Yesterday's Five Biggest Stories

1. Dallas Paid Quinnen Williams Before Anyone Had to Ask

The Cowboys turned last year's trade-deadline swing into a long-term contract on Monday afternoon. Ian Rapoport reported the deal first — three years and $105.9 million in new money, the largest third contract ever signed by a defensive lineman (@RapSheet) — and put the full picture at five years and $153.15 million (@RapSheet). Adam Schefter's terms sheet carried the structure that makes it unusual: $101 million of it locked in, with $63.35 million of that fully locked at signing, which his post framed as the most money ever locked in at signing for a defensive tackle (@AdamSchefter). Per ESPN's story, the signing bonus alone is $31.85 million and the $35.3 million average annual value is the second-highest at the position, behind only Jalen Carter (@AdamSchefter).

The context is what makes the number make sense. Per the Cowboys' own release, Dallas sent the Jets a 2026 second-round pick, a 2027 first-rounder and Mazi Smith for Williams at the 2025 deadline, and he is now under contract through 2030 (@dallascowboys). ESPN credits him with 1.5 sacks and 33 quarterback pressures in seven games after the trade. Stephen Jones told Jon Machota that Williams is one of the hardest practicing players on the field and added, "He's the best player on the field whenever he's out there" (@jonmachota). Pro Football Focus posted its own supporting math: by its grades, Williams has finished top-five among interior defensive linemen in three of the last four seasons (@PFF).

Todd Archer put the move in a pattern — Dallas has now extended Jake Ferguson, DaRon Bland, Tyler Smith, Brandon Aubrey and Hunter Luepke inside a year, and Williams still had two years left on his deal (@toddarcher). Patrik Walker's cap read is the piece worth filing: depending on structure, the extension could free roughly $15.5 million in 2026 and $19.2 million in 2027 (@VoiceOfTheStar).

What to watch in Oxnard: the joint practice with the Rams, which Dallas holds Tuesday (@camdasilva). A defensive tackle extension does not move a fantasy board by itself, but a Cowboys front that keeps its best interior rusher through 2030 is the reason Dallas' defensive projection has a floor — and the joint work is the first look at it against another team's starters.

2. Cleveland Promoted Two Rookies to the First-Team Offense

The Browns made two changes on Monday and both of them came from the top of their draft class. Todd Monken said left tackle Spencer Fano and receiver Denzel Boston would begin working with the ones that day (@camijustice), with Fano moving ahead of Dawand Jones (@MaryKayCabot). Daryl Ruiter reported that the plan for Fano had been in motion and that refusing to back down from Jared Verse during Saturday's skirmish "solidified it" (@RuiterWrongFAN). Zac Jackson called them the day's two firm changes (@AkronJackson).

Per Tony Grossi's day-11 report at The Land On Demand, the coaching staff reassessed things on the players' day off Sunday and decided both rookies — the ninth and 39th overall picks — had earned it, and that for now both will work exclusively with the No. 1 offense (@TonyGrossi). Monken's line on the tackle job was that Fano is simply playing better at this point, and Grossi reports Jones will keep competing as the third tackle and remains an option at right tackle if Cleveland moves Tytus Howard inside to guard.

The quarterback job did not move with it. Shedeur Sanders took the first-team reps Monday, and Monken explained the Saturday switch as a rep-count correction — Sanders had been getting more work with the ones than Deshaun Watson, so Watson got the looks (@camijustice, @DanielOyefusi). Scott Petrak reported the resolution for the exhibition schedule: Watson and Sanders will each start one of the first two preseason games (@ScottPetrak). Asked directly whether he had said Watson was better than Sanders, Monken said he had not gone that far (@UnderdogNFL).

3. Detroit Lost Its Starting Center for Two Months

The Lions spent the offseason rebuilding the interior of their offensive line, and Monday cost them the middle of it. Adam Schefter reported that center Cade Mays suffered a wrist injury that Dan Campbell called significant (@AdamSchefter), and Rapoport put a number on it — a fractured small bone, roughly eight to 10 weeks, which should have Mays back by midseason (@RapSheet). Justin Rogers framed the timing plainly: the plans Detroit built its offseason around took the blow (@Justin_Rogers).

The replacement plan is already in motion. With Juice Scruggs still nursing a soft-tissue injury for a few more days, Campbell said Seth McLaughlin was likely to take the first-team center reps Monday (@DetroitOnLion). That is the rep to track, because an interior line that changes twice inside a week changes the run-game math behind it.

The backfield news was better. Isiah Pacheco sprained his MCL, and per ESPN's story, Campbell said he expects Pacheco back before Detroit's Week 1 home game (@AdamSchefter, @AdamSchefter). A sprain with an in-window return is a preseason story rather than a season story — but it is the second straight morning Detroit's backfield and line have both been on the injury sheet.

What to watch in Allen Park: who is snapping the ball when Scruggs is cleared. Detroit has two candidates for one job and roughly two months before Mays is an option again, so the center reps over the next two weeks are the only evidence the staff gets — and an offense that runs as much play-action as this one asks a lot of the man making the line calls.

4. Luther Burden III's Timeline Firmed Up, and Chicago Went Shopping

The Bears receiver's groin injury now has a shape. Schefter reported that Burden is expected to miss the preseason with the strain he suffered Saturday, and that Chicago believes he will be back for the regular-season opener against the Panthers (@AdamSchefter). That is a firmer version of the month-long estimate the August 10 edition carried, and it lands in the same place: an August without reps, a Week 1 that still looks intact.

The second receiver scare eased. Courtney Cronin reported that Zavion Thomas, who left Sunday's seven-on-sevens holding his knee, is dealing with soreness and is likely day-to-day (@CourtneyRCronin), and Adam Hoge saw him moving without much of a limp at Monday's walkthrough, though he did not participate (@AdamHoge).

Chicago still added a body. The Bears signed veteran Ray-Ray McCloud III and waived/injured Kyron Hudson (@BradBiggs, @AdamSchefter). Per Jacob Infante's write-up at Windy City Gridiron, McCloud is entering his ninth season across six teams, led the NFL with 367 punt-return yards in 2021 and posted a career-best 62 catches for 686 yards in 2024 (@jacobinfante24). That is a return specialist and a roster-spot competitor, not a target-share threat.

5. New England Locked Up Hunter Henry and Moved On From a Tackle

The Patriots kept Drake Maye's most reliable target off the market. Rapoport reported a two-year extension for Hunter Henry that makes it likely the 31-year-old finishes his career in New England (@RapSheet), and Schefter's terms have it at two years and $16 million, worth up to $20 million, with $14.5 million locked in and a $4.2 million signing bonus (@AdamSchefter).

The production behind it is the part that matters for a draft board. Rapoport noted Henry is on his third contract with the franchise — a rarity — after his most productive season yet, 768 receiving yards and seven touchdowns (@RapSheet). Mike Reiss added the durability line: Henry has logged 40-plus receptions in all five of his Patriots seasons, the second-longest such streak by a New England tight end behind Ben Coates (@MikeReiss).

The other move went the other way. New England had planned to release offensive tackle Caedan Wallace, its 2024 third-round pick, and Miami called before the transaction processed (@Schultz_Report, @Schultz_Report). The teams announced a trade instead: Wallace and a 2029 seventh-round pick to the Dolphins for a 2028 sixth (@RapSheet, @MikeReiss).

Arizona Cardinals

• Arizona's preseason opener has a scouting report attached to it: the Raiders released their first unofficial depth chart ahead of it, with Jackson Powers-Johnson holding a slight edge at right guard and Darien Porter ahead at corner opposite Eric Stokes, per Levi Edwards (@theleviedwards).
• Larry Fitzgerald's Ring of Honor date is set. The Cardinals will honor him at halftime of their October 25 game against Denver and retire his No. 11 (@AdamSchefter, @AZCardinals).

Atlanta Falcons

• The backfield added a veteran: Atlanta signed running back Trey Sermon (@AdamSchefter). • The Texans' unofficial depth chart lists Keylan Rutledge as the first-string center (@AaronWilson_NFL).
• Cornerback Terrion Arnold, who visited Houston earlier in his free-agent tour, has now met with Seattle and is set to meet the Saints. Garafolo notes that teams are also vetting the February incident that led to felony charges against him, which is the context every stop on this tour carries (@MikeGarafolo).

Indianapolis Colts

• Alec Pierce's summer is not close to over. James Boyd reported that Pierce received another PRP injection in his left ankle, his second of the offseason, after undergoing surgery on it in March (@RomeovilleKid).
• That leaves the receiver room where the August 10 edition found it — Pierce still without a practice this summer, and the third starting job open behind the top two.

Jacksonville Jaguars

• A roster battle is closing faster than it looks. Per John Shipley's piece at Jaguars On SI, veteran linebacker Jahlani Tavai — signed after Jack Kiser's injury — was already taking more prominent reps with the second defense on Sunday than seventh-round rookie Parker Hughes, who entered camp on the roster bubble (@_John_Shipley).
• Shipley reports defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile pointed to scheme familiarity as the reason: Tavai played in systems with similar tenets in Detroit and New England, making the transition easier than it is for a late-round rookie.

Kansas City Chiefs

• Kansas City's wire was thin on fantasy-relevant camp news Monday. The team feed carried a Patrick Mahomes connection with Cyrus Allen out of practice (@Chiefs).
• The Rams' preseason preview is the other place Kansas City turned up, ahead of the two teams' exhibition opener (@StuJRams).

Las Vegas Raiders

• The first unofficial depth chart of the year is out ahead of Thursday's preseason opener (@Raiders, @samwarren83). Levi Edwards' read: nothing out of the ordinary, with Jackson Powers-Johnson holding a slight edge at right guard and Darien Porter ahead at corner opposite Eric Stokes (@theleviedwards).

Los Angeles Chargers

• A committee declaration, on the record. Offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel said of Omarion Hampton, Keaton Mitchell and Kimani Vidal that he will use all three of them every game, per Alex Insdorf (@UnderdogNFL). Coaches say versions of this every August, but a coordinator naming three backs and attaching "every game" to it is the kind of statement that shows up in a workload split.
• The team feed kept it simple with a Justin Herbert clip (@chargers).

Los Angeles Rams

• The Rams and Cowboys hold a joint practice Tuesday, and Cameron DaSilva's preview lays out the six matchups with the most star power (@camdasilva).
• Los Angeles opens the preseason against Kansas City, with the team site's look-ahead published Monday (@StuJRams).

Miami Dolphins

• The Dolphins moved quickly on a tackle who was about to hit waivers: Miami acquired Caedan Wallace and a 2029 seventh-round pick from New England for a 2028 sixth, pending a physical, after the Patriots had planned to release him (@MiamiDolphins, @Schultz_Report).

Minnesota Vikings

Quiet day in Vikings camp — nothing notable to report.

New England Patriots

• Hunter Henry signed a two-year extension, and Caedan Wallace was traded to Miami (full story above) (@RapSheet, @RapSheet).
• The running back room is a live roster battle. Doug Kyed reports New England's young backs are pushing each other for the last spots (@DougKyed), and Mark Daniels' first 53-man projection sorts out who is on the bubble with preseason games starting this week (@ByMarkDaniels).
• New England's week is still built around Indianapolis — a joint practice and then the preseason opener in Foxborough, as the August 10 edition laid out.

New Orleans Saints

• The Saints are next on Terrion Arnold's list. Mike Garafolo reported the former Lions cornerback will meet with New Orleans after visiting Seattle (@MikeGarafolo, @UnderdogNFL).
• New Orleans marked Teddy Bridgewater's retirement with a tribute to its former quarterback (@Saints), and thanked the fans who traveled to Canton for Drew Brees (@Saints).

New York Giants

• Jordan Raanan's West Virginia standouts are a target-share preview: he has tight end Isaiah Likely as Jaxson Dart's No. 1 target, and Odell Beckham Jr. running good routes and making plays when he was with the first-team offense, alongside linebacker Arvell Reese and defensive tackle D.J. Reader (@JordanRaanan).
• Dart's Monday was eventful. Dan Duggan reported he appeared to roll his right ankle early, threw a pick-six on the next rep when Ar'Darius Washington tipped a quick pass and Darius Alexander returned it, then finished practice with a slight limp — including a bootleg he ended with a feet-first slide — and capped the day with a long touchdown to Darius Slayton (@DDuggan21, @art_stapleton).
• Duggan is also getting less sold on Paulson Adebo as a lock to start after 10 practices (@DDuggan21).

New York Jets

• The first unofficial depth chart landed, and Zack Rosenblatt's notes are the ones to read: Cade Klubnik at QB2, Braelon Allen at RB2, Kingsley Enagbare and Will McDonald listed as the starting edges — though Rosenblatt would be stunned if David Bailey is not starting — Jarvis Brownlee at nickel, and an unsettled second corner and second safety (@ZackBlatt, @nyjets).

Philadelphia Eagles

• Darius Cooper had the practice of the summer. EJ Smith counted roughly five catches in three periods on digs, outs, crossers and a go ball from Jalen Hurts against Riq Woolen and Michael Carter, and called him the best player on the field (@EJSmith94, @Jeff_McLane).
• Per Jimmy Kempski's updated camp battle tracker at PhillyVoice, Dontayvion Wicks now looks like the clear second-best receiver in camp with Cooper pushing behind him, Jalyx Hunt has moved ahead of Nolan Smith at edge, and Andy Dalton had his worst day of camp Monday in the QB2 race with Tanner McKee (@JimmyKempski).
• First-round receiver Makai Lemon is the other side of that room. Kempski's view is that it is now fair to doubt Lemon starts early in the season after he missed half of spring practices and half of camp (@UnderdogNFL).
• Roster moves: Philadelphia signed defensive tackle David Blay, running back Ja'Quinden Jackson and outside linebacker Tarron Jackson, placed running back Elijah Mitchell on injured reserve, and waived guard Jaeden Roberts and tight end Dae'Quan Wright (@Eagles). Tight end Eli Stowers caught his biggest camp touchdown against the first-team defense on what looked like busted coverage (@EJSmith94).

Pittsburgh Steelers

• The receiver order behind the top two is taking shape: Nick Farabaugh has Roman Wilson as the WR3 in the slot, with Germie Bernard the first man up if Pittsburgh loses someone outside (@FarabaughFB).
• The Steelers signed receiver Cornell Powell, who spent time on their practice squad last season, and waived/injured offensive tackle Lorenzo Thompson (@ASaunders_PGH).
• Pittsburgh and Green Bay meet in the preseason opener, with the Steelers' broadcast details out Monday (@steelers).

San Francisco 49ers

• Christian McCaffrey sat out Monday's practice with tightness, per Matt Maiocco (@UnderdogNFL) — and the 49ers spent the same day working out veteran running backs Nyheim Miller-Hines and Zamir White and hosting Blake Watson on a visit (@AdamSchefter).

Washington Commanders

• The first snap of the Brandon Coleman era at left tackle went well. John Keim had Jayden Daniels hitting Dyami Brown for a long touchdown over Mike Sainristil on it (@john_keim).

Cleveland Browns Receiver Battle: How to Read the Reps

The headline on Monday was that two Browns rookies got promoted. The part that changes projections is what happens to the veteran who was already there.

Per Tony Grossi's day-11 report at The Land On Demand, Denzel Boston's promotion is specifically to the X receiver — the WR1 alignment — and Todd Monken said outright that it means Jerry Jeudy gets used differently than he was the previous two years, because Jeudy is at his best on the move (@TonyGrossi). That is not a demotion, and reading it as one is the mistake. It is a role change: the X is the receiver who lines up on the line of scrimmage against press coverage and runs the offense's boundary routes, and moving Jeudy off it frees him for motion, stacks and the shorter, schemed targets a coordinator can manufacture.

The reason it matters this early is that the promotion was not reactive. Grossi reports the staff reassessed on Sunday, the players' day off — a decision made from film rather than from one good practice — and that both rookies will work exclusively with the ones for now (@camijustice).

What would have to change: Saturday's preseason opener at Chicago is the first live evidence. Cleveland has said Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders will each start one of the first two exhibitions (@ScottPetrak), so the useful thing to watch is not who throws it — it is whether Boston is on the field for the first-team series and where Jeudy lines up when he is.
