1. Jahmyr Gibbs Is Now the Highest-Paid Running Back in NFL History

Detroit closed the biggest running back week in league history. The Lions and three-time Pro Bowl back Jahmyr Gibbs agreed to a three-year, $67.5 million extension that can reach $75.75 million with $51.5 million of it locked in (@AdamSchefter). Ian Rapoport put the record in its exact terms: the highest average per year and the largest locked-in sum ever committed to a running back (@RapSheet). Jordan Schultz had reported substantial progress that morning with Gibbs set to return to practice once it was signed (@Schultz_Report), and Tim Twentyman had him in uniform taking walkthrough reps hours before it landed (@ttwentyman). 2. Football Is Back, and Carson Beck Owned the Night in Canton

The 2026 preseason opened with the Hall of Fame Game, and a rookie third-round quarterback took it over. Cardinals rookie Carson Beck finished 15-of-19 for 188 yards and a touchdown (@AdamSchefter), with PFF logging the same line at zero interceptions (@PFF); PFF had him at a 141.0 rating through 10-of-12 while the game was still going (@PFF). 3. Jonathan Taylor Gets the Largest Third Contract Ever Given to a Running Back

Hours before the Gibbs news, Indianapolis moved first. The Colts and Jonathan Taylor agreed to a two-year, $44 million extension worth up to $47 million with $39 million locked in (@AdamSchefter), which Rapoport called the largest third contract for a running back in league history (@RapSheet); across the full $60 million the deal averages $19 million a year, another record (@RapSheet). Taylor signed it that afternoon (@AdamSchefter) and announced it himself at Grand Park alongside owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon, telling the crowd at night practice that everyone in attendance was getting a free beer (@Schultz_Report). 4. A.J. Brown and Christian Gonzalez Nearly Had to Be Separated in Foxborough

The best practice-field story of the day came out of New England, where the reps between cornerback Christian Gonzalez and receiver A.J. Brown boiled over. Mike Reiss described real heat on the field, sparked by Gonzalez's trash talk after a stretch of lockdown coverage, with the two looking like they almost needed separating as the drill changed (@MikeReiss). Mark Daniels reported that Kayshon Boutte had to pull Brown away from Gonzalez (@ByMarkDaniels). 5. Saints Receiver Brock Rechsteiner Suspended for Six Games

New Orleans will open the season without one of its wideouts. Saints receiver Brock Rechsteiner has been suspended for the first six games of the 2026 season (@AdamSchefter). The timing detail matters for anyone reading August depth charts: he remains eligible for all preseason activities, including games, and the suspension only takes effect when rosters are cut to 53 (@AdamSchefter). • One name to file: Adam Schefter reports that Jonah Coleman has turned heads at Broncos camp (@UnderdogNFL). A roster-bubble name drawing a national mention in the first week of August is worth a note now and a second look at cutdowns.

Detroit Lions

• Jahmyr Gibbs is the NFL's highest-paid running back (full story above), and he was suited up and taking walkthrough reps before the deal was announced (@DetroitOnLion).

Las Vegas Raiders

• Rookie cornerback Jermod McCoy's first absence of camp was planned, not a setback. Minnesota Vikings

• Not everyone is treating it as a competition. Easton Freeze's "wake me when the Vikings stop pretending" post (@eastonfreeze) links his A-to-Z Sports case that the job is already Kyler Murray's: the piece argues Minnesota effectively assured Murray the role in free agency, that J.J. • What we are watching in Foxborough from here: whether the staff keeps matching Gonzalez on Brown in camp one-on-ones — the best receiver-versus-corner rep on the roster, chippiness included. New Orleans Saints

Tennessee Titans

Arizona Cardinals Quarterback Battle: How to Read the Reps

One preseason quarter turned a third-round rookie into a national conversation, so this is the right morning to say what those reps are worth. Carson Beck finished the Hall of Fame Game 15-of-19 for 188 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions (@AdamSchefter), including a 96-to-99-yard march, depending on which beat you follow, that ended in a one-yard touchdown run (@JohnnyVenerable, @Cardschatter). Johnny Venerable's mid-game read was that it will not be long before Beck starts in Arizona (@JohnnyVenerable), and PFF spent the night polling the same question (@PFF).

Two facts have to sit next to that line. The first is the opponent: Joseph Person, who covers the other sideline, wrote that Carolina's second-team defense was making Beck look like a future Hall of Famer (@josephperson). The Hall of Fame Game is the only night of the year when a passer can face a defense that will be largely out of the league by September. The second is the depth chart. Per the Cardinals' own feature on Beck, he entered as a third-round pick assigned No. 19 after hoping for No. 11, and he watched Gardner Minshew II take the first-unit reps through the spring while Jacoby Brissett stayed off the practice field over his contract situation. Nothing about Thursday night changed the order of that room.

The two scenarios: If Beck's accuracy holds against starters in the next two preseason games, Arizona has a real decision by Week 1 and every Cardinals pass-catcher's projection gets a new input. If it collapses against first-team speed, the night reads as a rookie beating up on players who will be cut, and the depth chart stands.

How to read it from here: the reps that matter are the ones against defenses that still have their starters on the field, which for most teams means the second and third preseason games and next week's joint practices. Beck's completion rate is the least interesting number in that line — the useful one is that he did not turn it over while operating a real two-minute-adjacent drive, because ball security against pressure is the thing rookie quarterbacks actually lose jobs over. Our projections still have Arizona's Week 1 starter as an open question rather than a settled one, and the honest fantasy move is to price Trey McBride and the Cardinals' pass-catchers off the offense rather than off any single quarterback until the reps come against real defenses.
