Yesterday's Five Biggest Stories

1. Detroit Loses Isiah Pacheco for at Least Four Games

The Lions placed running back Isiah Pacheco on injured reserve with a back injury that sidelines him for at least the first four games of the season (@AdamSchefter, @RapSheet). Tom Pelissero's report carried the same four-game floor (@TomPelissero), and the team's own announcement confirmed the move (@Lions).

Eric Woodyard added the detail that matters most for a return timeline: Pacheco was dealing with an MCL sprain on top of the back injury he suffered during training camp (@E_Woodyard). A knee and a back at the same time is a different recovery conversation than either alone, and four games is the minimum the designation allows, not a projection.

Detroit announced the corresponding moves in the same release, signing tight end Tyler Conklin to the active roster and adding guard Elijah Klein and receiver Dominic Lovett to the practice squad (@Lions). This is the single largest change to a backfield we have seen since final cuts, and it lands with drafts already in the books.

2. Joe Milton Cleared Waivers and Is Now a Free Agent

No team put in a claim. Joe Milton III, waived by Dallas earlier in the week, cleared waivers and is free to sign anywhere (@AdamSchefter, @UnderdogNFL).

Todd Archer laid out what that actually opens up: Milton can join the Cowboys' practice squad, or any other team's, on his own terms (@toddarcher, @tommy_yarrish). Brian Schottenheimer had already explained the thinking behind the room, saying Dallas would like to develop a young quarterback but that carrying two was the call for a team trying to win now (@jonmachota).

Nobody spent a claim on a 32-team audition. For fantasy, the read is what Schottenheimer said out loud: Dallas is carrying two quarterbacks, did not add a third, and is not building a contingency around a developmental arm.

3. Kyle Van Noy Signs With the Vikings

Minnesota hosted veteran edge rusher Kyle Van Noy for a visit (@AdamSchefter, @TomPelissero) and had a deal by the end of the day. Van Noy is signing with the Vikings and will start on the practice squad to ramp up, reuniting him with defensive coordinator Brian Flores, with whom he won two Super Bowls in New England (@TomPelissero).

Alec Lewis supplied the urgency behind it: Minnesota's edge depth had been thin for months, and Tyler Batty's torn ACL sharpened the need (@alec_lewis). Matthew Coller framed it as the payoff of a deliberate plan — Rob Brzezinski told reporters at the owners meetings that the Vikings held back in the first two weeks of free agency specifically to keep options open later, and Jauan Jennings and Van Noy are what that patience bought (@MatthewColler).

A practice-squad start means no immediate snap count, but a two-time Super Bowl winner who already speaks the defensive terminology does not stay on a practice squad long.

4. Atlanta's Goal-Line Carries Are Trending Toward Brian Robinson Jr.

The most actionable fantasy note of the day came out of Falcons practice. Brian Robinson Jr.'s physical running has cemented his role as what The Athletic's Falcons writer called "the new Tyler Allgeier," with the direct warning that Bijan Robinson managers may not like how many goal-line carries the veteran gets (@UnderdogNFL).

This is a reps observation, not a quote from a coach, which is exactly the kind of signal that moves before a depth chart does. Bijan Robinson's volume is not in question; his touchdown share is. A back who earns the short-yardage work in practice tends to get it on Sunday, and that is the single line item separating an elite fantasy season from a merely very good one at the position.

We would not move Bijan Robinson in a draft over this. We would absolutely price the goal-line split into a touchdown projection, and it is the first thing we will be watching in Atlanta's Week 1 red-zone snaps.

5. Aaron Donald's Debut Is Trending Toward Week 2 or 3

Dan Graziano's read on Aaron Donald's return is that a Week 2 or Week 3 debut is more likely than Week 1, though Week 1 remains "still on the table" (@UnderdogNFL).

The respect from around the league is not in doubt. Saints defensive coordinator Brandon Staley, asked about Donald coming out of retirement, was unequivocal: "He's the best player I've ever seen" (@UnderdogNFL).

A ramp-up week or two for a defensive lineman returning from time away is the ordinary path, not a warning sign. The fantasy consequence is narrow but real for anyone rostering the Rams defense in Week 1, and it is worth knowing before lineups lock.

Arizona Cardinals

• Darren Urban revisited the play that cost quarterback Carson Beck the rest of his preseason: the Hall of Fame game sack, delivered by Harrison-Hunte, on which Beck hurt his ribs (@Cardschatter).
• Center Ka'ena De Cambra, who was in camp with Arizona and played all 85 snaps against Green Bay, signed with Houston's practice squad (@HBalzer721).

Atlanta Falcons

• The reps story of the day: Brian Robinson Jr.'s physical style has him cast as "the new Tyler Allgeier," with a direct caution to Bijan Robinson managers about goal-line carries, per The Athletic's Falcons writer (@UnderdogNFL).
• Defensive lineman Zach Harrison was not claimed on waivers and is now eligible to sign to a practice squad (@FalcoholicKevin).

Baltimore Ravens

Buffalo Bills

• Coleman's return is the one to circle. He had been out since the first preseason game with a foot and toe issue (@MattParrino).
• Receiver Greg Dortch, cut by Detroit on Sunday, landed on Buffalo's practice squad. Dortch said the release caught him off guard, having been through it before but not quite like this (@MattParrino, @SalSports).
• Ian Rapoport reported on NFL Network that the Bills have set a high bar for first-year head coach Joe Brady (@RapSheet).

Carolina Panthers

• Carolina finalized its 17-man practice squad by bringing guard Chandler Zavala back a day after waiving him (@TomPelissero). The team's own write-up notes the 2023 fourth-round pick started 14 games over three seasons and was released Monday to make room for a claimed offensive lineman (@Panthers).
• Earlier the same day Carolina added guard Torricelli Simpkins, cornerback Zion Childress, linebacker Tyrel Dodson and defensive tackle Anthony Goodlow to the group.

Chicago Bears

• Receiver Luther Burden (groin) was set to practice Tuesday (@UnderdogNFL).
• Running back Kyle Monangai (knee) remains week-to-week (@UnderdogNFL).
• Chicago signed 14 players to its practice squad (@ChicagoBears).
• Linebacker Devin Bush, who has lined up across from Colston Loveland for six weeks, was asked what he has learned about the tight end: that Loveland has a way of just catching the ball and is really good at tracking it (@CourtneyRCronin).

Cincinnati Bengals

• Zac Taylor's answer on tight end Erick All was the closest thing to a usage declaration anyone gave Tuesday. Offered a choice between a full workload with no reservations and a touch-and-go approach, Taylor picked the first one twice, with zero hesitation (@pauldehnerjr).
• Ja'Marr Chase (knee) and Tee Higgins (heel contusion) will both be limited this week, with no concern about their season status. Taylor expects both to be good by the end of the week, and Dax Hill is progressing (@pauldehnerjr, @UnderdogNFL).
• Receiver Dohnte Meyers spoke about making the 53-man roster (@KelseyLConway).
• Off the field: Jordan Schultz reports Chase's new podcast, co-hosted with Annie Agar, will have Joe Burrow as its first guest (@Schultz_Report).

Cleveland Browns

• The rep worth noting: receiver Malachi Corley was on the end of a deep ball from Shedeur Sanders during individual drills (@camijustice).
• Undrafted running back Davon Booth, who scored for Cleveland in the preseason finale, signed with Indianapolis' practice squad (@AkronJackson).
• Center Kingsley Eguakun, cut by the Browns, turned up on the Giants' practice squad (@DDuggan21).

Dallas Cowboys

• Joe Milton III cleared waivers and is a free agent, able to choose Dallas' practice squad or any other (@AdamSchefter, @toddarcher).
• Schottenheimer on the quarterback room: the Cowboys would like a young passer in development, but carrying two was the choice for a team built to win now (@jonmachota).
• On Von Miller, Schottenheimer said the natural pass-rush ability shows up in one-on-ones and in the limited reps he has taken while ramping up — the first-step quickness and the understanding are visible (@jonmachota).
• Schottenheimer also acknowledged the staff has held back concepts it has not shown, and Patrik Walker's read is that you cannot share with 90 players what you do not want on other rosters after cutdowns (@VoiceOfTheStar).

Denver Broncos

• The Broncos' feature on Bo Nix is a useful read on where the quarterback is entering Year 3. Cornerback Pat Surtain II described the cerebral approach as off the charts and the poise as long-standing, and Nix led a pair of scoring drives in his limited preseason work against Green Bay after an ankle injury kept him out of the AFC Championship Game last season (@Broncos).

Detroit Lions

Jacksonville Jaguars

• Jacksonville restructured defensive end Travon Walker's contract in addition to Josh Hines-Allen's, creating cap space, per Ryan O'Halloran's source (@ryanohalloran).
• The Jaguars signed offensive lineman Eli Cox, safety Kaevon Merriweather and tight end Hayden Rucci to the practice squad, releasing lineman Jimto Obidegwu (@Jaguars).

Kansas City Chiefs

• Kansas City signed running back Nate Carter, tackle Ethan Driskell, cornerback Kader Kohou and fullback Ben VanSumeren to the practice squad (@Chiefs).
• Tampa Bay claimed defensive back Kevin Knowles off waivers from the Chiefs (@TomPelissero).
• Color: Travis Kelce weighed in on a virtual-measurement conversation on Hard Knocks (@HaroldRKuntz3).

Las Vegas Raiders

• The Ashton Jeanty update leads. General manager John Spytek expects him back "as quick as he can," and possibly sooner than outsiders anticipate (@UnderdogNFL).
• Spytek also said offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak "stood on the table" for running back Mike Washington Jr. on Day 3 of the draft, calling it a perfect scheme fit and praising his progression (@samwarren83, @theleviedwards).

Minnesota Vikings

• Kyle Van Noy is signing with the Vikings and starts on the practice squad to ramp up, rejoining Brian Flores (@TomPelissero). Alec Lewis calls it the fix for an edge group that lacked depth for months, with Tyler Batty's torn ACL adding urgency (@alec_lewis).
• Quarterback Max Brosmer is being re-signed to the practice squad after clearing waivers (@TomPelissero).

New England Patriots

• Receiver A.J. Brown worked at Tuesday's rainy practice, and starting safety Craig Woodson returned to on-field work for the first time in a couple of weeks (@MikeReiss).
• The Patriots named six captains: Kevin Byard III, Hunter Henry, Marcus Jones, Drake Maye, Morgan Moses and Robert Spillane (@MikeReiss, @Patriots).
• New England re-signed center Ben Brown and rookie linebacker Erick Hunter to the 53-man roster and added linebackers K.J. Britt and Jose Ramirez, defensive tackle Jalen Hunt and lineman Jake Kubas to the practice squad (@AdamSchefter).
• Reiss followed up on the Hunter sequence: the Patriots put in a claim, pulled it back after being awarded Darius Muasau and Cameron Latu, then circled back once a spot opened (@MikeReiss).

New Orleans Saints

• The Saints signed receiver Cedric Tillman and tight end Stone Smartt to the practice squad (@AdamSchefter).
• New Orleans claimed cornerback Decamerion Richardson off waivers from Las Vegas (@TomPelissero).
• Rookie safety Lorenzo Styles Jr. went to injured reserve. Nick Underhill rates him a promising special-teams player and notes Jayden Price is the other top gunner (@nick_underhill).

New York Giants

• The Malik Nabers workload story ran all afternoon. He was not on the field for the media-access portion (@Connor_J_Hughes, @JordanRaanan), then walked out in full uniform as reporters were leaving (@DDuggan21). John Harbaugh's account afterward: Nabers worked with trainers to start, got into team work, and was in for "most of the team reps," with the plan varying day to day (@Connor_J_Hughes, @JordanRaanan).
• Odell Beckham Jr. is back in his trademark No. 13 (@JordanRaanan), and hustled over to individual drills after a hug for Harbaugh during media access (@art_stapleton).
• Four additions to the practice squad: linemen Kingsley Eguakun and Darian Kinnard, receiver Charlie Jones and defensive back Elijah Jones (@JordanRaanan). Art Stapleton flags Charlie Jones as the interesting one — he was Cincinnati's primary punt and kick returner last season (@art_stapleton).

New York Jets

• The Jets signed offensive lineman Kohl Levao to the practice squad and released receiver Cam Camper (@nyjets). A quiet day on the beat otherwise, and the receiver release is the only skill-position move New York made.

Philadelphia Eagles

• PFF's cornerback leaderboard for lowest passer rating allowed last season puts Quinyon Mitchell second in the league at 54.4, behind only Jamel Dean (@PFF).
• Otherwise a quiet day on the beat, with the team account marking the season's approach (@Eagles).

Pittsburgh Steelers

• Cornerback Joey Porter Jr. returned to practice and was then noncommittal about playing Week 1 without a contract extension, saying only that he does not know and has to talk to "the guys upstairs" and his agents (@FarabaughFB, @bepryor). • Porter called the negotiation process tough but said he has the coaches and players on his side, and would say only that a deal getting done is up to management (@bepryor, @C_AdamskiTrib).
• Pittsburgh signed defensive back Carlin Vigers, linebacker Bradyn Swinson and receiver Brandon Johnson to the practice squad (@steelers).
• PFF has Porter third in the league in lowest passer rating allowed among cornerbacks last season at 55.9 (@PFF), which is the number underneath the contract conversation.

San Francisco 49ers

• Christian McCaffrey (tightness) was seen participating in Tuesday's practice (@UnderdogNFL).
• San Francisco made a series of roster moves, signing four players to the practice squad (@49ers).

Seattle Seahawks

• Cornerback Byron Murphy II on where he is in his development: "I know what I'm doing and I know you'll see the change," describing a player he is still trying to become (@Seahawks).
• Veteran tight end Nick Vannett, most recently with Seattle, signed to Baltimore's practice squad (@jeffzrebiec).

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

• Tampa Bay claimed defensive back Kevin Knowles off waivers from Kansas City (@TomPelissero). Greg Auman's note on the fit: Knowles played 231 special-teams snaps as a rookie with 10 tackles, and at 23 he helps on teams right away (@gregauman).
• The Bucs released tight end Devin Culp from the practice squad to make room for tight end C.J. Dippre (@gregauman).

Tennessee Titans

• Fernando Carmona Jr. was named the starting right guard (@jwyattsports).
• Receiver Xavier Restrepo is signing back to the practice squad. He made the initial 53 before being waived Monday when Tennessee made five roster additions, and he lands back in the same building as Cam Ward (@JustinM_NFL).
• Receiver Wan'Dale Robinson and linebacker Cedric Gray described how quickly Robert Saleh's impact was felt in Tennessee (@Schultz_Report). Saleh's own framing of the rebuild: the objective is how quickly you can get a young player to play like a veteran (@Titans).

Washington Commanders

• Washington signed cornerback Terrell Smith to the practice squad (@Commanders).

Camp Battles Tracker

Most of the NFL camp battles we have tracked all summer closed with final cuts. What is left is narrower and, in a couple of cases, more valuable — the splits inside a job rather than the job itself. Here is where each one stands and what it costs a fantasy roster.

The one to carry into Week 1: volume battles are settled, scoring battles are not. Atlanta's goal-line split and Detroit's post-Pacheco backfield are both worth more to a fantasy roster this week than any starting job still nominally open.

Atlanta Falcons Backfield Battle: How to Read the Reps

The most useful sentence written about any backfield Tuesday was not about a starter. The Athletic's Falcons writer watched Brian Robinson Jr. practice and concluded his physical style has cemented him as "the new Tyler Allgeier," with a direct line for fantasy managers: Bijan Robinson's managers may not like how many goal-line carries the veteran gets (@UnderdogNFL).

Read that carefully, because it is a claim about a role, not a depth chart. Nobody is suggesting Bijan Robinson loses touches. The question is narrower and it is the one that decides fantasy finishes at the position: who gets the ball inside the five.

Practice is where short-yardage roles get assigned, because it is the only place a coaching staff can rehearse them before the games count. A back who takes those reps in September usually takes them in October. That is why a reps observation carries more weight here than a coach's answer about the running back room would.

Our projections treat carries and goal-line carries as different inputs for exactly this reason, and this is the kind of note that moves the second one without touching the first. The honest limit: no Falcons coach has said any of this out loud, and one practice observation is one practice observation. What we will watch is Atlanta's first red-zone series of Week 1, which will answer it faster than another week of camp reports.
