Unless your league features an exotic format (e.g. superflex), only 10-12 quarterbacks start in your league each week. There are at most a handful of starting NFL quarterbacks that are unplayable in fantasy. The remaining 20+ QBs can all be streamed/spot-started in a pinch, especially in a good matchup. The plethora of playable quarterbacks means there is no need to draft second or third quarterbacks, which in turn leads to greater abundance on the waiver wire. You could likely get by with playing a different quarterback each week that you pick up from the waiver wire (although we wouldn’t go so far as to recommend this strategy), but attempting the same strategy with running backs or wide receivers would be disastrous.
Our consensus rankings for 2021 do not have a single quarterback in either of the first two rounds. In fact, we would hesitate to pull the trigger on a quarterback at any point before Round 5. Given the abundance of draftable quarterbacks someone will likely drop. For the QB position, it pays to wait and snap up great values.
