1. The Cardinals Paid Michael Wilson Like a WR1

Arizona and Michael Wilson agreed Wednesday to a three-year extension worth $75 million, with a maximum value of $78 million and $47 million locked in, negotiated by Andrew Kessler at Athletes First (@RapSheet, @Schultz_Report). The deal keeps him in Arizona through the 2029 season (@AdamSchefter, ESPN), and the team posted it as done later in the day (@AZCardinals).

The production behind it: 78 catches, 1,006 receiving yards and seven touchdowns last season (@AdamSchefter). Ian Rapoport framed the receiver room around him as underrated and talented (@RapSheet), and the team account confirmed the signing twice (@AZCardinals).

Contract news in the week after final cuts is rarely a projection input. This one is. A team that has just committed $47 million in locked-in money to a receiver has told everyone how it intends to distribute targets, and Arizona did it four days after final cuts.

2. Will Levis Worked Out for the Jets

Former Titans quarterback Will Levis tried out for the Jets on Thursday (@AdamSchefter, @TomPelissero). Zack Rosenblatt reported the Jets worked out two quarterbacks — Levis and Jack Plummer — and that the opening under discussion is a practice-squad spot (@ZackBlatt).

That is the next chapter of a story this page carried Tuesday, when Levis cleared waivers with all 31 other teams passing (September 1 edition). A former second-round quarterback auditioning for a developmental spot in September is a marker of how thoroughly the league has closed its books on the position for this season.

3. The Bears Lost Two Skill Players From Their Last Padded Practice

Chicago's final padded practice of the preseason cost it both a starting receiver and its lead back, at least temporarily. Rome Odunze came up hobbling during an install period in the first hour, tried to stay in, and was pulled off by trainers; D'Andre Swift left in the closing stages and appeared to be in significant discomfort (@sean_hammond, @danwiederer).

Both scares softened by evening. Adam Schefter reported that Swift, who was holding his midsection as he walked off, was experiencing a cramp, per sources (@AdamSchefter, @UnderdogNFL). Odunze was believed to be all good afterward (@UnderdogNFL).

The reason it still registers is the state of the room behind them. Underdog laid out the Bears' offense as it stood Thursday: Kyle Monangai injured, Luther Burden working back from injury, and the two players who left practice early accounting for a large share of the touches Chicago has left (@UnderdogNFL).

4. Anthony Richardson Is the Colts' Backup Quarterback

Shane Steichen named Anthony Richardson Sr. the No. 2 quarterback behind Daniel Jones to start the season (@RapSheet, @HolderStephen). Richardson called it an honor and said he is thankful the team believed in him enough to promote him (@RomeovilleKid).

Asked about the trade request he made in February, Richardson said he is here and is not thinking about it (@RomeovilleKid). Mike Garafolo marked the distance traveled: a trade request in February, a confirmed No. 2 job in September (@MikeGarafolo).

For the Colts' offense the practical effect is small this week and large in any week Jones misses. Richardson's rushing profile makes Indianapolis a different play-caller's problem the moment he is on the field.

5. Cam Skattebo Says He Considered Retiring

Cam Skattebo said he thought about retiring after the season-ending ankle injury he suffered as a rookie, speaking on the Up & Adams show (@UnderdogNFL). Patricia Traina wrote the fuller version of the same conversation at Giants Country (@Patricia_Traina).

The football fact underneath it is that he is on the roster and New York is into its opener preparation, with the team off until Monday and that practice closed to the media (@DDuggan21). A back who came that close to walking away is back in a Week 1 backfield.

Arizona Cardinals

• Zay Flowers practiced for the first time in two weeks. He had not worked since the joint practices in Minnesota on Aug. 20, and Jamison Hensley read it as Lamar Jackson's favorite target being set for the Sept. 13 opener (@jamisonhensley).
• Five season-long captains were named — Lamar Jackson, Roquan Smith, Derrick Henry, Kyle Hamilton and Calais Campbell — a change of practice under head coach Jesse Minter, whose predecessor rotated game captains (@ryanmink, @jamisonhensley). Mark Andrews, Flowers, Nick Moore, Ronnie Stanley and Trey Hendrickson join them on a leadership group (@jeffzrebiec).

• On the business side, Pete Guelli told WGR550 the club would host a neutral-site game against the right opponent as part of a partnership with Syracuse (@SalSports).

Carolina Panthers

• Dave Canales is "very optimistic" that Jonathon Brooks, dealing with unspecified soreness, will be available in Week 1 (@mike_e_kaye).
• Tetairoa McMillan is close to 20 pounds heavier and stronger, and Canales thinks that makes him more effective than he was in his Offensive Rookie of the Year season. McMillan's response: no pressure, that is what he was drafted to be (@josephperson).
• Players voted Bryce Young, Chuba Hubbard, Derrick Brown, Devin Lloyd and JJ Jansen captains — the fourth time for Young and Jansen, which puts them in rare franchise company (@Panthers, panthers.com).
• Roster edge: RB Ahmani Marshall signed to the practice squad, G Isaia Glass released from it (@mike_e_kaye).

Chicago Bears

• Rome Odunze and D'Andre Swift both left Thursday's practice early; Swift's was reported as a cramp by evening and Odunze was believed to be fine (@AdamSchefter, @UnderdogNFL).
• The offense around them is thin: Kyle Monangai is injured and Luther Burden is working back (@UnderdogNFL).
• Offensive coordinator Press Taylor put Roschon Johnson forward as the trusted option if the Bears need someone to carry a heavier load than expected (@UnderdogNFL).
• Better news on the other side: Austin Booker was back at practice and took some team reps (@AdamHoge).

Cincinnati Bengals

• Dax Hill is back, with his workload for the opener still to be determined (@KelseyLConway, cincinnati.com).
• Erick All Jr. is back in the offense 679 days after his injury (@CharlieG__).

Cleveland Browns

• The Browns signed CB Michael Coats Jr. to the practice squad — an undrafted rookie out of West Virginia who spent the preseason in Cleveland and will wear No. 39 (@Browns, browns.com).
• Free-agent receiver Luke Floriea, a camp favorite in Cleveland, has a tryout with Seattle this week (@JFowlerESPN).

Dallas Cowboys

• Dallas restructured the contracts of Kenny Clark, DaRon Bland and Jake Ferguson to create a little more than $19 million in cap space (@AdamSchefter, @toddarcher).
• Clarence Hill Jr. reported the room was made to roll over into next year, and that no move is coming with it (@clarencehilljr).
• The 2026 captains are Dak Prescott, Kenny Clark, Quinnen Williams and Brandon Aubrey (@toddarcher, @jonmachota).
• Von Miller will wear No. 40 after coming to terms with Hunter Luepke, who moves to No. 30 (@VoiceOfTheStar, dallascowboys.com).

Denver Broncos

• Nothing moved on the practice field in Denver. The Broncos' day was a national television argument, with Stephen A. Smith calling them a top-three team on the strength of Bo Nix and the defense (@KelbermanNFL).

Detroit Lions

• Nolan Bianchi wrote that Jameson Williams has spent the last month giving evidence his game is about to reach another level, two years after the doubts about his ceiling in Detroit (@nolanbianchi).

Green Bay Packers

• MarShawn Lloyd, on an expanded role: he is ready to play as much as the Packers want him to play, and will take however many carries come (@UnderdogNFL).
• Matt Schneidman posted the reason Green Bay closes certain practice periods to cameras, and Mike Garafolo gave the leaguewide version — coaches do not want the tape out, and teams scan fan video too (@mattschneidman, @MikeGarafolo).
• Uniform note: the Packers will wear their 1923 Classic uniforms when they host Buffalo in December (@AaronNagler).

Houston Texans

• A quiet Thursday in Houston: Aaron Wilson posted a C.J. Stroud photo under a caption naming him the Texans' QB1, and the team account rolled out its 2026 roster photo (@AaronWilson_NFL, @HoustonTexans).

Indianapolis Colts

• Shane Steichen named Anthony Richardson Sr. the backup quarterback behind Daniel Jones (@RapSheet, @HolderStephen).
• Richardson said he is honored by the promotion and, on his February trade request, that he is here and not thinking about it (@RomeovilleKid).
• Keenan Allen is wearing a new number. James Boyd reported the switch to No. 11 after Laquon Treadwell decided to keep No. 13, the number Allen has worn his whole career (@RomeovilleKid).
• Spencer Shrader won the kicking job (@JakeArthurNFL), and the team announced its captains (@Colts).

Jacksonville Jaguars

• Per John Shipley at Jaguars Country, Brian Thomas Jr. is expected to play in Week 1. He wore a red non-contact jersey on the final camp day, but Liam Coen said he was full go with no issues (@_John_Shipley, si.com).
• The rest of that report: Jakobi Meyers is expected to play with his catching work limited, Cole Van Lanen is off the active/PUP list and practicing without a settled Week 1 status, and Coen said he would be pleasantly surprised if LeQuint Allen Jr. were ready.

Kansas City Chiefs

• Right guard Trey Smith is working through a hip injury and has no intention of sitting: "It's football, you never feel 100%" (@mattderrick).
• The team account marked a week to Red Thursday and hosted two Make-A-Wish guests at the end of practice (@Chiefs, @Chiefs).

Las Vegas Raiders

• The Raiders are optimistic about Ashton Jeanty's ankle for Week 1 (@RapSheet).
• Las Vegas signed WR Ronnie Bell, G Evan Neal and DE Azeez Ojulari to the practice squad (@AdamSchefter).
• Marquez Valdes-Scantling, released by Dallas over the weekend, worked out for the Raiders (@ASaunders_PGH).

Los Angeles Chargers

• Akheem Mesidor, who missed a couple of practices and the second preseason game, said the cause was swelling in his leg and that he is now 100% (@krisrhim1).
• The team account spent the day counting down to the opener (@chargers).

Los Angeles Rams

• The Rams released their first depth chart of the regular season, with Stetson Bennett listed as QB2 and Tutu Atwell seventh among the receivers (@camdasilva, Rams Wire).
• Seven receivers made that chart, which the Rams Wire read as the deepest group on a roster thinner at offensive tackle.
• Their Week 1 opponent lost a defensive lineman: San Francisco ruled Sam Okuayinonu out with a foot injury (@MaioccoNBCS).

Miami Dolphins

• Barry Jackson wrote up DJ Herman's position change and the 53-man roster spot it earned him, along with injury updates from Jeff Hafley's briefing (@flasportsbuzz).
• Hafley called practice video getting out disappointing, and said an opposing coordinator once had half his pressures on tape before they played (@UnderdogNFL).

Minnesota Vikings

• Minnesota announced eight captains for 2026, including Andrew Van Ginkel and Andrew DePaola (@Vikings).
• New numbers: Zemaiah Vaughn to 5, Brett Thorson to 19, Jacob Thomas to 29, Chaz Chambliss to 32, Bryce Phillips to 35 and Michael Briscoe to 81 (@Vikings).

New England Patriots

• TreVeyon Henderson (ankle) was not present for the media-access portion of practice and has not practiced since Aug. 24. Mike Reiss counted three practices left for New England before the season opener at Seattle (@MikeReiss).

New Orleans Saints

• The team site posted an updated depth chart before the official release: Spencer Rattler as the backup quarterback, Etienne and Alvin Kamara at running back with Kendre Miller behind them, Barion Brown and Jayden Price returning punts, Brown and Bryce Lance on kickoffs (@Kat_Terrell).
• New Orleans waived RB Devin Neal and EDGE Michael Heldman, reaching injury settlements with both (@AdamSchefter, @Saints).
• Matthew Paras called the Neal decision a mild surprise: a rookie who had shown promise as a pass protector, whose health likely cost him ground in the backfield competition (@Matthew_Paras).

New York Giants

• Cam Skattebo said he considered retiring after the ankle injury that ended his rookie season (@UnderdogNFL, @Patricia_Traina).
• The starting cornerback job is unresolved. John Harbaugh's public answer on Paulson Adebo, Greg Newsome II and Deonte Banks was that it stands where it stands, and Patricia Traina's read is that Adebo and Newsome are the likely pair (@Patricia_Traina, si.com).

San Francisco 49ers

• Matt Barrows mapped the 49ers' receiver alignments: Mike Evans, De'Zhaun Stribling and Demarcus Robinson at X; Deebo Samuel, Jordan Watkins and Jacob Cowing at Z; Stribling, Christian Kirk when healthy and Cowing in the slot (@UnderdogNFL).

Camp Battles Tracker

Most of the NFL camp battles we tracked through the summer closed with final cuts, and what is left going into game week has changed character. The open jobs are mostly backup and specialist spots; the questions that actually move fantasy rosters are splits inside a job that already has a name on it. Here is where each one stands.

The one to carry into Week 1: Seattle's backfield. New Orleans has a split too, but its shape is known — Alvin Kamara and Etienne are the names, Kendre Miller is the depth. Seattle's is three backs with the goal-line work still up for grabs, which is the version that decides who scores.

Seattle Seahawks Running Back Battle: How to Read the Reps

Seattle's backfield is the most consequential undecided job left. New Orleans has a split too, but its names are known and its order is published; Seattle's is three backs with the goal-line work unassigned, and Thursday produced the clearest description of it anyone has offered. Andrew Destin's projection has Jadarian Price handling first and second down, George Holani taking third down along with short-yardage and goal-line work, and Emanuel Wilson mixing in (@UnderdogNFL).

Read that split for what it costs. A back who plays first and second down collects volume; a back who owns third down and the goal line collects the two highest-value snaps on the field. In a normal week that division hands Price the yardage and Holani a meaningful share of the touchdowns, which is why the two of them can both be useful and neither can be trusted as a weekly starter until the reps confirm the plan.

The honest limit: this is a projection from a reporter reading the situation, not a rep count out of a practice. No Seattle beat report on Thursday put numbers on who took the first-team work. Our projections handle a room like this as a range, and this is exactly the case that range exists for — the same touches, distributed three ways, produce very different weekly outcomes.

What settles it is usage, and the first real usage data arrives in Week 1. Until then the defensible position is that Price is the volume bet and Holani is the scoring bet, held loosely.
