Week 5 Start ‘Em Sit ‘Em Wide Receivers: Deebo Samuel & Odell Beckham Jr.

Looking towards Week 5 of the NFL fantasy football season, we will examine all of the matchups and discern the positive or negative impact that a given matchup will have on the wide receivers. Below is the best fantasy football start ’em sit ’em options for Week 5 NFL matchups.

Week 5 Fantasy Football Start ‘Em Sit ‘Em: Wide Receivers

Must-Start: Deebo Samuel — San Francisco 49ers at Arizona Cardinals

Even with the change at quarterback from Jimmy Garoppolo to Trey Lance, Samuel is still the clear lead receiver on the 49ers. Last week he caught eight of 13 targets for 156 yards and two touchdowns. The Cardinals defense looked stout last week against a strong Rams offense, but much of that derived from Sean McVay kicking field goals instead of going for touchdowns. If Lance looks how he did last week, Samuel could easily be a top-five wide receiver on the week (he is currently WR3 on the season).

Must-Start: Jakobi Meyers — New England Patriots at Houston Texans

Going against the Texans defense is one of the simplest matchups for a wide receiver. Meyers appears to be the No. 1 target on the Patriots. Last week against the Buccaneers he had eight receptions on 12 targets for 70 yards. While he has yet to find the end zone this season, Meyers’ target volume is reliable, especially this week against a bad defense that just allowed 40 to the Bills.

Must-Start: Robert Woods — Los Angeles Rams at Seattle Seahawks

This week Sean McVay talked about getting Woods more involved in the offense. He took all accountability as to why Woods has not been seeing enough opportunities. Last week against the Cardinals he had four receptions on six targets for 48 yards and a touchdown. The hope is that he will have a much higher target share on par with Cooper Kupp. If there was ever a matchup for him to do so, it is this game with a 54.5 Vegas total.

Must-Sit: JuJu Smith-Schuster — Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Denver Broncos

The Steelers offense has been a complete disaster this year. Last week against the Packers Smith-Schuster had two receptions on eight targets for 11 yards. This week he faces a strong Broncos defense, and if Chase Claypool plays, it is likely that Smith-Schuster will be the third option.

Must-Sit: Odell Beckham Jr. — Cleveland Browns at Los Angeles Chargers

It has been reported that Baker Mayfield suffered a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder when he went out against the Texans in Week 2. Even though it is his non-throwing shoulder, he still has been sluggish since the injury. It appears that surgery is not the answer as of right now, but either way, this has a severe impact on the Browns offense. Last week everyone was all over a huge Beckham game against the Vikings, and he had just two receptions on seven targets for 27 yards. Mayfield’s injury clearly affected his accuracy, and Beckham suffered as a result. Until Mayfield is healthier, fading Beckham is the right decision.

Must-Sit: Robby Anderson — Carolina Panthers vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Despite a history with Sam Darnold, it appears to have not transitioned to the Panthers. Even with Anderson seeing 11 targets on Sunday against the Cowboys, he only had five receptions for 46 yards. D.J. Moore is playing well across the board this season, so it is hard to imagine a complete role for Anderson, especially with the likelihood of Christian McCaffrey returning.
