Yesterday's Five Biggest Stories
1. Ashton Jeanty Was Helped Off the Field, and the Raiders Waited Five Hours for Good News
Las Vegas had the worst-looking afternoon in the league and then, very late, the best turn of it. Ashton Jeanty dove for a ball that was beyond him during a team period, landed awkwardly, and was helped off the practice field by trainers, unable to put weight on his right leg. He did not return (@samwarren83). Adam Schefter posted the video of the play within minutes (@AdamSchefter), and Underdog relayed from Vinny Bonsignore that the Raiders gathered as a team afterward to acknowledge the injury (@UnderdogNFL).
The first reports pointed at a knee. Ryan McFadden's ESPN story had it as an apparent right knee injury, and Schefter and Underdog both carried the apparent-knee version (@AdamSchefter, @UnderdogNFL). Roughly five hours later the diagnosis moved somewhere much better: Jeanty is believed to have sprained an ankle, Schefter and Ian Rapoport reported together, and while Las Vegas is still unsure how long he will be out, it is not considered a long-term injury (@AdamSchefter, @RapSheet).
Both versions are worth holding onto until a team statement lands, because a knee report and an ankle report are not the same fantasy season. What the practice itself already told us is who steps up if Jeanty misses time: Mike Washington Jr. took most of the carries once Jeanty left (@samwarren83). That is the name to file, and it is the kind of rep-count detail our RB1 model verdict board reprices on.
What we are watching: whether Jeanty is on the field for Monday's practice and in what capacity. An ankle sprain that is not considered long-term still has a range from "back this week" to "held out through the opener," and the practice report is the only thing that narrows it. If he is limited or absent, Washington's carry share is the number to track.
2. A Browns Tight End Is Headed to LSU if He Clears Waivers
Cleveland is waiving tight end Dae'Quan Wright, and if he clears waivers he has an agreement in place to play the 2026 season at LSU, per agents Drew Rosenhaus and Kyle Lincoln (@AdamSchefter). Wright is believed to be the first player who could go from an NFL roster back to college football (@AdamSchefter).
The ESPN write-up fills in how quickly this happened. Wright signed as an undrafted free agent, was claimed on waivers by the Browns on Aug. 11, did not appear in either of Cleveland's first two preseason games, and has not practiced in more than a week, with Todd Monken saying an injury kept him out. He entered the transfer portal on Wednesday after he and a group of athletes who filed suit in Louisiana were granted a temporary restraining order allowing a return to college.
Schefter noted there are other players currently in camps, or already cut from them, sitting in the transfer portal (@AdamSchefter). Albert Breer's verdict on the precedent: "This is not good history" (@AlbertBreer). For roster purposes this is a fringe tight end. For the shape of late August, it is a new exit door that did not exist last summer.
3. Cleveland Plans to Name Its Week 1 Quarterback Today
Todd Monken told reporters he plans to announce his Week 1 starting quarterback on Monday (@AdamSchefter, @Browns, @JFowlerESPN). Asked directly whether Deshaun Watson's postgame press conference on Saturday changes the calculus, he said, "It does not" (@DanielOyefusi, @TonyGrossi).
Monken went further on the record, saying of Watson that "I think he emptied his heart a little bit" and that "the moment just got him after the game," while making clear that "ultimately, the quarterback decision will be mine" (@AlbertBreer). Mary Kay Cabot's read is that he still sounds like he is leaning toward Watson (@MaryKayCabot). Breer's read is very different: he went into Saturday certain Watson would be the starter and now is not sure Watson will be on the team (@AlbertBreer).
The market moved harder than either. Odds to start Week 1 posted by Underdog had Watson at 85% and Shedeur Sanders at 15% after preseason Week 1; after preseason Week 2 that flipped to Watson 36% and Sanders 65% (rounding aside) (@UnderdogNFL). Thursday against New England will not add evidence either way, because Monken is going with Dillon Gabriel and rookie Taylen Green and is done playing Watson and Sanders in the preseason (@JFowlerESPN, @MaryKayCabot).
4. The Saints and 49ers Swapped a Linebacker for a Running Back
New Orleans is sending veteran linebacker Deion Jones to San Francisco in exchange for running back Zamir White (@AdamSchefter, @UnderdogNFL). Jones reunites with 49ers defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, and Nick Underhill called it a good flip for New Orleans, noting it was fairly apparent Jones was not going to beat out Ford and Stalbird (@nick_underhill, @AdamSchefter).
The reason to care is the clause buried in Schefter's follow-up: the Saints are adding running back depth "with Alvin Kamara dealing with a knee injury" (@AdamSchefter). That is the whole fantasy story here. Nobody has put a timeline, a grade or a practice status on the knee, and New Orleans has not said anything about it publicly. What the front office did instead is import a veteran back a week before cutdowns, which is what teams do when they are less than certain about the man ahead of him.
We are not moving Kamara on a trade for a depth back, and we are not touching White's price on it either. The trigger to watch is the practice report, not the transaction wire: if Kamara is limited or absent when New Orleans practices this week, the knee is real enough to change a draft slot. If he is a full participant, this was a roster move and nothing more.
5. George Kittle Came Off the PUP List
San Francisco activated tight end George Kittle from the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list on Sunday (@49ers, @AdamSchefter). Ian Rapoport called it a step toward being on the field in Week 1 (@RapSheet), and Nick Wagoner's ESPN story describes it as the most significant step yet in his return from a torn right Achilles.
The team's own Day 16 camp recap is the more useful document, because it is specific about the workload. Kittle suited up in full pads and did individual work only, with no team drills, less than eight months after tearing the Achilles on January 11. Christian McCaffrey also returned, back for the first time since Day 9 on Aug. 8. Wagoner's own practice notes put his workload at about seven team reps including a handful of carries, and carry his answer about the absence: it was always the plan, and "obviously when you don't practice, the way the media works now it's a firestorm" (@nwagoner). Underdog relayed the same message from Vic Tafur (@UnderdogNFL).
Individual drills are not team reps, and neither is a promise about September. But the direction of travel matters at this point in August, and it moves both of these players up in our tiers rather than sideways.

Team-by-Team Camp Notes
Arizona Cardinals
Quiet day in Cardinals camp — nothing notable to report.
Atlanta Falcons
- The quarterback competition is still the story in Atlanta, with Michael Penix Jr. cleared for 11-on-11 work and due to practice Monday (@CourtneyRCronin).
- Za'Darius Smith spent his first Falcons game day coaching rather than playing, grabbing an iPad and handing out film reads. Daniel Flick's report at the AJC carries the on-field version of it: "He was like, 'You could hit this guy with this move here,' and then you go out there and it's working" (@ByDanielFlick).
Baltimore Ravens
- Cornerback Chandler Rivers was PFF's second-best Ravens defender against Minnesota behind Kaimon Rucker: 40 defensive snaps, five combined tackles, half a sack, one pass breakup, and two catches allowed on five targets for six yards (@jonas_shaffer).
Buffalo Bills
Quiet day in Bills camp — nothing notable to report.
Carolina Panthers
Quiet day in Panthers camp — nothing notable to report.
Chicago Bears
- Adam Hoge went back and watched every left tackle snap from Saturday: Braxton Jones played 15, Theo Benedet played 22, and both struggled against Cincinnati backup defensive end Cedric Johnson. Benedet settled in once Johnson came out. Hoge's conclusion is that the Bears cannot be happy with the lack of clarity with one week left to sort it (@AdamHoge).
Cincinnati Bengals
- Backup defensive end Cedric Johnson is the name coming out of Saturday's game from the other sideline. Hoge described him as having a nice camp and credited him with the trouble both Chicago left tackles had (@AdamHoge).
Cleveland Browns
- Monken names a Week 1 starter Monday and said Watson's postgame press conference does not factor into it (@AdamSchefter, @DanielOyefusi).
- Thursday's preseason finale against New England goes to Dillon Gabriel and Taylen Green; Watson and Sanders are done playing this preseason, and the starters rest (@JFowlerESPN, @RuiterWrongFAN).
- Starting defensive end Alex Wright goes on season-ending injured reserve with a ruptured Achilles after being carted off Thursday (@AdamSchefter).
- Cleveland replaced him with Derek Barnett on a one-year deal worth up to $5.5 million, a Year 10 pass rusher who spent the previous three seasons in Houston (@JFowlerESPN). Schefter noted the Browns had been shopping for rush help before Wright got hurt, having brought in Jadeveon Clowney and Za'Darius Smith and lost both elsewhere (@AdamSchefter).
- Rookie receiver KC Concepcion has 27 receiving yards this preseason (@UnderdogNFL).
Dallas Cowboys
- Cornerback Shavon Revel got his first career interception against Arizona. In a team-site interview, the 2025 third-round pick, whose draft stock fell after a knee injury, described getting his confidence back in the knee and in the game; his pick set up a Joe Milton touchdown pass to Malik Davis (@VoiceOfTheStar).
- Clarence Hill Jr. left camp arguing this roster's depth is better than last year's and that Friday against New Orleans gives Dallas a chance at its first undefeated preseason since 2006 (@clarencehilljr).
- Calvin Watkins found the roster math tight in his own projection, saying he went too heavy along the offensive line (@calvinwatkins), and Fish Sports counted four position battles still open for roster jobs (@fishsports).
Denver Broncos
- A week from the cutdown deadline, Parker Gabriel's fresh 53-man projection has open competition at tight end, inside linebacker and safety, plus a new question on the offensive line (@ParkerJGabriel).
Detroit Lions
- Jameson Williams held his second annual Jamo Day back-to-school giveaway in Detroit, joined by Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jahmyr Gibbs (@E_Woodyard).
Green Bay Packers
- Running backs coach Ben Sirmans is not quite done holding his breath when MarShawn Lloyd carries the ball, but Jason Wilde's report is that Sirmans could not be more excited about the healthy camp his oft-injured back has put together (@jasonjwilde).
- Matt Schneidman laid out the week that decides the roster: practice Monday, a joint practice in Green Bay on Wednesday, the preseason finale Friday, and cutdown day Sunday (@mattschneidman).
Houston Texans
- The backfield split is the note of the day. David Montgomery and Woody Marks "might not be 50-50 but will be close," Underdog relayed, citing @jonmalexander (@UnderdogNFL). A near-even split is the least useful outcome for anyone drafting either back.
- Houston plans to sign running back Deuce Vaughn after a workout that also included Blake Watson and Jordan Mims. Vaughn is a former sixth-round pick with 110 career rushing yards on 40 carries and 10 catches for 58 yards (@AaronWilson_NFL).
Indianapolis Colts
- Nothing fantasy-relevant from the Indianapolis beat wire on Sunday; the team account was limited to promotional posts (@Colts).
Jacksonville Jaguars
- Jacksonville signed defensive tackle Tommy Akingbesote and waived cornerback Devon Marshall with an injury designation (@Jaguars).
- Josh Hines-Allen's framing of the joint practices with Tampa Bay, for which the team is offering free tickets on Aug. 25: "Win your 1-on-1" (@Jaguars).
Kansas City Chiefs
- Nothing beyond a stock report out of Kansas City on Sunday: Jesse Newell's risers and fallers from Saturday's game in Tampa was the only Chiefs item on the wire (@jessenewell).
Las Vegas Raiders
- Mike Washington Jr. took most of the carries after Ashton Jeanty left practice (@samwarren83). That is the rep note that matters until Jeanty's status is settled.
- Kirk Cousins took all the first-team reps and Fernando Mendoza took all the second-team reps. Mendoza threw two interceptions: one Hezekiah Masses jumped on a crosser in zone, and another tipped at the release that Greedy Vance picked off (@samwarren83, @theleviedwards).
- Jackson Powers-Johnson returned to practice and is again splitting right guard reps with Caleb Rogers (@theleviedwards).
- Treydan Stukes took the majority of first-team safety reps alongside Jeremy Chinn, with Isaiah Pola-Mao mostly running with the twos (@samwarren83).
Los Angeles Chargers
- Center Tyler Biadasz is on season-ending injured reserve after exhausting all options. Los Angeles also signed receiver Gary Jennings (@RapSheet, @danielrpopper).
- Rookie Akheem Mesidor has the third-best PFF preseason grade among first-round defensive rookies at 81.6 (@PFF).
Los Angeles Rams
- Nate Atkins came out of the second preseason game with Stetson Bennett making a statement for the backup job, Jarquez Hunter having a big day, and the offensive tackle depth getting tested (@NateAtkins_).
Miami Dolphins
Quiet day in Dolphins camp — nothing notable to report.
Minnesota Vikings
- Linebacker Jake Golday has been impressive in both preseason games, and Will Ragatz flagged a rep where he blitzed off the edge and then recovered to chase down the scrambling quarterback (@WillRagatz).
New England Patriots
- Snap counts are the tell in Foxborough. Fifth-rounder Karon Prunty led the defense with 50 snaps plus 12 on special teams in what Mike Reiss reads as a long look for the fifth cornerback spot, and second-rounder Gabe Jacas got extensive work with 37 defensive and 14 special teams snaps (@MikeReiss).
- New England rested Drake Maye and the starters for the second straight week, with Mike Vrabel pointing to a lack of roster depth as the reason, per Evan Lazar's nine takeaways from the win (@ezlazar).
- Reiss also has Christian Gonzalez contract talks continuing and offensive line injuries among his notes (@MikeReiss).
New Orleans Saints
- The Saints traded Deion Jones to San Francisco for running back Zamir White, adding backfield depth with Alvin Kamara dealing with a knee injury (@AdamSchefter, @AdamSchefter).
- Nick Underhill's view is that Jones was not going to beat out Ford and Stalbird, which made the swap easy to make (@nick_underhill).
New York Giants
- Malik Nabers has a chance to shed the red non-contact jersey this week. "That's a possibility. We'll just have to see where he's at," John Harbaugh said, adding he does not think it is a necessity this week with three weeks until the opener (@JordanRaanan).
- Sixth-round rookie J.C. Davis played all 81 snaps at left tackle on Saturday. Harbaugh called it a "big step in his development," and said the staff went in wanting to see whether Davis could handle a full game workload (@art_stapleton).
- Harbaugh on the secondary: "We are deep at corner." Ryan Dunleavy noted that is not what he expected to hear when camp opened, and that the room has pushed up together rather than one player separating (@rydunleavy).
- Rookie linebacker Arvell Reese has the second-best PFF preseason grade among first-round defensive rookies at 88.2 (@PFF).
- Jordan Raanan's takeaway from the Giants' week of work in Miami: "They are no longer the 3 or 4-win team we've seen the last couple years. Their talent is significantly beyond that" (@JordanRaanan).
New York Jets
- Rookie receiver Omar Cooper Jr. has 40 receiving yards this preseason, second among the rookie receivers Underdog is tracking (@UnderdogNFL).
Philadelphia Eagles
- Running back Ja'Quinden Jackson was released from the hospital and joined his teammates for the return trip to Philadelphia on Saturday night, per Tim McManus's ESPN report. He had left the field by ambulance after being hurt on the opening kickoff, and the team said he had strength and movement in all extremities (@AdamSchefter).
- Tanner McKee outplayed Andy Dalton on Saturday, which is the subject of the battle spotlight below (@Jeff_McLane).
Pittsburgh Steelers
- Nothing from the Pittsburgh camp wire on Sunday. The best Steelers item of the day was about a former one: Alex Kozora wrote up Sammie Coates ending Columbia (Ala.) High School's 101-game losing streak with a 41-14 win in his first game as head coach (@Alex_Kozora).
San Francisco 49ers
- George Kittle is off the PUP list, in full pads for individual drills only, with no team work yet (@49ers, @AdamSchefter).
- Christian McCaffrey practiced for the first time since Day 9, taking roughly seven team reps including a handful of carries. Nick Wagoner described a little extra pep in the whole practice because of the two returns (@nwagoner, @mattbarrows).
- San Francisco acquired linebacker Deion Jones from New Orleans for Zamir White, reuniting Jones with defensive coordinator Raheem Morris (@AdamSchefter).
- Rookie receiver De'Zhaun Stribling leads the rookie receivers Underdog is tracking with 109 preseason receiving yards (@UnderdogNFL).
Seattle Seahawks
- Second-round safety Bud Clark broke his ankle on the first snap of the preseason game at Tennessee and will be out multiple months, Mike Macdonald told reporters (@RapSheet, @BradyHenderson). Nearly all 91 Seahawks came off the sideline as he was carted off (@gbellseattle).
- Macdonald said the team also believes second-year offensive lineman Mason Richman suffered a major, long-term injury, and summed up the week this way: "We had three heartbreakers this week, which is tough" (@BradyHenderson).
- Rookie running back Jadarian Price was held out Sunday and is set to sit the preseason finale too, with Seattle keeping him in bubble wrap until the opener (@UnderdogNFL, @gbellseattle).
- Drew Lock started and played the first half with Jalen Milroe taking the second, no rotating, and Seattle's backup offense scored long touchdowns against Tennessee's starting defense, including a 36-yard Elijah Arroyo score on the opening drive (@gbellseattle, @UnderdogNFL, @Seahawks).
- Linebacker Chazz Surratt produced the defensive highlight of Seattle's night with a strip, which Mike Dugar called "super cold" (@MikeDugar).
- All 22 Seattle starters watched in ball caps and shorts. The Seahawks lost 19-16 (@gbellseattle, @gbellseattle).
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- Rookie Rueben Bain Jr. has the best PFF preseason grade of any first-round defensive rookie at 88.8, ahead of Arvell Reese (88.2) and Akheem Mesidor (81.6) (@PFF).
- Greg Auman's read on the tight end room: Cade Otton is the clear starter, Payne Durham looks safe as the second tight end, Bauer Sharp feels next, and Ko Kieft and Devin Culp are battling for a fourth spot if there is one (@gregauman).
- Auman also thinks Tampa Bay would lose Jalon Daniels if it exposed him to waivers, which likely means three quarterbacks on the 53 and one fewer spot for a fourth running back, fourth tight end, sixth receiver or tenth offensive lineman (@gregauman).
Tennessee Titans
- Rookie receiver Carnell Tate is still without a catch: three targets and no receptions in preseason Week 1, two targets and no receptions in Week 2, and zero receiving yards on the season (@UnderdogNFL, @UnderdogNFL).
- Tennessee won 19-16, but Mike Dugar's blunt assessment of the first-team offense was that Cam Ward and that unit "looked very not great" (@MikeDugar).
- Linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. took the ball away for Tennessee's defense (@Titans).
Washington Commanders
- Dan Quinn changed the week's plan, adding a full afternoon practice on Monday instead of the scheduled walkthrough (@NickiJhabvala).
- Jayden Daniels played three preseason snaps, which J.P. Finlay expected Quinn to be asked about, noting there is no right answer for quarterback usage in preseason (@JPFinlayNBCS).

Philadelphia Eagles Backup Quarterback Battle: How to Read the Reps
Backup quarterback battles usually get ignored in fantasy, and usually that is correct. This one is worth ten minutes because of how the reps have been distributed, which is the part Jeff McLane's column at The Philadelphia Inquirer gets at.
Start with what is actually being compared. Andy Dalton has started both preseason games. Philadelphia's position is that this reflects experience rather than a decision, but McLane's point is that the two men have not been evaluated on the same field: McKee has worked with mostly third-string offensive linemen and third-string skill players, and Dalton has not. McKee outplayed him anyway in Saturday's 24-21 loss at New England (@Jeff_McLane).
McLane is careful about the limits of that, and we will be too. McKee missed throws from the pocket and had trouble when pressure arrived. A backup quarterback who looks good behind a bad line for two August nights has not proven he can run an offense in October. What he has done is win the only comparison available, which in a competition being settled inside of two weeks is most of the argument.
The reason to care in a fantasy league is Jalen Hurts. A first-round quarterback is priced on the assumption he plays 17 games, and the cost of being wrong about that assumption is decided entirely by who is standing behind him. There is one preseason game left and a week until the roster deadline, and McLane questions how Dalton could win the job at this point, let alone entice a quarterback-needy team into trading for him.
What we are watching: who takes the first-team reps in this week's practices, and whether Dalton starts a third straight preseason game. A staff that has decided stops splitting the ones. If McKee starts Philadelphia's finale, the depth chart has already moved.
Our QB1 model verdict board treats backup quality as part of the price of an elite fantasy quarterback, not as a footnote, and this is the week it gets resolved.
Injury Watch
- Ashton Jeanty, RB, Raiders (ankle): Helped off the practice field Sunday and initially reported as an apparent knee injury; Schefter and Rapoport later reported a believed ankle sprain that is not considered long-term, with no timeline yet (@AdamSchefter, @RapSheet).
- Bud Clark, S, Seahawks (ankle): Broken ankle on the first snap of the preseason game at Tennessee; out multiple months (@BradyHenderson).
- Mason Richman, OL, Seahawks: Seattle believes the injury is major and long-term (@BradyHenderson).
- Jake Bobo, WR, Seahawks (knee): Season-ending injury suffered in Friday's joint practice (@BradyHenderson).
- Alex Wright, DE, Browns (Achilles): Ruptured Achilles, season-ending injured reserve, after being carted off Thursday (@AdamSchefter).
- Tyler Biadasz, C, Chargers: Season-ending injured reserve after exhausting all options (@RapSheet).
- Alvin Kamara, RB, Saints (knee): Dealing with a knee injury, cited by Schefter as the reason New Orleans added running back depth (@AdamSchefter).
- George Kittle, TE, 49ers (Achilles): Activated from the PUP list, full pads, individual drills only (@AdamSchefter).
- Christian McCaffrey, RB, 49ers: Back at practice for the first time since Day 9 with roughly seven team reps (@nwagoner).
- Malik Nabers, WR, Giants: May shed the red non-contact jersey this week, though Harbaugh does not consider it a necessity (@JordanRaanan).
- Ja'Quinden Jackson, RB, Eagles: Released from the hospital and traveled home with the team Saturday night (@AdamSchefter).
- Khalil Jacobs, LB, Patriots: Left Saturday's game with an injury after 16 total snaps (@MikeReiss).
- Devon Marshall, CB, Jaguars: Waived with an injury designation (@Jaguars).
- Jadarian Price, RB, Seahawks: Held out Sunday and set to sit the finale as Seattle manages him toward the opener (@UnderdogNFL).
Keep Building Your 2026 Draft Board
Four things from Sunday change a draft board before anyone plays a snap that counts: a first-round running back with an ankle question and a backup who just took the carries behind him, a starting quarterback job being named on a Monday in Cleveland, a fantasy TE1 back in pads less than eight months after an Achilles tear, and a Houston backfield split its own beat describes as close to even. These are the tiers those moves feed into.
