Yesterday's Five Biggest Stories
1. Teddy Bridgewater Retired, and Detroit Had a New Backup by Dinnertime
Detroit lost its backup quarterback and replaced him inside a single Sunday. Ian Rapoport reported that Bridgewater had informed the Lions he planned to step away with retirement likely, that he was 33 and set to be Detroit's No. 2, and that the team would work out a few quarterbacks (@RapSheet). Dan Campbell confirmed it publicly the same morning (@AdamSchefter, @Lions), the Lions placed Bridgewater on the reserve/retired list in a batch of moves that also signed cornerback Ryan Cooper and linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga and waived tight end Nick Muse (@Lions), and Eric Woodyard's story at ESPN carries Campbell's full framing of a second retirement (@AdamSchefter).
The audition that followed is the part worth filing away. Mike Garafolo reported the Lions worked out former Saints quarterback Jake Haener and UFL MVP Jack Plummer, kept both in the building after impressive workouts while they weighed options, and ultimately signed Josh Dobbs (@MikeGarafolo). The deal is one year and $1.425 million, with $475,000 of it locked in at signing — a structure Garafolo read as a real commitment to Dobbs as the No. 2 rather than a camp-body signing (@MikeGarafolo). Per Steelers Now, Dobbs is 31, a 2017 fourth-round pick of Pittsburgh out of Tennessee, and spent last season backing up in New England (@ASaunders_PGH).
For fantasy purposes this is an insurance-policy story, and the insurance got thinner and then got restocked in under three hours — Rapoport's report landed at 12:50 p.m. ET and Garafolo had the Dobbs terms by 3:31. What Dobbs walks into is a preseason where the backup arms do the throwing — Detroit's other camp quarterback, Altmyer, is already pointed at his exhibition debut (@ttwentyman).
What to watch in Allen Park: how quickly Dobbs is trusted with the exhibition offense. He signed on a Sunday in the second week of August, which leaves roughly three weeks of preseason work to learn a system he joined mid-camp — and those reps are the only live evidence Detroit collects about its QB2 before the games count.
2. Luther Burden III's Injury Got a Name and a Timeline
The Bears receiver who left Saturday's practice with a trainer, as the August 9 edition reported, has a groin injury. Ian Rapoport reported Sunday that Burden suffered it recently in practice and should miss a little bit of time, flagging it as one to watch (@RapSheet). A second report put a number on it — roughly a month, with hope that Burden is available for the season opener (@UnderdogNFL).
Burden did not practice Sunday, and Sean Hammond noted Chicago's receiver depth is being tested behind him — with Jahdae Walker getting lots of run with the ones (@sean_hammond). Jacob Infante's read was that a Week 1 return is possible and that it could have been considerably worse (@jacobinfante24). A month from the second week of August lands right at the opener, which is why we would treat this as a lost-August story rather than a lost-season story — but a rookie-contract receiver who misses the entire preseason gives back exactly the reps that were going to settle his role.
3. J.J. McCarthy Won the Night, Kyler Murray Got the Reps
Minnesota's quarterback competition produced its first split verdict of camp under the lights. Will Ragatz's wrap of Sunday's night practice gave the day to McCarthy — a red-hot start, a shakier finish, and the encouraging part being that he pushed the ball downfield — while noting Kyler Murray spent more time with the first-team offense and threw two interceptions (@WillRagatz).
The signature throw belonged to McCarthy: a step back in the pocket and a deep ball to Justin Jefferson down the right sideline past James Pierre, which Ragatz called his first real go ball of camp (@WillRagatz). Murray's night was not entirely his own doing — Blake Cashman and the first-team defense wrecked one starting-offense drive outright (@WillRagatz).
Kevin O'Connell declined to name a starter and put the rep split at about 50-50, saying the plan has given the staff plenty to coach (@WillRagatz). That is the number that matters more than either night's box score, and it has not moved.
What to watch in Eagan: the first practice where the split stops being 50-50. Until one of these two starts taking a clear majority of first-team reps, a good night is a good night — Justin Jefferson's projection does not move on a scorecard, it moves on a rotation.
4. The Colts Are Short on Healthy Receivers With a Joint Practice Coming
Adam Schefter laid out the state of the Indianapolis receiver room: Alec Pierce still has not practiced at all this summer following off-season ankle surgery, and Josh Downs sat out Saturday with a groin injury (@AdamSchefter). Jake Arthur had Downs as the latest name added to a growing receiver list (@JakeArthurNFL).
Stephen Holder's follow-up is the better news and, by his own framing, the most consequential thing to come out of Sunday's practice: Shane Steichen said Downs' groin injury is not serious and that he could return for Tuesday's joint practice at New England (@HolderStephen). Absence creates opportunity behind them — per The Athletic's Colts stock report, Nick Westbrook-Ikhine has started to separate himself as Indianapolis' third starting receiver (@RomeovilleKid). Kevin Bowen's notebook asks the follow-on question the beat is already asking: whether the Colts go add a wideout (@KBowen1070).
5. Carolina Signed Kyle Trask After Its Hall of Fame Game Hero Got Hurt
The move the August 9 edition had as expected is done. Carolina signed Trask with Haynes King — the undrafted rookie out of Georgia Tech who ran in the final-play touchdown in the Hall of Fame Game — now expected to miss time with a hamstring injury (@AdamSchefter). The team's own release counts Trask as a fourth quarterback on the roster and pairs the signing with waived/injured designations for receiver Malick Meiga and outside linebacker Nick Hampton (@Panthers); ESPN's story frames him as the QB3 with King sidelined.
Trask lands somewhere familiar — he spent his Tampa Bay years alongside Panthers offensive coordinator Brad Idzik — and he arrives with 11 career pass attempts, so the depth chart is being filled rather than reshaped. He may take snaps Saturday at Buffalo, where Dave Canales has already said his starters play: Bryce Young and the first team are down for 10 to 20 reps (@josephperson, @Sheena_Marie3).

Team-by-Team Camp Notes
Arizona Cardinals
- Usage first, and it is the note of the day in this backfield: Jeremiyah Love took work with the first team ahead of Tyler Allgeier in Sunday's scrimmage, per Theo Mackie (@UnderdogNFL), and Bo Brack had Love warming up with the starters at the Red & White practice (@BoBrack).
- Marvin Harrison Jr. pulled in a contested touchdown grab in the same session (@UnderdogNFL).
- Carson Beck moved in with the twos as practice continued and closed his work with a red-zone touchdown pass (@JohnnyVenerable).
- Off the field: newly inducted Hall of Famer Larry Fitzgerald took out a full-page thank-you ad in the Arizona Republic (@AdamSchefter).
Atlanta Falcons
- Atlanta's quarterback competition is still the only thing to track here, and it went a full week without a resolution — The Falcoholic's week-one review out of Flowery Branch covers where the job stands along with a read on both sides of the ball (@FalcoholicKevin).
- Ian Rapoport's segment grouped the Falcons with the Browns and Vikings as the three quarterback battles worth a national breakdown (@RapSheet).
Baltimore Ravens
- Ja'Kobi Lane's camp will not stop. Ryan Mink had the rookie receiver working back to the ball for a 15-yard grab in front of Marlon Humphrey and drawing a pass interference on Humphrey deep down the sideline (@ryanmink), Jonas Shaffer counted two more explosive catches from Lamar Jackson (@jonas_shaffer), and Jeff Zrebiec had Lane's daily highlight alongside a Keondre Jackson interception of Tyler Huntley (@jeffzrebiec).
- The discipline flag on an 11-on-11-heavy day: Shaffer unofficially counted at least seven false starts across the first, second and third strings, and thought Ronnie Stanley had two of them in the red zone (@jonas_shaffer).
- Elijah Sarratt described Lane as effortlessly good and said the two rookies push each other (@jeffzrebiec), and Lane talked through building trust with Jackson (@jamisonhensley).
- Attendance: Calais Campbell returned to practice; Zay Flowers, Dayton Wade, Aeneas Peebles and Carl Jones Jr. remained out, with Skylar Thompson and Keyon Martin new to the list (@jonas_shaffer).
Buffalo Bills
- Buffalo's preseason opener just got more useful to watch: Carolina is bringing its starters, and Dave Canales confirmed Bryce Young and the first team are down for 10 to 20 reps at Highmark (@josephperson, @Sheena_Marie3).
- Color from the night practice: the team feed carried a Josh Allen handoff on Desmond Akin's touchdown for a Make-A-Wish celebration and an Allen mic'd-up bedtime story (@BuffaloBills, @BuffaloBills).
Carolina Panthers
- Kyle Trask signed and Haynes King is expected to miss time with a hamstring (full story above) (@AdamSchefter, @Panthers).
- Usage note for Saturday: Canales said the starters play at Buffalo, with Bryce Young in for 10 to 20 reps (@josephperson, @UnderdogNFL). Alex Zietlow's follow-up works through what that means for the rest of the availability list (@alexzietlow05).
- The team's practice observations had the starters ramping intensity ahead of the trip (@Panthers), and Joseph Person set the scene: a new quarterback in the building and the Hall of Fame Game hero out of it (@josephperson).
- Luke Kuechly's enshrinement weekend closed out with the Panthers' feed on it all day (@Panthers).
Chicago Bears
- Luther Burden III has a groin injury and is expected to miss roughly a month (full story above) (@RapSheet, @UnderdogNFL).
- Usage in a thinning secondary: Xavier Woods, signed two days earlier, played with the starters next to Dillon Thieneman and intercepted a Caleb Williams heave in the final team period (@adamjahns), while rookie Malik Muhammad drew a heavy workload at nickel with the ones and worked into Dennis Allen's dime package (@adamjahns). Per Adam Jahns' Day 10 notebook at CHGO, Allen pointed to Woods' scheme versatility and his history with defensive backs coach Al Harris in Dallas as the reason for the add (@adamjahns).
- Another receiver went down: third-round rookie Zavion Thomas left practice early after going down in seven-on-sevens, briefly grabbing his knee before walking off with a limp (@AdamHoge, @sean_hammond).
- Rookie tight end Sam Roush's story of the week: he says he caught Ben Johnson with bed head at 8 a.m. after the head coach slept in the facility (@UnderdogNFL).
Cincinnati Bengals
- The first-team offense opened practice with a 60-yard drive on which Joe Burrow hit Tee Higgins three times on slants and in-breakers, then found a different target on a corner route off a roll-out for the touchdown (@Trags). Higgins got his own score later, in the corner of the end zone on a red-zone rep (@Trags).
- Cincinnati released its first depth chart of the season ahead of the preseason opener. Paul Dehner Jr.'s caution is the standing one — these documents move constantly — and he saw no major surprises against what the camp reps have shown (@pauldehnerjr).
- Ja'Marr Chase was asked about Burrow's demeanor heading into the season and liked what he is seeing (@UnderdogNFL).
- Burrow was back out running sprints after practice (@Trags).
Cleveland Browns
- Deshaun Watson has separated in the quarterback competition, and Tony Grossi's 10-practice retrospective explains when and how it started (full breakdown in the battle spotlight below) (@TonyGrossi).
- Grossi's day-10 rundown also has rookie tackle Spencer Fano refusing to back down from Jared Verse in the trench work (@TonyGrossi).
- Ian Rapoport's national segment put the Browns first among the three quarterback battles worth breaking down (@RapSheet).
Dallas Cowboys
- The rep of camp is now a daily fixture: CeeDee Lamb against rookie safety Caleb Downs. Todd Archer ran the slot-fade version (@toddarcher), Downs won one of them with a pass breakup after reading the pick (@UnderdogNFL), and Dak Prescott hit Lamb repeatedly the other way (@jonmachota, @UnderdogNFL).
- Interior line usage worth logging: Tyler Smith has been limited in some team drills over the last two practices with T.J. Bass taking first-team left guard reps, though Archer notes Smith has not missed a day or skipped an 11-on-11 period — maintenance rather than injury (@toddarcher).
- Lamb set his own bar for the season: win, stay healthy, and dominate, with the numbers landing where they land (@jonmachota).
- Former Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs worked out for Detroit over the weekend (@AdamSchefter).
Denver Broncos
- Nothing from Denver's camp reached our wire on Sunday beyond a post from the team's own account (@Broncos).
Detroit Lions
- Teddy Bridgewater retired and the Lions signed Josh Dobbs to a one-year deal the same day (full story above) (@RapSheet, @MikeGarafolo).
- Detroit also worked out former Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs this weekend (@AdamSchefter), while former Lions corner Terrion Arnold took a second visit with Seattle (@Schultz_Report).
- Jahmyr Gibbs was back on the field and the difference showed (@DetroitOnLion). Campbell also said he hoped to get Ben Bartch, who is competing for the starting left guard job through a foot injury, into team drills (@nolanbianchi), and Altmyer is looking forward to his preseason debut (@ttwentyman).
Green Bay Packers
- The health note that matters most to this passing game: Tucker Kraft is back running routes as he ramps up from ACL rehab (@UnderdogNFL), and Jordan Love found him in team work (@mattschneidman).
- Secondary reps moved: Keisean Nixon started team drills with the ones and then worked with the backup defense during the second rotation, with Brandon Cisse and Benjamin St-Juste taking the first-team snaps (@mattschneidman).
- Aaron Nagler liked what he saw from John Williams at left tackle with the twos and wants a preseason look at him (@AaronNagler).
- Rob Demovsky's camp report has Savion Williams' big day, the lineup changes, and two veterans making their camp debuts (@RobDemovsky). Matt LaFleur told the team everybody healthy should be ready to play in Pittsburgh, starters included (@ByRyanWood).
Houston Texans
- Houston's cornerback search has a name still circulating: Terrion Arnold, who visited the Texans previously, took a second visit with Seattle on Sunday and has interest elsewhere (@Schultz_Report).
- Nothing else out of Houston's camp reached our wire beyond the team's own countdown posts (@HoustonTexans).
Indianapolis Colts
- Alec Pierce still has not practiced this summer and Josh Downs' groin is not considered serious (full story above) (@AdamSchefter, @HolderStephen).
- It was a rough Sunday for the starting offense. Per Kevin Bowen's notebook at 107.5 The Fan, Daniel Jones went an unofficial 7-of-13 with two interceptions and a red-zone sack, while Anthony Richardson Sr. and Riley Leonard finished strong (@KBowen1070).
- Richardson's camp has drawn the harshest reviews of anyone's: he was listed as a stock faller after a rough night practice and an alarming number of mishandled or dropped snaps (@UnderdogNFL). Richardson said he has not talked with his agent or Chris Ballard about the trade request recently and is focused on where he is (@RomeovilleKid), and Riley Leonard framed the QB2 competition as one between friends (@RomeovilleKid).
- Both will get exhibition work: Richardson and Leonard are expected to play in Thursday's opener at New England (@mchappell51, @JoelAErickson).
- Laiatu Latu forced a late change on the offensive line in Saturday's work (@JakeArthurNFL).
Jacksonville Jaguars
- The snap tracker everyone is watching: Travis Hunter took 20 snaps on day 10 — 12 on defense, eight on offense — putting him at 143 for camp, 88 defensive and 55 offensive, and he leapt for an interception of a Trevor Lawrence throw to Parker Washington at the goal line, though DiRocco noted the play looked like a sack before the throw (@ESPNdirocco).
- Parker Washington keeps showing up on the other end of it — Lawrence hit him down the sideline in team work (@UnderdogNFL), and the team ran him mic'd up for the day (@UnderdogNFL, @Jaguars).
- Former Jaguars running back Leonard Fournette turned up at practice in Jaguars gear (@_John_Shipley).
Kansas City Chiefs
- A quiet day on the Chiefs wire. The only Kansas City items to clear our filters were the team feed's practice clips (@Chiefs) and a local podcast segment on camp fights, camp risers and the preseason opener (@Jacobs71).
Las Vegas Raiders
- Ashton Jeanty joined Ian Rapoport's show to talk through the new offensive scheme and his outlook for the season (@RapSheet).
- Rapoport's in-studio segment revisited the Raiders holding Kirk Cousins and Maxx Crosby out of Saturday's practice as a message to the team, which ran as a top story in the August 9 edition (@RapSheet).
Los Angeles Chargers
- A quiet day on the Chargers wire — the only Los Angeles items to clear our filters were practice clips from the team's own account, including a Justin Herbert connection with Ladd McConkey (@chargers).
Los Angeles Rams
Quiet day in Rams camp — nothing notable to report.
Miami Dolphins
Quiet day in Dolphins camp — nothing notable to report.
Minnesota Vikings
- McCarthy won the night, Murray took more first-team reps and threw two picks, and the split stayed 50-50 (full story above) (@WillRagatz, @WillRagatz).
- The throw of the night was McCarthy's step-back deep ball to Justin Jefferson down the right sideline past James Pierre (@WillRagatz).
- Ragatz has Brian Flores' first-team defense looking as scary as ever, with Blake Cashman and the ones wrecking a starting-offense drive outright (@WillRagatz).
- O'Connell also handled injury notes alongside the quarterback update (@WillRagatz).
New England Patriots
- New England's week is built around Indianapolis: a joint practice Tuesday and the preseason opener Thursday, both in Foxborough. Josh Downs could be back in time for the joint session (@HolderStephen), and the Colts plan to play Anthony Richardson Sr. and Riley Leonard on Thursday (@mchappell51).
- The team feed spent Sunday on the countdown (@Patriots).
New Orleans Saints
- Rookie receiver Jordyn Tyson was the highlight of the day (@nick_underhill), and Jordan Schultz called his route running the kind that lasts (@Schultz_Report).
- Tyler Shough came out sharp, and Nick Underhill's question is whether the momentum holds (@nick_underhill).
- The injury: offensive lineman Dillon Radunz tore his ACL in Saturday's practice, per Kellen Moore (@AdamSchefter, @nick_underhill).
- Linebacker Danny Stutsman took a heavy load of first-team reps (@RossJacksonNOLA).
New York Giants
- Malik Nabers is trending toward being ready for Week 1 barring a setback, per Jordan Raanan (@UnderdogNFL). Per Patricia Traina's roster projection at Giants Country, Nabers avoiding the PUP list reshapes the room — though she expects pitch-count restrictions to linger, which is why she carries a seventh receiver (@Patricia_Traina).
- Jaxson Dart spent Saturday working back-corner throws with Nabers, Odell Beckham Jr. and Isaiah Likely, and the Giants returned to their New Jersey fields Monday (@art_stapleton, @UnderdogNFL).
New York Jets
- The workload signal fantasy managers have been waiting on: the Jets look like they plan to feature Breece Hall more prominently as their lead back this season, per Connor Hughes (@UnderdogNFL).
Philadelphia Eagles
- Jimmy Kempski's Sunday item was about the other locker room: Philadelphia's Week 1 opponent lost Laremy Tunsil to a torn triceps, the story that led the August 9 edition (@JimmyKempski).
- Philadelphia's own camp was quiet by comparison, with the team feed's practice clips the only other Eagles items on the wire (@Eagles).
Pittsburgh Steelers
- The preseason opener against Green Bay just got more interesting: Matt LaFleur told his team that anybody healthy needs to be ready to play in Pittsburgh, starters included (@ByRyanWood).
- Josh Dobbs, a 2017 fourth-round pick of the Steelers, signed with Detroit after Teddy Bridgewater's retirement (@ASaunders_PGH).
- The team closed out week two of camp at Saint Vincent College, with the full photo set on the Steelers' site (@steelers).
San Francisco 49ers
- Receivers coach Leonard Hankerson has a new favorite: he called rookie Will Pauling the most physical receiver on the roster in the blocking game and nicknamed him the hammer (@LombardiHimself).
- Hankerson also flagged De'Zhaun Stribling for cross-sifting 263-pound defensive end Ruben Bain, framing it as a rookie refusing to duck the assignment (@LombardiHimself).
- San Francisco has a joint practice with Tennessee coming, and the Titans' rookie receiver is the name to know before it (@CharlesRobinson).
Seattle Seahawks
- Seattle hosted cornerback Terrion Arnold for a second visit Sunday. Arnold, formerly of Detroit, previously met with Houston and has interest from other teams (@Schultz_Report, @UnderdogNFL).
- Safety A.J. Finley, a year removed from a serious injury at the same event, got mobbed by teammates for his full-circle moment and is back in the secondary plans (@gbellseattle).
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- A usage note out of the backfield: Kenneth Gainwell has not carried much but has emerged as a dynamic receiving back in camp, per Pewter Report (@UnderdogNFL).
Tennessee Titans
- The target counts are public and they are the most useful thing on the Titans wire. Per the Titans beat's running tally, camp receptions so far: Wan'Dale Robinson 26, Elic Ayomanor 21, Tyjae Spears 19, Carnell Tate 16 (@UnderdogNFL).
- Sunday was a passing-game day regardless. The same practice log had Cam Ward 11-of-21 overall, 5-of-7 in the red zone with three touchdowns, and Tate accounting for three scores (@UnderdogNFL). Field Yates expects Tate to have some of the best hands in the league before long (@FieldYates), Underdog's read was blunter (@UnderdogNFL), and the team feed ran the highlights (@Titans).
- Charles Robinson watched Tennessee move Tate all over the formation and is curious how he holds up in the joint practice with San Francisco (@CharlesRobinson).
- Tennessee also released a depth chart (@BuckReising).
Washington Commanders
- The Tunsil replacement plan is official: Nicki Jhabvala reported the plan is to move Brandon Coleman back to left tackle, where he started in 2024 (@NickiJhabvala). Per her story at The Athletic, a team source says Washington may still add to the line for depth, and the shuffle comes about a month before the opener (@NickiJhabvala).
- Coleman started at left tackle for most of 2024, which is the reason this is a reshuffle rather than a scramble — and it moves the open question inside to left guard.

Cleveland Browns Quarterback Battle: How to Read the Reps
Saturday looked like a sudden turn. Per Tony Grossi's 10-practice review at The Land On Demand, it was not — the decision to ramp up Deshaun Watson's first-team work first surfaced two days earlier, on Thursday (@TonyGrossi).
That is the piece the August 9 edition could not see. Thursday was Shedeur Sanders' scheduled day with the ones, and Watson was quietly slipped onto the first team for an inside run drill and an extra seven-on-seven period. Grossi's argument for why that mattered is the useful part: Todd Monken downplayed the inside run period as handoffs, but if handoffs were all it was, Cleveland could have used Dillon Gabriel or Taylen Green there and spent Watson's time throwing in one-on-ones instead. Putting the projected starter in that drill is about operational reps — the run checks and the line calls a starter has to make.
Grossi also supplies the reason the staff wanted the change. Through seven practices, Watson had thrown seven of the team's 12 interceptions, and the concern was less about optics than about Monken not wanting turnovers from the position.
What would have to change: the preseason opener against Chicago is the next real checkpoint. If Watson takes the first-team offense onto the field for it, the alternating rotation is finished and the rest of camp is a starter taking starter reps.
How we would read it from here: the reps quietly overrode the stated rotation on Thursday and then did it openly two days later, and a rotation that gets overridden on the other quarterback's scheduled day is not really a rotation. Our projections hold the Cleveland passing game in a wide band until Cleveland says something definitive, because the gap between a Watson-led offense and a rookie-led one is wide enough to move every Cleveland pass-catcher's projection.
