the game, with C.J. Stroud, David Montgomery, Woody Marks and Nico Collins all rested (@AaronWilson_NFL).
• No Texans beat reporting cleared the wire past the participation plan. The team feed's night was a rookie interception and a first-name-only shout for Marlin (@HoustonTexans, @HoustonTexans).
• Houston was one of the stops on Terrion Arnold's free-agent tour before he chose Seattle (@AdamSchefter).

Indianapolis Colts

• With Drake Maye and the New England starters down, the game was a backup-quarterback showcase on the Patriots' side (@MikeReiss).
• Anthony Richardson Sr.'s first drive was rough — 1-of-3 for 17 yards with an interception (@UnderdogNFL) — and James Boyd's read from later in the game was that Richardson was dealing (@RomeovilleKid).

Jacksonville Jaguars

• The role clarity on Brian Thomas Jr. is the Jaguars item that changes a projection. Per Cameron Wolfe, Thomas will play "X" receiver this season because the staff decided his strength is not taking physicality over the middle — they want him going deep, and the comparison offered was Brandin Cooks and Sammy Watkins in the Rams offense (@UnderdogNFL).
• Jacksonville worked against New Orleans, and the visitors got the better of one marquee rep: Chris Olave beat Travis Hunter for a big play (@UnderdogNFL).
• The team feed's practice color was Hunter and a jump ball from the rookie class (@Jaguars, @Jaguars).

Kansas City Chiefs

• Andy Reid said Patrick Mahomes will not play in the preseason game against the Rams (@RapSheet).
• Kansas City wrapped its 14th practice in St. Joseph before the opener, and Matt McMullen's notebook has what stood out (@KCChiefs_Matt).

Las Vegas Raiders

• Sean McVay's quarterback plan for the game against Kansas City: Stetson Bennett starts and Ty Simpson also plays (@RapSheet).
• The Rams' offense turned up as a reference point elsewhere — the model Jacksonville cited for how it intends to use Brian Thomas Jr. deep (@UnderdogNFL).

Miami Dolphins

Minnesota Vikings

• Minnesota's preseason game is against the Giants on Saturday, and Pat Leonard's show previewed the position battles and players to watch in it (@PLeonardNYDN).

New England Patriots

• Drake Maye and the starters sat, so Tommy DeVito ran the offense (@MikeReiss) and played the entire first half. Per Evan Lazar's takeaways at Patriots.com, his downfield accuracy was inconsistent — he underthrew more than one deep shot (@ezlazar).
• The receiver was the night's best offensive news: Lazar's player of the game, Kyle Williams, turned two catches into 37 yards and a 12-yard fade for the touchdown (@Patriots, @ezlazar).
• The RB3 competition reshuffled around an injury. Terrell Jennings went on injured reserve and New England signed JaMycal Hasty (@AdamSchefter, @Patriots); in the game, seventh-rounder Jam Miller carried 14 times for 55 yards while Lan Larison played 40 snaps and caught six passes for 38 yards. Doug Kyed's framing of the week: the running back competition took another hit (@DougKyed).
• Christian Gonzalez was held out after a hard fall in Monday's practice — Mike Vrabel's line was that he was physically unavailable — and he was one of eight Patriots rested, a group that also included Christian Barmore and Christian Elliss. Rookie tackle Caleb Lomu played 39 first-half snaps and allowed one pressure; Mike Reiss' postgame ledger listed center Ben Brown and guard Rupcich among the night's injuries in a 13-13 tie, with joint practices against Philadelphia on Aug. 19-20 and a game on Aug. 22 next (@MikeReiss).

New Orleans Saints

• Tyler Shough ran the best offensive day of Saints camp on Thursday. Nick Underhill had the first-team offense "blazing" from the opening period and called it an extremely strong day (@nick_underhill, @nick_underhill), with Shough 7-of-8 to start on a lot of downfield throws (@nick_underhill).
• Three touchdowns came out of it, two of them tagged as red-zone work — two to Chris Olave and one to Devaughn Vele (@nick_underhill, @nick_underhill, @nick_underhill). Jeff Duncan had Shough unofficially 11-of-14 before red-zone drills and wrote that he is starting to look like a player who elevates in competitive settings (@JeffDuncan_).
• Rookie receiver Jordyn Tyson left the practice with an injury (@AdamSchefter). More in the injury section below.
• Lorenzo Styles has been winning his gunner reps, including beating a double team (@nick_underhill), and Chase Young said he had six sacks in the joint work against Jacksonville (@UnderdogNFL).

New York Giants

• The first-team plan for Saturday is leaning toward playing. John Harbaugh said he values first-team reps and has to measure that against the risk (@JordanRaanan), then talked about a second-year quarterback who did not play a full season last year — which Jordan Raanan reads as Jaxson Dart and most of the first-team offense getting at least a series (@JordanRaanan).
• New York was one of Terrion Arnold's visits before he chose Seattle, and Art Stapleton had the sequence (@art_stapleton).
• Rookie kicker Dominic Zvada is the camp battle nobody expected to be talking about; Stapleton's piece on his summer is worth the click (@art_stapleton).

New York Jets

Quiet day in Jets camp — nothing notable to report.

Philadelphia Eagles

• Jimmy Kempski called the WR2 job for Dontayvion Wicks in his camp battle tracker (@JimmyKempski). Full reasoning in the spotlight below.
• The Eagles are Baltimore's opponent Saturday, and the Ravens plan to rest Lamar Jackson and their other established starters for it (@jonas_shaffer).
• Philadelphia is also New England's next stop after that: joint practices Aug. 19-20 and a game Aug. 22 (@MikeReiss).
• Brandon Lee Gowton's roundup collected the day's other Eagles noise, including the team's social account posting a Quinyon Mitchell interception thrown by Jalen Hurts (@BrandonGowton).

Pittsburgh Steelers

San Francisco 49ers

• Ricky Pearsall posted about having surgery on his PCL and about his mindset through the recovery (@RapSheet).
• De'Zhaun Stribling is the name filling the gap. David Lombardi wrote that the 49ers can bubble-wrap him because he is ready to go for the regular season, calling him the best receiver from the 2026 draft class (@LombardiHimself), and Underdog's clip of the camp hype checked out (@UnderdogNFL).
• Quarterback Kurtis Rourke was ruled out of the game with a rib injury (@MaioccoNBCS).

Seattle Seahawks

Washington Commanders

• An attorney for Jayden Daniels told LSU it can no longer use his name, image and likeness, per an Aug. 5 letter to athletic director Verge Ausberry reported by ESPN's Mark Schlabach (@AdamSchefter).
• Mike Garafolo added the limit of it: the letter says nothing about the No. 5 jersey and makes no legal claim to the number — it is solely about Daniels' NIL (@MikeGarafolo).

Philadelphia Eagles WR2 Battle: How to Read the Reps

Philadelphia's receiver competition had been the most-watched positional race in the NFC East all summer, and on Thursday the writer tracking it every practice closed it. The winner is Dontayvion Wicks, and Kempski's case rests on two things: Wicks has more game experience than the rest of the field, and he has built rapport and timing with Jalen Hurts quickly. The number that matters to a fantasy roster is not WR2 status but the volume attached to it. DeVonta Smith is the clear WR1; what Kempski has resolved is who gets the second-most snaps in three-receiver sets, which in this offense has historically been a starter's workload rather than a rotational one. Our projections have been treating that job as a split until somebody claimed it, and a beat writer closing the case after a month of daily notes is the strongest signal available in mid-August that the split is over.
