1. Aaron Donald Is Coming Out of Retirement to Play for the Rams

Los Angeles is getting the best defensive player of his generation back. Aaron Donald is ending a two-year retirement and returning to the Rams on a one-year deal worth $20 million that can reach $30 million with incentives, reported jointly by Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport on Sunday evening (@AdamSchefter, @RapSheet). Donald told Jordan Schultz he had spent the last 12 to 13 weeks training his body to the point where he believed he could still play at a high level (@Schultz_Report).

The way it landed says something about how close it came to not happening. Schefter reported that Donald left the Rams' offices at noon Pacific without telling team officials what he planned to do, and that doubts had started to creep into the organization before he announced he was, in fact, coming back (@AdamSchefter). Hours later he had passed his physical, been activated to the roster and was ruled eligible to play in the regular-season opener against the 49ers (@AdamSchefter). Sean McVay would not commit to that last part, saying the team will take it a day at a time (@camdasilva).

Donald walks into a front that already added Myles Garrett this offseason; Los Angeles also traded for cornerback Trent McDuffie and signed Jaylen Watson in the secondary (@AdamSchefter). Daniels signed out of Kansas for a $25,000 signing bonus, and Rapoport's follow-up made the point plainly: he earned it (@RapSheet). The confirmation came in the transaction that followed. The Buccaneers released veteran quarterback Jake Browning, the experienced arm a team normally keeps precisely so it never has to hand the offense to a rookie (@AdamSchefter). That is the fantasy consequence worth writing down: every Tampa Bay pass-catcher is now priced on Mayfield's health, with an undrafted rookie who has never taken a regular-season snap as the contingency behind him.

3. Keenan Allen Was Arrested Hours After His Preseason Debut

Colts receiver Keenan Allen is facing two DUI charges after being arrested early Sunday morning in downtown Indianapolis, first reported by FOX59 and carried by Schefter (@AdamSchefter). Online jail records show two misdemeanor DUI counts, and the arrest came the morning after Allen made his preseason debut in Indianapolis' 25-16 loss to Detroit (@RomeovilleKid, @JakeArthurNFL).

Nothing beyond that is settled, and we are not going to guess at the rest. What our wire does establish is the league's position as of Sunday: Schefter reported that after Green Bay's Josh Jacobs and Denver's Jonathon Cooper were placed on the commissioner exempt list, no other players would be added to it that day, with matters involving Puka Nacua, Alaric Jackson and Rashod Bateman still under review (@AdamSchefter). Allen was not among the names moved, and nothing on our wire showed a Colts roster move tied to the arrest.

4. Cutdown Day Put a Long List of Recognizable Names on the Wire

The 90-to-53 deadline landed Sunday, and Schefter's running list of notable players waived or released reads like a fantasy draft board's back half: quarterbacks Will Levis, Sam Hartman and Hendon Hooker; running backs Dameon Pierce, Frank Gore Jr. and Michael Carter; receivers Trent Sherfield, Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, Sterling Shepard, Zay Jones, Xavier Gipson and Samori Toure (@AdamSchefter).

Two of the day's cuts stand out for what they cost the teams making them. The Giants waived Jalin Hyatt, a former Tennessee standout and Biletnikoff winner, and released former No. 7 overall pick Evan Neal in the same afternoon (@Connor_J_Hughes, @Schultz_Report, @AdamSchefter). Tennessee waived Will Levis after being open to trading him for some time, and in the end both sides moved on (@RapSheet, @TomPelissero).

The other half of the story is who survived. Odell Beckham Jr. made the Giants' 53 after a full year out of the league, having not missed a practice all summer (@JordanRaanan). Minnesota kept J.J. McCarthy through cutdown day despite speculation he could be released or traded (@AdamSchefter). And Indianapolis kept former first-round pick Anthony Richardson, the subject of offseason trade talk all year (@AdamSchefter). What to do with a cutdown-day roster: treat Sunday's 53 as a first draft. Waiver claims land Monday, veterans who were released without waivers can re-sign to practice squads, and several teams told players they would be back. Our advice is to price the designations before the cuts: PUP and IR-designated-for-return carry hard four-game floors, and the commissioner exempt list is open-ended, with no return date attached to it at all. The roster churn underneath them resolves in a week.

5. Green Bay Lost Its Starting Running Back and Rebuilt the Backfield the Same Afternoon

The NFL placed Josh Jacobs on the commissioner exempt list Sunday, a week after the Brown County district attorney charged him with misdemeanor battery and misdemeanor criminal damage to property stemming from a May 26 arrest that originally carried five counts (@AdamSchefter). Rapoport carried the league's statement, which is unambiguous about availability: Jacobs may not practice or attend games while on the list (@RapSheet).

Green Bay spent the rest of the day covering for it. The Packers traded for Steelers running back Kaleb Johnson, a 2025 third-round pick getting a fresh start (@JFowlerESPN, @TomPelissero, @Schultz_Report). Arizona Cardinals

• Arizona added a tight end on cutdown day, trading with Jacksonville for Hunter Long, a former third-round pick (@RapSheet).

Atlanta Falcons

Buffalo Bills

Carolina Panthers

• Carolina's roster came out with two notable subtractions: linebacker Trevin Wallace was waived and receiver David Moore was released (@josephperson).

Chicago Bears

• The left tackle competition lost its front-runner. Chicago is releasing Jedrick Wills, who did not play in the finale at Tennessee, which leaves the job open — and Courtney Cronin is openly unsure whether Kiran Amegadjie was auditioning for other teams on Saturday night or sticks (@AdamSchefter, @CourtneyRCronin).
• The Bears traded defensive tackle Gervon Dexter to Atlanta for cornerback Clark Phillips III and a fifth-round pick, having signed three defensive tackles in free agency and drafted another (@AdamSchefter, @BradBiggs).

Cincinnati Bengals

• The Browns' official roster release settles the longest-running quarterback question in camp: Deshaun Watson is the starter, Shedeur Sanders is the backup, and Cleveland is carrying three quarterbacks with six receivers and three tight ends, with Harold Fannin Jr. leading the tight end room (@Browns).
• Dillon Gabriel is on injured reserve. He hurt his back in the preseason finale, had pain the next day and underwent an MRI (@AdamSchefter, @AdamSchefter). Mary Kay Cabot reports he is out at least four games and that rookie Taylen Green is QB3 to start the season, with tight end Joe Royer on the non-football injury list, designated to return (@MaryKayCabot).
• Cleveland waived receiver Luke Floriea, a camp favorite who scored three touchdowns across the last two preseason games (@JFowlerESPN).
• Cornerback Michael Coats, who never played high school football and arrived undrafted out of West Virginia, made the 53 (@AdamSchefter).

Dallas Cowboys

• The backfield is the usage story. Dallas waived Jaydon Blue and Israel Abanikanda, leaving Javonte Williams, Malik Davis and Hunter Luepke in the room, with Todd Archer expecting practice-squad callups at the position on gamedays (@AdamSchefter, @toddarcher).
• Dallas traded 2027 third- and sixth-round picks to Pittsburgh for offensive tackle Broderick Jones and a 2027 fourth. Jones played all 603 of his snaps at left tackle last season before a Week 12 neck injury ended his year (@dallascowboys).
• The receiver room turned over at the bottom: veteran Marquez Valdes-Scantling was released and seventh-round pick Anthony Smith was waived, while undrafted rookie Camden Brown made the initial 53 after an outstanding camp (@Schultz_Report, @toddarcher, @jonmachota).
• Edge rusher Sam Williams was released; Archer's read is that the Von Miller addition took the spot (@toddarcher). Tight end Michael Trigg was cut with plans to bring him back to the practice squad (@calvinwatkins).

Denver Broncos

• The NFL placed outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper on the commissioner exempt list. Cooper was involved in a pair of domestic incidents over the summer, was arrested twice and faces five charges, including second-degree felony assault (@AdamSchefter).
• Denver's initial 53 breaks down as 26 on offense, 25 on defense and two specialists. Four draft picks made it, and for only the second time in 23 seasons no undrafted rookie did. General manager George Paton called the roster "a puzzle" that is still ongoing (@Broncos).

Detroit Lions

• Dan Campbell said he is not worried about kicker Jake Bates after missed extra points, and explained the playing time — or lack of it — for several players from Saturday's game (@davebirkett).

Green Bay Packers

• Josh Jacobs is on the commissioner exempt list and may not practice or attend games while he is on it (@AdamSchefter, @RapSheet).
• Green Bay traded for Steelers running back Kaleb Johnson the same day (@JFowlerESPN, @Schultz_Report), and added tight end Mark Redman from the Rams for a 2028 seventh-round pick (@AdamSchefter).
• Micah Parsons went to Reserve/PUP as he recovers from a torn ACL, which rules him out for the first four games (@AdamSchefter).

Indianapolis Colts

• Anthony Richardson survived cutdown day. Despite being the subject of offseason trade speculation, he is on the initial 53 (@AdamSchefter).

Los Angeles Chargers

• Tony Jefferson was released and then kept. After trading away a defensive lineman and a cornerback in two separate deals and opening two roster spots, the Chargers pivoted and kept the veteran safety on the 53 (@AdamSchefter, @AdamSchefter).
• Those two trades: rookie cornerback Avery Smith to Seattle for a 2027 sixth-round pick (@TomPelissero) and defensive tackle TeRah Edwards to Carolina (@RapSheet).

Los Angeles Rams

• Aaron Donald is back. He passed his physical Sunday, was activated to the roster and is eligible for the opener against San Francisco, though McVay would only say the team will take it a day at a time (@AdamSchefter, @camdasilva).

• Two trades closed the roster. Offensive tackle Broderick Jones and a 2027 fourth-round pick went to Dallas for 2027 third- and sixth-round picks, and running back Kaleb Johnson went to Green Bay for a 2028 sixth (@steelers, @JFowlerESPN).

Seattle Seahawks

Camp Battles Tracker

Cutdown day settled several of the NFL camp battles we have been tracking all month, and decided two more by release rather than by reps. Here is where each one stands and what it costs a fantasy roster.

Cleveland Browns Quarterback Battle: How to Read the Reps

Cleveland went into the weekend with four quarterbacks and a decision nobody wanted to make. It came out of it with three, an answer, and an injury nobody saw coming.

Take the sequence in order, because the order is the whole story. Dillon Gabriel was firmly QB3 while the competition centered on Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders, then he threw three touchdowns in the preseason finale and drew praise from Todd Monken for his preparation (@DanielOyefusi). Jeremy Fowler then had him set to make the initial 53 (@JFowlerESPN), and rookie Taylen Green was reported in as well, which briefly meant Cleveland was carrying all four (@DanielOyefusi, @MaryKayCabot).

Then the medical report caught up. Gabriel had hurt his back in that same finale, had pain the following day and underwent an MRI serious enough to put him on injured reserve, designated for return (@AdamSchefter, @AdamSchefter). Cabot's write-up puts the absence at a minimum of four games and slots Green in as QB3 behind the two names that mattered all summer (@MaryKayCabot).

The team's own roster release is the cleanest statement of where it landed: Watson is the starter and Sanders is the backup (@Browns). That is worth separating from the noise, because the preseason numbers pointed a different direction and a big finale from a third-stringer is the easiest thing in August to over-read. Three touchdowns against opponents who were themselves fighting for roster spots did not move the depth chart; it earned a roster spot that an MRI then took back.

For anyone drafting Cleveland this week, our projections get built off Watson, not off a competition. The pass-catching group — six receivers and three tight ends, with Harold Fannin Jr. leading the tight end room — is being thrown to by Watson, not by a competition. The one thread still live is the offensive line in front of him: Scott Petrak's notes have rookie Austin Barber drawing raves since moving to right guard, with Monken leaning toward veteran Teven Jenkins but not calling it finished before the September 13 opener at Jacksonville (@ScottPetrak).

• Tank Dell, WR, Texans (knee): Placed on injured reserve, designated to return, as his recovery continues (@AdamSchefter).
• Zach Charbonnet, RB, Seahawks: On the physically unable to perform list; out at least the first four games (@AdamSchefter).
• Jordyn Tyson, WR, Saints (hamstring): On injured reserve; New Orleans' first-round pick will miss at least the first four games (@AdamSchefter).
• Dillon Gabriel, QB, Browns (back): Hurt in the preseason finale, MRI'd after pain the next day, on IR designated for return for at least four games (@AdamSchefter, @MaryKayCabot).
• Micah Parsons, LB, Packers (ACL): Moved to Reserve/PUP and ruled out for Green Bay's first four games (@AdamSchefter).
