Yesterday's Five Biggest Stories
1. Washington's Offensive Line Had Its Worst Day in Years, and the Beat Said So Out Loud
The Commanders spent Wednesday in Owings Mills for a single joint practice against the Ravens (@jeffzrebiec), and the verdict from the people who watch this team every day was blunt. Nicki Jhabvala called it the worst the Washington offense has looked in years and described the offensive line as inoperable (@NickiJhabvala, @UnderdogNFL). Earlier in the same session came the blunter version: the Commanders need a center, badly, still (@NickiJhabvala).
Ben Standig's summary matched it and added the caveat that matters — Washington's line gave up pressure on most plays, and both teams were missing starters up front (@BenStandig). John Keim reduced the fix to two sentences: they need Allegretti healthy and they need more depth (@john_keim). Washington had officially signed veteran tackle D.J. Humphries (@AdamSchefter), and Mitchell Tischler logged the moment Humphries took his first rep (@Mitch_Tischler).
It was not uniformly grim. On the very first offensive-line-versus-defensive-line one-on-one, Brandon Coleman stoned Trey Hendrickson and pushed him past the quarterback's back shoulder (@Mitch_Tischler), and the day ended with Jayden Daniels finding Antonio Williams for a touchdown in the closing red-zone period (@jeffzrebiec, @Mitch_Tischler). Jeff Zrebiec's own note on that throw is the honest one — a real doubt that Daniels gets it off in a game.
Daniels kept his own perspective afterward. He pointed out that it is August, that Washington's opener is September 13, and that his job is to do his job better and control what he can control (@JPFinlayNBCS).
For fantasy purposes this is the most consequential thing that happened Wednesday. Daniels is a first-two-rounds quarterback in most formats and Terry McLaurin's target quality rides on the same five bodies. A quarterback's rushing floor survives a leaky line; a passing offense's ceiling usually does not.
What we are watching: whether Washington's center job gets an answer this week. Jhabvala has now written the same sentence about that position on more than one day, and roster cuts are due Sunday — the last cheap chance to add an interior lineman.
2. The NFL Eliminated the Pro Bowl Games
The league has done away with the Pro Bowl Games entirely, per Adam Schefter, and will keep the selection itself as the honor (@AdamSchefter). ESPN's story on the decision confirms the same split: no event, still a Pro Bowl roster. Eighty-eight players will receive the honor this season with no alternates named (@UnderdogNFL, @UnderdogNFL).
The same day brought a second rules item with a much shorter fuse for actual football. The NFL and NFLPA agreed that a player who commits three violations in a season in any one of five categories — hip-drop tackles, horse-collar tackles, launching, hits on defenseless players and blindside blocks — will be suspended a game (@AdamSchefter, @AdamSchefter). Tom Pelissero's read is that the deal trades a lighter financial hit for single infractions against real punishment for repeat offenders (@TomPelissero).
The Pro Bowl decision is a calendar item. The discipline agreement is the one with fantasy consequences: it puts a one-game suspension on the table for repeat offenders in five categories that hard-hitting safeties and linebackers live in, which is real availability risk across an IDP season.
What we are watching: which names show up on the repeat-offender list early. Three flagged hits is not a high bar for a certain kind of safety.
3. Cam Skattebo Started a Fight, and His Own Defense Has Had Enough of Him
Pat Leonard's account is the fullest one. Skattebo slid down after a reception and came close to taking out the legs of a couple of Giants defensive backs in a period where the defense is not allowed to hit; Jevon Holland and Greg Newsome objected, and it escalated between Skattebo and Newsome (@PLeonardNYDN). Leonard's framing is not neutral: the post says Skattebo has had it coming, having run over linebacker Zaire Barnes earlier in the week under the same no-contact rules, and that his act is wearing on his defensive teammates.
Connor Hughes saw the same scuffle and used the same phrase about how long it had been building, noting Skattebo has been talking trash to the secondary most of the summer (@Connor_J_Hughes).
Two things are true at once here. Practice fights in the last week of August are close to a genre, and none of this shows up in a stat line. But the reason it belongs on this page rather than in a blooper reel is that Skattebo is a fantasy-relevant back whose standing inside his own building is now a running story — Hughes' framing was that this had been a long time coming — and how a young back is regarded internally is exactly the sort of thing that shows up as snap share in September. Our RB1 model verdict board has to price that kind of split rather than assume it away.
What we are watching: the rep counts, not the temperature. If Skattebo keeps the first-team work through this week, Wednesday was noise.
4. Calvin Austin III's Knee Injury Is a Torn ACL, and His Season Is Over
Tuesday's knee injury got its diagnosis. Adam Schefter confirmed Giants receiver Calvin Austin III tore an ACL in Tuesday's practice, ending his season — a contract year, with Austin in line for a real role in the receiver room (@AdamSchefter). Patricia Traina reported the same confirmation (@Patricia_Traina), and Art Stapleton wrote through what it does to the depth chart behind Malik Nabers (@art_stapleton).
The player most obviously in line for those snaps had his second straight strong afternoon. Jordan Raanan had Odell Beckham Jr. closing practice with a contested touchdown catch on a deep slant from Jameis Winston, after an earlier red-zone touchdown from Jaxson Dart (@JordanRaanan). Stapleton had the same day from the other end, including a 35-yard Dart throw that Beckham went up and got inside the 5 before crawling the last three yards untouched for the score (@art_stapleton).
For anyone holding a late-round Giants receiver, the WR3 job behind Malik Nabers is now genuinely open, and a 33-year-old is making the loudest case for it in the only place that counts right now.
What we are watching: whether Beckham's practice form survives contact with a game plan. Roster cuts land Sunday, and the Giants' receiver room is one of the few on this list that got thinner rather than deeper this week.
5. Green Bay Started Fast, Finished Badly, and Is Planning Its Backfield Both Ways
The Packers' joint practice with Arizona split cleanly in half. Jordan Love opened 8 of 10 in the first team period, including a 45-yard deep-ball touchdown to Matthew Golden between Budda Baker and Denzel Burke (@RobDemovsky, @RobDemovsky). Weston Hodkiewicz's note on the same throw ran five words: Matthew Golden is not human (@WesHod).
Then the two-minute drills arrived and Green Bay lost all four of them — both the starting and backup offenses failed to score while both Arizona units did (@mattschneidman). Rob Demovsky's camp report fills in how: Love threw two interceptions and took a sack on fourth down inside those situational periods (@RobDemovsky).
The roster news inside that same report is the part that moves drafts. Brian Gutekunst said Green Bay could carry a fourth running back on the initial 53 rather than the usual three, because Josh Jacobs' availability is not settled while a domestic violence investigation remains open; the Packers can also elevate from the practice squad if they need to. Gutekunst framed the depth as insurance, not a demotion, and the club has been preparing for the possibility of a suspension (@UnderdogNFL).
There was good news at tight end. Tucker Kraft did team drills in the joint practice, took real contact — including one hit flagged as late — and told Demovsky he wanted it to wake his nervous system up before Week 1; he is expected to be full-go for the opener (@ByRyanWood, @UnderdogNFL).
What we are watching: how Green Bay's initial 53 is shaped Sunday. A fourth running back on that list is the clearest public signal available about how the team is planning its Week 1 backfield.

Team-by-Team Camp Notes
Arizona Cardinals
- Arizona swept the situational work in its joint practice with Green Bay, winning all four two-minute periods with both the starting and backup offenses scoring touchdowns (@mattschneidman).
- Marvin Harrison Jr. caught a toe-tap touchdown in the back of the end zone (@UnderdogNFL); the Cardinals' account posted the clip (@AZCardinals).
- Theo Mackie's standout list from the Arizona side ran four deep: tight end Trey McBride, defensive tackle Walter Nolen, edge Jordan Burch and cornerback Max Melton (@theo_mackie).
Atlanta Falcons
- Michael Penix Jr. will not play in Friday night's preseason finale against Miami, per head coach Kevin Stefanski, with Penix saying three practices back is simply too soon (@AdamSchefter, @RapSheet). Ian Rapoport's read on the same session is that Penix has played himself into position to win the job anyway.
- The Friday quarterback order is Tua Tagovailoa, then Cooper Rush, then Jack Strand (@ByDanielFlick).
- Both quarterbacks started well Wednesday. Daniel Flick had Tagovailoa with the starters in seven-on-sevens and the twos in eleven-on-elevens, and Penix the reverse; both threw two touchdowns in the red-zone period (@ByDanielFlick).
- Offensive coordinator Tommy Rees walked through his evaluation of both quarterbacks in the team's Camp Chatter with Tori McElhaney, crediting Penix for staying sharp mentally through his limited work and Tagovailoa for owning the operation (@tori_mcelhaney).
Baltimore Ravens
- Lamar Jackson closed the seven-on-seven red-zone period with three straight touchdown throws — to Rashod Bateman, Mark Andrews and a leaping Ja'Kobi Lane — finishing 4-of-6 in the drill (@jamisonhensley). He also hit Devontez Walker for a 62-yard score off play-action, a jumping catch about 20 yards downfield and then nothing but grass (@ryanmink).
- It was not a clean day for the first-team offense either. Brian Wacker had Jackson missing an open Bateman on a sideline out and holding the ball too long (@brianwacker1), Jamison Hensley noted pass protection was an issue in full-team red zone (@jamisonhensley), and offensive line coach Dwayne Ledford was audibly working his group over (@brianwacker1).
- Baltimore's own center competition got going in earnest, with Ethan Pocic and Jovaughn Gwyn both taking first-team reps in the joint practice (@ryanmink) — a job that opened when Danny Pinter went on injured reserve (@RapSheet).
- Jackson said injuries were behind his lower rushing volume last season and, asked whether he will run more in 2026, said he will do whatever it takes to win (@jamisonhensley, ESPN).
Buffalo Bills
- Joe Buscaglia's annual bubble watch at The Athletic has 14 players competing for the final four or five roster spots, with Thursday night's finale against Pittsburgh at Highmark Stadium as the last audition before Sunday's cutdown (@JoeBuscaglia). The piece calls this year's bubble one of the more muddled puzzles general manager Brandon Beane has had to solve.
- Two of the specifics from that piece: Trent Sherfield has been a steady, trusted voice in the receiver room all summer, and there is a live competition between rookie Tommy Doman Jr. and Mitch Wishnowsky.
Carolina Panthers
- Carolina's joint practice in Houston went badly up front. Aaron Wilson had the Texans' defensive line dominating and sacking Bryce Young at least three times (@AaronWilson_NFL); Underdog's tally for Young's day was four sacks and two interceptions (@UnderdogNFL).
- With Xavier Legette sidelined, Ja'seem Reed got plenty of run with the first-team offense (@mike_e_kaye).
- The Panthers' own joint practice observations led with the same theme: Houston's defense caused problems all afternoon (@Panthers).
Chicago Bears
- The health news was the news. Dan Wiederer had Darnell Wright back on the field and looking OK, Luther Burden III back for individual work and Elijah Hicks taking some first-team reps in seven-on-seven, in a brief non-padded practice (@danwiederer).
- Courtney Cronin reported before the session that Wright was fine after leaving Tuesday early with what looked like an elbow injury (@CourtneyRCronin).
- Chicago flies to Tennessee for a joint practice with the Titans on Thursday (@CourtneyRCronin).
Cincinnati Bengals
- Ja'Marr Chase did not practice Wednesday after banging up his left knee the day before. Ben Baby's detail is the useful one: no protective equipment on the knee (@Ben_Baby).
- With Chase out, Dohnte Meyers took first-team reps and then stayed nearly 40 minutes after practice throwing with Joe Burrow. Jay Morrison's read, in his story at Bengals On SI, is that the session was the surest sign yet that the former DoorDash driver and CFL receiver is making the 53 (@ByJayMorrison, @ByJayMorrison). Meyers told Morrison the two do it often.
- Burrow will not be throwing to Meyers in Friday's game in Philadelphia, but Morrison's framing is that the opener is a different question.
Cleveland Browns
- Head coach Todd Monken said Cleveland's starters, quarterback Deshaun Watson included, will not play in Thursday night's preseason finale against New England (@AdamSchefter).
- Tony Grossi's day-19 notebook has Monken beginning to tailor the offense to Watson, plus a cornerback injured on the last day of camp (@TonyGrossi).
Dallas Cowboys
- Dallas closed camp Wednesday (@dallascowboys). Rookie receiver Camden Brown kept making plays through the final session, and Dak Prescott and George Pickens connected again (@jonmachota, @jonmachota).
- The line note to watch: Tyler Smith did not take reps in one-on-ones, and T.J. Bass worked with the first team at left guard (@toddarcher).
- Shavon Revel and Jaishawn Barham took turns with the first-team defense from the start of practice (@toddarcher), and Caleb Downs picked off his first pass of camp (@jonmachota).
- Rookie tight end Michael Trigg (toe) returned to practice (@jonmachota).
Denver Broncos
- Denver made a set of roster moves ahead of its third preseason game, signing defensive tackle Israel Antwine and tackle Foster Sarell while releasing safety Taylor Rapp and waiving receiver Kyre Duplessis (@RapSheet).
Detroit Lions
Quiet day in Lions camp — nothing notable to report.
Green Bay Packers
- The Packers lost all four two-minute periods to Arizona after Jordan Love opened the day 8 of 10 with a 45-yard touchdown to Matthew Golden (@mattschneidman, @RobDemovsky).
- Brian Gutekunst said Green Bay could keep a fourth running back on the initial 53 with Josh Jacobs' availability unresolved, and can elevate from the practice squad besides (@UnderdogNFL, @RobDemovsky).
- Tucker Kraft did team drills, absorbed contact and is expected to be full-go in Week 1 (@ByRyanWood, @UnderdogNFL).
- Rookie cornerback Brandon Cisse jumped a Jacoby Brissett throw against blitz pressure and returned the interception (@mikespofford, @mattschneidman).
- Away from the field, Matt Schneidman talked to a group of Packers who probably will not make the roster about how Love treats them, and the resulting story at The Athletic opens with undrafted rookie receiver J. Michael Sturdivant — a camp standout — being surprised that Love knew his first name (@mattschneidman).
Houston Texans
- C.J. Stroud was sharp against Carolina, hitting Nico Collins repeatedly, a red-zone touchdown to Jaylin Noel and a tight-spiral score to rookie tight end Marlin Klein (@AaronWilson_NFL, @jonmalexander). Jonathan Alexander charted a four-play drive that ended with a 25-yard touchdown to Lewis Bond (@jonmalexander).
- Danielle Hunter had three sacks and Calen Bullock intercepted Bryce Young (@jonmalexander).
- Right tackle Braden Smith went down and was carted off, halting practice; the Texans believe it is a foot injury (@AaronWilson_NFL, @AdamSchefter).
- Newly acquired receiver Kayshon Boutte was on hand for the joint practice (@jonmalexander), and DeMeco Ryans said no starters will play Friday against Carolina (@AaronWilson_NFL).
Indianapolis Colts
- The linebacker plan has changed shape. Joel Erickson reports the Colts intended CJ Allen in the middle with a competition for the other spot, until a pair of Allen injuries opened both spots to rotation (@JoelAErickson).
- Kevin Bowen's notebook covers a back injury the Colts plan to manage and which receiver still needs to improve (@KBowen1070).
Jacksonville Jaguars
- Trevor Lawrence had the better of the final joint practice with Tampa Bay, going 6-of-8 in red-zone work with a touchdown and an interception — including what John Shipley called a terrific corner-of-the-end-zone throw to Parker Washington — and 7-of-9 in seven-on-sevens, per his practice report (@_John_Shipley).
- Brian Thomas Jr., who hurt a shoulder Tuesday, was back for individual drills in a red non-contact jersey — Shipley's read is that Week 1 is not in question.
- Cornerback Jabbar Muhammad had two pass breakups and an interception, rookie Josh Cameron caught a deep sideline touchdown, and Emmanuel Pregnon stayed with the first team at left guard.
Kansas City Chiefs
- Kansas City acquired offensive lineman Joshua Ezeudu from the Giants for a 2028 seventh-round pick (@Giants).
- Patrick Mahomes, who is not expected to play in the preseason finale, is feeling great and on track to start Week 1 (@JFowlerESPN).
Las Vegas Raiders
Quiet day in Raiders camp — nothing notable to report.
Los Angeles Chargers
- Daniel Popper's update on the Chargers' backfield leaves no room for a committee reading — "Omarion Hampton is the guy," with a warning against overthinking it (@UnderdogNFL). That is the kind of beat-writer sentence that settles a draft-day debate faster than a depth chart does.
Los Angeles Rams
Quiet day in Rams camp — nothing notable to report.
Miami Dolphins
- Miami is signing running back Coleman Bennett to a one-year deal; he spent this preseason with the Bears and grew up in South Florida (@AdamSchefter).
- Friday's finale brings Tua Tagovailoa back to Miami as Atlanta's starter. Joe Schad wrote a column arguing Dolphins fans have no reason to boo him (@schadjoe), while edge rusher Chop Robinson said he hopes to get a chance to hit a quarterback he never could in practice (@DavidFurones_).
- Receiver Chris Bell drew a downfield target against tight coverage from AJ Green, got tangled up and landed hard, then jogged back to the huddle — in only his second practice (@Marcel_LJ).
Minnesota Vikings
- J.J. McCarthy (ankle) did not practice, but the Vikings still hope he starts Friday night against Denver (@WillRagatz). Kevin O'Connell's phrasing, in ESPN's camp notes, was that starting him is the goal but they cannot force it (@SeifertESPN).
- Carson Wentz and Max Brosmer are both scheduled to play Friday as O'Connell tries to get a full look at the room, and he said conversations about Harrison Smith's future are ongoing.
New England Patriots
- New England's preseason finale Thursday night comes against a Browns team that will not play its starters, Deshaun Watson included (@AdamSchefter). For a Patriots roster with spots still open, that turns the finale into a longer look at their own bubble.
New Orleans Saints
- Tyler Shough is on a genuine run. Nick Underhill's numbers: since Day 12 of camp, Shough has completed 76.5% of 115 attempts and gone 6-of-10 on throws of 20-plus yards, joint practices included (@nick_underhill). Shough added a seven-on-seven touchdown to Devaughn Vele on Wednesday (@nick_underhill).
- Chris Olave was back and productive after leaving Tuesday's practice early from a hard fall, per Ross Jackson's three takeaways from the final open practice at Yulman Stadium (@RossJacksonNOLA).
- Kellen Moore said a lot of the starters will not play against Dallas, pointing to 145 joint-practice snaps with the first units as evidence enough (@nick_underhill). The kicker competition is still tight: Tanner Brown went 8-for-8, Charlie Smyth and Daniel Carlson 7-for-8, with a decision due after Friday's pregame.
New York Giants
- Malik Nabers walked off with a trainer with 20 minutes left in practice after handling a full workload; John Harbaugh said afterward he had no update indicating the early exit was injury-related (@DDuggan21).
- Calvin Austin III's knee injury was confirmed as a season-ending torn ACL (@AdamSchefter).
- Odell Beckham Jr. had his second straight strong practice, closing with a contested touchdown on a deep slant from Jameis Winston (@JordanRaanan), and Jaxson Dart hit several big throws in live team periods (@art_stapleton).
- Harbaugh would not say whether the starters will play Friday against the Jets, noting it would otherwise be nearly a month between game reps for Dart and the first-team offense (@JordanRaanan).
- Assistant general manager Brandon Brown's explanation for injured players returning faster this summer was one word: meritocracy (@JordanRaanan).
New York Jets
Quiet day in Jets camp — nothing notable to report.
Philadelphia Eagles
- Jimmy Kempski's updated training camp battle tracker calls the Eagles' top three receiver spots settled (@JimmyKempski, @JimmyKempski).
- Kempski's rookie review, summarized by Underdog, has Makai Lemon expected to work as the WR3 — mostly short catches near the line of scrimmage, and the rookie most often moved pre-snap — while tight end Eli Stowers is not ready and is likely a gameday inactive (@UnderdogNFL).
- Safety Marcus Epps, cut by New England a year ago while coming off an ACL injury, is in line for a big role in Philadelphia's defense (@Jeff_Neiburg).
- Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie will be inducted into the Eagles Hall of Fame, honored at halftime on Monday, October 26 (@Eagles).
Pittsburgh Steelers
- Ray Fittipaldo's preview of the finale frames Thursday night at Buffalo as final auditions: several Steelers have starting jobs, not just roster spots, still on the line (@rayfitt1).
San Francisco 49ers
- Mike Evans plans to play in Week 1 despite a camp full of minor issues; his latest, a groin problem, is considered minor barring a change, per a source (@JFowlerESPN).
Seattle Seahawks
- NFL owners approved the record $9.6 billion sale of the Seahawks to the Khosla family (@AdamSchefter), and Bob Condotta posted the first look at the new ownership group (@bcondotta).
- The football news is worse. Brady Henderson's notebook leads with Jake Bobo tearing an ACL in last Friday's joint practice against Tennessee, ending his season, and Tory Horton missing nearly two weeks with an issue unrelated to last year's leg fracture (@BradyHenderson). Mike Macdonald said Horton is still working through it and will be out for a period of time.
- That leaves the depth behind Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Cooper Kupp and Rashid Shaheed thin heading into the season — the No. 4 receiver job in Seattle is now a genuine question rather than a formality.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- First-round pick Reuben Bain Jr. suffered an AC sprain that sources described as nothing serious; he is expected to be ready for Week 1 at Cincinnati (@AdamSchefter).
- The Buccaneers wrapped their joint practice work with Jacksonville, where Trevor Lawrence had the better of the day (@_John_Shipley).
Tennessee Titans
- Tennessee is Chicago's joint-practice partner Thursday, with the Bears flying in after a light Wednesday session (@CourtneyRCronin).
Washington Commanders
- The joint practice in Owings Mills was, by the beat's account, Washington's worst offensive day in years, with an offensive line Nicki Jhabvala called inoperable and pressure allowed on most snaps (@NickiJhabvala, @BenStandig). Both teams were missing starters up front.
- The center job remains the sore spot (@NickiJhabvala), and John Keim's fix list starts with getting Allegretti healthy and adding depth (@john_keim).
- Washington officially signed veteran tackle D.J. Humphries (@AdamSchefter), whose first rep of the joint practice Mitchell Tischler logged (@Mitch_Tischler).
- The defense at least finished it. Mike Sainristil intercepted Lamar Jackson in the end zone to end practice (@jeffzrebiec), and Jayden Daniels answered with a touchdown to Antonio Williams on the final snap (@Mitch_Tischler). Standig's read of that same session, though, was that Washington's defense did not generate much pressure around Jackson either (@BenStandig).
- Daniels' own take: it is August, the opener is September 13, and his job is to be better and control what he can (@JPFinlayNBCS).

Atlanta Falcons Quarterback Battle: How to Read the Reps
Atlanta is the last unresolved starting quarterback job that carries real fantasy weight, and Wednesday moved it without settling it.
Start with the reps, because they are the only evidence with a number attached. Daniel Flick charted the split precisely: Tua Tagovailoa worked with the starters in seven-on-sevens and the twos in eleven-on-elevens, and Michael Penix Jr. did the reverse — twos in seven-on-sevens, ones in eleven-on-elevens. Both threw two touchdowns in the red-zone period, and the session closed with two-minute work (@ByDanielFlick).
| Quarterback | Seven-on-seven | Eleven-on-eleven |
|---|---|---|
| Tua Tagovailoa | With the starters | With the twos |
| Michael Penix Jr. | With the twos | With the ones |
A staff that had decided would not build that. Splitting a quarterback across both units on the same afternoon is what a team does when it is still collecting evidence, and offensive coordinator Tommy Rees said as much in the Falcons' own Camp Chatter with Tori McElhaney — the staff was, in Rees's word, strategic about balancing the work so it got a full body of evaluation on both despite Penix's limits coming off knee rehab (@tori_mcelhaney). Rees credited Penix for maximizing mental reps while he could not take physical ones, and credited Tagovailoa for taking ownership of the operation, adding that when things are clean around him Tagovailoa is as accurate as they get.
Then read Friday's assignment sheet, which points the other way from how it looks. Penix will not play in the preseason finale against Miami — he told reporters that three practices back is too soon — while Tagovailoa starts, followed by Cooper Rush and Jack Strand (@AdamSchefter, @ByDanielFlick). Ian Rapoport reported both the decision and the conclusion drawn from it: Penix has put himself in position to win the job with his play (@RapSheet). Sitting the quarterback you are protecting and starting the one who still needs snaps is a normal shape for the last preseason game.
The counterweight is Tagovailoa's own preseason production, and Underdog's summary of Rapoport's reporting puts it harder than Rapoport's own post does: that Tagovailoa's play had made it "impossible" to name him the starter. Attached to that summary was Underdog's own tally of quarterbacks with more completions beyond the line of scrimmage than Tagovailoa this preseason, a list running more than 20 names deep (@UnderdogNFL). Those numbers are Underdog's, not Atlanta's evaluation, and preseason samples are small enough to argue with. They are still a measurable version of what the eye test has been saying about how far the ball is traveling.
Why this matters more than a backup-quarterback question: Drake London and Bijan Robinson are being drafted as top-15 overall assets, and the difference between a downfield passer and a checkdown offense is worth a full tier of receiving value to both. Our projections have to carry both branches until Atlanta names a Week 1 starter.
The thing to keep straight is what Friday can and cannot prove. Tagovailoa will be playing against Miami's defense with Atlanta's supporting cast around him, and Penix will be standing on the sideline in a baseball cap. A good night from one quarterback and no night at all from the other is not a head-to-head result — the decision was made on the practice field, over four weeks, and it will be announced when Atlanta is ready to announce it.
Injury Watch
- Calvin Austin III, WR, Giants (knee): Confirmed torn ACL suffered in Tuesday's practice; his season is over (@AdamSchefter, @Patricia_Traina).
- Malik Nabers, WR, Giants: Walked off with a trainer with 20 minutes left after a full workload; John Harbaugh said he had no update suggesting it was injury-related (@DDuggan21).
- Ja'Marr Chase, WR, Bengals (left knee): Did not practice Wednesday, one day after banging it up, and wore no protective equipment on the knee (@Ben_Baby).
- Jake Bobo, WR, Seahawks (knee): Tore an ACL in last Friday's joint practice against Tennessee and is out for the season (@BradyHenderson).
- Tory Horton, WR, Seahawks: Has missed nearly two weeks with an issue unrelated to last season's leg fracture; Mike Macdonald says he will be out for a period of time (@BradyHenderson).
