Yesterday's Five Biggest Stories
1. The Raiders Named Kirk Cousins Their Week 1 Starter Over Fernando Mendoza
Klint Kubiak made it official Wednesday: Kirk Cousins is the Raiders' starting quarterback for Week 1 against Miami (@AdamSchefter, @RapSheet). That leaves Fernando Mendoza, the No. 1 overall pick, on the bench for the opener — and Adam Schefter reported this was Las Vegas's plan the whole way, not a competition Mendoza lost late (@AdamSchefter).
The historical marker is real: the last six quarterbacks taken first overall started on opening day, and Mendoza will end that run (@AdamSchefter). He is the first No. 1 pick since Baker Mayfield to sit in Week 1 (@PFF).
Kubiak framed the decision as earned rather than default: Cousins "played really good football," came off a strong offseason and camp, and "earned it," with Kubiak adding he is happy with all three of his quarterbacks (@AdamSchefter, @samwarren83). The Raiders posted it themselves under a two-word headline — "QB1. Kirk Cousins." (@Raiders).
For fantasy purposes the useful part is the phrase "all along." A staff that planned a veteran bridge in July does not usually abandon it in September, so the Raiders' pass-catchers project against Cousins's timing and depth-of-target profile for the near term rather than a rookie's.
2. Joe Milton Is Back on the Cowboys' Practice Squad
The most-reported transaction of the day was a backup quarterback returning to the building he just left. Dallas re-signed Joe Milton to its practice squad Wednesday afternoon, confirmed within minutes by Adam Schefter, Ian Rapoport and the team's own beat (@AdamSchefter, @RapSheet, @jonmachota).
Jordan Schultz added the detail that matters for how Dallas thinks about the position: the 26-year-old "drew interest from most NFL teams but wanted to stay in Dallas" (@Schultz_Report).
That closes the only sustained drama of the Cowboys' summer, which ran through waivers and back again inside a week. Clarence Hill Jr. called it a front-office win (@clarencehilljr); the local read is that a quiet camp has raised expectations rather than lowered them ahead of the Sunday night opener against the Giants (@AdamSchefter).
3. The Allen Family's Seahawks Ownership Is Ending
Seattle spent Wednesday saying thank you. The team posted a tribute to the Allen family for "nearly 30 years" of leadership, then a second, longer message crediting Paul and Jody Allen for three decades of stewardship (@Seahawks, @Seahawks).
The club's own release explains why: the franchise is being sold by the Paul G. Allen estate to the Khosla family, a sale the club says is expected to be finalized later this week (seahawks.com). Paul Allen bought the team in 1997 and owned it until his death in 2018; his sister Jody Allen has led the organization for the eight seasons since. The Allen era produced two Super Bowl titles, XLVIII and LX.
Nothing here changes a lineup this week. It changes who signs off on the next decade of them, which is worth knowing before the offseason cycle that follows this one.
4. George Kittle Boarded the Flight to Australia
The 49ers left for their Week 1 game against the Rams in Australia on Wednesday night, and George Kittle was on the plane. Ian Rapoport reported the tight end made the trip after two positive days of practice and is trending in the right direction to play; Nick Bosa, ramping back up from his knee, traveled as well (@RapSheet). Underdog tied the trend specifically to Kittle's Achilles (@UnderdogNFL).
Wednesday's practice was the fullest San Francisco has had in a long while — Bosa, Kittle, Kyle Juszczyk and Mike Evans were all on the field, and by the end of the day every 49ers star eligible to return had returned (@MaioccoNBCS, @LombardiHimself).
One scheduling wrinkle worth filing: the Rams do not leave for Australia until next Wednesday, a full week behind the 49ers (@AdamSchefter). Two teams are preparing for the same game on very different clocks.
5. Detroit's Backfield Behind Jahmyr Gibbs Is Almost Empty
Field Yates laid out the Lions running back room in three lines: Jahmyr Gibbs, Jacob Saylors (two career NFL carries) and Sione Vaki (seven career NFL carries) (@FieldYates). Detroit also waived center Seth McLaughlin and running back Jabari Small on Wednesday (@AdamSchefter, @Lions).
That is the follow-on from Isiah Pacheco's move to injured reserve, which led this page yesterday (September 2 edition). The question was who absorbs the work; Wednesday's answer is that Detroit has not yet brought in anyone who obviously does.
Gibbs was already a first-round fantasy asset. A room with nine combined career carries behind him is the version of his workload nobody drafted for, and it is the single most valuable roster fact on this page today.

Team-by-Team Camp Notes
Arizona Cardinals
Quiet day in Cardinals camp — nothing notable to report.
Atlanta Falcons
- Atlanta kept four quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, and GM Ian Cunningham spent his Wednesday media session explaining it: injury risk around Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa, plus preseason production from Cooper Rush and undrafted rookie Jack Strand, who Cunningham judged unlikely to clear waivers (@willmcfadden, atlantafalcons.com).
- Cunningham set the bar for the season out loud: "We're competing to make the playoffs. ... That's the main goal" (@ByDanielFlick, @marcraimondi).
- Bijan Robinson landed at No. 3 on the NFL Top 100, the team account noted (@AtlantaFalcons).
- Roster churn on the practice squad: Khalid Kareem, Zach Harrison and Jammie Robinson signed; Cam Sample and Cobee Bryant released (@AtlantaFalcons).
Baltimore Ravens
- Zay Flowers was the only player on the 53-man roster not practicing Wednesday, but he ran the length of the field on the side — usually the sign a receiver is close (@jamisonhensley, @jeffzrebiec).
- Baltimore had 52 of 53 on the practice field with 11 days until the opener in Indianapolis (@jamisonhensley).
- Eric DeCosta said he is "optimistic" about an extension for Lamar Jackson: "We would love to get a deal done as soon as possible" (@jeffzrebiec).
- The center job looks decided by reps rather than announcement — Gwyn has taken the first-team work through camp and the preseason, which points to a Week 1 start (@brianwacker1).
- DeCosta also said the club is "very disappointed" about the Rashod Bateman situation, reported it to the league immediately, and is awaiting the league's investigation (@jeffzrebiec).
Buffalo Bills
Quiet day in Bills camp — nothing notable to report.
Carolina Panthers
- Dave Canales is "very optimistic" that Jonathon Brooks will be available for Week 1 against the Bears (@josephperson) — the clearest availability statement Carolina has made about its backfield all summer.
- Tetairoa McMillan says he is "almost 20 pounds heavier" than last season, and said the added weight made him "stronger, faster" in college and feels the same way now (@UnderdogNFL).
- McMillan also collected the PFWA Rookie of the Year and Offensive Rookie of the Year awards Wednesday, and set his season goal at winning a playoff game (@mike_e_kaye, @Sheena_Marie3).
- Darren Waller appeared in No. 88 for the first time (@Sheena_Marie3).
Chicago Bears
- Rookie receiver Zavion Thomas has switched to No. 13, and the team account spent the day introducing him (@adamjahns, @ChicagoBears).
- Chicago released cornerback Jaylon Jones from injured reserve after reaching an injury settlement; he hurt a hamstring in the preseason finale (@BradBiggs).
- Dennis Allen pointed to pass-rush improvement without top-of-market edge talent, noting that affecting a quarterback usually takes more than one player winning alone (@CourtneyRCronin).
Cincinnati Bengals
- Shemar Stewart practiced for the first time since hyperextending his knee on the opening day of training camp (@Ben_Baby). Kelsey Conway called him going through team stretch in uniform "a very positive sign" (@KelseyLConway).
- Stewart pushed back on any suggestion he is not working to return, saying "I just want to get back" (@ByJayMorrison).
Cleveland Browns
- Cleveland signed receiver Bryce Oliver to the practice squad (@Browns). Justin Melo reported Oliver was widely considered a lock for Tennessee's 53 before his surprise cut, and rates him an elite special-teamer (@JustinM_NFL).
- Mike Hall Jr. spoke publicly for the first time about the blindside block from Quinshon Judkins and the 10-day absence that followed (@MaryKayCabot).
Dallas Cowboys
- Joe Milton is back on the practice squad, reported across the beat inside a few minutes (@AdamSchefter, @Schultz_Report).
- The Cowboys were in full pads for their last practice of the week, with one more padded session left before the opener against the Giants (@toddarcher).
- Quinnen Williams on the level of competition in Dallas: he compared it to his Alabama days, "going against first-rounders across from you" (@jonmachota).
- The team account walked through the Emari Demercado pickup and the Broderick Jones trade, both framed as added competition in the offensive tackle room (@dallascowboys).
Denver Broncos
Quiet day in Broncos camp — nothing notable to report.
Detroit Lions
- The running back room behind Jahmyr Gibbs is Jacob Saylors and Sione Vaki, with nine career carries between them (@FieldYates).
- Detroit waived center Seth McLaughlin and running back Jabari Small (@AdamSchefter, @Lions).
- Dan Campbell on Jared Goff, via Albert Breer: "His processing speed reminds me of [Drew] Brees ... Nobody makes a more accurate throw under duress than Jared Goff" (@UnderdogNFL).
Green Bay Packers
- Two days in, Jordan Love and new running back Kaleb Johnson already have their handshake down — small, but it is the visible end of a back being folded into the offense on a short runway (@RobDemovsky).
- Eleven days until Tucker Kraft returns to game action (@mattschneidman).
- Micah Parsons handed out his NFL award predictions on his podcast and picked the Packers to win the Super Bowl (@mattschneidman).
Houston Texans
Quiet day in Texans camp — nothing notable to report.
Indianapolis Colts
- Alec Pierce (left ankle/heel), Josh Downs (calf) and Tyler Warren (groin) all practiced Wednesday — the entire pass-catching group Indianapolis needs for the opener (@RomeovilleKid).
- Laquon Treadwell made an initial 53-man roster for the first time in seven years, saying his family "just keep knocking at the door every year" and that making it "means the most" (@RomeovilleKid).
- Treadwell keeps No. 13 and Keenan Allen will wear No. 10; the two talked it through (@RomeovilleKid).
Jacksonville Jaguars
- Liam Coen's Wednesday injury round-up: Jakobi Meyers (hand) limited, Brian Thomas Jr. (shoulder) full on Tuesday, right tackle Cole Van Lanen (knee) hopeful for Week 1, and LeQuint Allen Jr. (soft tissue) would be a pleasant surprise. Coen expects game-day decisions (@ESPNdirocco, @_John_Shipley).
- The practical read for fantasy managers: Brian Thomas Jr.'s week is trending up, Meyers's is not yet, and neither is likely to be resolved before Sunday morning.
Kansas City Chiefs
- Kenneth Walker (ankle) practiced fully Wednesday, and L'Jarius Sneed "did everything" (@UnderdogNFL, @pgsween).
- Chris Jones missed practice with a back injury. Andy Reid: "He'll be all right." Kingsley Suamataia left midway through with an illness (@ByNateTaylor).
- Sneed on being back in Kansas City: "It feels great. Feels like I'm back at home" (@KCChiefs_Matt).
- Kansas City signed DT Marcus Harris to the practice squad and terminated Cole Brevard's practice-squad contract (@Chiefs).
Las Vegas Raiders
- Kirk Cousins is the Week 1 starter; Fernando Mendoza will not start the opener (@AdamSchefter, @Raiders).
- The Raiders are optimistic Ashton Jeanty (ankle) plays Week 1 (@UnderdogNFL) — the note that most directly changes a fantasy lineup this week.
- Klint Kubiak on the right guard competition between Jackson Powers-Johnson and Caleb Rogers: "I see two guys that are going to play for us this year" (@theleviedwards).
- Mike Washington Jr. switched back to his college No. 4 after kicker Matt Gay moved to No. 14 (@theleviedwards).
Los Angeles Chargers
- The Chargers signed former Dolphins receiver Theo Wease Jr. to the practice squad, reuniting him with his former head coach Mike McDaniel (@AdamSchefter).
- Practice color from the beat: Jim Harbaugh and Mike McDaniel went back and forth over a quarterback handoff drill (@krisrhim1).
Los Angeles Rams
- The Rams do not leave for Australia until next Wednesday, a week after the 49ers depart for the same game (@AdamSchefter).
- Their Week 1 opponent lost a defensive lineman off the travel roster: San Francisco's Sam Okuayinonu did not fly and is questionable with a foot injury, which Cam Inman notes leaves 49ers defensive end depth a concern (@MaioccoNBCS, @CamInman).
- Kicker Joshua Karty, who kicked the last two seasons in Los Angeles, worked out for the Jets on Wednesday (@RapSheet).
Miami Dolphins
- Miami now knows who it sees in Week 1: Kirk Cousins, not Fernando Mendoza (@AdamSchefter).
- Receiver Theo Wease Jr. landed with the Chargers' practice squad after leaving Miami (@AdamSchefter).
Minnesota Vikings
- Still the story in Minnesota: the Vikings signed quarterback Max Brosmer, receiver Dillon Bell, running back DeeJay Dallas and edge Kyle Van Noy to the practice squad (@Vikings, @AdamSchefter). The Van Noy addition follows Tyler Batty's torn ACL (@BenGoessling).
- GM Nolan Teasley on J.J. McCarthy's role: "J.J. McCarthy's role is to continue to develop, to improve, and to support his teammates" (@WillRagatz).
New England Patriots
- New England signed tight end Shane Zylstra to the practice squad and waived safety Eric Butler and receiver Jimmy Kibble from injured reserve (@Patriots).
- Taylor Kyles projected the Patriots' gunner rotation off last season and this preseason: Dell Pettus, Charles Woods, Kyle Williams, Karon Prunty and Channing Canada (@tkyles39).
- The day's best piece of New England lore came from Ryan Paganetti, who reviewed more than a decade of broadcasts and found that Gillette Stadium's video board displayed a reversed view of opposing kicks — a second set of offset uprights behind the real ones — and never once during the 52 Patriots field goal attempts he reviewed. Ian Rapoport's reaction: "lol. Diabolical" (@RyanPaganetti, @RapSheet).
New Orleans Saints
- Kellen Moore said Kendre Miller is "a little banged up" coming out of Friday's preseason game (@Matthew_Paras).
New York Giants
- Malik Nabers (knee) took part in individual and team drills Wednesday and was suited up and ready to go during the media viewing window (@UnderdogNFL, @art_stapleton).
- Najee Harris has switched to No. 23, with Dru Phillips keeping 22 (@art_stapleton, @JordanRaanan).
- Isaiah Likely, on going from John Harbaugh's program to this one: 10 practices in 11 days was nothing new, but "hearing how Giants camp was in the past was kind of mindboggling" (@rydunleavy).
New York Jets
- The Jets worked out a group of kickers Wednesday, including veteran Justin Tucker, Michael Badgley and Joshua Karty. They claimed Blake Grupe off waivers and have Jason Sanders on the practice squad, and the beat's read is that the position stays under evaluation (@Schultz_Report, @TomPelissero).
- D'Angelo Ponds worked on a side field at close to full speed in cornerback drills (@ZackBlatt).
Philadelphia Eagles
- Howie Roseman, asked whether this is a make-or-break year for Jalen Hurts: "No, I don't agree with that ... All the guy does is win football games" (@UnderdogNFL).
- Philadelphia reached an injury settlement with running back Ja'Quinden Jackson and waived him off injured reserve; he will be a free agent if he clears (@DZangaroNBCS, @JFMcMullen).
Pittsburgh Steelers
- Aaron Rodgers on where the ball goes: "We gotta get the ball to DK. He's our No. 1 for a reason" (@UnderdogNFL). He added that DK Metcalf and Roman Wilson have had "arguably 2 of the top probably 5 camps on the team," and that Metcalf "has looked unbelievable" (@bepryor).
- Asante Samuel Jr. intercepted Rodgers targeting Wilson in practice. Rodgers said Wilson made a "repeat mistake" on the route: "That's a good learning — because I don't think he's going to do that again" (@bepryor, @FarabaughFB).
- Pittsburgh has not said how it will cover strong safety without DeShon Elliott for at least the next four weeks, and rookie Robert Spears-Jennings expects to be close to the field with only three safeties on hand (@ASaunders_PGH).
- Joey Porter Jr. continues his ramp-up (@FarabaughFB); ESPN lists him among the players whose contract situation is worth watching into the offseason (@JFowlerESPN).
San Francisco 49ers
- George Kittle traveled to Australia and is trending toward playing Week 1; Nick Bosa made the trip as well (@RapSheet).
- Kaelon Black is listed as RB2 on the 49ers' unofficial Week 1 depth chart (@UnderdogNFL) — the clearest published statement yet about San Francisco's backfield order.
- Bosa, Kittle, Kyle Juszczyk and Mike Evans all practiced Wednesday, the healthiest San Francisco has looked in months (@MaioccoNBCS).
- Defensive lineman Sam Okuayinonu did not board the charter to Melbourne and is questionable for the opener with a foot injury (@CamInman, @nwagoner).

- The team's second message credited the family for its on-field moments and community investments, and for "the legacy that will continue to shape the Pacific Northwest" (@Seahawks).
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- Emeka Egbuka (toe) worked with trainers on a side field Wednesday and ran without any obvious problem (@NFLSTROUD, @UnderdogNFL).
Tennessee Titans
- Tennessee added receiver Xavier Restrepo, safety Jerrick Reed II, cornerback Erick Hallett II and linebacker Mohamoud Diabate to the practice squad, waiving Hank Beatty, Derrick Canteen and Mani Powell (@jwyattsports).
- Receiver Bryce Oliver, a surprise cut in Tennessee, signed with Cleveland (@JustinM_NFL).
Washington Commanders
- Dan Quinn, speaking to the media for the final time before the regular season, said he likes the progress of K'Lavon Chaisson and Bill — both on the field Wednesday — and announced Oweh will be back next week (@ZachSelbyWC, @ZachSelbyWC).
- Quinn singled out the leadership of Jeremy Reaves, Terry McLaurin and Frankie Luvu heading into the season (@JPFinlayNBCS).
Camp Battles Tracker
Camp is over, and most of the NFL camp battles we tracked all summer closed with final cuts. What survives into game week is a shorter list, and it has changed character: the open jobs left are mostly specialists and interior spots, while the fights that matter most to fantasy rosters are now splits inside a job that already has a name attached. Here is where each one stands and what it costs a roster.
The one to carry into Week 1: the Raiders settling on Kirk Cousins removes the last big quarterback question from the board, which makes Detroit's thinned-out backfield and Atlanta's four-deep quarterback room the only unresolved situations on this list with real fantasy consequences.
| Battle | Team | Latest | Fantasy stakes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starting quarterback | Raiders | Settled: Kirk Cousins named the Week 1 starter, with Fernando Mendoza's debut pushed back (@AdamSchefter) | Every Las Vegas pass-catcher's Week 1 projection |
| Quarterback room | Falcons | Four kept on the 53 — Michael Penix Jr., Tua Tagovailoa, Cooper Rush, Jack Strand — with no starter named (@willmcfadden) | Atlanta's entire passing game remains unpriced |
| Backfield behind Gibbs | Lions | Jacob Saylors and Sione Vaki, nine career carries combined (@FieldYates) | Jahmyr Gibbs's workload ceiling |
| Right guard | Raiders | Klint Kubiak on Jackson Powers-Johnson and Caleb Rogers: "two guys that are going to play for us this year" (@theleviedwards) | Interior lanes for Las Vegas's run game |
| Center | Ravens | Gwyn has held the first-team reps through camp and preseason (@brianwacker1) | Protection in front of Lamar Jackson |
| Kicker | Ravens | Jake Moody brought in to push Tyler Loop; DeCosta: "We've got to make kicks" (@BaltimoreLuke) | A kicker slot in a high-scoring offense |
| Kicker | Jets | Justin Tucker, Michael Badgley and Joshua Karty all worked out; Blake Grupe claimed, Jason Sanders on the practice squad (@TomPelissero) | An unsettled kicker job days before Week 1 |
| Offensive tackle | Cowboys | Broderick Jones trade plus the Emari Demercado pickup added competition (@dallascowboys) | Protection for Dak Prescott |
Atlanta Falcons Quarterback Battle: How to Read the Reps
Every other quarterback question in the league closed this week. Atlanta's did not — and the way the Falcons handled final cuts tells you they know it. GM Ian Cunningham kept four quarterbacks on the 53-man roster and spent Wednesday morning explaining why (@willmcfadden, atlantafalcons.com).
His stated reasons were two, and they pull in different directions. The first is insurance: "there's some injury risk with those guys, trying to protect against that." The second is that the depth earned it — Cooper Rush and undrafted rookie Jack Strand were productive in the preseason, and Cunningham judged Strand unlikely to survive waivers if Atlanta tried to stash him.
| Quarterback | Where the reporting leaves him | The evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Michael Penix Jr. | The long-term investment, with a health question attached | Named among the injury risks the roster is insuring against; head coach Kevin Stefanski said he has "done a great job" preparing and credited his meeting work despite limited full-team reps |
| Tua Tagovailoa | The other insured starter-caliber option | Also named among the injury risks; unavailable during training camp because of injury |
| Cooper Rush | Kept on production | Signed early in camp, productive in preseason games |
| Jack Strand | Kept because he would have been claimed | Undrafted rookie, impressive enough that waivers were a real risk |
The sentence to hold onto is Cunningham's answer about the evaluation itself: "The more reps, the more evaluations we can get, the better, right." A front office that already knew its Week 1 starter would not say that four days from game week. Keeping four passers is expensive in roster spots, and teams only pay that price when the answer is genuinely still open.
Our projections treat an unresolved quarterback room as a spread rather than a point, and this is the case that spread exists for — the Falcons' receivers and backs carry more variance right now than their season-long ranks suggest. The honest limit: none of this is a rep count. No Atlanta beat report Wednesday put a number on who took the first-team snaps, and until that surfaces, the roster construction is the strongest signal available. What we will watch is Atlanta's first-team walkthrough reporting early next week, which will settle this faster than another GM press conference.

Keep Building Your 2026 Draft Board
Wednesday's wire was the sound of rosters closing rather than opening. The Raiders picked the veteran, the Cowboys re-signed the quarterback they had just let walk, the Jets auditioned four kickers, and the only rooms still genuinely unsettled — Atlanta's at quarterback, Detroit's at running back — are unsettled because of who is missing, not who is competing. Those are the tiers these choices feed into.
