1. Laremy Tunsil Tore His Triceps in a One-on-One Drill

Washington lost its best offensive lineman to a pass-rush rep. Mike Garafolo and Steve Wyche reported that five-time Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil suffered a torn triceps during Saturday's one-on-one pass-rush period, that surgery is likely, and that he will miss at least a significant portion of the regular season (@MikeGarafolo). Ben Standig reported the same injury as potentially season-ending, with surgery expected (@BenStandig), and Nicki Jhabvala carried it the same way (@NickiJhabvala). Adam Schefter's early read was that the team was still gathering information but that the absence would be long (@AdamSchefter), and John Keim's story at ESPN has the full timeline (@AdamSchefter).

The replacement plan is already reportable, and it is the part that decides how much this actually costs. Keim wrote that a surgical timeline could run four to six months, possibly seven, and that Brandon Coleman is a strong option to slide outside to left tackle — Coleman has started 15 games there over the last two seasons and had been competing with Chris Paul at left guard (@john_keim). Moving Coleman outside would not close the hole so much as move it: the edge steadies only if Chris Paul or one of the new veterans holds up at left guard, so Washington gets graded at two spots instead of one.

What to watch in Ashburn: whether Brandon Coleman takes the first-team left tackle reps at the next practice. If he does, the follow-on question is who wins left guard — and Washington's interior gets graded twice.

Timing sharpens it. Hours before the injury, Washington had already signed center Daniel Brunskill, tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere and guard Max Scharping while releasing receiver Chris Hilton Jr. and guard Timothy McKay (@AdamSchefter). Those veterans were depth on Saturday morning and are competing for real snaps by Sunday. Jayden Daniels' blindside is the variable our projections care about here, and it is the one that just got less certain.

2. Luther Burden III Left Bears Practice Early

Chicago's second-year receiver exited practice No. 9 with what Courtney Cronin reported at ESPN as an apparent lower-body injury (@AdamSchefter). The mechanism was mundane and that is the good news: Cronin had Burden and cornerback Tyrique Stevenson tangling on their final one-on-one rep and both falling awkwardly, with Stevenson able to stay at practice after a trainer worked on him (@CourtneyRCronin). Underdog's account of the same rep had Burden walking off with a trainer after landing awkwardly (@UnderdogNFL).

No severity was attached to it Saturday, and defensive back Cam Lewis exited the same practice (@CourtneyRCronin). Until the Bears put a name to the injury, this is a monitor rather than a move — but Burden's route running was the clip of the day in the August 8 edition, and a heavy red-zone practice is exactly the session a young target-earner wants to be on the field for.

3. Zay Flowers Went Down, Then Got the Best Available News

Baltimore's top receiver collided with safety Jaylinn Hawkins in a seven-on-seven period, stayed down grabbing his left leg, and limped back inside with about an hour left in practice (@jamisonhensley). Head coach Jesse Minter said afterward that Flowers has a quad contusion and is day to day (@AdamSchefter, @Ravens).

Jeff Zrebiec's notebook at The Athletic frames it as the best-case outcome for a receiver Baltimore just made a $140 million commitment to, and notes the Ravens have been mostly healthy through two weeks (@jeffzrebiec). Zrebiec's live read matched — a lot of pain on the ground, early hope that it was only a contusion (@jeffzrebiec).

Day-to-day in the second week of August usually means missed practice reps rather than missed games, and the Ravens open the preseason against Philadelphia a week out (@jeffzrebiec). We would treat this as a reps story, not a draft-board story, unless the label changes.

4. Kirk Cousins and Maxx Crosby Were Held Out for Fighting

Klint Kubiak sat his starting quarterback and his best defensive player. The Raiders head coach told reporters Cousins and Crosby were held out of Saturday's practice for violating team rules by fighting on Friday (@AdamSchefter, @UnderdogNFL). Ryan McFadden carried Kubiak's fuller version — very clear expectations for how the team practices and goes about its business, violated on Friday — and reported Kubiak saying both players will participate Monday (@ryanmcfadden_, amplified by @RapSheet). Mike Garafolo read it as a new head coach setting a standard on his quarterback and his franchise player at once (@MikeGarafolo).

The reps it created are the fantasy-relevant part. With Cousins out of team periods, Fernando Mendoza took his first first-team snaps as a Raider, started slow, improved as practice went on, and finished with touchdowns in the red-zone and goal-line work (@samwarren83). A one-day discipline absence is not a depth-chart change, and Kubiak said both veterans participate Monday (@ryanmcfadden_). What it is: the first real look at what the Las Vegas offense sounds like with the rookie running it, banked for the day that question stops being an if.

5. Lane Johnson Said This Is Likely His Last Season

Philadelphia's right tackle put a clock on his career. Johnson announced Saturday that 2026 will probably be his final NFL season, framing it as looking that way rather than as a decision (@Jeff_McLane), and Tim McManus' story at ESPN has him entering the year with a farewell mindset after rejoining the team following four missed practices for personal reasons (@AdamSchefter). Ian Rapoport had him opening up about a retirement that likely lands in 2027 (@RapSheet), and the team's account posted its support the same afternoon (@Eagles).

Nothing about Johnson's 2026 availability changed Saturday, and that is the reason this sits at No. 5 rather than higher. It does change how Philadelphia's right side reads over the next two Augusts, and it is the second offensive tackle story of the day — the first one cost a team its starter outright.

Person's piece places King behind Bryce Young and Kenny Pickett on the official depth chart, with Carolina's final exhibition against Houston on Aug. 28, two days before cuts.

• Denver signed defensive back Ricardo Hallman and receiver Kyrese Rowan, placing defensive end Matt Henningsen on injured reserve after a Friday practice injury and releasing defensive back Sam Webb in the corresponding moves (@Broncos). Per the team's release, Hallman started 38 straight games at Wisconsin and Rowan spent time on Denver's practice squad last year after catching 44 passes for 526 yards at Utah State in 2024.

Detroit Lions

• A quiet day on the Lions wire — the only Detroit item to clear our filters was the team's own clip of a Jared Goff throw to Amon-Ra St. Brown (@Lions).

Green Bay Packers

• Aaron Rodgers will hold a Zoom with Packers media on Wednesday, the day before the Packers play Pittsburgh on Thursday (@mattschneidman).
• Matt Schneidman's write-up of the Friday night practice inside Lambeau covers Smack's efficient night in the kicking game, the one-on-one highlights, the notable eleven-on-eleven plays and a lengthy did-not-practice list (@mattschneidman).

Houston Texans

• Newsome's exit looked worse than it was — a non-contact knee injury that had him hobbling off with the general manager joining the trainers, then checking out clean (@DDuggan21, @JordanRaanan).

New York Jets

• Scrimmage day opened with the starting offense at its best: a four-play, 65-yard drive that ended on a 36-yard touchdown to Isaiah Williams off a deflection, with Geno Smith 3-of-3 passing (@Connor_J_Hughes). Connor Hughes notes Williams has had a strong camp.

Philadelphia Eagles

San Francisco 49ers

• Kyle Shanahan, limited through camp because of the concussion he suffered in a July 14 car accident, told reporters he plans to coach next week's preseason opener against Tennessee (@AdamSchefter, @mattbarrows).
• The beat called it the best and longest practice of camp, with intense timed end-of-game red-zone work: Brock Purdy hit Farrell for a fourth-down touchdown on the first try and threw an interception to Lenoir on the second, and De'Zhaun Stribling was back and looking natural (@LombardiHimself).

Seattle Seahawks

• The Seahawks held their annual practice at Lumen Field, and safety A.J. Finley — who tore his ACL at the same event last year — intercepted Sam Darnold while competing for a roster spot (@BradyHenderson, @Seahawks).

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

• Former Buccaneers quarterback Kyle Trask is expected to sign with Carolina after Haynes King's hamstring injury, reuniting him with Dave Canales (@mike_e_kaye).

Tennessee Titans

• Tennessee will get the full San Francisco staff in next week's preseason opener: Kyle Shanahan says he plans to coach the game despite being limited through camp with a concussion (@AdamSchefter).

Washington Commanders

Cleveland Browns Quarterback Battle: How to Read the Reps

The Browns said one thing before practice and did another during it, and that gap is the most useful piece of information this competition has produced.

Todd Monken told reporters in the morning that Shedeur Sanders would take a majority of the reps with the No. 1 offense — Saturday was Sanders' day in the alternating rotation — with the possible exception of a seven-on-seven period in which Deshaun Watson would go first (@DanielOyefusi). What happened instead: Watson took the first snap of eleven-on-elevens, a pass to Harold Fannin Jr. (@MaryKayCabot), and by the end of practice he had taken all of the first-team reps in team periods (@AshleyBastock42, @DanielOyefusi). A team spokesman told Mary Kay Cabot there were personnel groupings Monken wanted to see Watson with (@MaryKayCabot), and Cabot's follow-up asks the question directly — has Watson moved ahead, on a day when he got all the first-team reps and made the most of them (@MaryKayCabot)?

The second detail is the one that changes the shape of this. Sanders did not simply lose the first team — he split what was left with Dillon Gabriel, which is why the beat wondered aloud whether Sanders has been dropped to QB3 (@RuiterWrongFAN). A rotation designed to bank even reps for two quarterbacks does not usually produce a day where one of them works behind a third.

What would have to change: Monken said a starter for the preseason opener against Chicago will be named by Monday (@ScottPetrak). If Sanders gets that assignment, Saturday reads as the personnel-grouping explanation the team gave. If Watson does, the alternating rotation is effectively over and the rest of camp is a starter taking starter reps.

How to read it from here: a preseason-opener nod is a genuine tell in this specific case, because Cleveland has said it will name one. Reps still beat quotes — the reason to weight Saturday heavily is that the reps contradicted the quote rather than confirmed it. Our projections keep the Cleveland passing game in a wide band until the announcement lands, and Harold Fannin Jr. — the target on the first snap Watson took Saturday — is the pass-catcher whose August price is most directly tied to which name it is.
