Yesterday's Five Biggest Stories

1. Ja'Marr Chase Grabbed His Left Knee, Then Spent the Afternoon Telling Everyone He Was Fine

For a few minutes on Tuesday afternoon, the most expensive receiver on a 2026 fantasy draft board was on the grass in Cincinnati. Ja'Marr Chase landed awkwardly after a deep route and came up holding his left knee, then hobbled off under his own power (@AdamSchefter, @UnderdogNFL). Adam Schefter posted the play itself a few minutes later (@AdamSchefter), and Kelsey Conway's read from the field was the first calming signal of the day: Chase was walking it off, no cart, no help (@KelseyLConway).

ESPN's story on the scare has the mechanism and the aftermath. Chase was working against cornerback DJ Turner II on a deep ball down the right sideline when he took a bad step and the knee buckled slightly. Athletic trainer Matt Summers looked at it briefly, Chase limped off, and he spent the rest of the session watching. He called the injury not very serious and made clear he had wanted to go back out — "I was trying to get back in, y'all" — while acknowledging the decision on his preseason workload belongs to the people above him. The beat watched him stretch the knee out on the sideline while the first team kept working (@Trags).

The signals improved from there, and the order matters. Within about twenty minutes of the rep, Chase was no longer receiving any treatment (@UnderdogNFL), and Field Yates' summary of the sequence was that it seems like nothing serious (@FieldYates). Then Chase went on the radio and put a word to it, telling Tony Pike and Mo Egger on ESPN 1530 that it was a little hyperextension and that he could have kept going if he needed to (@KelseyLConway, @AdamSchefter).

Tee Higgins was off the field for the finish too — he took his pads off and joined Chase as a spectator in what ESPN reports he called a veteran rest day — and the Bengals' offense closed practice with a flurry without either of them. Jay Morrison's line for how the building felt afterward was the shortest one written all day: everybody can breathe (@ByJayMorrison).

Nothing about Tuesday changes where Chase sits on a draft board, and that is exactly why it belongs at the top of this page — a first-overall-caliber receiver went down and got up in the last full week of camp. Our WR1 model verdict board prices that tier on availability as much as talent.

What we are watching: whether Chase practices before Friday, when Cincinnati plays its last exhibition, a road game against Philadelphia. A star receiver was never going to take meaningful snaps in that game anyway, so the tell is the practice field, not the box score.

2. Calvin Austin III Was Carted Off in New York With What a Source Called a Serious Knee Injury

The other knee on Tuesday did not come with an all-clear. Adam Schefter reported that Giants receiver Calvin Austin was carted off practice with what one source described as a "serious knee injury" (@AdamSchefter).

The scene is worth the detail because of how it happened. Jordan Raanan watched Austin crumble to the ground in one-on-one drills while running a route, grabbing his right knee immediately, with the team huddling around him and owner John Mara walking over to console him (@JordanRaanan). Dan Duggan's account adds that the reaction told the story before any report did — the receivers and defensive backs could not watch while trainers worked (@DDuggan21). Art Stapleton described it as a serious non-contact right leg injury and immediately framed what it does to the room behind Malik Nabers (@art_stapleton). Pittsburgh's beat noted the loss from the other side, since Austin spent his career to date with the Steelers (@ASaunders_PGH).

Patricia Traina's read of the Giants' latest unofficial depth chart is what turns this from a hard scene into a roster question. Austin was listed behind Nabers at one receiver spot, with Darnell Mooney behind Darius Slayton at the other and Odell Beckham Jr. third behind Mooney (@Patricia_Traina). The player directly in line for those snaps had his best day of camp on the same afternoon: Duggan had Beckham opening with a vintage one-handed grab in individual drills and catching two passes from Jaxson Dart (@DDuggan21, @UnderdogNFL).

Nabers, for his part, was back at practice with no red non-contact jersey (@UnderdogNFL).

What we are watching: how New York fills the WR3 snaps behind Nabers and Slayton. Beckham and Braxton Berrios are the names Stapleton put on that list, and roster cuts this weekend will answer it faster than any practice report.

3. Chicago Has Been Taking Trade Calls on Gervon Dexter

Jordan Schultz reported that the Bears have had trade discussions involving defensive tackle Gervon Dexter, with multiple scenarios in which a deal gets done and sends him somewhere else (@Schultz_Report). Schultz's case for why anyone would want him is a resume, not a projection: 24 years old, all 17 games started last season, 13.5 career sacks and 42 quarterback hits.

Put it next to the rest of Tuesday and a pattern shows up. New England and Houston formally closed the Kayshon Boutte trade (@AdamSchefter), the Giants sent guard Josh Ezeudu to Kansas City for a 2028 seventh (@Schultz_Report, @RapSheet), and Schultz said out loud what the volume implies — he anticipates more of these over the next four to ten days as teams shape their rosters, mostly small deals with a few bigger ones on the table (@Schultz_Report).

For a fantasy audience the interior defensive line is not a draft-board position, but the trade window it opens is. Every one of these moves is a team deciding it can live without a player it liked in July, and the receivers and backs who come loose in that same window are the ones who change somebody's WR4 and handcuff math a week from now.

What we are watching: whether the small deals stay small. Schultz flagged bigger ones on the table, and the next ten days are the last chance for a skill player to change teams before the games count.

4. The Giants Listed Cam Skattebo as the Starter and Left the Rest Wide Open

New York's unofficial depth chart for the preseason finale against the Jets has Cam Skattebo as the starting running back — and then, on the next line, Tyrone Tracy Jr. OR Najee Harris OR Devin Singletary as the backup (@JordanRaanan, @UnderdogNFL). Raanan's own description of that second line is the phrase to hold onto: open competition for carries and playing time.

The practice field says the same thing with less punctuation. Dan Duggan had Najee Harris taking reps with the first-team offense on Tuesday and put the qualifier in exactly the right place — Skattebo is still the No. 1 back, but Harris is looming (@DDuggan21). Pat Leonard had the same reps at "some" (@UnderdogNFL).

A depth chart that names a starter and then lists three interchangeable names behind him is not a settled backfield, it is a starter with a committee attached. That distinction is the whole ballgame for anyone spending a mid-round pick on Skattebo, and it is the kind of split our RB1 model verdict board has to price rather than assume.

What we are watching: whether Harris' first-team reps grow or hold. One veteran mixing into the ones during a light practice week is normal. A veteran whose share climbs through the last week of camp is a timeshare forming in public.

5. Kareem Hunt Took a Visit in Detroit

Free-agent running back Kareem Hunt visited the Lions on Tuesday (@AdamSchefter). That is the entire report, and it is enough to matter this week.

A visit is not a signing, and a veteran back who takes a late-August meeting is usually being measured against the last two names on a roster rather than the first one. But the timing is the point: roster cuts are due this weekend, and a team that brings in an experienced back days before it has to trim is a team that either does not love its depth or expects to lose some of it.

Detroit's afternoon otherwise pointed the other way on health. Sam LaPorta was back at practice after sitting out the past week with a hip injury (@davebirkett).

What we are watching: whether the visit turns into a contract before the weekend. If it does, the Lions' backfield gets a short-yardage body that changes the goal-line picture for everyone drafting that offense.

Arizona Cardinals

• Running back Trey Benson cleared waivers and reverted to Arizona's injured reserve list, which closes the loop on his injury-designation release (@AdamSchefter).
• Center Hjalte Froholdt agreed to a two-year, $20 million extension that keeps him through 2028, which Ian Rapoport framed as one of the line's most consistent anchors getting paid (@RapSheet).

Atlanta Falcons

• The Falcons released their final preseason depth chart and it carries the news: Michael Penix Jr., medically cleared over the weekend for full team drills, is now listed as a starter alongside Tua Tagovailoa (@tori_mcelhaney). The team's own depth chart story says the same in plainer language — Penix was added to the lineup as a starter after being cleared, ahead of Friday night's game in Miami.
• Kevin Knight read it as co-starters rather than a hierarchy (@FalcoholicKevin) and, separately, made the case that Penix has just enough runway to win the job outright before the opener (@FalcoholicKevin).

Baltimore Ravens

• Lamar Jackson on rookie receiver Ja'Kobi Lane, via Jeff Zrebiec: "This guy is different" (@UnderdogNFL). Quarterback endorsements are cheap in August; quarterback endorsements of a rookie receiver in the last week of camp are worth writing down.
• The club announced a 10-year extension of its partnership with Under Armour (@Ravens).

Buffalo Bills

• Buffalo has a left guard. Alec Anderson was named the starter over veteran Austin Corbett, which Alaina Getzenberg described as the clear direction the team's top camp battle had been heading (@agetzenberg).
• Joe Brady said some Bills starters will play in Thursday night's preseason finale, and had specific things to say about Josh Allen's role in that (@SalSports).
• Receiver Skyler Bell will play Thursday after dealing with an injury (@MattParrino).

Carolina Panthers

• Carolina hosts Houston for a joint practice this week, and Dave Canales promised it would be "intense" — Joe Person's framing is that camp is wrapping up with real questions still unanswered (@josephperson).
• The inside linebacker job next to Devin Lloyd is going to the wire. The team's feature on Claudin Cherelus has Canales saying the Cherelus-Trevin Wallace competition comes down to the final week, with the two rotating in and out beside Lloyd as the staff looks for a fit (@Panthers).

Kansas City Chiefs

• Kansas City traded a 2028 seventh-round pick to the Giants for guard Josh Ezeudu, adding offensive line depth from a player who appeared in 33 games in New York (@Schultz_Report, @RapSheet).

Las Vegas Raiders

• Ian Rapoport's read on the Ashton Jeanty ankle sprain, relayed by Underdog, is that it is believed to be "more low than high" — the Raiders remain hopeful he is available for Week 1 while acknowledging there is a chance he is not ready (@UnderdogNFL). Klint Kubiak's own update was that Jeanty is on the mend (@AdamSchefter), and ESPN's report on the session has Kubiak declining to say whether Jeanty starts the year on injured reserve.

Los Angeles Chargers

• Former Chargers starter Jamaree Salyer, who started 40 games in Los Angeles, is being released by Miami with an injury settlement and plans to sign somewhere in-season once healthy (@JFowlerESPN).

Los Angeles Rams

• The best receiver line of the week came out of joint practice work: Nate Atkins described Davante Adams as "virtually uncoverable" against the Cowboys and Saints (@UnderdogNFL).
• Sean McVay, asked about NFL players heading back to college football, gave the quote of the day: "I feel like I took a freakin' gummy" (@LATimesklein).
• Left tackle DJ Humphries, who last played for the Rams, worked out for Washington, which then signed him (@AdamSchefter, @RapSheet).

Miami Dolphins

• Offensive coordinator Davis Webb on Jaylen Waddle's role, and it is as broad a usage statement as a coordinator gives: "He's going to play everywhere. He's going to play every position except offensive line" (@UnderdogNFL).
• The team's account spent part of the day on a Malik Willis connection to Chris Bell (@MiamiDolphins).
• Miami claimed receiver Ryan Miller off waivers from the Giants and waived receiver Tahj Washington (@MiamiDolphins), and is releasing guard/tackle Jamaree Salyer with an injury settlement (@JFowlerESPN).

Minnesota Vikings

• The Vikings signed cornerback Tre Hawkins III and waived-injured Dwight McGlothern Jr. (@Vikings).
• Minnesota's new rivalry uniform debuts December 20 against Detroit at U.S. Bank Stadium, which is the calendar note buried under a day of team-account posts (@Vikings).

New England Patriots

• Cornerback Christian Gonzalez and the Patriots are still talking extension, and Gonzalez said he is disappointed the sides have not reached an agreement with the opener closing in — Mike Reiss has the full story at ESPN (@AdamSchefter).
• New England announced the Boutte trade and welcomed safety Jaylen Reed (@AdamSchefter, @Patriots), then said goodbye to Boutte on its own account (@Patriots).
• Taylor Kyles' scouting line on the safety they got back: Reed is having a strong preseason with four stops and eight yards allowed on two catches and three targets, plus a pass breakup (@tkyles39).

New Orleans Saints

• Chris Olave was slow to get up after going for a deep ball at the end of practice and walked off with trainers (@Kat_Terrell).

Pittsburgh Steelers

• Nothing from Pittsburgh's own field made the wire. The day's Steelers-adjacent item came out of Giants practice, where former Pittsburgh receiver Calvin Austin III was carted off with a knee injury (@ASaunders_PGH).

San Francisco 49ers

• The only items out of Santa Clara were the team pointing fans to its preseason finale broadcast (@49ers, @49ers).

Seattle Seahawks

• Seattle placed safety Bud Clark and offensive lineman Mason Richman on season-ending injured reserve and signed three free agents (@AdamSchefter, @Seahawks).
• Gregg Bell's point is the one every fantasy manager repeats in late August: that is the second and third player Seattle has lost to season-ending injured reserve in four days, which is why starters do not play preseason games (@gbellseattle).

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

• The Bucs' beat spent Tuesday night in Jacksonville taking joint-practice and roster-cutdown questions (@gregauman).
• The team's account spent its day on the defensive line, which is the group Tampa Bay keeps pointing at (@Buccaneers).

Tennessee Titans

• Tennessee signed linebacker Dyontae Johnson and waived/injured linebacker Dominique Hampton (@jwyattsports).
• The Titans showed off a new helmet and uniform (@Titans).

Washington Commanders

• Washington is signing former Pro Bowl left tackle DJ Humphries to a one-year deal, adding 101 career starts of experience with Laremy Tunsil out following a torn triceps (@RapSheet). Humphries had worked out for the team earlier the same day (@AdamSchefter).

New York Giants Running Back Battle: How to Read the Reps

The Giants published a depth chart on Tuesday that answers one question and reopens another. Cam Skattebo is the starter. Behind him, on a single line, are Tyrone Tracy Jr. OR Najee Harris OR Devin Singletary (@JordanRaanan, @UnderdogNFL). Jordan Raanan called it what it is: open competition for carries and playing time.

Start with what the "OR" notation actually means, because it gets over-read every August. Unofficial depth charts are produced for a game, not for a season, and coaching staffs use OR lines to avoid making news. What makes this one informative is not the notation, it is that three veterans are on the same line while the listed starter sits alone above them. A team that had settled on a clear No. 2 would have written a clear No. 2.

Then the reps, which are the only evidence that carries any weight this week. Dan Duggan had Najee Harris working with the first-team offense on Tuesday, and his framing is the careful one: Skattebo is still the No. 1 back, but Harris is looming (@DDuggan21). Pat Leonard put the same reps at "some" (@UnderdogNFL). Duggan also noted there were not many periods with the ones against the ones on Tuesday, which is the caveat that keeps a single practice from settling anything — a light session in the last week of camp distributes reps for reasons that have nothing to do with a depth chart.

Here is what the day established:

Why this matters more than most camp-battle rows: the difference between a back who gets the whole workload and one who splits it is the difference between a weekly starter and a flex you regret. Skattebo's draft price assumes the former. Tuesday did not disprove it, but a veteran taking first-team reps in the last week of August is exactly the shape a committee takes before anyone announces one, and our projections have to hold both branches until the reps say otherwise.
