How To Claim Your California Fantasy Sports & Sportsbook Bonus

See below for details on how to claim your California fantasy sports and/or sports betting bonus.

California Fantasy Sports & Sports Betting Overview

With its other successes in previously prohibited industries, California has aspirations to be America’s “sports betting capital” if local governments get on board. Currently, anyone in search of how to bet in California will be frozen out. But California voters may have the chance to vote to join the other states with legal sports bets in their November 2020 elections. Let's get into the top-five things you need to know for California sports betting and CA online sports betting apps.

1) Is California Sports Betting Legal?

In January 2020, 18 Native American tribes received California state approval to petition for a state vote that would allow sports bets at Native American casinos and horse race tracks. The move is seen as a key first step to bring California sports betting to light, a potential $2.5 billion industry for the state according to the Los Angeles Times. Although the Coronavirus pandemic has sidetracked their petition’s progress in time for its initial April 21 deadline, they are hopeful that the governor or state legislature will offer an extension to receive the nearly 1 million signatures needed to get the vote on a ballot.

2) What Bills are Currently Before the State Legislature?

California sports betting hopefuls have at least a glimmer of something to see here, as constitutional amendment bills ACA 16 and SCA 6 are to put the issue in front of voters in November.

The new language of the bills allows sports betting in California, but only at the state’s tribal casinos and racetracks. California’s poker rooms, however, would have the option of offering sports betting, but the bill does state that they can continue to offer designated player games, which have faced tribal challenges.

Some key details from the bills:

  • Sets a tax rate of 10% on gross revenue for onsite wagering, 15% for mobile or online betting.
  • Establishes a $5 million initial licensing fee and $1 million annual fee for online betting platforms.
  • Sports betting at one satellite wagering facility at the four licensed horse racing tracks.
  • Each tribe, racetrack and satellite facility authorized to offer sports wagering can do so through one internet website

3) What are the Next Steps for CA Sports Betting?

Despite the progress made by local Native American tribes, it seems unlikely that California sports betting online will be available if a bill is brought to voters. Initial studies conducted by tribal leadership found that only around 30% of people polled supported CA sports betting on sports betting apps. In the future – and perhaps aided by our recent rise in telecommuting workers – it seems likely California will revisit this stance to give an opportunity to providers like FanDuel Sportsbook and DK Sportsbook to provide online sports betting in California.

For now, any bets placed will have to be between friends or “friends.” In the future, Native American casinos like Pechanga and San Manuel Casino will likely be among the first to allow people to bet in Los Angeles and other neighboring Southern California areas. Up north, established Native American casinos like Chukchansi Casino and San Pablo Lytton Casino should be ready shortly after state approval to allow people to bet in San Francisco and the other prominent Northern California regions. After months of self-quarantine, social distancing, and isolation, going to a casino to place a bet in California will seem like a real treat.

4) What are the Most Popular Teams to Bet on in CA?

More professional sports teams (15) call California home than any other state in the country. Cali still has three NFL teams -- the San Francisco 49ers, LA Chargers and LA Rams -- even after losing the Oakland Raiders to Las Vegas. Many Californians will ride or die with the Raiders no matter what city they're in, though.

The NBA scene is glowing in CA. After the Warriors' epic run championship runs in the last five years, and now the Clippers and Lakers looking like the premier teams -- or at least the betting favorites -- in the Western Conference in 2020. ... And then there are the Kings.

With five MLB teams in the state, there's plenty of betting action to go around throughout the summer in Cali. The Dodgers seem to get the most pub and buzz, being in LA, but there is also the Angels, Padres, Giants and A's to bet on.

California has a trio of NHL teams in the Kings, the Ducks and the Sharks. Despite never winning a Stanley Cup with Wayne Gretzky, the Kings did win two titles in three seasons from 2011-2014. The Ducks won in 2006-07, but the Sharks have never had a chance to lift the cup.

5) Is There Anything Else to Know About CA Sports Betting?

Although there’s a lot of work left for residents to find a way how to bet in California, things seem to be on track for progress in the coming months. With billions of potential dollars on the line, there should be ways to bet on sports in California sooner than later with California online betting hopefully not too far behind.

What are the Most Common Types of Bets I Can Make in California?

Straight bet

This is the most common bet type and it is just a straight up single bet on a game. A point spread is determined by the oddsmakers with one team being favored by a certain amount of points. Let’s take a look at an example line below to give a clear indication of what a straight bet would be:

Boston Celtics -6.5 (-110), moneyline -320

at Cleveland Cavaliers +6.5 (-110), moneyline +260

O/U 206

The Celtics are favored by 6.5 points in this example. This means that if you bet the Cavaliers, you are getting 6.5 points, so if the Cavaliers win the game, or lose by fewer than seven points, you will win the bet because of your 6.5-point cushion. On the other side, when you are laying 6.5 points as the favorite, you would need the Celtics to win by seven or more to win the bet.

Final Score: Celtics 102 Cavaliers 98. Cavaliers would cover even though the Celtics won the game because the +6.5 point spread is enough to cover a four-point defeat.

Moneyline Bet

The moneyline is a bet where there is no spread; you are just picking the winner of the game. In the example above, the Cavaliers ML is +260, which means that for every $100 wagered, you win $260 if the Cavaliers win the game outright. They receive the plus side of the moneyline since they are the underdog and picking them rewards you with nice odds since they are projected to likely lose the game. On the flip side, if you bet the Celtics ML at -320, you have to bet $320 to win $100. They are the favorites so if you decide to bet the moneyline instead of the point spread, you are forced to bet additional money to win $100.

In the example above, the Celtics ML would be the winner as they won the game outright. The spread is irrelevant for a moneyline wager.

Over/Under

This is a straight bet wagering on how many total combined points will be scored in a game by both teams. For example, an NBA game may have an over/under of 210 points, which means that the oddsmakers are projecting a combined points total of 210 between the two teams. If you think the teams are going to score more than 210 points total, you bet the over, and conversely, if you think it’s going to be a defensive struggle, you can bet the under hoping that the total points scored equals 209 points or less.

Parlay

A parlay is a bet where you combine multiple bets into one bet and you get increased odds because you only win your parlay wager if all of your bets win. If you do a three-team parlay, you select three different teams from three different games and if you win all three of the bets you hit your parlay for longshot odds (6-1 so $100 to win $600). Going 0/3, 1/3, or 2/3 is all the same and you lose the parlay bet. It’s all or nothing which makes them tough to hit and is more of a home run type bet than a regular straight bet since there’s a chance for a big payoff.
