Yesterday's Five Biggest Stories

1. The Cowboys Cut the Quarterback They Had Just Kept

Dallas made its 53-man roster on Sunday and then took it apart on Monday. Joe Milton III, who was on that initial roster a day earlier, was released to make room for running back Emari Demercado, claimed off waivers from Kansas City (@AdamSchefter, @AdamSchefter). Jon Machota called it a surprising move a day after Milton made the 53, noting he had been outstanding in Dallas' first two preseason games (@jonmachota).

Todd Archer's write-up at ESPN carries the resolution: Sam Howell is the No. 2 quarterback behind Dak Prescott (@toddarcher). Dallas spent August looking at both and kept the one who had not been the story of the preseason, which is what makes Machota's point about Milton's first two preseason games worth a second look.

Two loose ends the beat closed off: Archer's sourcing says there is no truth to the story that Milton asked for his release (@toddarcher), and the Cowboys plan to add him to the practice squad if he clears waivers (@UnderdogNFL). For fantasy purposes the read is simple: Dallas spent a roster spot on a running back and settled the job behind Prescott with a veteran. That is a team comfortable with its quarterback room.

2. Miami Claimed Seven Players and Lost None

The Dolphins were the loudest team on the wire. They claimed seven players — quarterback Brady Cook from the Jets, defensive back Marcellas Dial from the Patriots, tackle Chukwuebuka Godrick from the Chiefs, tight end Justin Joly from the Broncos, tackle Jarrett Kingston from the Texans and defensive backs Taylor Reese and Julius Wood (@AdamSchefter). Joe Schad's summary of the day was two lines long and did all the work: no waived Dolphins were claimed, and Miami claimed seven (@schadjoe).

The churn kept going after the claims landed. Miami signed defensive end Malik Herring to the active roster, a player Schultz reports the team badly wanted once he became available (@Schultz_Report), waived cornerback Ethan Bonner to make room (@AdamSchefter), and brought quarterback Mark Gronowski back on the practice squad — which, after the Kyle McCord trade and the Cook claim, puts four quarterbacks back in the building (@MikeGarafolo).

3. Will Levis Went Unclaimed

Thirty-one teams had a chance to take a former second-round quarterback for nothing but his contract, and none of them did. Will Levis, released by Tennessee, cleared waivers unclaimed (@AdamSchefter).

That is the market speaking on a passer who started games for the Titans, and it is the cleanest illustration of how thin the demand for developmental quarterbacks was on this particular Monday. Dallas released one it liked. Minnesota released another in Max Brosmer (@RapSheet). Miami, one of the few teams shopping, went and claimed a different one.

4. A Herbert Signed With the Chargers, and It Was Not Justin

Tight end Patrick Herbert, waived by Jacksonville on Sunday, chose the Chargers' practice squad. Mike Garafolo reported he had offers from multiple teams and headed to Los Angeles having done extensive research on the starting quarterback — his brother, Justin (@MikeGarafolo). Ian Rapoport's reaction to the news was two words: "Oh, brother" (@RapSheet).

It is a practice-squad signing, so the fantasy stakes are small today. It is also the kind of move that becomes interesting in November, because practice-squad tight ends who already have the quarterback's trust get elevated when a room thins out.

5. Odell Beckham Jr. Made It, and He Is Going to Play

Beckham said he had tears when he realized he was staying with the Giants (@UnderdogNFL). Asked what the role looks like, the answer from the podium was that he will be rotating in and he will be playing (@JordanRaanan). He is still wearing No. 3, with Jalin Hyatt in 13 (@JordanRaanan), and Beckham allowed there will be conversations about that number, which he admitted is special to him (@JordanRaanan).

PFF ran its best rookie receiving seasons and marked the fact that Beckham and Malik Nabers are now on the same Giants roster (@PFF). Nabers, for his part, said he feels real good (@JordanRaanan). A rotational veteran behind a target hog does not change our projections much on its own, but it does put a real NFL receiver on the field whenever New York needs three of them.

Arizona Cardinals

• Veteran corner Sean Murphy-Bunting, released by Arizona last week, signed with Tampa Bay's practice squad with a chance to be elevated to the 53 early in the year; Jeremy Fowler notes the Cardinals still owe him $2 million on his contract (@JFowlerESPN).
• Quiet otherwise in the desert: the team's account spent the day marking Larry Fitzgerald's birthday (@AZCardinals).

Atlanta Falcons

• Atlanta still had not decided on a starting quarterback as of Monday, per Schefter (@UnderdogNFL). Every Falcons skill player's projection is downstream of that call.
• The Falcons waived defensive lineman Zach Harrison, which Kevin Knight called an absolute shocker given Harrison was arguably their best interior player last season (@FalcoholicKevin, @FalcoholicKevin).
• Running back Tyler Goodson, a surprise cut on Sunday, is signing to the practice squad (@ByDanielFlick), one of 15 names on Atlanta's practice-squad announcement (@AtlantaFalcons).
• Linebacker JD Bertrand went on injured reserve and veteran linebacker Josh Woods took the open spot on the 53 (@willmcfadden).
• A piece of cutdown-day trivia from the post-deadline age data Schefter passed along: Atlanta is now the oldest roster in the league (@AdamSchefter).

Baltimore Ravens

• The Ravens signed kicker Jake Moody to the practice squad, and Schefter tied the move directly to Tyler Loop's uneven preseason (@AdamSchefter, @jeffzrebiec). Jesse Minter gave Loop a vote of confidence on the same day the competition arrived, per Jamison Hensley's story from Baltimore (@jamisonhensley).
• Receiver Chris Moore and defensive back Amani Oruwariye, both vested veterans not subject to waivers, are planning to re-sign to the practice squad, and running back Jonathan Ward is doing the same (@jeffzrebiec, @jeffzrebiec).
• Outside linebackers Adisa Isaac and Kaimon Rucker and center Nick Dawkins also re-signed to the squad (@jeffzrebiec). Baltimore lost offensive lineman Corey Bullock to a Carolina waiver claim (@Panthers).
• The Ravens' account posted the moment two undrafted rookies were told they had made the 53-man roster (@Ravens).

Buffalo Bills

• Safety Geno Stone is signing to the practice squad, and Jordan Schultz reports the expectation is that he will be on the active roster on game day (@Schultz_Report) — a practice-squad contract in name only.
• Buffalo signed 17 players to the squad in all. Per the team's own announcement, 14 of the 17 were with the Bills through camp and the preseason; the three new faces are receiver Greg Dortch, linebacker Shaq Thompson and tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. (@BuffaloBills, @JaySkurski). Dortch has 145 career catches and returns kicks and punts.
• Running back Frank Gore Jr. is on the squad as well (@AdamSchefter), along with receiver Ja'Mori Maclin, who Alaina Getzenberg notes had a strong camp and preseason (@agetzenberg), and cornerback Kani Walker (@RyanTalbotBills).
• Color, and a good cause: Josh Allen will again wear caps designed by children receiving care at Golisano Children's Hospital of Buffalo for every Bills home game (@AdamSchefter).

Carolina Panthers

• Linebacker Bobby Okereke signed his one-year deal Monday. Carolina's announcement notes he has appeared in 110 games with 95 starts and has posted at least 132 tackles in four of the last five seasons; Brady Christensen went on injured reserve in the corresponding move (@Panthers).
• The Panthers claimed offensive lineman Corey Bullock off waivers from Baltimore and waived guard Chandler Zavala to make room — a surprise, per Tom Pelissero, on a player with 34 games and 14 starts in three seasons (@Panthers, @TomPelissero).
• Linebacker Tyrel Dodson, a surprise Miami cut who started 16 games last season with 129 tackles and five sacks, is signing to Carolina's practice squad behind Devin Lloyd and Okereke (@mike_e_kaye, @Schultz_Report).
• Veteran receiver David Moore is returning on the practice squad (@josephperson).

Chicago Bears

• Chicago stocked the practice squad with veterans who have played real snaps: edge Marcus Davenport, running back Salvon Ahmed, receiver Scotty Miller and tight end Stephen Carlson (@BradBiggs). Running back Zavier Scott joined them (@JFowlerESPN), as did undrafted rookie guard Caden Barnett (@BradBiggs).
• Defensive lineman James Lynch was re-signed to the 53, with Brad Biggs reporting more moves to come and roster spots available by moving safety Coby Bryant and tight end Hayden Large to injured reserve (@BradBiggs).
• Tackle Kiran Amegadjie, a former third-round pick, landed on Philadelphia's practice squad (@JFowlerESPN).

Cincinnati Bengals

• The tight end room changed shape: Cincinnati released Tanner Hudson to make room for tackle Myles Hinton (@Ben_Baby).
• Paul Dehner Jr.'s cutdown-day takeaways at The Athletic get at the shape of the roster better than the transaction log does: every draft pick was kept for the sixth straight season, and the Bengals carried 11 defensive linemen against only four linebackers — a nod to the five-down base structure Al Golden is leaning into (@pauldehnerjr).
• Albert Breer's long conversation with Joe Burrow covers injuries and the bar he is setting. On how long he wants to play, Burrow's answer was that he is "going to go until I can't do it anymore" (@AlbertBreer, @UnderdogNFL).
• Quarterback Sean Clifford re-signed to the practice squad (@AdamSchefter).

Cleveland Browns

• Todd Monken said Shedeur Sanders and Taylen Green will split the scout-team quarterback reps. Asked whether Green could be active on game days with a package of plays, Monken said the team is not really there yet, but that he liked what he saw in the preseason game (@DanielOyefusi).
• Still the story in Cleveland: Dillon Gabriel opens the season on injured reserve with a back injury, which is what pushed Green to QB3 (@ScottPetrak).
• Rookie receiver KC Concepcion was named the team's Maurice Bassett Award recipient (@Browns).

Dallas Cowboys

• Sam Howell is the backup quarterback after Dallas waived Joe Milton III and claimed running back Emari Demercado from Kansas City (@AdamSchefter, @toddarcher).
• Brian Schottenheimer said newly acquired tackle Broderick Jones will compete with Terence Steele for the starting right tackle job, and that Steele got a call from Schottenheimer before the trade to be told so (@VoiceOfTheStar, @toddarcher). Both were already working with offensive line coach Conor Riley on Monday (@tommy_yarrish).
• Jones said the problem in Pittsburgh was bouncing around positions and never getting his feet set (@jonmachota).
• The practice squad came together with running back Israel Abanikanda, receivers Jordan Hudson and Anthony Smith, tight end Michael Trigg and defensive back Reddy Steward among the names (@tommy_yarrish, @VoiceOfTheStar). Running backs Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah were told Dallas was not sure it would want either back (@jonmachota); Blue signed with the Eagles instead (@AdamSchefter).
• Clarence Hill Jr.'s read on the quarterback room after all of it: Dak Prescott is the Cowboys' quarterback for years to come, with no succession plan and no developmental option in place (@clarencehilljr).

Denver Broncos

• Denver signed 17 players to the practice squad, including receiver Dane Key, tight end Lucas Krull, running back Cody Schrader and fullback Adam Prentice; outside linebacker David Agoha signs as an International Practice Player, which allows an extra spot, per the team's announcement (@Broncos).
• The Broncos lost two players to Miami claims: tight end Justin Joly and defensive back Taylor Reese (@AdamSchefter).
• Outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper pleaded not guilty to multiple domestic violence charges in a Douglas County, Colorado courtroom on Monday, with a jury trial set for Nov. 10, per Jeff Legwold (@AdamSchefter).

Detroit Lions

• Detroit established its practice squad on Monday (@Lions).
• Offensive lineman Mason Miller is being added back after what Nolan Bianchi called an excellent debut at center in the preseason finale (@nolanbianchi).
• Running back Trayveon Williams, who ran for 57 yards on nine carries in that same finale, will not be returning to the squad at this time (@nolanbianchi).

Green Bay Packers

• The backfield question is the one that matters. Matt Schneidman's story at The Athletic frames MarShawn Lloyd as fast, shifty and explosive as a runner and a receiver, and also as a back who has played one game in two years. Lloyd's own line on the workload: "I haven't really had a high workload since high school" (@mattschneidman).
• Josh Jacobs' initial court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 17, and Schefter notes the NFL does not have to wait for the legal process to be completed before issuing discipline (@AdamSchefter). No discipline has been announced. The point for a drafter is the timing: the league can act months before the trial, so Lloyd's ceiling stays live from Week 1 forward, with the honest counterweight being the workload question Lloyd raises about himself.
• Undrafted edge Nyjalik Kelly is back on the practice squad after a solid camp and a strong preseason finale (@mattschneidman).

Houston Texans

• Tight end Brevin Jordan is being signed back to the 53-man roster (@jonmalexander, @AaronWilson_NFL). Houston kept two tight ends on the initial 53 and has now added a third player to that room off the roster churn.
• Rookie receiver Lewis Bond is coming back to the practice squad (@jonmalexander, @AaronWilson_NFL).
• Running back Noah Whittington is signing to the squad after recovering from the ankle injury that sidelined him last week (@AaronWilson_NFL), and special teams veteran George Odum re-signs after 11 tackles and an interception in the finale (@AaronWilson_NFL).
• Houston lost tackle Jarrett Kingston on a Miami waiver claim (@AdamSchefter).

Indianapolis Colts

• Indianapolis lost kicker Blake Grupe, claimed on waivers by the Jets (@AdamSchefter).
• Former Colts special teams ace George Odum is re-signing with Houston (@AaronWilson_NFL).
• Two players who showed well against Indianapolis in the preseason finale had their Monday decided by Detroit: offensive lineman Mason Miller is back on the Lions' practice squad, and running back Trayveon Williams, who ran for 57 yards on nine carries, is not (@nolanbianchi, @nolanbianchi).

Jacksonville Jaguars

• Tight end Patrick Herbert, waived Sunday, picked the Chargers' practice squad over multiple offers (@MikeGarafolo).
• Jacksonville still had practice-squad spots open as of Monday afternoon, with two quarterbacks kept on the active roster (@_John_Shipley).

Kansas City Chiefs

• Kansas City claimed edge Jack Pyburn off waivers from Tampa Bay. Per his agents, Pyburn has informed LSU he is withdrawing his claim in the NCAA's "5-for-5" eligibility litigation and will stay in the NFL rather than return to school (@AdamSchefter).
• The Chiefs lost running back Emari Demercado to a Dallas claim (@AdamSchefter) and tackle Chukwuebuka Godrick to Miami (@AdamSchefter).
• Fullback Ben VanSumeren, waived by Buffalo in final cuts, is signing to the Kansas City practice squad (@Schultz_Report).

Las Vegas Raiders

• Holding the No. 1 waiver spot, the Raiders were expected to claim former 49ers cornerback Darrell Luter; Schefter notes the top claim lets them take as many players as they want (@AdamSchefter).
• Receiver Dont'e Thornton Jr. was placed on injured reserve (@AdamSchefter), which takes a young deep threat out of the Las Vegas receiver picture before the season starts.
• Las Vegas released cornerback Decamerion Richardson (@AdamSchefter).

Los Angeles Chargers

• Jim Harbaugh said the left guard competition between Trey Pipkins and Kayode Awosika is still ongoing, and that swing tackle Travis Burke's emergence has opened up what Harbaugh called platooning at guard (@krisrhim1).

Los Angeles Rams

• Los Angeles announced its 2026 captains (@RamsNFL).
• Running back Dean Connors is signing to the practice squad after an impressive preseason (@MikeGarafolo).

Miami Dolphins

• Seven waiver claims in, zero players lost — Miami was the most aggressive team on the wire (@schadjoe, @AdamSchefter).
• The quarterback room is four deep again: Kyle McCord by trade, Brady Cook by claim, and Mark Gronowski back on the practice squad (@MikeGarafolo).
• Miami released edge Clelin Ferrell and cornerback A.J. Green III, waived five more players and waived tight end Ben Sims with an injury designation (@AdamSchefter).
• The practice squad includes running backs Jarquez Hunter and Carlos Washington Jr., receiver Jalen Reagor and tight end Jeremiah Franklin (@MiamiDolphins).

• The Vikings signed 15 players to the practice squad (@Vikings).

New England Patriots

• New England claimed tight end Cameron Latu from the Eagles and linebacker Darius Muasau from the Giants, then released linebacker K.J. Britt and center/guard Ben Brown, and placed punter Bryce Baringer and linebacker Khalil Jacobs on injured reserve (@AdamSchefter, @ezlazar).
• Latu was a core special teamer for Philadelphia last season, blocking a punt and recording seven solo tackles, and New England got a close look at him in joint practices and the preseason (@tkyles39).
• The Patriots signed 12 players to the practice squad and made additional roster moves (@Patriots), and added veteran punter Mitch Wishnowsky as insurance after a physical (@RapSheet).
• Rookie running back Jam Miller was waived with an injury settlement, which frees him to sign anywhere rather than reverting to New England's injured reserve (@ezlazar).

New Orleans Saints

• The Saints claimed defensive lineman Colby Wooden (@RapSheet) and waived receiver Kevin Austin after their two claims landed (@AdamSchefter).
• Running back Zamir White is signing to the practice squad (@nick_underhill).
• Kicker Charlie Smyth re-signed to the practice squad as an International Practice Player (@AdamSchefter).

New York Giants

• Odell Beckham Jr. is staying, and the role is a rotational one: he will be rotating in and playing (@JordanRaanan, @UnderdogNFL).
• Receiver Braxton Berrios is re-signing to the practice squad with the expectation that he plays in the first game (@AdamSchefter) — a practice-squad deal with a snap count already attached to it.
• Jalin Hyatt is back on the practice squad (@JordanRaanan, @Schultz_Report), and quarterback Jake Haener signs on as the No. 3 with two quarterbacks on the active roster (@MikeGarafolo).
• Receiver Dalen Cambre, defensive lineman Josh Tupou and safety Raheem Layne are among the cuts re-signing to the squad (@DDuggan21, @art_stapleton). New York lost linebacker Darius Muasau to a New England claim (@AdamSchefter).

New York Jets

• Aaron Glenn told reporters rookie Cade Klubnik will be the team's No. 2 quarterback (@AdamSchefter).
• The Jets claimed kicker Blake Grupe on waivers from Indianapolis (@AdamSchefter) and lost quarterback Brady Cook to Miami's claim (@AdamSchefter).
• Running back Al-Jay Henderson, undrafted and unsigned all summer after two rookie-camp tryouts, worked out for the Jets recently and lands a practice-squad spot (@MikeGarafolo). Edge Nate Lynn is signing back as well (@Connor_J_Hughes).

Philadelphia Eagles

• A Zach Ertz reunion is on the table, per EJ Smith's reporting at PHLY. Ertz is nearing the nine-month mark of his recovery from a major knee injury and nothing is imminent, but league sources say he would welcome a return and the fit makes sense after a quiet cutdown day (@EJSmith94).
• The backfield picked up two names on the practice squad: Dameon Pierce, who has 1,684 career rushing yards, is back (@JFowlerESPN), and Jaydon Blue signs after his release in Dallas (@AdamSchefter). Carson Steele and receiver Britain Covey are on the squad as well (@Eagles).
• Philadelphia had more players claimed off waivers than any other team, which Zach Berman reads as the league's verdict on the Eagles' young talent; they lost Cameron Williams, Myles Hinton, Cameron Latu and Kapena Gushiken (@ZBerm, @ZBerm).
• Tackle Kiran Amegadjie signs to the squad (@JFowlerESPN).

Pittsburgh Steelers

• Extension talks with cornerback Joey Porter Jr. have gone nowhere, and general manager Omar Khan said Monday the organization keeps its policy of not negotiating contracts during the regular season, per Brooke Pryor (@AdamSchefter).
• Khan said the Steelers expect Porter to return to practice now that he is off the PUP list, though Alan Saunders notes that does not necessarily mean he will (@ASaunders_PGH).
• The practice squad includes running backs Lew Nichols and Travis Homer, receivers Brandon Smith and Max Hurleman and tight end Lake McRee (@FarabaughFB, @ASaunders_PGH).
• Tackle Broderick Jones, traded to Dallas, said the issue in Pittsburgh was moving between positions without getting settled (@jonmachota).

San Francisco 49ers

• San Francisco re-signed safety Ashtyn Davis and punter Corliss Waitman to one-year deals, and placed cornerback Nate Hobbs and linebacker Nick Martin on injured reserve to make room (@AdamSchefter, @49ers).
• Cornerback Darrell Luter was expected to be claimed by the Raiders, who held the top waiver spot (@AdamSchefter).

Seattle Seahawks

Tennessee Titans

Waiver day settled more of the NFL camp battles we have been tracking than any practice did, and most of it happened on the transaction wire. Here is where each one stands and what it costs a fantasy roster.

Seattle Seahawks Running Back Battle: How to Read the Reps

The most useful sentence written about any backfield on Monday was Brady Henderson's, and it contains a contradiction worth sitting with: Jadarian Price did not play a single snap this preseason, and he is going to lead Seattle's run game (@BradyHenderson).

Both halves are true, and the second one is the one that pays. Henderson's story at ESPN rests on the same premise his post does: the rookie leads Seattle's run game now, and the Seahawks are waiting on Zach Charbonnet to join him in it. On this roster, an empty preseason line reads as a team that had already settled the job in practice.

Henderson's projected split has Price leading with a heavy dose of George Holani and Emanuel Wilson used as the power complement, and he calls it easy to envision something close to last season's arrangement once Charbonnet is back (@UnderdogNFL).

That last clause is the part our projections care about, and it is also the honest limit of what anyone knows this morning: no return date for Charbonnet has been reported. The live question is whether a September lead role survives the veteran's return, and Henderson's own expectation of a split close to last season's is the best evidence available on it. What is settled today is the September part, which is being priced right now by drafters who watched the preseason and never saw Price take a snap.

Keep Building Your 2026 Draft Board

One pattern ran through the whole day, and it is worth carrying into a draft room: almost nobody paid for a developmental quarterback. Dallas waived one it liked, Minnesota released another, Will Levis drew no claim at all, and the young passers who did find work — Hendon Hooker, Jake Haener, Mark Gronowski, Sam Hartman, Sean Clifford — landed on practice squads rather than rosters.
