1. Jadeveon Clowney Comes Home to Houston

The Texans are signing Jadeveon Clowney, their own former No. 1 overall pick, who stays in his hometown to play (@RapSheet). Mike Garafolo added that Clowney arrives off an 8.5-sack season with the Cowboys (@MikeGarafolo), and Aaron Wilson pegged the deal at a $5.5 million base with a maximum value of $8 million (@AaronWilson_NFL). 2. 49ers Sign Khalil Herbert With the Backfield Banged Up

San Francisco signed veteran RB Khalil Herbert, first reported by Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter). David Lombardi filled in the context: the 49ers view Herbert as a veteran return specialist, and the move comes with both Jordan James and Kaelon Black dealing with issues at running back. 4. Ja'Lynn Polk Retires at 24

The Saints placed WR Ja'Lynn Polk on the reserve/retired list; the former Patriots second-rounder walks away at 24 (@RapSheet). Nick Underhill reported Polk was healthy, happy with his role and getting significant snaps, and simply decided stepping away was the best path forward (@nick_underhill). 5. Travis Hunter Turns In His Most Impressive Practice

Dolphins Running Back Battle: How to Read the Reps

Jeff Hafley saying he wants Ollie Gordon II "to compete to be a complete back" rather than just a short-yardage back is coach-speak worth translating (@schadjoe). Short-yardage backs get touchdown equity with no floor; complete backs get passing downs, and passing downs are where PPR value lives. The reps to watch start Monday, when Miami puts the pads on, the setting Gordon himself says he can't wait for (@DavidFurones_): unpadded July reps tell you who the staff wants to evaluate, but padded August reps tell you who they trust. Our projections treat a coach's stated intention as a hypothesis, then wait for the padded-practice rep split to confirm it. If Gordon is still catching third-down work in a week, his draft cost will not have caught up to his role.
