1. Josh Jacobs' Court Date Jumped From November to Three Days Before the Opener

Green Bay running back Josh Jacobs, who was charged with battery and criminal destruction of property, will now make his initial court appearance on misdemeanor charges on Sept. 10 at 11 a.m. at the Brown County courthouse, more than two months earlier than the November 17 date originally on the calendar (@AdamSchefter, @AdamSchefter).

Rob Demovsky reported the new date from Wisconsin court records, crediting Michael Gross (@RobDemovsky). Nothing in Friday's reporting speaks to Jacobs' availability, and no league or team action has been reported. What changed is the calendar: a matter that was going to sit unresolved into the middle of the season now has a hearing three days before Week 1, which is the sort of date fantasy managers drafting this weekend want on their own calendar.

What actually moves a lineup today: three items on this board carry into Week 1 — the Sept. 10 hearing in Green Bay, Atlanta's unnamed starting quarterback, and the 20-plus-carry question in New York. Everything else on Friday was paperwork.

2. Sam McDowell Charted Patrick Mahomes' 274 Days Since Knee Surgery

The Kansas City Star's Sam McDowell published a free-to-read deep dive on the 274 days since Patrick Mahomes' knee surgery, framed around Mahomes returning to Kansas City wanting to walk before his 11-month-old daughter, Golden, in a piece McDowell bills as a "remarkable thing to watch" (@SamMcDowell11).

The reporting covers the recovery itself. No snap count and no Week 1 designation came with it. It is the most substantive Chiefs item on the board, and it is worth the click for anyone deciding how much draft capital a Kansas City passing game is worth.

3. The Bears Cleared About $17 Million by Restructuring Three Contracts

Chicago restructured the deals of guard Joe Thuney, defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo and linebacker T.J. Edwards, creating roughly $17 million in 2026 cap space (@FieldYates, @UnderdogNFL).

Restructures this late are usually about clearing room for something, not about the players involved. Jacob Infante's read is that the Bears were in the red before the moves and that converting Odeyingbo's money makes him harder to cut next offseason, which is the price of doing it this way (@jacobinfante24). 4. The Pro Football Hall of Fame Overhauled How Players Get In

The Hall of Fame made sweeping changes to its selection process ahead of the 2027 election, including a large reduction in the number of selectors and the elimination of the separate Seniors category (@AdamSchefter, ESPN). Jeff Legwold reported the details for ESPN (@AdamSchefter, @RapSheet).

The context Adam Schefter attached: this comes a year after Bill Belichick was denied entry in his first year of eligibility. Not everyone is convinced. 5. Cam Skattebo Says He Was Asked About 20-Plus Carries a Game

Giants running back Cam Skattebo said John Harbaugh asked him whether he was ready for 20-plus carries a game, and that being asked the question at all told him where he stands (@UnderdogNFL, relayed from the @micnuggetsnfl interview).

Take it for what it is — a player relaying a conversation, not a team announcing a workload. But 20-plus carries a game is the line between a flex play and a weekly starter, and it is not a number that gets floated at a back who is expected to split the room. Arizona Cardinals

• Still the story in Arizona: Michael Wilson's extension, which led Good Morning Football's Friday roundup (@RapSheet).

Atlanta Falcons

• Atlanta is the only team in the league that has not named a starting quarterback, Ian Rapoport reported on NFL Network's The Insiders (@RapSheet). Rapoport added that Tua Tagovailoa would be on a "short leash" if he is the one named, based in part on the health of Michael Penix Jr. (@UnderdogNFL).
• Kevin Knight made the local case for starting Penix once he is ready (@FalcoholicKevin), and the beat has started treating the silence itself as the story (@marcraimondi).
• The Falcons signed EDGE Bralen Trice to the practice squad; the former third-round pick has spent his first two seasons working back from injuries (@willmcfadden).

Buffalo Bills

That is a three-way split with one clear lead, which makes Harvey the reception-dependent piece and Coleman the handcuff.

Detroit Lions

Camp Battles Tracker

The NFL camp battles we tracked all summer are closed and the depth charts are published, so what is left is not really a competition anymore — it is one unresolved starting job, a set of splits inside rooms that already have a lead name, and the roster churn that follows a cutdown. Here is where each stands going into game week, and what we are watching in each.

The one to carry into Week 1: Atlanta's quarterback job. Every other unsettled spot on this board is a backup or a rotation; Atlanta's is a starter, and it is the only one where the answer changes how an entire offense gets projected.

Atlanta Falcons Quarterback Battle: How to Read the Reps

Eight days from the openers, Atlanta is the only team in the NFL that has not said who is starting at quarterback (@RapSheet). That is the whole battle now — every other job that mattered to fantasy rosters closed at cutdowns.

The most useful piece of Friday's reporting was not the silence, it was the condition attached to it. Ian Rapoport reported that Tua Tagovailoa would be on a "short leash" if he is named, and that the leash is tied in part to Michael Penix Jr.'s health (@UnderdogNFL). Read that literally: it describes a starter whose job is contingent on someone else's recovery, which is a different thing from a starter who won the job.

For fantasy purposes that lands in a specific place. A quarterback on a stated short leash is not a quarterback anyone should be starting in a one-quarterback league, and the backup behind him is not rosterable either while his health is the open question. The pass-catchers are the part that survives the uncertainty — target volume in Atlanta does not disappear because the name under center is undecided, it just gets harder to price week to week. That is exactly the kind of spread our projections are built to carry: the same receiving room, two different quarterbacks, and a range instead of a single number.

The honest limit: nobody outside the building has seen a first-team rep count. Kevin Knight, who covers the team, is arguing the job should go to Penix once he is ready (@FalcoholicKevin), and the beat has begun writing about the delay itself (@marcraimondi). Until Atlanta says a name, everything else is inference.

What settles it is an announcement, and it has to come this week — a starting quarterback cannot stay unnamed through a game week without the practice plan giving it away.
