1. The Rams Traded a Running Back for a Receiver They Already Knew

Los Angeles reacquired Tutu Atwell from Miami on Thursday, sending running back Jarquez Hunter to the Dolphins in exchange (@AdamSchefter, @MiamiDolphins). Atwell spent his first five NFL seasons with the Rams before signing with Miami in free agency in March, and the team's own write-up of the deal has Sean McVay framing it as receiver depth: he said it would be good to bring Atwell back and wished Hunter well (@StuJRams).

Two things in McVay's postgame are worth more than the transaction itself. Asked whether re-acquiring Atwell was pre-emptive in case Puka Nacua is suspended, McVay said it had nothing to do with that. And on the backfield Hunter just left, McVay said he has a good feel for the top three backs and that Jordan Waters and Dean Connors both showed they are real factors — which is the plainest explanation for why a running back was the piece Los Angeles could spend.

2. Dillon Gabriel Threw Three Touchdowns in a Half With Cleveland's Last Roster Spots Open

Gabriel was 12-of-15 for 186 yards with three touchdowns, no interceptions and a 157.9 passer rating in the first half of the Browns' preseason finale against New England (@AdamSchefter, @UnderdogNFL). Ian Rapoport's reaction to the same half was three flame emojis (@RapSheet).

The timing is what makes it news rather than a box score. Scott Petrak's preview of the game laid out the stakes: neither team played starters, the deadline to reach 53 is Sunday evening, and Gabriel and rookie Taylen Green were competing for the quarterback spot behind Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders, with Gabriel starting and Green taking over (@ScottPetrak). Daniel Oyefusi, writing after the half, said Gabriel had a good camp and that he would keep four quarterbacks barring a trade offer, while acknowledging that carrying four is close to unheard of (@DanielOyefusi). Green got his turn and flashed the athleticism the beat has been describing all month (@UnderdogNFL).

3. Carnell Tate Saw 12 Targets in One Joint Practice

Tennessee's receiver finished the Titans-Bears joint practice with 12 targets, seven catches and two touchdowns, per Easton Freeze's charting of the session (@eastonfreeze, @UnderdogNFL).

A dozen targets in a single practice is the kind of number that only shows up when an offense is deliberately feeding someone, and it is the most useful rep-allocation signal on the entire board from Thursday. Chicago's side of the same session was busy in the other direction: Caleb Williams opened 9-of-11 with six straight completions and eight different receivers catching a pass (@AdamHoge).

4. Josh Jacobs Was Formally Charged, and Green Bay Signed a Tight End the Same Afternoon

The Brown County District Attorney formally charged Packers running back Josh Jacobs with misdemeanor battery and misdemeanor criminal damage to property in connection with his May arrest, according to Wisconsin court records (@AdamSchefter, @RobDemovsky). Tom Pelissero reported that Jacobs was originally booked on five charges, including felony strangulation, and now faces the two reduced counts; the NFL has been monitoring the matter, which remains under review (@TomPelissero, ESPN).

Hours earlier, Green Bay had agreed to a one-year deal with free-agent tight end Jonnu Smith, who arrives with 345 career catches and 30 touchdowns (@AdamSchefter, @Schultz_Report). Nothing in the reporting ties the two moves together, and neither should be read as a comment on the other. What is not speculative is the availability question: the league's review is open, the charges are unresolved, and at least one Packers beat writer has already written that a release would have to follow if the reported evidence holds up (@zachkruse2). Anyone drafting the Green Bay backfield is drafting that uncertainty with it.

5. Alec Pierce Came Off PUP With the Opener in Sight

Indianapolis removed Pierce from the active/physically unable to perform list on Thursday, five months after ankle and heel surgery (@AdamSchefter, @Colts, @mchappell51).

The ramp is deliberately slow. Kevin Bowen watched the session and wrote it up: Pierce caught a handful of balls in warmups and individual periods, then finished his day on the side with the athletic trainers while general manager Chris Ballard watched (@KBowen1070). Pierce called Week 1 the goal and said this was the longest he had been away from football in his career, with roughly six or seven practices left before the September 13 opener. When healthy he has played north of 90 percent of Indianapolis' offensive snaps, so the open question is not whether he is on the roster — it is how much of that workload he can absorb before September 13.

Arizona Cardinals

• Jeremiyah Love's ankle is trending in the right direction for Week 1, per Gambo (@UnderdogNFL).
• Donnie Druin's rundown of the quarterback plan for the preseason finale at Green Bay on Friday: Jacoby Brissett is not expected to dress, along with most of the starters, Gardner Minshew is expected to play about a quarter, and Kedon Slovis takes the rest. Carson Beck has not thrown in practice in a week with a rib injury (@DonnieDruin).

Atlanta Falcons

Quiet day in Falcons camp — nothing notable to report.

Baltimore Ravens

• The Ravens' account teased its Wired episode around the moment the team learned Zay Flowers had signed his extension (@Ravens).
• Baltimore's own posts carried the day otherwise, including the wardrobe note for the last preseason action (@Ravens) and a Wired feature on Ja'Kobi Lane (@Ravens). No beat reporting cleared our wire from Baltimore on Thursday.

Buffalo Bills

• Head coach Joe Brady closed a secondary question before it opened. Asked whether there is a competition at CB2, Brady said of Maxwell Hairston: "He's our starting corner" (@JoeBuscaglia).
• Shane Buechele took the quarterback snaps in the finale. Sal Capaccio's note on him is a nice piece of roster texture: he has been with the team since 2023, was released and stayed on the practice squad, and told Capaccio that when you are excited to go to work every day, "it's hard to leave" (@SalSports).
• Buffalo came back to beat Pittsburgh at home to close the preseason, with an interception along the way (@BuffaloBills, @BuffaloBills, @BuffaloBills).

Carolina Panthers

• The only Panthers-tagged report on our wire Thursday came out of their joint practice with Houston: Texans tackle Braden Smith's plantar fascia issue is expected to cost only a couple of weeks, and a league source told Aaron Wilson he avoided a long-term injury (@AaronWilson_NFL).

Chicago Bears

• Caleb Williams opened the joint practice with Tennessee 9-of-11, including six straight completions, with eight different receivers catching a pass; the two incompletions were a throwaway and a drop (@AdamHoge, @UnderdogNFL).
• The starters scored on three straight plays in the low red zone — a Swift run, a Kmet catch and a Zavion Thomas catch. Adam Hoge also had a sliding Kaden Davis catch, Bagent getting more work and a Jahdae Walker toe-tap in the back of the end zone (@AdamHoge).
• Tyrique Stevenson returned to practice and went straight back onto the field with the starters (@adamjahns).
• Head coach Ben Johnson, via Larry Mayer, said this is the best he has seen D'Andre Swift at this point of a year and that Swift is primed for a big one (@UnderdogNFL).
• It got chippy twice: Zavion Thomas took on a good portion of the Titans defense (@patrickfinley), and Xavier Woods drew a flag for a high hit that brought Tennessee players after him (@adamjahns).

Cincinnati Bengals

• Jay Morrison published his projected 53-man roster heading into Friday night's preseason finale (@ByJayMorrison). Nothing else from Cincinnati cleared our wire.

Cleveland Browns

• Dillon Gabriel's half: 12-of-15, 186 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions, 157.9 rating (@UnderdogNFL, @Browns).
• Cleveland released veteran receiver Cedric Tillman after spending two early 2026 draft picks on receivers (@AdamSchefter), and claimed cornerback Mekhi Blackmon off waivers from Indianapolis in the same transaction (@Browns, @RapSheet).

• Calvin Watkins posted his end-of-camp conclusions and they are all usage: Joe Milton has the edge over Sam Howell for QB2 going into Friday and he does not believe both stick on the 53; Durant and Bland are the starting corners; and he has changed his mind on the receiver room, keeping five with Mingo over Brown (@calvinwatkins).
• Dallas hosts New Orleans in its preseason finale (@dallascowboys).

Denver Broncos

• Denver closes its preseason at home against Minnesota (@Broncos). No beat reporting from Broncos camp cleared our wire Thursday.

Detroit Lions

• Justin Rogers has the 2026 Lions injury tracker up and running for the season (@Justin_Rogers).

• The Raiders' entire first-team offense started the finale with the exception of Ashton Jeanty, and Mike Washington Jr. picked up 12 yards on his first two carries (@theleviedwards, @Raiders).
• Mike Garafolo read it off warmups before kickoff: Cousins and the starters looked like they would get some run (@MikeGarafolo) — and Klint Kubiak still would not name an opening-day starter afterward (@AdamSchefter). Full detail in the spotlight below.
• Jackson Powers-Johnson had his shoulder pads off with the other starting linemen while Caleb Rogers worked with the twos to open the second half; Sam Warren's read was that the right guard job could have been decided, or that Las Vegas simply wanted a longer look at Rogers (@samwarren83). Los Angeles Chargers

• Justin Herbert launched a 65-yard touchdown to Quentin Johnston (@UnderdogNFL, @chargers).

New Orleans Saints

• Ross Jackson's final 53-man projection keeps all three quarterbacks — Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler and Zach Wilson — and five running backs, with the interesting calls at receiver: Jordyn Tyson is a short-term injured reserve candidate, and Jackson's own framing is that the hard part of this roster is how New Orleans uses its IR slots (@RossJacksonNOLA).

New York Giants

• The Giants close the preseason against the Jets, and the opponent is sending a backup roster: Geno Smith will not play, and most Jets starters who have appeared this preseason are expected to sit (@BrianCoz).
• Jordan Raanan noted he was the only reporter at all 20 Giants training camp practices, across West Virginia, New Jersey and Miami (@JordanRaanan).

New York Jets

Las Vegas Raiders Quarterback Battle: How to Read the Reps

The Raiders played their preseason finale on Thursday night and told you almost everything except the answer.

Start with usage, because it is the only evidence with a number attached. Kirk Cousins started alongside the projected starters and played two drives; Fernando Mendoza came in with 56 seconds left in the first quarter, also with some starters around him (ESPN, @AdamSchefter). Mike Garafolo had read the shape of it off warmups hours earlier — Cousins and the starters looked like they would get some run in a game most teams treat as a scrimmage for backups (@MikeGarafolo).

Then read what Klint Kubiak said, which was deliberately nothing: he does not think the team needs to name anybody, and he wants to watch the film first — the third straight week he has declined (ESPN). Ryan McFadden's reporting is that the utilization says what the coach will not: Cousins is the likely Week 1 starter. Kubiak's assessment of his rookie was blunt in a different direction — Mendoza, who threw an interception on his second play and has two picks this preseason, could use another three preseason games. That is a coach protecting a rookie, not auditioning one.

The reason this matters beyond the depth chart: the Raiders' skill players are being drafted on an offense whose quarterback is unannounced two weeks out, and a veteran pocket passer and a rookie who has struggled produce very different target distributions. Our projections have to hold both branches open until Las Vegas says the word out loud, and the reps say the word is coming.

One thing to keep straight about Thursday: Ashton Jeanty did not play while the rest of the first-team offense did (@theleviedwards), and ESPN describes him as on the mend. A quarterback taking first-team reps without his lead back is a partial picture of the offense, not a preview of it.
