Yesterday's Five Biggest Stories
1. Minnesota Named Kyler Murray Its Starting Quarterback
The competition that dominated the first two weeks of Vikings camp ended on Tuesday afternoon. Adam Schefter reported that Minnesota had named Kyler Murray its starting quarterback (@AdamSchefter), and followed it with word that Kevin O'Connell had informed the team (@AdamSchefter). The Vikings confirmed it themselves a couple of hours later (@Vikings), and O'Connell took questions on the decision that evening (@Vikings).
Per ESPN's story from Kevin Seifert, O'Connell said Murray had shown enough command of the offense to earn the job, praising his accuracy, his athleticism and how quickly he absorbs and executes what the staff gives him (@AdamSchefter). The timing is the part that matters most for a draft board: making the call in the second week of August hands Murray roughly a month of uninterrupted first-team reps before the September 13 opener against Green Bay, rather than splitting them into September. ESPN reports both quarterbacks still play in Saturday's preseason game against the Giants.
The financial backdrop is unusual. Murray signed a minimum deal with Minnesota this offseason while Arizona continues to pay the bulk of his salary, and his contract carries a no-tag clause that lets him reach free agency next offseason if he wants it (@AdamSchefter). Schefter also framed the churn behind him: Murray will be the Vikings' fourth different Week 1 starting quarterback in four years, after Kirk Cousins, Sam Darnold and J.J. McCarthy (@AdamSchefter).
The reps backed it up immediately. Will Ragatz noted that Murray's first camp dropback as the official QB1 was a 20-yard strike to Justin Jefferson on an intermediate in-breaking route (@WillRagatz), and that Murray then turned in one of his best practices of camp — one ball on the ground all day, with chunk gains to Jefferson, Jordan Addison and Felton (@WillRagatz). Ragatz's read on the timing was blunt: the two quarterbacks never started camp on equal ground given their track records (@WillRagatz). Murray's own account of it was that the process was transparent throughout and that he never expected the job to be handed to him (@WillRagatz).
What to watch: the rep split, not the depth chart. ESPN reports both quarterbacks still play Saturday against the Giants, so the exhibition snaps will look shared. The number that matters is what happens in practice the rest of the month — a named starter who takes essentially all of the first-team work is a different fantasy input than one still splitting it, and Minnesota has four weeks to build the timing that a September announcement would not have allowed. Where that leaves Murray against the rest of the position is the question our fantasy QB1 board tracks.
McCarthy moves to the bench. Schefter noted that the 23-year-old lost his entire rookie season to injury and has made just ten career starts, with Minnesota winning six of them (@AdamSchefter); ESPN reports O'Connell said he absolutely believes McCarthy has a future with the organization.
2. Miami Promised De'Von Achane a Workload Almost Nobody Carries
The most fantasy-relevant sentence spoken on Tuesday came from a radio hit. Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley told "The Rich Eisen Show" that De'Von Achane could have games in which he touches the ball more than 40 times (@AdamSchefter). Hafley's version of the conversation with his running back was that he gave Achane a heads-up that morning and told him he had better be in good shape (@UnderdogNFL).
ESPN's write-up is the version worth reading, because it supplies the context the clip does not. Hafley was speaking loosely — he also joked about having to carry Achane back to the locker room — and the number he floated is close to unheard of: only five players since 2010 have recorded 40 or more touches in a single game. Achane's actual 2025 season ran to 305 touches on 238 carries and 67 receptions, with eight games above 20 touches and a season high of 28.
So the literal 40 is hyperbole, and we would treat it that way. The direction is not. Per ESPN, Miami signed Achane to a four-year, $64 million extension with $32 million of it locked in, and built the offense around him after losing Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, which leaves a backfield touch projection that starts high and has very little competing for it. Hafley's other line to Achane — that he never wants to see a head tap asking to come off all year — is the tell. Coaches describe the role they intend to use, and a coach talking about a back's conditioning in August is describing a snap rate, not a highlight.
How we would price it: off the 2025 baseline, not the quote. A back who already ran 305 touches with eight 20-plus-touch games has an established ceiling; the news is that the two receivers who competed for those touches are gone and the staff is signalling it wants the number to go up. That is a workload argument, not a 40-touch one — and it is the sort of input that moves a back up our fantasy RB1 board.
3. Dallas' Rebuilt Defense Won the Joint Practice With the Rams
The Cowboys and Rams held their joint practice in California on Tuesday, and the defense Dallas spent the offseason rebuilding was the story of it. Patrik Walker's running account had multiple first-team sacks early — Donovan Ezeiruaku and Isaiah Land the first two — plus a Shavon Revel pass breakup on a Matthew Stafford go ball to Puka Nacua (@VoiceOfTheStar), and by midway through he had three first-team sacks, two interceptions and a run defense shutting down the Rams' backs (@VoiceOfTheStar). His verdict when it ended was that the Dallas defense took the day and it was not close (@VoiceOfTheStar).
Linebacker Justin Barron was the individual story: three interceptions, two off Stetson Bennett and one off Stafford (@UnderdogNFL, @dallascowboys). Walker also flagged Stafford struggling to solve the coverage Christian Parker was calling, with pass breakups, errant throws and throwaways outnumbering the good plays (@VoiceOfTheStar).
The offense took a while to arrive. Jon Machota's early notes had nothing big from the Dallas offense, a broken-up play-action shot to CeeDee Lamb, a Jaydon Blue fumble and Joe Milton working with the twos (@jonmachota). By the third team period Dak Prescott had found Ryan Flournoy for a big gain on a slant and thrown two touchdowns, along with a red-zone interception on a throw to George Pickens (@jonmachota); Tommy Yarrish's wrap had Prescott closing with four touchdowns in the red-zone work (@tommy_yarrish).
The day ended with the Cowboys' player-led post-practice conditioning, which drew jokes from Rams players walking past, and Pickens telling them to keep moving and mind their own business (@clarencehilljr, @jonmachota).
4. Cleveland's First Depth Chart Refused to Name a Quarterback
The Browns released their first unofficial depth chart on Tuesday and left the most important line on it unresolved. Todd Monken said it should read "Deshaun Watson or Shedeur Sanders" at quarterback and that he was not ready to name a starter for Saturday's game against the Bears (@MaryKayCabot, @UnderdogNFL), and the published chart carried exactly that (@MaryKayCabot).
The rest of the chart moved plenty, and it formalizes the promotions the August 11 edition carried. Daniel Oyefusi's rundown has rookie Spencer Fano holding the starting left tackle job, rookies KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston listed as starting receivers alongside Jerry Jeudy, Teven Jenkins ahead of KT Leveston at right guard and Easton Mascarenas-Arnold in a starting role (@DanielOyefusi).
The quarterback day itself was uneven. Mary Kay Cabot logged Watson's ninth interception in 12 practices (@MaryKayCabot), and Oyefusi noted Sanders working the seven-on-seven period with the ones (@DanielOyefusi). Scott Petrak reported the exhibition split that governs the next two weeks: Watson and Sanders will each start one of the first two preseason games (@ScottPetrak).
5. Chicago Lost Coby Bryant for Most of the Season
The Bears' safety had knee surgery on Friday and will miss four to six months, per Ben Johnson, with the team hoping he returns at the end of the season (@AdamSchefter, @BradBiggs, @CourtneyRCronin).
The revision is what made it news. Jacob Infante pointed out that the initial reporting had Bryant at eight to 10 weeks, an estimate that was not close to the eventual timeline (@jacobinfante24), and his follow-up framed the cost plainly: Chicago still has an experienced starter in Xavier Woods to pair with Dillon Thieneman, but losing one of the league's better safeties from last season is a real blow to the defense (@jacobinfante24). Brad Biggs had already written that the run of secondary injuries has created legitimate concerns in Chicago (@BradBiggs). The Bears' first unofficial depth chart landed the same day (@kfishbain, @CourtneyRCronin).

Team-by-Team Camp Notes
Arizona Cardinals
- The Kyler Murray decision in Minnesota is partly an Arizona story. Murray signed a minimum deal with the Vikings while the Cardinals continue paying the bulk of his salary, and his contract includes a no-tag clause that opens free agency to him next offseason (@AdamSchefter).
- Thursday's preseason opener against the Raiders comes with a scouting note attached: Klint Kubiak said rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza will get plenty of experience against Arizona (@AdamSchefter).
- Tight end Nick Muse, who spent last season with the Cardinals among other stops, signed with Atlanta (@RapSheet).
Atlanta Falcons
- The quarterback evaluation is still live even with Michael Penix Jr. limited. Alex Van Pelt said he has seen enough from Penix during the early stretch of camp to keep evaluating him in the competition even if Penix is not cleared for 11-on-11 work until later this month (@tori_mcelhaney).
- Atlanta signed tight end Nick Muse and waived/injured receiver Le'Meke Brockington and linebacker Malik Verdon (@tori_mcelhaney, @RapSheet).
- The Falcons get the second look at Indianapolis' quarterback rotation: the Colts plan to flip the order of Anthony Richardson Sr. and Riley Leonard when the two teams meet (@RomeovilleKid).
Baltimore Ravens
- The usage note is the one to file: per Jeremy Fowler, Derrick Henry is set for a normal heavy workload this season, with Baltimore adding more perimeter designed runs and looking to involve him in the passing game (@UnderdogNFL).
- Cornerback Nate Wiggins was carted off about 45 minutes into practice after going down in the end zone covering Ja'Kobi Lane in one-on-ones, unable to put weight on his left leg (@jeffzrebiec, @jamisonhensley). The evening news was much better — testing showed no structural damage, and the expectation is that he is back sooner rather than later (@RapSheet, @jeffzrebiec).
- Zay Flowers returned to practice after missing just one day with a quad contusion (@jamisonhensley), and per the team's own report, defensive tackle Travis Jones passed his physical and came off the PUP list (@Ravens).
- Jeff Zrebiec's practice story had the Wiggins injury marring another strong day for the Baltimore defense, with the preseason opener Saturday night making this a significant week for the roster bubble (@jeffzrebiec, @jeffzrebiec).
Buffalo Bills
- Quiet day for Buffalo beat reporting, but Saturday's preseason opponent tipped its hand: Carolina's unofficial depth chart ahead of the game lists Metchie behind Jimmy Horn Jr., Etienne ahead of Dillon, and Wallace ahead of Cherelus in an unsettled LB2 competition (@Sheena_Marie3).
Carolina Panthers
- The unofficial depth chart ahead of Saturday's preseason game against Buffalo carries four things worth knowing: Metchie is listed behind Jimmy Horn Jr., Etienne remains ahead of Dillon, JT Sanders is the third tight end, and Wallace is listed ahead of Cherelus in the LB2 battle (@Sheena_Marie3).
- Color from the team feed as camp wound toward the opener (@Panthers).
Chicago Bears
- Safety Coby Bryant had knee surgery Friday and will miss four to six months, a far longer absence than the initial eight-to-10-week timeline (@AdamSchefter, @CourtneyRCronin).
- Chicago's first unofficial depth chart ahead of the Browns game is out, with players on PUP absent because they are not on the active roster (@CourtneyRCronin, @kfishbain).
- Xavier Woods now pairs with Dillon Thieneman at safety, which keeps an experienced starter on the field but does not replace what Bryant was last season (@jacobinfante24).
- Adam Hoge and Adam Jahns also reacted to what they called surprising injury news on Ozzy Trapilo, with a fuller recap of the day's scrimmage to follow (@AdamHoge).
Cincinnati Bengals
- Rep allocation up front: with Ted Karras joining the veterans getting rest, Connor Lew took center snaps with the first-team offense (@ByJayMorrison, @Trags).
- Josh Newton broke up a red-zone pass in the end zone intended for Ja'Marr Chase during the same period (@Trags).
- Per the team's own feature, rookie cornerback Tacario Davis has put together a strong camp (@Bengals).
Cleveland Browns
- The first unofficial depth chart lists "Deshaun Watson or Shedeur Sanders" at quarterback, and Todd Monken said he is not ready to name a starter for Saturday's game against the Bears (@MaryKayCabot, @DanielOyefusi).
- Rookies KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston are listed as starting receivers alongside Jerry Jeudy, with Spencer Fano holding the starting left tackle job and Teven Jenkins ahead of KT Leveston at right guard (@DanielOyefusi).
- Watson threw his ninth interception in 12 practices (@MaryKayCabot), while Sanders worked the seven-on-seven period with the starting skill group — a habit Monken has made of giving the quarterback not scheduled with the ones a session with them (@DanielOyefusi).
- Scott Petrak's notes column carried Monken owning up to getting emotionally hijacked during an ugly finish to Monday's practice, alongside a punter competition and the ongoing Jared Verse and Fano matchup (@ScottPetrak).
Dallas Cowboys
- The Cowboys' first unofficial depth chart is out (@jonmachota), landing the same day the rebuilt defense controlled the joint practice with the Rams.
- Justin Barron's three interceptions were the day's headline individual line, two off Stetson Bennett and one off Matthew Stafford (@UnderdogNFL).
- Dak Prescott's day improved as it went: a slant to Ryan Flournoy for a big gain, two touchdown passes and a red-zone interception on a throw to George Pickens in the third period (@jonmachota), with Tommy Yarrish's wrap crediting him with four touchdowns in the red-zone work (@tommy_yarrish).
- Backfield and backup notes: Jaydon Blue fumbled early, Joe Milton worked with the twos and was intercepted on a rollout (@jonmachota, @jonmachota).
Denver Broncos
- Quiet day for Denver camp reporting. The team's news was a uniform announcement: the Broncos and Seahawks will wear throwbacks for their Week 6 Thursday night meeting (@Broncos, @AdamSchefter).
- Denver plans to bring the throwbacks back out in Week 18 as well (@Broncos).
Detroit Lions
- Former Lions first-round cornerback Terrion Arnold is drawing heavy interest on the open market. He visits the Giants on Wednesday after seeing the Texans, Seahawks and Saints, with more teams wanting to bring him in (@Schultz_Report).
- Tight end Nick Muse, who had just been with Detroit, signed with Atlanta (@RapSheet).
Green Bay Packers
- Schefter reported that potential discipline is looming over a group of NFL players that includes Packers running back Josh Jacobs and Rams receiver Puka Nacua (@AdamSchefter). No further detail accompanied the report, and it is worth tracking rather than acting on.
- Cornerback remains the most unsettled job in Green Bay's camp. Bill Huber called it the wildest position battle of the summer and reported more movement on Monday (@BillHuberNFL).
Houston Texans
- The biggest play of Houston's camp so far came on Tuesday: C.J. Stroud and David Montgomery connected for an 80-yard touchdown (@Djbienaime). A back producing a play like that out of the passing game is the kind of detail that shapes a receiving projection.
- Keylan Rutledge and Will Anderson Jr. got into it during practice, which Jonathan Alexander noted is rare for Anderson (@jonmalexander).
- Houston is among the teams that have already given Terrion Arnold a visit (@Schultz_Report).
Indianapolis Colts
- The preseason plan is set and it excludes the starter: Anthony Richardson Sr. starts the first half against the Patriots on Thursday and Riley Leonard takes the second, with the order flipping against Atlanta, and Shane Steichen saying Daniel Jones will not play in the preseason (@RomeovilleKid).
- Jones was sharp anyway at the joint practice with New England, closing the two-minute drill with a touchdown to Josh Downs; Tyler Warren was excellent, and Cam Bynum intercepted Drake Maye (@RomeovilleKid).
- The red-zone seven-on-sevens belonged to Indianapolis. Jones, Leonard and Richardson combined for six touchdowns, and the Patriots defense allowed 11 straight completions before Marcellas Dial broke up the last pass (@_AndrewCallahan).
- Mike Reiss counted 24 valuable first-team reps for both sides in a controlled, competitive environment (@MikeReiss).
Jacksonville Jaguars
- Jacksonville released its unofficial depth chart (@ryanohalloran).
- Otherwise a quiet day in Jaguars camp, with the team feed handling the day's content (@Jaguars).
Kansas City Chiefs
- The Chiefs added pass-rush depth on a reunion deal: free-agent defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah signed a one-year contract, having won a Super Bowl in Kansas City in 2020 (@AdamSchefter).
- Kansas City's preseason opener is four days out, and the team feed spent the day counting down to it (@Chiefs).
Las Vegas Raiders
- Klint Kubiak said the starters will play in Thursday's preseason opener against Arizona and that the staff has a plan for how much the ones, twos and threes see (@samwarren83, @Raiders).
- Rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza is the one to watch in it. Per ESPN's story from Ryan McFadden, Kubiak said Mendoza will get plenty of reps and is expected to work behind some first-team offensive linemen — though Kirk Cousins remains the named starter, and Mendoza has taken most of his camp work with the second team (@AdamSchefter). ESPN reports Mendoza's only first-team reps came Saturday, when Cousins was held out following an altercation with Maxx Crosby, and that Crosby's own availability for Thursday is still being evaluated.
- Levi Edwards' watch list for the opener includes Malik Benson pushing for an elevated role, Caleb Rogers competing for the starting right guard job and Matt Gay in the driver's seat at kicker (@theleviedwards).
Los Angeles Chargers
- Quiet day for Chargers beat reporting. The one piece of material was a Tre Harris highlight grab that made the rounds (@UnderdogNFL, @chargers).
Los Angeles Rams
- Puka Nacua left practice walking with a trainer, and Ian Rapoport reported it is minor groin soreness with the team being cautious (@RapSheet). Separately, Schefter listed Nacua among players facing potential discipline, without further detail (@AdamSchefter).
- The joint practice with Dallas did not go the Rams' way. Matthew Stafford struggled against the coverage Christian Parker was calling and was intercepted once, Stetson Bennett was picked twice, and Blake Corum had a counter blown up behind the line by Dee Winters (@VoiceOfTheStar, @VoiceOfTheStar, @UnderdogNFL).
- Nate Atkins' defensive-side observations from the same practice had the Rams' pass rushers standing out without Myles Garrett and the secondary getting more versatile (@NateAtkins_).
- George Pickens, now on the other sideline, was unbothered by what the Rams added on defense (@UnderdogNFL).
Miami Dolphins
- Jeff Hafley's workload promise for De'Von Achane is the headline (see the top five), and the framing to keep is the conditioning warning behind it rather than the literal touch number (@AdamSchefter, @UnderdogNFL).
- Miami's first depth chart is out (@DavidFurones_), and David Furones' takeaways center on starting competitions at linebacker and defensive tackle (@DavidFurones_).
Minnesota Vikings
- Kyler Murray is the starting quarterback, announced Tuesday by Kevin O'Connell after Schefter broke it (see the top five) (@AdamSchefter, @Vikings).
- The reps that followed the announcement are the fantasy-relevant part: Murray's first dropback as the official QB1 was a 20-yard completion to Justin Jefferson, and he followed with one of his cleanest practices of camp, hitting Jefferson, Jordan Addison and Felton for chunk gains (@WillRagatz, @WillRagatz).
- J.J. McCarthy moves to backup after ten career starts (@AdamSchefter), and Matthew Coller's piece from earlier in the day argued for a more measured read of the competition than the one that had taken hold after the night practice (@MatthewColler).
New England Patriots
- Drake Maye threw four touchdown passes in red-zone drills at the joint practice with Indianapolis, spreading the ball to 10 different receivers (@ByMarkDaniels). A practice in which Maye spreads it to 10 different targets argues against assuming a narrow touchdown funnel in New England.
- The defense had the harder day, allowing 11 straight completions in red-zone seven-on-sevens before Marcellas Dial broke it up (@_AndrewCallahan), and Mike Reiss noted the top units did not finish strong in the two-minute drill (@MikeReiss).
- A.J. Brown shaking Sauce Gardner on the first one-on-one rep was the moment that got the crowd going (@MikeReiss, @UnderdogNFL).
- Reiss also reported Maye is not expected to play in Thursday's preseason opener, with the focus on the Colts practice instead, that the top three outside cornerbacks did not practice, and that Rhamondre Stevenson has been used as a pass-catching weapon (@MikeReiss).
New Orleans Saints
- Per ESPN's story from Katherine Terrell, Kellen Moore said defensive end Cameron Jordan will miss a little time with a hamstring injury and that it could possibly get into the season, with the situation being reevaluated every few days (@AdamSchefter). ESPN notes Moore is comfortable with the edge depth behind him.
- Nick Underhill's advice on the camp overreactions was to wait until the team faces another opponent, with one exception he was willing to commit to: Jordyn Tyson has been outstanding (@nick_underhill).
- New Orleans released its depth chart (@nick_underhill), hosted Terrion Arnold on a visit (@Schultz_Report), and posted a Tyler Shough-to-Chris Olave connection from practice (@Saints).
New York Giants
- Malik Nabers continues working his way back through individual drills, and made what Charlotte Carroll called the most acrobatic grab she has seen from him this camp (@charlottecrrll).
- The safety rotation is the usage story. Dan Duggan noted another day of Tyler Nubin not taking all the first-team reps, with Ar'Darius Washington getting most of the work next to Jevon Holland and Jason Pinnock rotating in (@DDuggan21).
- Arvell Reese intercepted Jaxson Dart in a red-zone seven-on-seven period that Duggan described as a rough one for the offense (@DDuggan21).
- New York hosts Terrion Arnold on a visit Wednesday (@Schultz_Report).
New York Jets
- Cornerback Qwan'tez Stiggers collapsed during a special teams period at the joint practice with Tampa Bay and was taken to a hospital by ambulance (@AdamSchefter). He was released that evening and is recovering at home (@nyjets). Per ESPN's story, Aaron Glenn said Stiggers was conscious and able to speak.
- Edge rusher David Bailey was the best player on the field, per Zack Blatt, who wrote that in five seasons covering the Jets he is not sure he has seen a camp like the one Bailey is putting together (@UnderdogNFL). Bailey and Luke Goedeke traded swings after Goedeke kept jumping early on their reps (@ZackBlatt).
- The practice produced three fights and two Geno Smith interceptions (@UnderdogNFL, @ZackBlatt). Breece Hall's approach to the scuffles, via Brian Costello: he has a rule about not getting involved with anyone over 240 pounds (@UnderdogNFL).
- Aaron Glenn said the starters play Friday night against Tampa Bay — everybody's playing (@RichCimini).
Philadelphia Eagles
- Jalen Carter said he dropped 10 pounds this offseason by cutting out juice and what he called big daddy meals, a target Vic Fangio set for him that the two celebrated when he reported to camp (@EJSmith94).
- Jalen Hurts on rookie receiver Darius Cooper: he thinks Cooper is pretty good already (@Jeff_McLane).
- Per Jimmy Kempski's camp battle tracker at PhillyVoice, Dontayvion Wicks has separated in the receiver competition on consistency, and Jalyx Hunt is tracking as the starting edge (@JimmyKempski).
- Fangio on cornerback Quinyon Mitchell, via Arye Pulli: he still needs his first regular-season interception, though he is quick to remind people he has four in the playoffs (@UnderdogNFL).
Pittsburgh Steelers
- Quiet day in Steelers camp — the only material on the wire was a team-feed clip featuring Jack Sawyer (@steelers).
San Francisco 49ers
- Brock Purdy led Nick Wagoner's notes from the joint practice with Tennessee with an excellent day, alongside the continued ascent of De'Zhaun Stribling and steady work from Demarcus Robinson (@nwagoner).
- The defense had the opposite morning. Matt Maiocco called the start embarrassing — no plays made, and scuffles instigated after nearly every whistle (@MaioccoNBCS).
- Four fights broke out inside the first 10 minutes of the scrimmage portion (@LombardiHimself, @UnderdogNFL).
- Per Maiocco's piece at NBC Sports Bay Area, left guard is genuinely open: Connor Colby opened camp as the starter and Robert Jones has since taken more first-team snaps, with fourth-rounder Carver Willis behind both (@MaioccoNBCS).
Seattle Seahawks
- The usage rundown from Jeremy Fowler is the most useful Seattle item in weeks: the running back rotation will feature two or three backs in the game plan per the head coach, Jaxon Smith-Njigba's heavy workload should continue, and Rashid Shaheed should be a major factor alongside Cooper Kupp and Tory Horton. Julian Love compared rookie Jadarian Price's burst to a prime Dalvin Cook (@UnderdogNFL).
- Per the team's own report, safety Nick Emmanwori passed his physical (@Seahawks); tight end Robbie Ouzts is headed to season-ending injured reserve (@BradyHenderson).
- Seattle worked out Terrion Arnold earlier in the week, a session that aired on Hard Knocks (@Schultz_Report).
- The Seahawks and Broncos will both wear throwbacks when they meet in Week 6 (@Seahawks, @Broncos).
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- The Bucs' first unofficial depth chart of 2026 has Jacob Parrish as a starting outside cornerback, SirVocea Dennis still listed as a starting linebacker and Rueben Bain as the only rookie starter (@gregauman).
- The joint practice with the Jets was chippy — three fights, and two interceptions off Geno Smith (@UnderdogNFL). Jets edge rusher David Bailey was the standout on the day (@UnderdogNFL).
- The Jets plan to play their starters when the two teams meet Friday night (@RichCimini).
Tennessee Titans
- Cameron Ward was mic'd up for the Blue and White Scrimmage, and the team's release of it doubled as a reminder of who has the job (@Titans).
- The joint practice at San Francisco got heated fast: four fights inside the first 10 minutes of scrimmage work (@LombardiHimself, @UnderdogNFL).
- A small piece of gamesmanship that made the rounds: the 49ers had the Titans warming up on the field closest to the substation (@UnderdogNFL).
Washington Commanders
- Laremy Tunsil will return to Ashburn for his post-surgery treatment so he can be around the team, per Andrew Wylie, which keeps him available to the young offensive linemen he has been tutoring (@john_keim).
- Brandon Coleman, who replaces Tunsil, said he wishes he had trained the way he does now earlier in his career and thinks it could have prevented some injuries (@john_keim).
- John Keim's radio segment covered Stefon Diggs, the concussion Reaves sustained from him, and what joint practices actually reveal (@john_keim).

Cleveland Browns Quarterback Battle: How to Read the Reps
Cleveland's first unofficial depth chart of the year listed its quarterback as "Deshaun Watson or Shedeur Sanders," and Todd Monken said plainly that he was not ready to name a starter for Saturday's game against Chicago (@MaryKayCabot). That is a real answer, not a dodge, and the day's rep pattern explains why reading it takes some care.
Start with what looks like evidence and is not. Daniel Oyefusi reported Sanders working the seven-on-seven period with the first-team skill players, and added the context that makes the rep less meaningful than it sounds: Monken has made a habit of giving the quarterback not scheduled to work with the ones a seven-on-seven session with the starters (@DanielOyefusi). In other words, that particular rep is scheduled compensation, not promotion. The same trap ran the other direction earlier in camp, when Watson got a run with the ones specifically because Sanders had been getting more of them. Snap counts in Cleveland have been a balancing exercise, and treating any single day's alignment as a depth-chart signal is how readers end up whipsawed.
What does carry signal is accumulation. Mary Kay Cabot logged Watson's ninth interception in 12 practices (@MaryKayCabot) — that is a rate, not a bad day, and rates are what coaching staffs actually grade. The other genuine signal is the exhibition split Scott Petrak reported: Watson and Sanders will each start one of the first two preseason games (@ScottPetrak). A staff that had already settled on a starter would not need to split the first two starts between them.
What would have to change: the thing to watch Saturday is not which quarterback trots out first — that is already spoken for by the rotation. It is who is on the field for the second and third first-team series, and whether rookie receivers KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston, both listed as starters alongside Jerry Jeudy (@DanielOyefusi), stay out there when the quarterback changes.
How we would read it from here: our projections hold both Cleveland quarterbacks in a wide band and keep the receiving corps priced off volume rather than efficiency, because an unsettled quarterback room in mid-August usually resolves on live-game evidence rather than practice reps — and the two live games that produce that evidence have not been played yet. For where the rookies sit against the rest of the position, our fantasy WR1 board carries the full picture.
