Yesterday's Five Biggest Stories
1. Cleveland Named Deshaun Watson Its Week 1 Starter, and Shedeur Sanders Is the Backup
The longest-running quarterback story of the summer ended on a Monday morning. Jordan Schultz had it first, reporting that the Browns were naming Deshaun Watson their starting quarterback with Shedeur Sanders as the backup (@Schultz_Report). Ian Rapoport framed the whole competition in one line: Watson was the favorite going into camp, and now he is the starter, officially (@RapSheet). Adam Schefter added the detail that matters for a Week 1 lineup, which is that the job comes with a road opener at Jacksonville (@AdamSchefter). The team made it official shortly after (@Browns).
The Browns' own write-up of the announcement carries head coach Todd Monken's reasoning in full, and it is more specific than the usual competition boilerplate. Monken said he took in the full body of work across the offseason program, training camp, the preseason games and the joint practice, and concluded that for a season opening on the road, Watson gave Cleveland "the best chance to move the ball and score points." That opener is September 13 at Jacksonville. Mike Garafolo relayed the same framing from the podium (@MikeGarafolo).
Two follow-ups sharpen it. Schultz reported that Watson's postgame comments on Saturday, in which he called fans disrespectful for booing him, were not factored into the decision, and that Watson, in the final year of a five-year, $230 million contract, gets the first crack while Sanders stays ready (@Schultz_Report). Mary Kay Cabot reported that Monken gave zero consideration to the fan reaction and called the decision "not a week to week thing" (@MaryKayCabot, @MaryKayCabot). Albert Breer's read on how it got here: Watson had been better and more consistent over time before a rough Saturday, and he practiced well against the Bills in Thursday's joint work (@AlbertBreer). Tony Grossi's Land On Demand column had flagged the direction ahead of the announcement, and it is worth remembering what Saturday actually was: a 5-of-12 passing night against Buffalo's third-string defense.
Then Watson went out and practiced as the starter. Daniel Oyefusi's report from a shells practice is the usage line to write down: Watson took every snap with the No. 1 offense, Sanders took the remaining reps, and Monken talked about using the final couple of weeks of camp to get Sanders work (@DanielOyefusi, @UnderdogNFL). Watson also opened his availability by apologizing for Saturday, saying his emotions got the best of him (@DanielOyefusi, @AdamSchefter). Monken's account of his one-on-one with Sanders was that the rookie understood the long game (@DanielOyefusi).
For anyone drafting Cleveland skill players, the unknown thrower problem is solved, and it is solved in the direction the offense had been preparing for all camp. That is the version our QB1 model verdict board has to price now.
What we are watching: Sanders' rep share over the last two weeks of camp. Monken said out loud that he intends to get the backup work, and the size of that share is the difference between a settled depth chart and a leash. Watson taking every first-team snap on day one of the new arrangement is the baseline to compare against.
2. The Patriots Traded Kayshon Boutte to Houston for a Safety and a Pick
Tom Pelissero broke it: New England is sending wide receiver Kayshon Boutte to the Texans for safety Jaylen Reed and a draft pick (@TomPelissero). Schefter confirmed the terms as Boutte for Reed and a 2028 seventh-round pick (@AdamSchefter), and Rapoport added the wrinkle that the seventh in question is the one New England acquired from New Orleans (@RapSheet). ESPN's trade story has the full write-up.
Mike Reiss explained the fit on both ends in one sentence, and it is the clearest statement of why this happened: the Patriots had seven roster-worthy receivers, and Houston had a need after losing Jayden Higgins to a knee injury (@MikeReiss). Jordan Schultz had the Patriots' side of it landing the same way (@Schultz_Report).
Taylor Kyles made the case that this is a favor to the player, arguing Boutte was never going to get the volume in New England's offense to earn a big contract next offseason (@tkyles39). Going the other way, Evan Lazar's scouting note on Reed is that he played only 73 defensive snaps in a crowded Houston secondary last season and profiles as a physical, high-motor defender who plays the run from the slot or the box and can cover receivers and tight ends in man (@ezlazar, @ezlazar).
The fantasy read is on the Houston side. A team that just lost a receiver to a knee injury imported a body who could not crack a seven-deep room, which tells us more about the depth chart behind Nico Collins than it does about Boutte. C.J. Stroud spent the same practice hitting Xavier Hutchinson for a 50-yard touchdown over Derek Stingley Jr. (@jonmalexander), and Hutchinson is the name currently doing the work.
What we are watching: whether Boutte gets first-team reps in Houston's finale week or arrives as a depth signing. A receiver traded six days before cutdowns can be a Week 1 rotation piece or a practice-squad candidate, and the rep report is the only thing that separates the two.
3. Two Veterans Called It a Career on the Same Day
Allen Robinson is officially retiring after 11 NFL seasons, announcing it on Instagram, and Jordan Schultz posted the career line: 565 catches, 7,058 yards and 43 touchdowns (@Schultz_Report). A Pro Bowl receiver who spent more than a decade as somebody's WR1 or WR2 is off the board for good.
Tight end C.J. Uzomah retired the same day, with Rapoport marking it plainly (@RapSheet). Cincinnati made a small ceremony of it, posting "Retiring in Stripes" and "Thanks for the memories, C.J." (@Bengals, @Bengals).
Neither name is in anybody's draft plans in 2026, and that is precisely why the day is worth a line here. Late August is when the veteran layer of the league thins out, and both of these were players whose availability, a couple of seasons ago, moved somebody's bench decision.
4. Arizona Waived Trey Benson and Got Josh Sweat Back
The Cardinals waived running back Trey Benson with an injury designation (@AdamSchefter, @UnderdogNFL). Arizona's own move sheet packaged it with the rest of the day: edge rusher Josh Sweat activated from the physically unable to perform list, safeties Hudson Clark and Devyn Bobby signed, tight end Baylor Cupp and receiver Bryson Green cut, and Xavier Weaver to injured reserve (@AZCardinals).
The reason this belongs above a routine transaction line is what it does to the backfield picture. Johnny Venerable laid the two depth charts side by side: Arizona's 2025 room read James Conner, Trey Benson, Emari Demercado, and the 2026 room reads Jeremiyah Love, Tyler Allgeier and Bam Knight (@JohnnyVenerable). A back who was drafted to be the change of pace is gone, and the names behind the starter are all new ones. Our RB1 model verdict board is the place that shakes out.
Sweat's return is the other half. Schefter reported he was activated Monday and back on the field for the first time since the end of last season (@AdamSchefter, @AdamSchefter).
5. Malik Nabers Took Off the Red Jersey
The single best piece of receiver news on the board. Malik Nabers shed the red non-contact jersey and took part in live drills for the first time (@UnderdogNFL), and Jordan Raanan's count was three reps in 11-on-11 and three in 7-on-7, including a nice catch on a ball he had to go down and pluck off the turf (@JordanRaanan). ESPN's story on the session carries the line that turns this from a practice note into a draft-board input: Harbaugh said it is reasonable to assume Nabers will be ready for the opener (@AdamSchefter).
The beat was careful about the caveats, and we will be too. Art Stapleton watched Nabers being deliberate with his cuts and in and out of his breaks on air, catching two passes in three-quarter-speed team work before opening up in space (@art_stapleton). Dan Duggan had him catching a pass over the middle from Brandon Allen and failing to haul in a high crosser from Jaxson Dart (@DDuggan21). Connor Hughes made the limiting point explicitly, which is that Nabers was worked in for reps rather than going full (@Connor_J_Hughes).
Raanan's summary is that Nabers continues to track for Week 1 against Dallas. That is a knee coming back on schedule in the last week of August, which is the outcome anybody holding a top-shelf receiver was hoping for.
What we are watching: whether Nabers goes full in a team period this week rather than being worked in. Deliberate cuts on air are a rehab step, not a clearance, and the jump from limited reps to a normal practice load is the one that settles his opening-week workload.

Team-by-Team Camp Notes
Arizona Cardinals
- Running back Trey Benson was waived with an injury designation, the headline item on a busy transaction day that also sent receiver Xavier Weaver to injured reserve and cut tight end Baylor Cupp and receiver Bryson Green (@AdamSchefter, @AZCardinals).
- Edge rusher Josh Sweat came off the physically unable to perform list and practiced for the first time since the end of last season (@AdamSchefter).
- Arizona is in Green Bay this week, and the Packers are running their bike tradition for the visitors, asking kids to bring bikes to Wednesday morning's practice to give Cardinals and Packers players rides (@AaronNagler).
Atlanta Falcons
- The quarterback reps finally split down the middle, and the numbers are the story: Michael Penix Jr. took 14 snaps and went 4-of-8 passing, Tua Tagovailoa took 11 snaps and went 0-for-3 (@UnderdogNFL, @ByDanielFlick).
- Daniel Flick's charting adds the context under those lines. Penix's day included a throw to Drake London on fourth-and-5; Tagovailoa's 0-for-3 included a Bijan Robinson drop on a rollout to the left and excludes a defensive pass interference he drew on a red-zone throw (@ByDanielFlick).
- Marc Raimondi's Day 15 notes say the practice was built to simulate a regular-season Wednesday, that both quarterbacks got nearly all the reps with the ones in 11-on-11, and that this was Penix's first day working with the first team (@marcraimondi).
- Ian Rapoport's on-air read is that Penix now has a chance to win the job outright (@RapSheet).
Baltimore Ravens
- Jesse Minter said Jovaughn Gwyn and Ethan Pocic will both get first-team work this week as they compete for the starting center job (@jamisonhensley).
- Nnamdi Madubuike hit the sled for the first time this summer (@jeffzrebiec).
- The team's account spent the day launching a new look called White Noise, set to debut at the stadium on September 20 (@Ravens).
Buffalo Bills
- Defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard's main concern out of two preseason games is that the starting secondary has not had enough reps together, and Maxwell Hairston had another rough day (@MattParrino).

Carolina Panthers
- Carolina released its depth chart ahead of the preseason finale (@Panthers).
- The team's own camp observations say the joint practice will determine workload in that finale, which is the useful part for anyone trying to guess who plays (@Panthers).
Chicago Bears
- The clearest usage signal in Chicago is at slot corner. Malik Muhammad played 34 defensive snaps against the Bengals on Saturday and 29 of them came in the slot, or 85.2%, up from 57.5% against Cleveland, and with Kyler Gordon's health an issue Jacob Infante has him well-positioned for a starting role (@jacobinfante24).
- Roster projections are the genre of the week with six days to cutdowns. Courtney Cronin published hers after two preseason games (@CourtneyRCronin), and Adam Jahns went with four running backs, 10 offensive linemen and only five defensive tackles, changed in places by injuries (@adamjahns).
Cincinnati Bengals
- Cincinnati released offensive lineman Cody Ford, who had played 50 of a possible 51 regular-season games across three years with the team (@MikeGarafolo, @Bengals).
- C.J. Uzomah's retirement got the full team treatment, with the club posting "Retiring in Stripes" and thanking him by name (@Bengals, @Bengals).
- Kelsey Conway pointed to Pat Brennan's reporting on where the backup tackle competition stands, which is the position group with a genuine job open (@KelseyLConway).
Cleveland Browns
- Deshaun Watson is the Week 1 starter, and he practiced like it: every snap with the No. 1 offense in a shells practice, with Shedeur Sanders taking the remainder (@DanielOyefusi). The full story is at the top of this page.
- Todd Monken said he plans to use the final couple of weeks of camp to get Sanders reps, and described his one-on-one with the rookie as a conversation about the long game (@DanielOyefusi, @Browns).

Dallas Cowboys
- Brian Schottenheimer gave the most quotable coaching answer of the day on Joe Milton, dismissing the college-era praise for how hard and how far he could throw it as carnival material rather than quarterback play (@jonmachota).
- The Week 1 opponent got healthier. Malik Nabers is out of the red non-contact jersey and tracking for the opener against Dallas (@JordanRaanan).
Denver Broncos
- Pat Surtain II landed at No. 10 on the NFL Top 100 (@Broncos).

- Houston acquired Kayshon Boutte from New England for safety Jaylen Reed and a 2028 seventh-round pick (@TomPelissero, @AdamSchefter). Full details above.
- C.J. Stroud hit Xavier Hutchinson for a 50-yard touchdown, beating Derek Stingley Jr. on the play (@jonmalexander).
- Defensive end Dylan Horton is feared to have suffered a torn Achilles at practice after being helped off the field (@AaronWilson_NFL).
- Rookie linebacker Wade Woodaz had surgery on a broken thumb and is expected to miss the week before a return-to-play plan with a cast (@AaronWilson_NFL). Receiver Jaylin Noel is back from a strained hamstring and a broken right pinkie (@AaronWilson_NFL).
Indianapolis Colts
- Running back Roydell Williams, most recently with the Colts, is signing in Detroit (@Schultz_Report).
- The clip of the day out of Indianapolis had nothing to do with football: Daniel Jones getting the better of Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton (@RomeovilleKid).
Jacksonville Jaguars
- Jacksonville now knows who it sees in Week 1. Deshaun Watson was named Cleveland's starter for the season opener at Jacksonville (@AdamSchefter).
- Tony Boselli was named to the NFL's Competition Committee (@Jaguars).

Los Angeles Rams
- Sean McVay said Ty Simpson will definitely play in Thursday night's preseason finale, while whether Stetson Bennett IV plays and the overall quarterback usage are still to be determined (@StuJRams).
- The Rams' preseason game left a mark on the other sideline: running back Ty Chandler suffered a knee injury against Los Angeles that is feared to be serious, with the expectation that he will be down for a while (@nick_underhill).
Miami Dolphins
- Two bodies back: receiver Chris Bell is out of the red non-contact jersey and quarterback Quinn Ewers returned to practice after missing last week (@Marcel_LJ).
- The competition for the final roster spots is heating up with cutdown day approaching (@DavidFurones_).
Minnesota Vikings
- Minnesota signed defensive lineman Jonathan Harris and tight end Matt Lauter, and waived-injured cornerback Tyreek Chappell and defensive lineman Taki Taimani (@Vikings).
- Justin Jefferson told Mike Silver he does not think the general public views him as the best receiver in football anymore, and that they will after this year (@UnderdogNFL).

- Harbaugh called the practice more in-season-ish, with the first half of team periods not fully live and the backups serving as the scout team against the first-team offense (@DDuggan21).
- Ryan Dunleavy flags a possible trade of either Darius Slayton or Darnell Mooney, whose strengths overlap (@rydunleavy).
New York Jets

- Smith was also a full participant after his own hamstring issue (@EJSmith94).
- Dave Zangaro's piece at NBC Sports Philadelphia is the useful depth-chart read of the week: Jeremiah Trotter Jr. has looked like a starting-caliber linebacker all summer, but with Zack Baun back and first-round pick Jihaad Campbell in the room there is no job to win (@DZangaroNBCS).

Atlanta Falcons Quarterback Battle: How to Read the Reps
Until Monday the Falcons' quarterback competition had been a competition on paper, because Michael Penix Jr. had not been working with the first team. Monday was the first day both men were actually measured on the same field, and the way the reps were handed out is more informative than either stat line.
Start with the structure of the practice. Marc Raimondi's Day 15 notes say the session was designed to simulate a regular-season Wednesday, and that both Tua Tagovailoa and Penix took nearly all of the reps with the first team in 11-on-11 periods (@marcraimondi). That is the important sentence, and it is easy to skim past. A team that has decided does not build its most game-like practice of the week around two quarterbacks alternating with the starters. Splitting the ones in a simulated Wednesday is what an open competition looks like in late August.
Then the counts. Penix took 14 snaps and went 4-of-8; Tagovailoa took 11 snaps and went 0-for-3 (@UnderdogNFL, @ByDanielFlick). The snap gap is the number worth more than the completion percentage, because on a day one quarterback is making his first appearance with the first team, the coach who hands him more of them is telling you something. Three extra snaps is not a landslide. It is also not the way you script a day for a settled starter.
Here is the day in one place:
| Quarterback | Snaps with the ones | Passing |
|---|---|---|
| Michael Penix Jr. | 14 | 4-of-8 |
| Tua Tagovailoa | 11 | 0-for-3 |
Daniel Flick charted it closely enough to keep everyone honest in both directions. Penix's day included a throw to Drake London on fourth-and-5. Tagovailoa's 0-for-3 included a Bijan Robinson drop on a rollout to the left, and it excludes a defensive pass interference he drew on a red-zone throw, so the raw line is harsher than the tape (@ByDanielFlick). Flick's own summary was that Penix has been sharper, but that neither has been particularly good (@ByDanielFlick). That is a useful corrective for anyone reading a 4-of-8 as a coronation.
The national read moved on the same day. Ian Rapoport said on NFL Network that Penix now has a chance to win the starting job (@RapSheet). Three weeks ago that sentence would not have been written.
The fantasy stakes are not really about the quarterbacks, and this is where our projections diverge from the discourse. Neither Atlanta passer is being drafted as a starting fantasy quarterback in most formats. What the outcome decides is the efficiency environment for Drake London and Bijan Robinson, two players who are drafted early and whose weekly ceilings depend on how far down the field the ball travels and how often the offense finishes drives. Those are different answers under a quarterback with Penix's arm than under Tagovailoa's timing-and-rhythm profile, and the market has not repriced either skill player for the possibility of a change.
What we are watching: the rep split at Atlanta's next practice. If the ones go back to being Tagovailoa's with Penix mixing in, Monday was a look. If they split again, or tilt further toward Penix, the Falcons have a real decision in front of them with two weeks to make it.
